Fantastic site right on the edge of a lovely forest.

Wardens were extremely friendly and helpful in giving guidance where to pitch. This is the first time they've opened all year round, and this does come with it's problems (no toilets during the winter months, muddy boggy ground etc), but the wardens were on hand to offer their advice and help if you were unfortunate enough to get stuck!

Luckily that didn't happen to us, and we have enjoyed two weekends in February in the most wonderful woodland setting.

About a third of the site had electric hookup, and there were a good number of water / waste points dotted around the site.

The site operates a very free pitch policy which is refreshing and gives you the freedom to find a great spot.

Will definitely return, whatever the time of year. (Can't wait to see the site in Spring)

This is a beautiful semi-wooded site on the edge of Severnake Forest with the attractive, historical town of Marlborough no more than 15-20 mins walk away by the footpath down the hill.

The only problem with the site is that it has a toilet block with sinks and hot water but no showers (this, I was told by one of the staff, was due to conditions laid down by the landowner.Lord someone.Who bequeathed the land for it's present use).

Aside from that one drawback this site is a delight and the surrounding forest has many good, flat, easy access footpaths and cycle routes.

Next to the campsite (and accessible from it). Is a large clearing in the woods popular with day visitors.

Friendly and obliging staff further add to the drawing power of this site.

Visited site over Halloween weekend as the nearest site we could find to Avebury. Weather was pretty awful with lots of rain but the site / pitch was OK with no flooding / surface water but with a bit of mud in places.
Toilets closed on Sunday lunchtime for the duration of the winter but as we had own facilities this didn't present a problem. A few hard standings would be useful for winter but maybe would spoil the 'pitch where you like' ethos.
A quiet peaceful site, a friendly warden, with plenty of historical sites nearby and within easy walking distance of Marlborough. Savernake Forest wonderful for early morning dog walking. Would stay at Postern Hill again.

Just returned from this site yesterday. Was met at reception by Graham who was the nicest friendliest warden I have met. He was amenable and very welcoming which was just the tonic we needed after 9 days of rain and wind at 3 other sites. The sun was shining we were told to find a pitch near an EHU and set up. Luckily we arrived early Friday for a 3 day stay by Saturday lunchtime the site was packed to overflowing. The toilet block was clean and user friendly. The woodlands walks excellent our 3 year old daughter and dog found the exploring and wildlife fascinating and Malborough town centre accessible and if you have a forest membership card discounts can be obtained at some retailers. We are returning next weekend as we found this site relaxing refreshing and more exploring is the best medicine for a stressful working life. Thanks again Graham for caring for our environment the site is a credit to you your staff and the forestry commission, and thanks for being vigilant with all the young children on site. Well done Postern Hill. Would recommend for any family weekend break.

We stayed here for 3 nights. We arrived on a hot Saturday afternoon at the end of July and the site was very busy! We were given a map showing where the EHU points were and told to go and find a pitch with a free point. Easier said than done! As people were allowed to pitch where they wanted we found it impossible to pitch near an EHU point whilst still observing the 6m rule. (What 6m rule?) There was a lot of noise with fireworks going off towards the end of the night despite them not being allowed, but to be fair, the noise didn't go on too late. It certainly was party central that Saturday night and for a few days after the bottle recycling bin was overflowing. The site quietened down after the weekend though and was more pleasant for it. The toilet block is tiny and cramped, with a keycode entry system - but we discovered that, in the ladies toilet anyway, the keycode system was rarely engaged. Washing up facilities were very poor with only 2 sinks and really low water pressure. On the last morning, there was no warm water for washing up. No shop, but reception sells ice cream and lollies. The walk into Marlborough starts off through lovely woodland but then brings you out on a new industrial estate, leading to a very busy main road with traffic whizzing by. Despite the faults we found with this site, we did enjoy our stay here and found plenty to see and do. We drove to Longleat from here and had a great day out. Also visited village of Laycock. Marlborough itself is a pleasant town with a good mix of shops, pubs and cafes. If this site was nearer, we would probably visit again but avoid arriving on a Saturday afternoon.

This is our second visit to this site this year, and it never fails to impress.

Quite a small site but perfect for our two young children to roam around, as we can see them from most parts of the site. There are no play facilities for the children but who needs them when you have a forest to explore just 100yds away.

