First time camping and we loved it.
The problem is that as this was our first time, we don't yet have anything to compare it to.
On arrival, we were booked in and taken to our pitch which was on a slight incline, but not knowing any different, I thought 'Thats good, we can put our heads at that end, at the top of the slope, so we should be more comfortable'.
Wrong. We spent the first night sliding downhill, then doing caterpillar impressions, trying to get back up.
But apart from that, we loved our first experience.
One of the toilet / shower blocks was a short walk away. There was only one shower, but it was free and hot.
The block was usually clean, but it's not the owners fault when campers fail to clean up after themselves.
There is a great play park for kids, a small shop where you can pre order your morning paper, and a chippy that opens every evening and serves breakfast from 9.
The camp is right on the Tissington Trail, which provides a traffic free 3 mile walk into Ashbourne. The other way takes you to Parsley Hay, 8 miles away, or if you just want a short stroll, Tissington is only 1 mile (didn't see a pub there but its a very pretty village).
As we were in a group of 1 tent and 2 caravans (all pitched together) we didn't bother with the local pubs, but the Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley is 1 mile down the road, or the Dog and Partridge at Thorpe is 3/4's of a mile down the Tissington Trail (turn right up the road signposted Thorpe).
As new campers, our plan at the moment, is to find a few sites that we really like, within an hour or so of our home in Stoke-on-Trent, that we can visit a few times per year.
Ashbourne Heights is definitely on the list.

I stayed here with my 9 year old daughter and her friend for 2 nights (Mon-Tues) during the first week of the summer school holidays.
The site was easy to find just off the main Ashbourne - Buxton road and well signposted.
The staff in reception were very welcoming and showed us to our pitch. We were located on the tent field (with hook-up) adjacent to the very large and well maintained kids play area.
As it was the school summer holidays I was expecting the site to be fairly full, so imagine my delight to find only 3 other tents on the very level, beautifully tended field.
I was led to believe that come Friday evenings the tents and caravans arrive en-masse so I was delighted to have avoided the weekend.
There are 3 toilet and shower blocks, and the one adjacent to our field had 2 toilets and a shower (ladies) and were cleaned regularly. The showers were free and provided plenty of very hot water at a good pressure rate. They were of a push button nature, but having spent half my life in and around the countries swimming pools I have become well accustomed to pressing the button whilst showering!
The little shop was well stocked and pretty reasonably priced (not sure what the opening hours were but seemed to be 9-6ish). They even stocked a range of lagers and wines!
There are 2 pubs in Fenny Bentley (that we found) - both are walkable or cyclable from the site, although the main road is fairly busy and the return journey is all uphill (which was a challenge on the bike after partaking in a couple of moderately alcoholic drinks!). Both do food and the Bentley Brook Inn has a very large beer garden with kids playground and did a very nice rump steak!
The entrance to the Tissington trail was half way up the hill to the site and provides a fairly easy and safe walking or cycling route. There are many off-trail footpaths and cycleways which provide more challenging terrain if you wish.
All in all we had a very enjoyable few days at this campsite and in the surrounding countryside and will definitely think about going back.

We had a great break here and it is fantastic for kids. The Rally Room is really useful in bad weather as you can take your food and eat in there. The takeaway food looked great and very handy to have to supplement what you bring. Good, well stocked shop. Friendly staff who accommodated our party of 6 units
Sorry, but do have a negative which I have seen in other reviews too - the toilet and shower facilities are tired and not cleaned often enough. The soap dispensers ran out and were not filled, the toilets were often dirty. My feeling was that the management were concentrating on the Lodges and not looking after the campers properly.
We went last year and it was cleaner, the only change I could see was a fence erected to stop the Lodge owners having to see us campers!

