 This great site is open to all as part of the 'Forest Camping' 50/50 JV with the C&CC and Forestry Commission. I've been coming here with friends since the mid 1990s, and have seen a few changes that's for sure. Here are a few +ve's and -ve's
+ve Staff are friendly, still live on site.
-ve The warden who we used to get on with very well doesn't seem to be there any more.
-ve The old tarmac path through to the public BBQ area has been covered over with brush and soil. I believe this was because it was leading people out to the PUBLIC toilets, and at one time, the SITE toilets were closed and boarded up, and not reopened until the 50/50 JV era. This is a shame as the 'new' access is across muddy, uneven ground, and not nice to use.
-ve The public BBQs have all now been taken up anyway. True, most were heavily vandalised (despite being narrowboat grade steel) but were a handy feature, one less thing to pack and take home 'hot'. A real end of an era.
-ve Still no showers and looking like there never will be - the old shower block IS still there but locked up and either empty or staff only.
-ve As another states, the path to Marlborough is in a real bad state now, thanks to all the rain. It won't recover, it will need work doing to it.
-ve Never thought I would see an industrial estate and big Tesco within a stones throw of the Forest :(( Shame on the planners.
-ve Even the forestry commission themselves don't seem to exist here now, all work done by contractors but.
+ve All the trees felled around 2007 made a huge mess and things looked wrecked. 7 years on and nature has sorted itself out, all logs removed, no big scars in the ground and chippings all mulches away. Looks good again.
Overall, still a great site, the BBQ and Picnic areas (public, not strictly part of the campsite but next to it) are still there and quiet in the evenings as the public car park closes quite early. Great for us campers who can just walk over.

This campsite has good reviews but I am not sure if I am about to ruin that. To be fair my trip was in May after a particularly wet winter and it was instantly apparent that this is not a very free draining site.
My first impressions though were good. Site staff were living right next to the entrance gate. It was a little tiresome having to get out and open the gate then drive through and get out again to close it and an automatic barrier would be much better. Nevertheless security was excellent.
I was met by a very friendly female in reception who booked me in quickly and cheerfully and then took me outside and with true airline hostess ability and waving of arms stated, 'Ehu pitches over there, non-ehu over there, over there is the footpath to Marlborough, over there are the toilets, and over there is the footpath to the forest, pitch wherever you like'. So off I went little the wiser to find an EHU pitch. Being mid-week it was not exceptionally busy but it seemed to me that most of the usable areas were occupied. The only remaining areas within reach of an EHU pillar, it seemed to me, were either rutted from previous wheeled vehicles unsuccessful attempts to manoeuvre on waterlogged grass or had deep puddles and mud. This was clearly a campsite that was more geared up to wheeled units rather than tents with sewn in groundsheets. However, a complaint to staff finally produce a usable area with a little grass although the member of staff did have to move somebody else's hook up lead to a different pillar in order for me to use the one in that area. It is all very well having a 'pitch where you like' policy but on EHU pitches most units have to be within 20 metres of the supply pillar. They face in all different directions creating a spaghetti of EHU leads running along the ground. This can lead to difficulties in actually finding a space that doesn't encroach on somebody else's privacy or view, and not right on top of somebody's EHU lead.
The washrooms were clean and adequate but as previously stated, no showers. There was only one block for the whole site and in the gents that was 4 sinks and 4 toilets. The toilet cubicles were so small that one almost had to reverse in. There was hot water but it flowed extremely slowly and took ages to fill a sink deep enough to wash with. Push taps which seemed to go against the sites water saving policy since they took ages to stop flowing.
The footpath to Tesco was quite steep in places, narrow and rutted and although fairly dry on this occasion would clearly be dangerous, wet and slippery in wet weather. I wouldn't think anyone with mobility problems or heart or lung problems would be able to use it. As previous reviews it does actually take 10 minutes down this path to Tesco and a further 10 minutes along a pavement to the centre of town. It would be too dangerous to walk on the main road. In effect therefore, anyone who cannot manage the footpath would need to drive into town.
The nearest pub, the Lamb Inn, is in the town, in The Parade. I found this a very welcoming place.
In summary then, I am sure this would be a very nice site when fully dried out but pitches when I went were rather rough. The site seems to be more geared up to wheeled units rather than tents, certainly in the EHU area. The road into town is too dangerous and the footpath leading down the hill from the back of the site is a little dodgy underfoot even for the fit and healthy. Perhaps this could better be described as a 'chill out' site. Somewhere just to sit in peace and quiet were it not for the noisy road alongside. I was not too impressed.

