Just back from spending Spring Bank Holiday at Cae Du. Absolutely beautiful site. Sitting by the camp fire watching the sunset was a glorious, glorious treat. The site was busy, as to be expected on May Bank Holiday but it didn't feel cramped or overcrowded, there was still a decent amount of space between pitches.

The owner was friendly and welcoming, charged us £15 per night, and helpfully warned me to wash my hair first in the shower in case of time running out, though in the event it turned out the showers worked well and warm for the full 6 minutes £1 bought you.

Facilities were beautiful and clean - 3 or 4 times when I popped down to the amenities block over the weekend someone was in cleaning, so they never got the chance to become muddy or untidy and there was always a full complement of soap and loo roll etc. Beautiful place to stay, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Perfectly placed for walking - we did Cadair Idris (stunning) and a chunk of the coast path over the weekend, though you could cheerfully amuse yourself mucking round on boulders on the beach if you didn't fancy going far.

The Peniarth Arms in Brycrug does cracking food, too, if you can drag yourself away from the view.

The campsite was very quiet when we spent a few nights there. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

Camp fires are encouraged and wood available from the owner. We had a wonderful time partially because the weather was good but also because of the wonderful situation.

The showers were fine and I think, considering the beautiful location, the charges are reasonable. The showers are good, not ultra modern, but lots of hot water.

Only two moans: No hook-ups and no pub within walking distance, otherwise great.

As many people have commented, the best thing about this site is the location. On any day the view is stunning, whether the sea is rough or calm and blue. You can see across the bay to Pwllheli, Criccieth and Abersoch (take binoculars).

The relaxed atmosphere/lack of rules can have its drawbacks; as there are no pitching rules it can get crowded. You can wake up in the morning to find you cannot get your car out. People will put their tents really close to you. We saw a group of campers put their tent right in front of someone else's, resulting in blocking the view from their fire.

We spoke to the original campers, they could not believe anyone could be so oblivious/uncaring about the loss of sea view they had inflicted upon their neighbours. The strange thing was that the site was not that crowded, there were plenty of other places to pitch

We were made aware of a theft of a large amount of firewood from one camper. They were very unhappy; they felt that people were able to do anything they liked without any consequences.

I think the charge for the showers is money-grabbing; most sites that charge in the region of £20 per night offer free showers. Speaking of the site fees, £20 is on the high side considering the lack of electrical hookup and basic facilities.

I would go again but would try to go during the week when it is far less busy.

I fell in love with the site the moment we arrived, and the location has to be the most stunning I have ever camped at.

If you like a wild camping feel, then this site is perfect. The grass is uncut, there are no set pitches and there are very few rules.

Campfire are allowed and encouraged with big pre-erected fire pits dotted around the site. Raised BBQs are also allowed, as are dogs.

On our first visit it was mainly small groups and couples, the following weekend it was full of families with little ones which was lovely to see.

There is no camp shop (though I think you can buy eggs and a few basic supplies from the farmhouse), but the washing facilities and camp kitchen were great, clean and housed in a pretty stone building. A small gripe would be the shower wasn't very warm and was a trickle rather than a flow, but with such stunning scenery a naff shower was a small price to pay!

Do be aware that the site is very exposed as it is literally right on the cliffs edge. This means It can be quite windy, so make sure you bring something warm for the evenings.

I loved the bundles of fire wood that got delivered straight to our tent each evening by the farmer who owns the site and at £5, a bundle was enough to keep the campfire burning all evening.

The site is quiet and both times we have visited, the other campers have been very friendly. It's a very relaxing place and ideal for a true back to nature experience. On our first visit there in June 2014 we were delighted to spot bottle nose dolphins, and I even got some pictures.

Cae Du has very quickly become my favourite campsite and we are going back for our third visit of the summer in a couple of weeks time.

I'm scoring the site down slightly for child friendliness due to the steep cliff side location - whilst there is a wall, it is only small, and I think if I had a little one, I'd want to locate my tent well away from this area.