This was our first camping trip since having kids. We were on the first field on the right as soon as you enter the site, on an electric hook up pitch. Right by the access road but noise from cars and people coming and going wasn't a problem and although not completely full wasn't noisy at all.
This field had a lovely open view to the west but was also quite exposed on its western side so could probably get quite windy. Would need to be careful with really yong kids and proximity to road although field does have a fence along most of the boundary with the road.
Other pitches are either right next to the play area (which would be great for kids but quite noisy until late in the evening as kids were still using the play area after the 9pm closing time) or in the furthest field which was very busy and quite noisy. The other fields were more enclosed so probably more sheltered.
Toilets/showers were quite a trek from our field, were OK but could do with an upgrade.
Play area great for the kids and space on our field and on part of the play area for ball games. We used the swimming pool but bit disappointed that we had to pay extra for this. Pool was good but ladies' changing rooms were quite dirty, especially the floor.
Staff were really pleasant and helpful and good choice in the shop.
The site is right next to the Tissington Trail (for cycling and walking) so it was great for a walk to Tissington, which is a lovely village, for lunch. Also very close to Ashbourne and Dovedale and Carsington Water which is good for a day out with kids, is about 20 minutes away.
Overall was an OK site but we found it to be quite expensive per night for a pitch so didn't think it was good value for money, especially considering the quality of the toilet/shower facilities and having to pay for the pool.

Great site with something for everyone, fantastic play area large pitches, plenty of toilets and showers (would benefit an upgrade)
The best thing I found about this site was the staff and they couldn't do enough. Had a great time, the kids loved the swimming pool and play park. Loads to do locally. We visited Ashbourne and Buxton, went to Pooles carvern in the centre of Buxton plenty of local pubs, Hot air balloon rides just outside the site if your brave enough.
Not for me. Loads of walks went for a day out dove? (cant remember the exact name) out turn right first right keep going big river and car park.
Great walk here by the river but only the strong survive, just remember when you are walking you have to walk back I was cream crackered.

Overview: site in a great location for visiting the local area. It's surrounded by rolling fields with lots of sheep and cows, often fighting to see who can make the most noise late at night and early morning. The campsite was pretty full when we arrived but had plenty of room for our large tent, canopy and car. Staff were very nice and friendly.
Good points:-
Indoor pool, chargeable for 1 hour stints
Indoor shop well stocked with good prices
Nice kids play area
Our tent area in Thorpe Meadow was very spacious
Washing up area always had warm/hot water
Bad points:-
Showers not always hot. Early morning and late at night scalding with no control over temp. Due to be overhauled but no idea when.
Loo roll not always present so take your own.
Certain pitch areas, especially Greenacres, looked a little crowded.
Rally room a good space to watch tv but some kids messed it up whilst we were there so had to be shut for cleaning which was inconvenient for the rest of us.
The ladies shower block was not always the cleanest or tidiest but this was more due to visitors not cleaning up after themselves so it wasn't always a delight to use the sinks. They could definitely do with more staff as the shower block was only checked once in 24hrs on one particular day and there was always toilet paper strewn around the floor and more often than not none in the dispensers.
Bonus points - the showers near the lodges were constant and not push button and there is a plug point for hairdryers etc.
We didn't try the local pubs near the site but drove in Osmaston as the food at The Shoulder of Mutton is just excellent especially the sunday lunch.
Final thought, it's not the cheapest place but if you want a quiet site with no bar then this would be the place. We wouldn't turn down another visit here but would check out other places first.

Lovely site only let down by the rather high price, but from looking around at other sites in the area, they all seem about the same.Must be the area!
We were first time campers with 3 boys, who thoroughly enjoyed the grassy area by the play park for football. The toilets were clean, but ran out of toilet paper towards the end of the day. There was plenty of hot water for the shower and although there was only one, I (the only female in our group) never had to queue on any of the 3 mornings we were there.
The on site shop has most things you might need and the staff were very friendly and helpful. When we arrived we were allocated a pitch which had a hole in the middle of where the tent would be going, so they changed it for us no problem. EHU was a great 16amp feed so we had no problems at all with the electric. There are animals around the site at night (we think we had a fox in our tent porch!), so make sure no food is left anywhere that can be got at! Martin the Takeaway man is very nice and the food he sells is very reasonable and good (especially his breakfasts!).
We were there to go to Alton Towers which was only 25mins away and easy to find. Ashbourne is a lovely town to visit too.
All in all would visit here again, nice site, but not sure how the facilities would hold up when it's very busy.

