Site 1 of 5 on our North of England and Scotland Tour.
Access is easy off the M6 J40 and good A road to within a mile of the site. Site entrance is well sign posted and provided no access problems.
The site is set in a bowl high above the lakes and can be quite exposed, so storm straps for awnings are a must.
The site is mostly given over to large hard standing pitches (rock pegs are required) with some grass pitches in the centre, though these have limited use as the ground was quite boggy even in July. TV reception is poor but the EHU bollards have TV hook up.
There are 2 large toilet blocks and cleaning times are staggered. All the amenities were spotlessly clean at all times and coped admirably with a full site. The site has a useful games room with a few gaming machines, pool tables and a table tennis table.
Reception sold a few odds and ends but for any shop a 10 mile trip into Penrith is needed and the nearest Caravan spares shop is a 50 mile round trip.
Good dog walks on site and very friendly and helpful wardens.

Well we stayed for a week here and loved every minute, and we were on the serviced pitches which were at the better end of the site as there is only around 30 ish and you wouldn't know that the site had over 100 pitches. It was so quiet. Dog walk was fab, up our end, you can walk all the way into Matterdale woods. The dog walk outside of reception out the gate is ok, but not big. You have Rookin Hall Farm next door, which provides Archery, Quad Biking, Horse Riding, Clay Pidgeon shooting, and its just outside the entrance to the caravan site.
Toilets and showers marvellous, always clean, and plenty of room, only had to queue once for about 10 mins in the morning b4 they closed for cleaning. The other shower block closes for cleaning at a different time so always one available. The staff were all pleasant and friendly, no problems at all. Listening to the babbling brook was lovely, the dogs have had a ball.
Some statics up near our end, but only about 10 pitches and too were vacant without statics at all, and only 3 families visited the others whilst we were there, but all very quiet and peaceful. You can get some great photos from the dog walk of stunning scenery. Visited Keswick, Ullswater, all thru the little villages, had a pint in Ambleside, weather was absolutely great, only one wet day, and even that was stunning. Will defo be back to this site, and the area itself.

Just returned from our 12 night stay at the site. The site is very clean and well maintained by the wardens who are all very pleasant.
There were two toilet/shower blocks that were always very clean although along way to walk for those at the top of the site.
The dog walk is a large grass verge that runs along the entrance lane to the site, ok for morning and night time visits. At the other end of the site there is a little walk that will take you on a loop, through a gate to the edge of the forest, along a little lane, back down the main road to the front entrance of the site. About a 20 minute steady walk.
We stayed on a serviced pitch and found those pitches a little on top of each other and not really with any views. We struggled with the drainage so ended up using the wastemaster anyway. Standard pitches however seemed better laid out, most of which had great views.
There was a playroom for children and play area outside with climbing frame. Information room is located in the children's playroom, there is a little map on the wall showing locations of places to eat and there are menus in the book in there.
The site is well positioned off the A66 for trips out and not far from Penrith and the supermarkets.
We had a mouthwatering meal at The Troutbeck Inn, well worth a visit. I would stay at this site again but on a standard pitch and only for a short break or as a stop off if travelling to Scotland.

First visit to this site, & this part of the Lakes, & have to say very impressed. We were lucky to come during the heatwave & had a fantastic week. We found the site to be ok,nice drive down from the A66,but far enough not to hear any road noise, very quiet at night. Middle pitching area did seem a little cramped, but lower down we pitched by a stream & it felt more relaxed & a little more spread out.
Facilities seemed ok so no complaints. Nice view to Blencathra, but didn't seem to be too many walks direct from the site.S pent every day out & about visiting all the Lakes, a couple of cruises, plenty of walks & a morning climbing Great Gable. Buttermere has to be one of the nicest places to spend a day.
It has taken a while for us to discover the Lakes, & felt this a better site than Park Coppice at Coniston which is strangled by too many trees & not enough open space to enjoy the sun. So nice to sit out until 10 at night.
Can highly recommend a meal at the Troutbeck Inn just up the road, fantastic food ( when we were there ), if a tad pricey. As good a holiday as we have had, & we will return to this site again.