Myself and partner have just stayed for a week at this amazing campsite, we couldn't have asked for a better stay, the views are magnificent seeing wild Dolphins in the sea a couple of times, the facilities are basic, but the shower is better the one I have at home! instantly hot and a power shower, although they cost a pound per shower, you get ample time to do what you need. Excellent washing up facilities, where the owner has left a book with all the local walks/directions etc, very helpful. This site is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the spectacular views and beach, we will be definitely staying here again. The owners are very friendly and helpful and will bring you wood for your campfire on a daily basis, this costs £5. 00 per bundle, but well worth it. Thank you to the owners for another wonderful stay in Wales. Until next year x

I picked this site due to the reviews about its brilliant location. With two young children we always like to go somewhere near the sea if possible as they love the coast.

I could not be more delighted with the site, I rang and booked a pitch and spoke to the owner who did warn me they were busy (which most campsites are at bank holiday ) and to call at the farmhouse before entering the site.

Upon arrival we paid and were told that we could pitch anywhere we liked. He was very helpful and told us were would be most suitable as having two young children.

There are 2 main fields and a small area at front of toilet block in which you can pitch. We pitched in the field on the right and had lovely views and had nobody on top of us. Being able to have a campfire outside our tent was a major plus and my hubby and kids loved it, we sat outside and watched the sun go down. The owner or his son comes around at tea time and sells the wood for £5 a bundle, we missed them one evening but went to the farmhouse and put them in back of car.

As we visited this site over the bank holiday weekend, I was very worried that the facilities would cope with the number of people camping. In the ladies toilets there were 3 showers which were £1 for around 4 mins but these apart from once where red hot so I didn't mind paying. 3 toilets and 3 sinks. The hair dryer was 20 p and seemed to last forever. I only had to queue once for the shower and that was on the Monday morning. These were clean and were never out of toilet paper. The sinks had hand wash and it the dyson hand dryer was a nice touch.

In the gents (apparently ) there were 2 toilets, 2 showers and urinals with 3 sinks.

There is a utility room with 2 sinks - piping hot water. 2 freezers in which to freeze stuff or freezer cool blocks. It had a washer and tumble dryer in it. Which was around £2 for a wash load. There was a book in there suggesting walks and the usual leaflets. The bonus to this area was the fantastic views out to sea. Behind this is an open barn area with a open fire and two settee with a picnic table it's a bit rough but as the weather was lovely we didn't use it but I'm sure if it had been raining for a while its somewhere else to go. There is no club, bar or children's play area on this site.

The major plus for us was the direct access to the beach, whilst it is not sandy it's excellent for rock pooling and we spent many a happy hour catching some small crab, shrimp etc.

You must note that to get these lovely views you do have a drive to anywhere, but its all about the location, location, location!

The fields down to the toilet facilities can be quite steep in places and in some places on cliff edge so just be aware if have young children, was not a problem for us.

Cannot wait to go again!

This place is Amazing. Just being on a cliff face overlooking the sea.

Everytime I went passed on the train going to Barmouth, I allways wondered how to get on this site, and accidentally made a wrong turn when I attempted to cycle to Barmouth, and found it !

Excellent site, well recommended.

Views are well worth any effort to get there!

I will be going back there, no other camp compares.

Eventually I'm sure they could do with more showers and toilets when its busy, but wasn't put off with anything there.

Many thanks to the owners of the site.

My partner and I stayed in this campsite at the beginning of August 2012. With the threat of rain looming all weekend we have to admit this stay was slightly reluctant. However, once we arrived at the campsite we took all of this back.

We were greeted with phenomenal views of the Lleyn Peninsula in the distance. Unfortunately we didn’t outright see any dolphins / seals (although possibly did see a cheeky seal bobbing his head about in the water briefly) but did see a stoat scrambling up the rocky beach. Well more like sprinting!

The road down to the farmhouse is a bit rocky / steep so if you’re a sports car owner or have a caravan in tow you may find it slightly unnerving! We were greeted on arrival by a friendly pet lamb closely followed by ‘Mrs Cae Du’ who directed us towards a pile of wood for burning (£5 a bundle) and also sold us some rather delicious lamb burgers (£1 each), unfortunately the hens were a bit temperamental that day and no fresh eggs were on sale.