The toilet block is always clean and tidy, and there are no showers, but this isn't a problem with a caravan but I'm sure a few tent owners would find it difficult to stay too long. To be honest I think if they had showers it would make the site too popular and lose some of its attraction.

Five minutes by car, and fifteen minutes on foot is Marlborough, which has everything you would need.

Highly recommended, and we are already planning our next visit, which says it all really.

We stayed for two nights and it was lovely. This site is perfect if you have a dog (lots of forest to get lost in!). Only a 15 minute walk to Malborough using the footpath were there are lots of shops and pubs.
The four toilet blocks were clean and depending on how busy it is most of the time there was hot water. The only thing that lacks is no shower facilities and also a small shop for milk, bread etc. would have been nice.
Overall a very pleasent site but not suitable for longer stays. We would definitely stay again for a couple of nights.

This is a really lovely site, set in amongst the trees of the Savernake forest, it's level (but you get some VERY big puddles when it rains, and boy did it rain.) Safe for youngsters to roam and play although there's no play equipment, just having the trees and hedges to play around was enough for my three.

The site is somewhat let down by the one small toilet block - four toilets each for men and women, and only two washing up sinks. We camped over the May bank holiday weekend (yes, the one where it rained A LOT) and after meal times there was always long queues to wash up and first thing in the morning there were queues for the loos - not good with young children. It may be better at quieter times but it didn't cope at this busy time. The hot water ran out too!

The site staff were extremely friendly and helpful and told us of cycle routes through the forest etc. The local area is superb with lots to see and do as mentioned by other reviewers. Overall maybe a site more suited to caravanners with their own showers/loos/sinks (although I don't think there's a chemical loo point!) or just for a weekend. A site we will be returning to.

This was the first campsite we visited since having children and we loved it. It's a beautiful site - not too large but the (unmarked) plots are shaded by lots of trees and quite secluded. There's one circular road around the site so if you choose the right plot you can see most of the site so it feels very safe for letting children roam and play. We went during term time so it was fairly quiet.

There's one central toilet block - clean but basic, with washing up sinks at the back with plenty of hot water. The toilet block has a keypad to enter (presumably to stop people walking in the forest from using it) so you have to accompany  younger children, and it's a bit of a nuisance having to remember the number every time. There are no showers so probably a site for a weekend rather than a longer visit.

There's direct access to the forest via footpaths that are suitable for buggies and bikes and there are barbecue and picnic sites not far into the forest. It's only about half an hour to Stonehenge and less to Avebury. Marlborough is only a few minutes drive away (though not a nice walk due to busy road and lack of pavements) and has a Waitrose supermarket and a few takeaways including Pizza Express, as well as being a beautiful town! There's plenty to visit in the area - lots of very pretty villages and lovely countryside.

We loved it and would go back here for a weekend.

Visited this site on a very wet weekend in June. Despite a *lot* of rain, the ground was reasonably well drained - it's on top of of a hill so this may help.

The site is in a lovely setting right in the middle of the forest. Pitches are not marked out, and you go wherever you find a decent space in the clearings between the trees. The site is divided split into two halves, one offering pitches with hookups, and the other just non EHU. It is spacious, and the 6 metre rule is insisted upon, and adhered to whilst we were there. We had a very friendly and efficient welcome, and were told to pitch anywhere we liked which was nice, so we had a little look around before selecting a spot we liked the look of

The site is run by Forest Holidays, which was part of the Forestry commission, but the management of their sites have just been taken over by the Camping and Caravanning Club. This means if you are a member of the CCC, you get a discount at this site (saved me £3.00 per night).

Facilities are limited to a portacabin type building which contains toilets and sinks. There are no showers on this site. The facilities were kept very clean and tidy at all times, and there was always plenty of hot water for washing, and washing up - I only found two sinks for this, but there may have been others elsewhere.

We had a lovely weekend, it really is lovely camping amongst the trees. You can walk off the site straight into the surrounding forest, and there were many well used and marked trails in the woods. We went for a walk, and the kids took their bikes, having a whale of a time 'offroading' in the woods. There are plenty of deer roaming the woods, and we were lucky enough to see a Muntjack, although only briefly before it bounded off in to the trees and out of sight. It's a peaceful site, and was very quiet by about 10pm - it was pouring, so that probably helped everyone decide to have an early night.

I can thoroughly recommend this site, for a relaxing and quiet stay, as long as you are happy with fairly basic ( but very clean ) facilities and no showers.
