Autumn half term 3 night Sunday to Wednesday break to York with the family (2 adults + 2 young children) started off fine as we found the Chowdene site be most welcoming in most respects.
The entrance is not the most welcoming, but after driving down a drive you are presented with a small field with all amenities to hand. The owner lives in the bungalow attached to the site and was helpful in assisting us with a very long hose to fill the water tank of our motorhome and pointing out the facilities the site had.
The majority of the site was taped off due to the heavy rain experienced in the week before arrival.
During the evening OUR motorhome developed a fault with the electrics which meant we had no heating or lighting but we survived.
Next morning we checked out the toilet / shower facilities and found there is only 1 toilet and 1 shower shared between both sexes in the same small block. This was not sufficient for a family of four on an empty site.
We enjoyed York's Park And Ride facility which is very handy, just a 5 minute walk as is the Monks Cross shopping centre which is only a further 5 minute walk away.
Upon our return from and enjoyable day out in York we once again endured our problematic motor home but survived.
Next morning we all decided we had had enough due to OUR electrical problem. I happened to bump into to the owner and explained we had problems and that we were leaving a day early. Now considering the site was empty apart from us I enquired whether there would be a possibility of returning during a quiet period next season a credit be applied for 1 night. Before I could finish my sentence I had my reply NO! As the site charges a not cheap £19. 00 + £2. 50 per child I explained that it would be during low season. His only offer was if I stayed for a week he may do something. So the owner would rather accept £24. 00 already received, rather than X number of £24. 00's for a further stays in the future.

Came across this little site by accident whilst visiting friends nearby. It was off a busy A road and first the impression was not great. However as you pull round into the spacious field at the rear it was a lovely surprise! A little haven, a well tended and pristine little oasis with all the amenities of the big sites just scaled down for 5 vans.
A rather small toilet block and one shower (meter fed) was rather small although speaking to the Owner he has planning consent for something a bit bigger soon.
I found this site more perfect as I went along, the pitch sizes are enormous and its location is ideal for a cycle ride into York (I didn't need to use my car for the whole time I was there) taking only 11 mins to ride into the city centre with loads of places to lock it up once in the centre. I could have spent a week just looking round this lovely place.
There is also a Park and Ride service about 3 mins away from the site too I didn't use it but some of the neighbours did, and a pool complex over at Monks Cross too. Any provisions required were a 5 min ride into Monks Cross with 2 huge Supermarkets ASDA and Sainsburys and even an ALDI for us tight Yorkshiremen! together with more retail stores than you can shake a stick at. We had a lovely meal on the Saturday night at the Bay Horse in Murton (about 3 miles away)which was an up market country Inn with excellent food and quite reasonable with some lovely local ales. There is also a Toby carvery just a half mile away which is not my cup of tea but would be great for a family meal or a Sunday Carvery.
I came away from this site feeling disappointed only for the reason that I could not stay a little longer. David made us feel very at home he is a character but a nice one at that and deserves to be far busier than he is.
If you fancy visiting York and have a few days give this site a try it really is all about Location Location Location ! I paid £19 per night this included an Awning and Hook up and I was pleased with this especially as he gave me half the contents of his veg patch when I left!.

My girlfriend and I went to stay for a night at Chowdene. First class hospitality and we have never felt so safe and welcome. They went out of their way to help us with every step of our stay. They had such a great sense of humour and are so pleasant to talk to. Definitely be going there again.
All the facilities are perfect for any campers such good value for a lovely stay. There's a toilet and shower block and
We had a night out in the lively city of York, such an amazing historic place.

What a wonderful site Chowdene in York is. It was spotlessly clean lovely and flat and very well run. It was also convenient for getting in and out of York city, as the Park and ride bus was only around the corner. This was so useful for us because we have a motorhome and it meant we could leave the van on site and jump on the bus. But most important of all was the fact that the site owners were such lovely warm people, they made us feel so welcome. THANK YOU BOTH.

This was our 2nd visit to this lovely little site this year. A splendid little site that is an excellent location for York, with the park and ride being close by.
This is a CL site (1 toilet and 1 shower), but found it to be very child friendly. York is a fabulous city, and anyone wanting to visit on a budget, should consider this friendly and convenient site.
Will definitely visit again.

My daughter and I stayed one night in the Glamping Pods at the Chowdene site. The site is not strongly geared toward children, but it is child-friendly. If one were to be at the site when other children were camping, there is plenty of room for them to play in the field.
David and Cath could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We ran out of cash because of cab fares on the way to the site, and Cath kindly drove us to the shop so we could get cash and dinner staples, then waited while I had to call the card company and get them to facilitate my cash withdrawal. They would not let us pay them extra and did not complain at all about the extra help we needed.
The site for campers and tents is clear and well maintained. The toilets and showers are in a lovely interior space, not built just on concrete. There is a very useful outdoor washing up area, and the water is very nice for drinking. The site is well-lit at night for finding one's way to the toilets, but is not too bright or intrusive.
The glamping pods could use a bit more ventilation, and perhaps some sanding on the bed areas, but they are clean, spacious, and comfortable. We slept beautifully, and David and Cath even came by to remind us of leaving time so that we didn't oversleep past 10. It was a lovely space and we had an excellent night there.

What a lovely little site, and so close to York, all its sights and facilities. We stopped for three nights straight after the Bank Holiday, the site was beautifully clean which some that we have been to directly after a busy holiday period have not been. There was also a lot of space between units.
The owners are great people, very welcoming and informative about local amenities and services in the area. A great few days break, we will be visiting again in the near future. I could imagine that if the site was full there might be a loo queue at times but through no fault of their own the owners have been unable to increase the number of toilets though not through lack of Dave trying!
We thought it was a good price for a site so close to a large city especially as it included electric hook up !

Great site, easy found, first impressions from the approach road were so so but after turning into the drive and onto the campsite any apprehension soon disappears,
then we were greeted by Dave who helped to locate our camper on a level hard standing pitch with our awning on the grass it was perfect, some road noise during the day but that disappeared early evening.
Dave gave us maps of York and lots of info on where to eat and York’s many attractions and was all round very helpful.
Walked into York in about 30-40 mins on a lovely sunny day, spent all day in York and had a great weekend. We met some nice people on the site that made the stay even better.
Lookout for the birds in and around this site, we saw Owls, numerous hawks and beautiful Goldfinches while just sitting by our camper, it all adds to a great stay.
The single toilet and shower were clean and we had no problems, we met people who had stayed on the site before who gave it top marks as we will.
A lot of work has gone in to create this site and the owners have done a great job for us camper’s top marks.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this site. We were met by the lovely owners who couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. On our 2nd day we had torrential rain, but again the owners were around, not just once, to make sure we were ok.
The facilities were very clean and, compared to some sites, very good value re; hot water. The site is easy to find, very convenient for the local shops or access to York.
The site is peaceful and quiet, with lots of bird life around. I look forward to visiting again, especially to see them again.

We have just returned from spending three days at this site, and it was absolutely marvellous. The owners are incredibly friendly and welcoming (often coming down for a chat or to see if you are getting on well) and the facilities are clean and overall the place is very well kept.
It makes for an ideal base for anybody who wishes to travel into York (being only minutes away from the nearest park and ride) and also is a five minutes drive from a large-scale-retail park.
However, the site is still very quiet and peaceful which makes it an all around ideal little camp.
We will definitely be returning again!
