I've been camping for 40 years, have a young family (5 & 1 year old), and this is the best campsite I've visited if you have a young family.

There are excellent facilities (shop, cafe, swimming pool) - but the spacious, well laid out playground made the difference - I hardly saw my 5 year-old, he just went off making new friends. Sadly I had to push my one year-old on a swing most of the time. Still, in 4 years.

It's right next to the Tissington train, so excellent for bikers (like us lot) and walkers. My 1 year-old (OK, nearly 2 now) walked to Tissington (1 1/2 miles) where we had a lovely tea & cakes on the green. There's a great pub, the Bluebell Inn, just up the road too. There are footpaths to Dovedale - we'll try that next year.

I'm smitten enough to have booked for the August Bank Holiday week - and I'll be back most years.

If you want a quiet, child-free campsite, I suggest you try elsewhere (though there is a chld-free area).

It was hard to fault, clean, tidy, well maintained, friendly staff, free showers (non of that £1 for seemingly 2 minutes palaver). Possibly the only down side was that if you're near the playground, the 'closed at 9:30pm' rule is ignored by everyone, so expect noisy children till it's dark in the summer months.

See you there?

We stayed at the campsite over the beautiful weekend at the end of the school hols. We were made to feel very welcome and felt that the owners were running a very tight ship, lots of notices about expectations etc. To be honest we really didn't mind that at all and were taken to a field and given a choice of pitches. We did find that there was a hole under our tent and this was solved with no problem at all by one of the gentlemen at the site. In fact my son loved the bunnies and we fed them crumbs early in the morning! The facilities are well maintained but only a few showers and only one socket in the showers for your hairdryer. Swimming pool great didn't mind paying to swim although we thought it could have been cheaper. The playground is lovely and had a large grass area for ball games. We did really enjoy our stay! Will return and have recommended it to friends!

Just returned from a 2 night stay, after calling through in advance were told to just turn up, although when we arrived we were told they were full. This was eventually sorted and we were shown a choice of 5 or so pitches we could pick from all in the lower field which had been set aside due to being waterlogged earlier in the week.

Lower field is on a slight incline and it appeared all pitches had EHU facilities. Toilet block for lower field just adequate, 2 WC's 2 urinals (blokes) 1 Shower (push button 30 second annoying type)Lower field also right next to Childrens play area which has nice tidy play equipment for all ages. Shop, swimming pool(bookable sessions @ £2AD and &1CH take away cafe on site.

Excellent position right on Tissington Trail and only around a mile to Tissington and 3 miles to Ashbourne.

Overall great location, campsite itself tad pricey, you would expect better for your cash.

Stayed for 2 nights in March. Excellent site with good facilities. The camping field was quite big and we counted 5 other tents all weekend which was great. Toilets and showers very clean and warm with heaters (appreciated in March!)

We walked into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail (approx 3 miles) flat easy going walking. After spending the day in Ashbourne we decided to get the bus back to the campsite (bus driver will stop right outside the site if you ask). Be warned though, the buses are very infrequent at weekends, I think the one we got was the 3.30pm one and the next one was 7.05pm!

We ate in the pub down the road (Coach and Horses), had a very nice meal, not cheap, but lovely restaurant. Worth booking though as it gets busy at weekends.

All in all, a very pleasant stay. Would stay here again.

We booked this site as we wanted to use the swimming pool every day - however when we got there the pool was shut 'for maintenance' and did not open once during our 3 night stay. We consider the £21 per night for 2 adults and a small caravan to be very expensive especially as the facilities are very poor. We were happy to pay it to be able to swim but then discovered there was an extra charge for this as well!
Don't think of bringing a small dog this is an extra £3 per night. There are 2 toilet blocks the one near to the tents only has one shower which was broken. The other block had 4 showers. The ladies were not clean at all, mud that was there at lunchtime was still there in the evening, also the floor was very dangerously slippy.
The site gets very muddy, our friends children call it the chocolate fields site! We got stuck but did manage to get out luckily. The site seems to be getting more into luxury lodges and statics so don't expect any improvements to the camping facilities. It appears under the Hoseasons website now. We will not be visiting this site again.

We stayed here for the Easter bank holiday and we were sited in the bottom of one of the fields and although it rained whilst we were there it didn't get too muddy but did need some blocks to place under rear steadies as was on a slope.
The site is situated right on the Tissington trail which was excellent and the site provided an Easter egg hunt, bouncy castle, clown and face painting all free of charge.

All in all a great site for walking and cycling and a super park for the children. We will be back soon.

We visited over easter and had a great time, despite the rain! The staff were really helpful, showing us to the pitch, finding us blocks to stand the legs of our trailer tent on in the wet ground and they always said hello and were around if you needed anything.
On the sunday there were free events on site-bouncy castle, face painting and childrens entertainment, it was a great day.
The site was very clean and had a lovely park and green for football etc. and was right by tissington trail for walks, bike riding etc. We will definitely be going back-one of the best sites we have stayed in in 15 years.

The site's facility are very good.

Toilet and shower block are heated and clean. Washing up area has 2 sinks.

The playground is in good condition and seems quite safe.

The breakfast barms from the take away shop is very excellent.

The shop is well stocked and prices not too bad.

The Blue Bell pub is good place to eat, very friendly. The food is excellent.

Definitely use this site again next time we visit the area.

Large site with excellent facilities. Large childrens play area, indoor swimming pool, large shop, laundry and freezer facilities. Several shower blocks, each with several showers, washing cubicles and toilets; no queues for showers. Quiet site with loads of space in the gently sloping camping field. We were free to choose where we pitched the tent which allowed 3 families to pitched their large tents in a circle so the adults could sit around the bbq in the evening!

3 minute drive into Ashbourne, plenty of shops, pubs, restaurants. Tissington trail accessible from the site.

Would happily revisit the site.

We stayed at this site for 10 days ending in the August bank holiday and so saw it both quiet-due to appalling weather- and busy over the bank holiday.

We really liked it here.

The area is brilliant and full of things to do both near and a little further away: Alton Towers, Alton Towers water park, Tissington Trail, Thors cave, Heights of Abraham, Trentham monkey park and adventure playground, Churnet valley railway, Carsington and Tittesworth reservoirs, Dovedale, Manifold valley and loads of lovely villages to drink tea and eat cake in!

Ashbourne heights itself was a great base just off the A515 and right on the Tissington trail. Views all around of the hilltops were lovely. The toilet blocks were clean and well stocked. They were cleaned several times a day even when it was pouring with rain and got muddy straight away again.

The staff were very visible on sight during the day and always asked us how we were getting on when we saw them around.

The playground was central and well kept with wooden equipment.

The shop was ok for basics and emergencies but there's a Somerfield and Coop in Ashbourne for a main shop.

The pubs nearby are the Bluebell, Bentley Brook Inn and the wonderfully cosy Coach and Horses where we were very welcome and ate well.

Over the bank holiday there were lots of groups and even though the park was busy the atmosphere was very relaxed and people seemed to have a great time even though the weather was ropey.

In reference to the last review, there are a lot of rules and the notices about these rules are mostly written in a bit of a way that makes you feel a bit guilty despite you not having done anything; but if you just read them and accept that they probably are necessary even if they could have been worded a bit differently, then I think they were all totally justified.

During busy periods there were lots of groups of families who were laughing and chatting reasonably until fairly late (gone 11), and as far as I know even the group of dads alone airing their woes until about 3am weren't asked to be quiet!
