We spent a week here after reading the reviews but were a bit disappointed, the site itself is conveniently situated 7 miles from the M6 then 1. 5 miles down a well maintained road so access is very easy. Keswick is 11 miles away and for us we felt it was a little far out.
It is set in a dip and is a large site so the views from the majority of pitches are mainly of other caravans with the top of Blencathra visible in the distance. It isn't regimented though so you aren't looking into each others windows but it'd feel much nicer if there were 25% less pitches. Being in a dip does have its benefits though as one night we had gale force winds & were well protected, none of the vans or awnings suffered any damage so it gave us peace of mind later in the week when it became very windy again.
The fully serviced pitches are in the worst part of the site, a long straight row set between two high verges with no views at all.
The dog walk is useless, it's the grass verge on the entrance to the site so there's no room to exercise them well, there is another walk through the serviced pitches but it's a fair distance if you're the other side of the site and not nice for fellow caravanners if your dog can't hold itself until it reaches the walk. There is a good walk if you turn right out of the site and drive for about 100m, it's signposted 'Matterdale', you can park on the track and loose them off for a proper run.
We don't use site facilities but I went in twice to have a look for the purpose of my review and both times 3 out of the 4 toilets were dirty, they are only cleaned once a day and we never saw any staff other than the daily bin emptying, it would benefit from having an hourly check & clean if necessary.
There are two blocks which when clean are perfectly usable, each block has toilets, separate sinks, showers & underfloor heating. There is also a disabled toilet/shower room for which you get the key from reception for the duration of your stay.
Overall the site is a bit rough around the edges, the grass was long and about 5-6inches long around the electric stumps & drain covers and there are weeds growing through the hardstandings, the only part they mowed in the week we were there was the sites entrance.
We would only use the site as a one night stopover if we were heading further north but wouldn't stay there for a holiday again.

Stayed for two nights and as usual with the caravan club we were asked to choose our own pitch and what a pitch it was (number 83 if I remember). We perched ourselves with our window overlooking beautiful scenery.
Lovely very well kept site, spotless toilets and showers with underfloor heating. There are two sets of toilet blocks so although a busy site there were never any queues. The serviced pitches are at one end of the site and walking round them I thought that the unserviced pitches had much better views.
There was a good games room with dads and children playing table tennis, snooker and having a chat with the other families. There is a good information area with lots of leaflets maps etc. ,
Next to the caravan site is an adventure activity organisation and it was great to watch the many activities from our caravan, if anybody reading this had children or teenagers and it looked just the thing for them it may be a good idea to book in advance.
This is a good site for touring the north lakes or for stopping if going north or south as it is not too far from the motorway but far enough from any civilisation to feel you are really getting away from it all.
We will definitely return to this site.

We have just returned from a fantastic 5 night stay at the site, it was our 1st visit and it certainly won't be our last.
It is so easy to find and very handy for either visiting Penrith or Keswick.
The site is very well maintained, we loved the heated floor in the shower blocks.
The wardens were very welcoming.
We look forward to our next visit.

Very friendly welcome from warden, lovely pitch (we booked a serviced pitch) with very nice views. We found site to be very peaceful. Toilet block excellent. Couple of small play areas plus games room. Activity centre next door worth checking out - but bear in mind they get very busy. We managed to book all but one of the activities we wanted to do. The hour's horse trek was excellent. We visited Ullswater (approx half an hour's drive). Boat trips very popular, can also be combined with a walk but unfortunately we didn't leave enough time to do this so just did the round trip on the boat. The White Horse Inn near Keswick (few mins drive from site) is worth a visit - very nice food, very friendly, and very popular! Limited parking, we managed to park motorhome in pull-in opposite pub.

Stayed here for a week in August. Excellent facilities as usual from the Caravan Club. Staff extremely helpful and even assisted with pitching our unit and awning. As a disabled person this was terrific.
Lovely scenery, peaceful and quiet. Excellent location would recommend - booked again for Sept and Oct 2010
Wash block and showers are very modern, clean and heating is provided.
Games room and information room on site.
There is a children's play area near to the information block.
The site has a range of different pitches including fully serviced pitches. The site is not far form the M6 and is ideal for Penrith, Ullswater and Keswick. Definately recommend this site.
The access to the site is good and is only a few miles after turning off the A66.