Once you go under a small bridge the campsite itself splits off into three paths – we took the right path up towards a large field, the middle path took you to a smaller pitch right near the path down to the rocky beach (and near the shower/toilet block) and the left path took you up to another large field overlooking the sea.

There are hand built stone fire-pits every 5 meters or so and these face right off into the sea so you can watch the tide roll in while you’re warming up or having a BBQ. Luckily the campsite wasn’t very busy (either due to the Olympics or the terrible weather forecasts) but if it was you’d probably be camped rather close to neighbouring tents.

Facilities wise the toilet / shower blocks were pristine, £1 for a shower was a little steep but they are very hot (don’t turn the thermostat up or you WILL burn!) and surprisingly there was a hairdryer for 20p which lasted a short while. The toilets were fully stocked with hand soap and tissue.

There is also a small kitchen / washroom equipped with a washing machine and tumble drier (think these were £1 for 30 mins but we didn’t use either) as well as a sink for washing up and two fridge freezers for freezing your cooler packs. There are also some second hand books to buy for a small donation to the Air Ambulance Service and a plethora of leaflets for local attractions.

Around the corner from the kitchen there was a ‘rainy day’ room with a tatty sofa, picnic table and dart board. It was lit with a strip light so you could use it in the evening but we didn’t really bother – it could benefit from a spruce up shall we say but for £15 a night for the two of us we couldn’t really complain!

In short this is an actual gem of a site. I can imagine it to be rather cramped at busy times but choose your dates wisely and you’ll be in for one of the most relaxing stays you’ll have in a while.

Although the site wasn’t particularly busy during our stay we didn’t hear any noise and the sea acts as a buffer so it does feel relatively private even though you are only shielded by a bit of canvas!

I wouldn’t recommend this place for large rowdy groups of people although for families, couples and small groups of friends it’s absolutely brilliant.

It’s miles away from anywhere else (about a 3 mile walk to the nearest town on small windy roads) so you do truly feel like you’re getting back to basics. We’re already planning our next trip!

Well we finally made it, been meaning to get to this campsite for a while now and spent a night at the weekend there with our young family.

I think it was (surprisingly) a little quieter than we'd been led to expect but then the weather's been grim recently and most schools haven't yet broken up. Not complaining though - there was plenty of space to pitch-up and as a result and we pitched on a small near-level terrace up near the railway line along with a friend and their tent. While near the line, the noise wasn't really noticeable though and the excited waves from passengers while we were supping a beer next to our campfire was actually quite amusing.

The evening view from the terrace was lovely though looking out over the shimmering bay. I know it's been mentioned before but falling to sleep lulled by the gentle waves below was great too and really added to the experience.

The owners seemed upbeat and there were signs about offering-up wood for fires and fresh lamb-burgers if needed too. It was £20 per night for two adults and two children in the one tent - which for a couple of nights is fine but I guess it could mount up over a week or more. Maybe they might consider a slightly discounted 'week' (5 or 6 day) fee too?

The toilet block seemed clean and well looked after, from mem the gents had two showers which were pay as you go. They were pretty central and there were water taps sited at convenient points about the site too. You'll need to pick your way down the rough/rutted access road carefully though - especially if your vehicle is a little laden-down.

Overall a lovely site, not for people who want all mod cons or (I'd guess) who have 30ft-long motor homes though. If you don't mind the slightly more utilitarian facilities then the views and location make this a really special site.

Very pleased to find Cae Du still ploughing its own furrow. The 'Cool Camping' effect seems more evident judging by the clientèle. Happy to experience some genuine camping camaraderie from a bunch of scaffolders who helped us put up our awning - first time, in a gale, not recommended!

Slightly soured by a small group who plonked their van and tents right in front of us. So instead of seeing dolphins in the morning, we had to make do with our unwanted neighbour's clapped-out Volvo.

This is a unique place, but I was a bit taken aback by the fees - £21/night for van, 2 adults, 2 children and dog - when we paid only a pound more on a 4 star site in Derbyshire with free showers and EHU the same week.

The facilities here were struggling to cope with a site that was busy in spite of the poor weather.
