New to all this, only our second outing with the caravan.
Initial thought upon arrival was that it was a little chaotic, with there being no marked pitches, something of a free for all. However, we soon found a good space and made ourselves at home. It was actually rather nice to have the freedom of where to pitch (some sites can be very fussy!). If you do want electric hook up make sure you have a good length cable, this way you can make the most of the 'no fixed pitch' freedom on offer.
We stayed two nights and despite being fairly busy we never had to queue for the toilets. Easily the quietest campsite we've stayed at (although new to caravanning have done a bit of camping), beautiful and peaceful. The toilets were always clean and the site as a whole nice and tidy.
No kids play area on site but our little ones (age 7&3) didn't mind, they had a fantastic time in the woods making dens and watching the wildlife. We also took a 5 min drive down to the Kennet & Avon Canal at Wootton Rivers where we watched the narrow boats going through the locks and our eldest enjoyed helping the boaters work the lock gates.
We had a great time and I would recommend this site, we'll certainly be returning.
The only draw back (as mentioned by most reviewers) is the lack of shower facilities. Unless you have good shower facilities in your unit this really is the limiting factor for how long you could stay here. Some decent showers would really complete this site.
There is a large Tesco a 5-10 min walk away for supplies.

On first impressions this is a very picturesque location and what would appear to be the ideal site, however, by the end of my weekend I wasn't quite so enamoured with the place.
The greeting and booking in was efficient and quick, but not overly friendly. The site as I drove around looking for a pitch was very attractive, about two thirds full with about half the pitches having EHU.
I found a spot under a tree on a flat bit of ground, most pitches being flat and chocks generally weren't needed.
So far so good, however, after setting up and cracking the first beer open I started feeling there wasn't something right, it was cold and dark and yet it was a pleasant, sunny May day and I'd been warm on the drive up. It was the light or lack of it because of the thick tree covering, by the end of the trip it had gotten really quite annoying.
As well as the lack of light, that admittedly didn't affect all pitches, I thought the toilets were substandard for the price and the proliferation of signs and do's and don't was simply too much. Three large signs saying 'push taps' on four sinks squashed tightly together just wasn't necessary, especially as these taps, like most campsite taps were obviously push taps.
Maybe I've been over critical on what some might see as minor points, especially when you consider how close the very pleasant town of Marlborough is, plus some nice forest on your doorstep. However, the light thing did get me down by the end of the trip.

We have spent 2 winter seasons at postern hill now (2009 and 2010) and are going back there this winter. We have also had a couple of short summer visits too.
Postern hill is a great example of how a campsite should be run. The team there are friendly helpful and always have your interests foremost.
Campsite rules are adhered to in every respect and everyone knows where they stand. The manager Graham, is so hands on and keeps the site in tip top condition.
The flowers, the little pets corner, the grass etc are all so beautiful. We would recommend this site to all.
Marlborough itself is a lovely town not too far away, there is a Tesco's in walking distance and somme lovely resturants and take aways.
The forest surrounds this site so lots of walking. Bike hire is available too. They love dogs but are very stricy about them being kept on leads.
There is a toilets and sinks also sinks for washing up, and of course electric. In the winter though the toilets etc are closed. A good team and a nice site!

A fantastic site amongst the trees of Wavernake forest.
If you have dogs, then the dog walks are on your doorstep, with miles of walking available.
The town of Marlborough is a lovely place with some nice shops if you are into shopping.
A waitrose down in the town is convenient for all of your groceries and beer, so all in all a nice weekend away.
The only downside is the Forestry Commission should be wearing a mask. Very expensive site for the facilities available.
May go back for a weekend

This was our second visit in 2 years. The site is as beautiful as ever and seemingly just as popular but just as previous reviews say, it's very expensive for a site with no showers and just a few toilet cubicles and handbasins. The two washing up sinks only had short queues during Aug 10 Bank Holiday weekend but there was hardly ever any hot water in them. We ended up taking a lot of half washed pots and pans back with us.
On the plus side the site has easy access to the forest with it's many unhilly footpaths and is good for cycling as well as walking. The site abuts a large public picnic and barbeque site which seems very popular with visitors. There is also a footpath from the site down the hill to Marlborough, it's about a 20 minute walk to the town centre and it's a pretty and interesting place.
For one to two nights we could cope without shower facilities but any more than that would start to become a problem for many. Next time I visit I hope we get a bit more in the way of facilities for the money charged.

