What a little gem of a site! The very kind owners took pity on us and re-opened their site when they heard that the site we had booked had closed shop and not told us. This was 5 days before Christmas.
The site is excellently located next to the park and ride, and also the biggest M&S, NEXT & JOHN LEWIS I've seen! The site was tidy and away from the road.
Yes the toilet/Shower facilities though very clean could have done with some heating, especially at that time of year, however, this was not a problem as we had our own facilities.
We really enjoyed our stay, and enjoyed the humorous interaction with the owners. They even visited us on Christmas day with a card and box of choccies. !Fab. Thank you!

This is the most basic campsite we have stayed in as we went without the children. We had a tiny 2 man tent with electric and it cost us £19 a night for the Friday and Saturday, which given the location was very reasonable.
The facilities are the main drawback to the site. We were shocked to have to queue at 3am for the 1 toilet! I don't mind paying for the shower either but believe it could be improved by not starting the timer until the shower warmed up. It started before even turning it on and then had a considerable wait for hot water. It was very temperamental with the heat and got scorching hot every few seconds. There was 1 small rubbish bin that was pretty full. The washing area was also very basic-a sink by the toilet block.
It would have also been nice to be a bit more spread out. I felt the 3 tents that were there were very close together so had very little privacy.
All in all it does what it says on the tin-it was very close to york and we had a bed for the night
|
Management response: Dear Mari 81
We are sorry to find you could not use the shower correctly - 600 people this year found it brilliant, but you are the only person who found it difficult. As for waiting to use the toilet at 3 AM every one would be in bed?! As for the sink what more could you expect, it has hot and cold water the same as at your home.
You had a large tent, as I recall, with hook up and 25 yards away from anyone else. Looking in our book we only had two tents that weekend and three quarters of an acre for you to spread out. When a tent has a hook up I ask you all to use the full 25 meters so you would be a long way off any one else. We did ask you if all was OK you had no complaints then.
Our site is better than many. We have spent a lot of time trying to make it the best we can, do not forget we are only a small 5 van site. If you read the reviews I have informed all visitors that we had an application for two showers and two toilets refused by our council - it cost us £2,500 and 1,500 emails and all to help campers. As of now we have fought and have won a further application to build a Disability toilet for all to use.
We are sorry again that you are so disappointed I do ask visitors to inform me about a complaint while on site or before you leave - you could have moved your tent, it would not be a problem.
I viewed your other reviews and read you had also made complaints and had issues about two other sites so we are not alone. When others read yours then all our other reviews we hope they will deduce you are incorrect.
Warm regards Messrs Wardell |

We stayed here on saturday night, through the thunder and lightening storms. Along with us their was 3 girls aged 11.
The three girls stayed in the camping pod. The owners of the site knew of her birthday and very kindly decorated the inside with balloons and banners. They loved it. Sorry to all the neighbours they kept awake.
The caravan site is clean, tidy and very friendly. A lovely location. Spot on for the centre of york, wether walking or cycling. Thanks guys had a great night and a very friendly welcome. A Gardiner.

A very friendly site. The owner likes fish. We stayed 2 nights at £43 not too bad, only a single toilet & shower that you have to pay for. But as there was only a few other units it was ok.
Good location for a York visit with the bus depot within a few mins walk. A large shopping complex around the corner so supplies was easy.
We would use again.

What a fantastic weekend, the owners are very helpful and could not do enough for us.
The location is perfect, 30 min walk into York, or a 5 min walk to a new retail site. If you do not like walking, there is a park and ride into York 2 minutes away and is very cheap!
The prices include hook up, and do not increase on bank holidays, or the school holidays.
The campsite is clean and well kept, we would strongly recommend it, we will be returning again soon!
Thank you again, see you soon!