After coming back from our camping jolly we were slightly disappointed.
The good points.
The staff are friendly the park is tidy but fairly minimal. The swimming pool (at extra cost)was clean warm but fairly deep even at shallow end!.
Free showers.
The manager did help us with jump leads when our car battery was flat.
The local pub (1 mile up the road, the bluebell) was very nice and had a good sized play area on a fair bit of land for the kids and really nice food (which made a change from bbq burgers we cooked!).
Very close to tissingtion trail so great for the keen ramblers and for bikers alike. Great base for sight seeing.
Ashbourne town a short drive away nice and pretty.
The not so good points.
Knowing your booking onto a pretty basic site it shouldn't mean old tired toilet blocks and even older push the button style public washroom showers. No sooner had you took your hand off the water stopped, so had to either do one handed or shiver in-between!
(this was in the swimming pool facilities and in the mens block, the womens appeared to be non push style but didn't get chance to find out in the main block because.)
Sadly while we were there for the 3 nights the boiler broke on the second night in the main block thus no hot water or showers so leaving 1 working shower for each sex for the whole camp site.
The toilets on whole appeared clean but the higher window ledges were gross. The fly net full with dead insects and the ledge not wiped down.
The wash pots facility attached to the main block is actually outside, so very little shelter other than the overhang, the tap was push the button style again and each time I used it the water was barely luke warm. There was another two sinks attached to the reception block, this was a lot better, at least in-doors and hotter water.
As our tent is on the larger side (7.7x8.25) it exceeded their pitch size of 7x7 for hook up facilities so had to pitch in the centre on the top field which then left us open to the elements during the storm! Frustrating really when the site wasn't full over the duration of our stay, and seeing tents pitching up yes smaller than ours but then proceed to erect a wind breaker surround thus actually becoming bigger than our tent!
The Friday evening brought some un-desirable groups who pitch together and think its great to play their radio and stay up till 2 in the morning. When reporting this to reception they did take it seriously and was dealt with but apparently the warden was 'off site' that night.
The price is quite steep considering all the above.

We stayed here for a trial run in a new tent, and found it very well equipped. We were in the back field, which was very spacious with plenty of room between pitches, and very quiet at night. The toilet blocks were cleaned regularly, and had no queues (we used the one furthest from the centre - plenty of toilets and showers). There were also pitches near the play area, however these looked much more crowded and I wouldn't like to have been located there.
The site has a well equipped shop and several washing areas - one with a freezer for refreezing ice blocks at no extra charge. The children's play area is very nice, safe, and with a good age range. The pool was clean and warm, and due to the number restriction not too crowded. The staff were all very friendly and approachable.
As we were just there a couple of days for a trial run we didn't venture off site, and due to the facilities found it perfect to entertain the children on site.

Plus points: a lovely children's play area, nice size and modern play equipment, plenty of space for children to play with a picnic area at one end. Well equipped shop, take-away serving breakfast etc, swimming pool (we never used it - extra charges apply) and rally room. Fairly flat pitches, not too far from Ashbourne and right on the Tissington Trail. Clean site.
Negative points: how expensive! We paid £27 for a family of 4, tent with electric hook up, per night. We have never been to such an expensive site, but after a weekend in Derbyshire, came to the conclusion that this area in general is more expensive than most in the north. It is a big site, very spread out. In our area there was a toilet block of two toilets and one shower (in the ladies) for 30 pitches, of which at least 23 could be for tents. By Saturday evening the smell coming from the gents was not nice!
There is another toilet block further afield with four showers and ten toilets but this was at least a 5 min walk. We booked our pitch in April but instead of paying a deposit then, had to pay in full.
If we go back to Derbyshire again we will not be using this site - too expensive.