This is a lovely site, loads of room with very level pitches, all like you are camping in the middle of woods, it was lovely just lying on the air bed listening to the owls over head!
Found the toilet block always clean but it was a pain having to put in the code every time you need the loo, even more so with 2 young children. It is a real shame there is no showers at this site!
Did also find a bit of dog mess lying around in places too.
Found the staff very helpful and the campsite well run. I did feel it was too expensive for what you got really.
It was ideal for visiting the old market town of Marlborough as well as taking a bit longer drive to swindon to the retail centre!
Went to the local pub and found that very nice indeed and well worth a visit!

Have stayed at Postern Hill twice. The site is in a really nice setting adjacent to Savernake Forest. The site doesn't seem as busy as other Forestry Commission sites and that's a bonus!
The site is maintained very well and have always found the toilet & washroom facilities to be clean. Washing up facilities are fine, up to the job but you can queue at busy times.
There is direct access to the Forest from the camp and it is criss-crossed with lots of paths and trails - ideal to walk and cycle.
You can get down to the Kennet & Avon canal within ten minutes of site and cycle along the towpath if you want to venture further a field. Marlborough is a fair but manageable walk from site and is good to visit if only to pick up groceries or visit the pub!
On both occasions we experienced clear nights and the skies above were spectacular.

Firstly, a great site for walking and for dogs. As long as its not too busy you will find a good pitch with hook up where you wish. Plenty of on site wildlife, rabbits and squirrels.
Its a real shame this site doesn`t have a shower block. If your caravan is equipped with a good shower it wont be a problem but camping in a tent could be a struggle after a day or so!
I found the pricing a bit expensive for a site that doesn`t have showers and doesn`t have to pay for water heating and shower block upkeep.
The extra costs for extra adults and children in the caravan soon bumps up the price especially £5 a night for an extra car! NCP prices for a bit of extra grass.
Will probably make a short visit again but until its fully equipped a day or two would be enough.

We stayed at this campsite over a bank holiday weekend. We arrived on the friday and liked the fact you could pitch where you wanted although by the Saturday it may have been more difficult to find a space as the site got very busy.
The surrounding area is very nice, good walks in the forest straight off the campsite, our dog loved it. We walked to Marlborough on friday evening, about 20mins downhill walk, very nice town, we had a lovely meal in a pub I think was called the Green Dragon where dogs are allowed inside which was great. Good Waitrose in the town centre. The walk back to the campsite was quite a steep uphill climb!
Avebury is worth a visit, stone circle, a bit like stonehenge, a few shops, pub etc. My criticisms of this site are that there are no showers, which we were aware of before we booked and felt we could cope with this for a couple of days, but although the toilets were clean, by sunday morning there was no hot water in the sinks in the toilet blocks or the washing up sinks which was inconvenient.
Also there are only 4 ladies toilets, I think the same in the gents and only 2 sinks for washing up,this caused queues especially on sunday when the site was very busy.
This is a lovely site but it definitely needs more toilets, sinks and hot water, unless you are visiting at a quieter time when I am sure it would be fine.

This was our 2nd visit to this site which is about a 45 min tow from home - so perfect for a weekend.
Plenty of space to pitch (we had EHU) when we arrived on the Friday evening. We were also lucky in finding 2 EHU points as my sister in law, husband and young baby joined us on the Saturday.
Toilet block was kept very clean throughout the duration of our stay.
There was a 'man in a van' who came round selling newspapers on the Saturday and Sunday morning.
Perfect for walks in the Forest as there is an access gate direct from the site.
We paid an additional £3 for a late stay enabling us to stay until 5.30pm.