Had an excellent 8 night stay at this superbly maintained site.
All the usual caravan club facilities which are maintained to a very high standard.
Wardens welcoming and helpful when I needed to borrow some tools.
Tv signal poor, however by plugging into the booster system I was able to tune in to all digital channels.
Kids made many friends and enjoyed building dams in the stream and playing table tennis and pool in the games room.
Already planning our return!

Stayed here for one night on the way home after touring Scotland. Maybe we were just tired but we weren't overly impressed. The site didn't seem to be like the picture in the book as it felt more cramped not open like the photo. The toilets and showers again seemed cramped and a bit dark also the dustbins were overflowing and the elsan point smelled. There is a one way system but this seemed a little confusing in places. The dog walk was nicely kept and adequate for mornings and nights. The pitches are quite close to the one opposite so we had a motorhome looking directly into our front window when they returned. There is no television signal unless you have an outside aerial point as you can use their tv point and no orange phone signal. It was ok for an overnight stop as its quite close to the motorway but not up to the standard of most club sites.

One thing with this caravan club site is that it is one of my favourite locations in the UK. I love the surrounding areas, such as Keswick, Pooley Bridge, Ullswater and Derwent Water.
When we arrived the wardens were very friendly as as it was our first time out with our baby girl we were asked if we would like a key to the baby changing facilities, which we happily took for the weekend.
We had a serviced pitch for the weekend and the pitch sizes are very generous with lots of space, plus the added factor of not having to walk for miles to collect water and empty the grey water made it much easier.
The toilet facilities were excellent and probably one of the cleanest sets of toilet blocks I have come across so far. The showers were also nice and baby changing facilities were clean and nice.
The only minor fault I could find with the site is that TV reception is poor unless you are on a serviced pitch in which you can plug you co-axe into the Ariel socket provided and that mobile phone reception is poor for Orange, however there are payphones at the toilet blocks which have excellent prices of 40p for 20 minutes to all calls. But none of these minor faults matter as I said previously, the location is great with a beautiful backdrop outside of your unit and in such a place like this, that is all that matters.

Great weekend here. The snow capped hills were breathtaking. On the down side, the 2 toilet blocks are very close together so if you are at the far end, past the statics it's a bit of a trek. The site description refers to 2 dog walks. The first one is nothing more than a grass verge a couple of hundred yards long alongside the entrance road. The second, although it says route to Matterdale Forest, doesn't actually take you there as the Forestry Commission has a gate and a no entry sign to stop you going in. So in practice you just go up a path to a rough bit of road which runs for about a quarter of a mile to the main road. The wardens themselves were very friendly.

Excellent site - extremely busy in March so that must speak for its popularity.
Wardens are lovely - very friendly - toilets / showers immaculate. In fact whole site extremely well kept.
Its a very large site - over 160 pitches - so it does feel rather full. However that's just a comment for those that prefer smaller sites.
Overall very high standard on the site and recommended for a stop in the North Lakes.

This is a first class site, set in a beautiful location with stunning views. We spent 4 nights here over the coldest period the area has seen for some time -7. But we had a fantastic stay and the views around the area were truly magnificent. The wardens were helpful and friendly. The 2 toilet blocks were immaculate, however, one did close over the weekend due to low numbers. But both had decent sized showers and cubicles with sinks and hairdryers within allowing privacy. There is plenty to do in the area, as well as walking. My only criticism would be on the final day the departure out of the site consists of a slight incline then a bend leading up a short but fairly steep hill. As the weather was so icy the slope had been well gritted and was OK to drive up with car and van, however, the approach to the slope was never gritted and caused units to get stuck and slide, caravanners were left to sort this themselves, no assistance from the wardens.