This was our first caravan club site a little bit dissapointed with the toilet blocks I have been in better, but the views were lovely of blencathra. Pitches were huge plenty of room for van awning and car with room to spare.
T V reception was good as there is a ariel point near the hook up very handy just make sure your cable is long enough. There is rookin house next door which is an activity centre which we found a bit noisy, clay pigeon shooting was a nightmare as our dog is terrified of gun shots and loud bangs and I do think you should be told of this as I don't think we would of went.
There is a games room with table tennis and snooker and 2 small play areas but be warned bring insect repellent as the midges were unreal,as soon as evening came they were out and they were in swarms we had repellent and still got bit !Great for dog walking at the top of the site there is woods and walks in all directions.
My only criticism of the caravan club sites is that when we booked it showed full on the website but when we were there it was only half full so people book and don't turn up as you don't pay a deposit so other sites that show up as full probably aren't and that's a shame.

Had a week here this summer.Site itself is lovely very clean, excellent pitches, excellent shower blocks and the reception had a little stock of the basics bread coffee milk etc to get you started. There is a little park and a games room which our kids enjoyed and made plenty use out of.
My main grievances with the site are the noise from next door. The quad bikes were used every day and one night started shearing sheep at 7pm by which time our 1 year old was asleep(not for long after that started) I appreciate this isnt the sites fault but be aware if you want peace and quiet while your on holiday, this maybe isnt the best site to visit.
The other complaint was the wardens reluctance to tell parents about their kids using the campsite as a racetrack for their bikes. We had a few near misses with the kids and my car was almost hit by one valentino rossi wannabe who swerved to miss my daughter. There is a 5mph limit in force for vehicles and I feel bikes should be included in that as well,or even fully ban bike riding within the site.
All in all though a good site and would think about going back although I would book a fully serviced pitch next time as that seems a bit quiter than where we were.

Stayed here for 5 nights at the end of June.
Very easy to find, with no windy roads or tight bends. Just a few miles from the M6 in the northern lakes.
About 6 units all arrived at once, so the small reception was busy, but they dealt with it very efficiently. You book in, chose your pitch and then return to tell them where you are located.
Super pitches are to the left, the rest to the right. To be frank, the super pitches are in the poorest area, and though we initially wanted one, we were glad we could not. They are in a sort of quarry area, with limited views. The rest of the site is well spread out with lovely views of the surrounding hills.
We pitched up at the far end of the site, near to the next door activity centre. Do not be concerned, it is not noisy and it is quite nice to watch things going on. It was busier at the weekend, but not a problem at all. Certainly the views from that area are very nice.
Normal CC - well maintained and clean toilet blocks (2), with very large showers. Nice small shop with papers ordered the day before. The site was fullish, but it never seemed crowded.
2 official dog walks. First is through the super pitch area. It is quite a long walk, with good views in places, but a bit tatty. We saw very few using it. Second is past reception and along the drive towards the entrance, using the very wide verges on either side. It may sound poor, but there are lovely views of the surrounding fells and we used it a lot. There is also a really nice walk along the small river bank. Though not an official dog walk, we used it a lot also. Nice babbling brook.
Plenty to see within a short drive. Keswick, Ambleside etc. No pub within walking distance unfortunately.
As it was late June, it stayed light until very late and watching the sunset behind the fells on a mild summer evening with a glass in hand was a real joy.
Unfortunately we were food for the local mozzies. Even though we used 100% DEET, I got some bites. It is no fault of the site, but just due to its locality in a farming area.
Overall a fine site in a lovely rural area with little to fault it. Great for a short break, or as a stop off when on the M6.

Just returned from 6 night stay at this lovely site our second visit and we are booked to return in August. Wardens as always really friendly usual CC site facilities. Really nice site shower block busy however we used own so never caused us a problem.
We could not hear any noise from 'next door' the whole time we were there. There is a hot food van comes onto site on Friday and Saturday selling baked potatoes and couple of other dishes looked really nice however we never tried them.
Couple of small play areas for children. We used as base to do some walking in the area ideal for this, as some lovely walks just a short drive away.

Yes, this site has the usual CC advantages of online booking, reasonable sized pitches, clean facilities and choice of pitches (though for some unexplained reason we weren't given the option of pitching on the upper part of the site).
But. Personally, I would not choose to go back. Where we were pitched there was noise from the activity centre and this went on until quite late in the evening. I think they also sometimes have clay pigeon shooting which is something for dog owners to be aware of, as many dogs hate the noise of this. And the site itself was less peaceful than many; I guess a lot of families come because of the activity centre which of course is fine but on the other hand may not suit everyone.
The site is in a very exposed location and the surrounding terrain is boggy and bare. Maybe it was better before they cut down the trees. I thought it was bleak, and we were there in hot sunny weather. I wouldn't want to be there in rain and wind which I would guess is more often than not.
A word of warning; if you approach this site along the dual carriageway from the west (Keswick )direction you have to make a dangerous right turn. It would be safer to approach from Penrith.