Lovely, quite basic site, with a very relaxed feel. No marked pitches. No problems with the EHU. No toilet facilities open while we were there.
The staff are fabulous, and were lovely with our children, who were desperate to play with the rabbits, who have a hutch near reception. Very helpful and friendly. Which adds to that relaxed feel.
A great site for a weekend. Didn't need the car while we were there. Walked into Marlborough, and 'mooched' around for a few hours on Saturday, and then a walk in the neighbouring forest on Sunday morning, and then home. A lovely relaxing weekend.
Will definitely go back.

The weather changed and I couldn't resist taking the motor home out, and as Postern Hill isn't too far from home, and the wife was away me and the dog decided to go away for a night.
And I'm glad I did, what a great spot! It is actually in, Savernake Forest we could walk for ever if we wanted to.
The wardens are really friendly and helpful, of you fancy a walk into Marlborough there is a track (muddy though) wouldn't try the road bit dodgy.
Now the downside, there are no toilets or showers at this time of year, and the site is very soft(I needed a tow)but no problem the warden got the tractor and off I went.
Will I go again definitely!

What a lovely little site! Just went for 3 nights and didn't want to leave :) V efficient booking in, we were able to choose our pitch (under some beautiful oak trees. Interesting mix of people too, which is always a bonus. Discreet but very effective staffing/security - well done to all the Yogi Bears!
Thank you again to the nice man who gifted us wine - not a bad trade for a bubble sword! Will definitely be returning here.

This was our 5th visit to Postern Hill. As ever, the site was clean and well-maintained, with friendly and helpful staff.
As other reviewers have mentioned, there are no showers at postern hill, so pack plenty of baby wipes! The toilets are always clean, but there never seems to be any hot water in the wash basins. Oddly however, the hot water in the washing up area behind the toilets always has plenty of piping hot water.
There is plenty for the kids to do in the forest, and Marlborough is a 5 minute drive down the hill. There is also a medium-sized tesco 10 minutes walk (down hill) from the site. The stone circle of Avebury is only 6 miles away and is well worth a visit. We would recommend the Wagon and horses pub for lovely food!
The only slight gripe is that you will need to factor in the cost of new tent pegs every time you visit. The first 2cm of ground is nice and soft followed by what seems to be gravel and concrete! For this trip I invested in some Outwell Halfround U-Pegs at £4. 95 per pack (I had 2 packs). They came out of the ground looking like they had gone 10 rounds with Uri Geller!
Other than that I can't fault the site!

Great family friendly site;
Plenty of space to relax
Fantastic woods to play, cycle, picnic in
Close (20 minute walk in woods and on pavement) to pretty Marlborough for shops & restaurants
Tesco 10 minute walk down hill for your BBQ needs!
Clean & tidy toilets, please note there are no showers - buy a Solar Shower, if nothing else it entertains the other campers!
This is a favourite site of ours to visit with friends & their children, ideal for the week-end.

This is one of my favourite sites for a weekend break as I love the location, just on the edge of Savernake Forest. The pitching area is surrounded by trees so you really feel that you are right in the forest. You can even hire bat detectors from the wardens, although we haven't tried this yet. The site has a very laid-back and relaxed atmosphere.
It is quite a basic site, with no showers and quite a basic toilet block, so I probably wouldn't come here for a long holiday, but it is perfect for a weekend. The wardens are very helpful and friendly and it is only a 20-25 min walk down the hill to Marlborough and its pubs/restaurants. There is also a Tesco about 10 mins walk away (although the campsite feels much further away from civilisation) which is useful for stocking up on barbecue and picnic food.
The site is quite a popular one and it can get a bit crowded at weekends in peak season.

We visited this site as our first camping experience. It's very beautiful and has good clean toilets. The only thing I didn't like was the road that ran past, it very busy and could be heard at 5 am. Apart from this it's a great site. The weather was terrible within 2 hrs of being there, however the camp site managers came straight out in the rain to check everyone was ok, they were lovely and most helpful

Cons - no showers, only four cubicles and one urinal in the gents.
Pros - Biggest rabbits you ever did see in the enclosure by the wardens' hut! Camping among the trees and you can walk off site into Savernake Forest.
The few facilities may make this one preferable for caravans. The wardens in their dark green poloshirts and their wooden hut give the place a National Park feel, but they're very helpful.
We were there on an August weekend but the site absorbed a lot of people without feeling crowded.
Shady trees were great when it got hot.
In response to another review, yes there are a lot of signs around, this is Forestry Commission territory after all! If that's going to bug you, best go elsewhere. The rules seem to be partly 'in reserve, ' it says 'no ball games except in the play area' but the wardens didn't seem bothered, presumably unless someone was causing a nuisance.
For us, a feeling of really getting away, even though only 40 min from home.