We have had a New Year stay here as it was situated near the cycle/walk path into York which was a very pleasant 40 min stroll into the city centre.
Park and ride 7 min walk away if needed but overhead barrier so be warned if you are a large unit. It is in the middle of construction but will be a super retail park when finished.
Camp site was easy to find straight off A64 and a very kind, warm welcome from the owners who tell you everything you need to know and we had a laugh with them.
The down side has to be the single shower/toilet/washbasin block which is ok but you do have to have 20ps or £1. 00 coins to operate the shower.
We were there and another van turned up but we managed as we were out all day and they went the next day
Not much fun if the site is full or people didn't clean up after themselves but we are self sufficient so would definitely stay there again due to the location.

Management response: We would like to thank all who decided to write a review all brilliant we do try to help all the best we can sorry if at some time we have fallen short.
Many thanks for your review could I just point out we are only a CS site and are not required to set up any toilet facilities the CCC do not ask us to do this.
We decided to give you and others a shower amenity I repeat it was not required.
We have spent over £1, 500 on a planning application also 1, 500 email's two appeals to build two toilets and two showers and all refused by the York City Council planners.
We have also put forward an application for a disability toilet again York City Council planners have refused this.
I call it discrimination against the disabled.
So before any of our visitors makes a complaint please see me first you only need to speak to me before you make a complaint all can be explained.
As for twenty pence for a shower we have been informed we are cheap as other sites charge up to £2 as for the pound coin that's for the rich LOL only joking.

We stayed at the chowdene campsite for three nights. What a lovely welcome from the owners and what a fantastic site. We found plenty to do in York we will definitely stay here again. The toilet block, although there was only one, it was clean and tidy. It is about ten mins walk to the park and ride, but it took us half an hour to walk into York where there is plenty to do. The site itself is well maintained with all the amenities

To be honest we were disappointed by this site generally.
As previously stated the position of the site in terms of access to the park and ride which is a short journey into York is fabulous and taxis back from the city centre cost about £7 in the evening/night so very good access generally.
However, I think the facilities are too basic. With only one toilet and shower on site designed for 5 tourers and 15 tents I would hate to be here when it is busy. Just inadequate. Similarly, with site that is open 365 days a year there needs to be some form of heating in the toilet room.
When we arrived we were told that the shower was broken and that the owner had tried to call us but could not get through - we left home at 10am by which time he must have known the problem existed. The owners attitude was unfortunate to say the least e. G. He said to my wife - 'He [me] can hose you down with the hose pipe of you like'. Although he was trying to be funny it did not come out right at all. We were given a take it or leave it discount (saving £8 over two nights) and told if not happy to find somewhere else to stay - as this was a weekend away from the kids for our anniversary and we wanted access to the park and ride we took it and stayed. To be fair the owner can't be blamed for the fact that the plumber made a mistake with the shower, but he didn't show much of an inclination to get it fixed either. He also passed comments about wanting to close up but 'people keep ringing' as if customers were putting him out by wanting to stay with him - either it is open all year or it is not, surely?
In my vast experience of camping/touring the owners of sites come round and check things are ok, ask if they can do anything for you etc. (especially when there is a problem as was the case here with no shower) but we never saw him after our arrival.
There is potential on this site but the facilities are too basic and the owner seems rather disinterested. Others have clearly had a much time here than we did, on balance we are unlikely to return.

This site was very convenient for a quick weekend break in York. Chowdene is just a few minutes from the A64. It was good value for money, with an immaculately clean toilet/shower room. The owner was helpful and friendly, explaining the nearby amenities on arrival and giving us tips on local food/shopping options. The Park and Ride to York city centre is seven minutes' walk away; a 10-minute bus ride and you're walking down the Shambles. We'll definitely be going back to this site.

A great little CL site which is in an ideal position to visit the city of York. There is a Park and Ride within walking distance which was very handy. While there we also visited The York Aero Museum, a really great day out and well worth the money (which wasn't much).
The site itself is really good but we thought that the actual pitches could do with another couple of feet of hard standing, the toilet and showers were immaculate and the shower for 20 pence was good value.
The owners of the site were very friendly and also very helpful in siting our van on the far end pitch, which was awkward due to the field being sodden and not being able to get a good swing in.
A site that we'll definitely use again, expensive for a CL site but it had the amenities of a large site so it was good value for money.
