Have just come back today from this site, I have to say highly recommended. The farmer and his wife are lovely people, the site is perfect. We came from Barmouth way towards the site and the roads are very narrow if you are towing a touring unit, to get onto the site it is extremely tight fit between his farm building and house but other than that it's not too bad.

Dogs are free, the farmer is quite happy to accept them as long as you clean up after them and keep them on leads at all times. We took our 3 children and they were more than happy. There is no electric hook up and for a tourer it's £15 a night without an awning and £20 per night with an awning. I would recommend anybody going with a caravan, upon entering the site (through the railway tunnel) head towards the left as if you go to the right you might get stuck on the make shift bridge! The toilets are excellent and exceptionally clean (the farmers wife was cleaning them at half past 11 at night!).

There is an extremely large Co-Op in Tywyn but no supermarkets or large shops other than that.

Before we even unhooked the caravan the kids had spotted the dolphins and then the train went past, they were that excited at both they didn't know where to look first.

I am certainly looking forward to my next visit which hopefully will be in a couple of weeks when I will be taking my parents (who are both in their 70's) in their tent!

Facilities excellent but basic - always clean.

On working farm - owners very friendly.

Magical location on shoreline. Number 28 bus passes each hour and can be flagged down near site entrance despite absence of bus stop.

As we sat by our campfire and the moon set we were treated to the amazing sound of Manx Shearwaters calling eerily as they returned to the brooding burrows on the clifftop. Special.

Our kids have been raving about this site for years, so when invited to join them, with a hot weekend forecast, granny and grandpa jumped at it - first time in a tent for 50 years. Now we can see what all the fuss is about.

Pitches strung out along a low, grassy cliff (easy scrambles down to the beach) giving what must be the finest view possible of the majestic sweep of Cardigan Bay - a 180 degree panorama on which I demonstrated to granddaughter Molly that by sighting the horizon against a straight line (a paperback will do) you can actually see the curvature of the earth.

Better still, at night you see the twinkling lights of the Lleyn Peninsula across the bay, along with the line of small bonfires on the site itself, where each pitch has a crude dry-stone fire-pit which you can adapt to your cooking needs, or just warm yourself by. Logs available from the farm.

The beach, a lovely long walk, is mostly stony but with some sand, and rock-pools where we watched a man walking his ferret. Or was it a polecat? Good job our border terrier was chained up (yes, they allow dogs)

The coastal Arriva trains glide by at the back of the site almost silently (they are fitted with special baffles to avoid disturbing campers, apparently). I said to Molly 'On a wet day we could catch one of those trains'. She replied 'You will need a strong net, Grandpa.'

This is NOT a site for clubbers. You can hear a pin drop from dusk onwards as the sun sunks into the middle of this panorama. We found ourselves talking in hushed voices to avoid disturbing the peace! Best sunset I have seen since the far east.

At the risk of sounding churlish after such a lovely stay, the men's loos could do with a modest expansion. Two cubicles is not enough for 60+ pitches, and I found myself queueing at 6.30am. The girls tell me their half of the ablutions block was fine.

Strongly recommended for those prepared to sit and admire the scenery. And much to see nearby.

We chose this campsite as it was one of a few where you were allowed a campfire. On arrival, the owners were very friendly and offered us a bundle of fire wood for £5. It's best to take some with you if you can as there is plenty of driftwood on the beach but it is a good trek to get the decent bits.

You have to go under a train track and the tunnel is quite narrow but the site and the views are well worth it. Hardly noticed the train passing 2-3 times a day. The facilities are clean although I'm not sure the shower lasted the full 5 minutes for £1 - take £2 in case!

The pitches are spacious and face the sea, a great view of the sunset and the sheep are a nice change to an alarm clock! The site is quite windy though so take windbreaks and be prepared to smell of fire smoke for your stay.

We went on bank holiday Monday after everyone had left and it was so peaceful and quiet, such a relaxing time. On the last morning we saw dolphins off the coast which was a lovely suprise.

The nearest town is 3 miles away and no pubs that I managed to find so take everything with you.

All in all, I loved the peacefulness of this site and will definitely be going again.

We 'packed and went' to this campsite after being grounded by the Icelandic volcanic ash clouds. Appreciating an authentic camping experience we were drawn to this site by the fact that you can have camp fires. We were greeted on arrival by the owner who was very helpful and armed with loads of local information, firewood, and the most mindblowing homemade lamb&mint burgers (only 60p each too!). The site was uncramped and we were delighted to find you can camp literally on the cliff edge for front row seats of the sunset. For £6 each! The beach made interesting exploring, and apparently this area is very popular with climbers. The site is very quiet; even the local 2-carriage train which rush through every couple of hours seemed to have a silencer on it!

Only being there overnight, we didn't use the showers, but the toilet and washing facilities were more than adequate and very clean. There is even a 20p-a-go hairdryer.

The place was peppered with young lambs when we went, who share the two fields with the campers, causing great entertainment as the sheep and lambs are much more tame than usual. Though unless you enjoy being woken by the loud bleats of grown sheep at 6.30am.Take some earplugs!

We managed to find a good flat spot to camp and if it were not for us underestimating the April night temperatures, I'm sure we would have had a comfy nights sleep.

In all, we definitely recommend Cae Du for location, friendliness, facilities and intimate size. :)

We have visited this site three twice and each time have been blown away by the staggering location. Great facilities and the ability to have a camp-fire whilst watching the dolphins swim by and the sunset over the Llyn peninsula is a real treat!

Great facilities and while it has always been busy when we've visited it never feels noisy or overcrowded.

No pub within walking distance but great local farmers markets and we've never felt the need to stray far from the site.

Cadair Idris and many other great welsh mountains in easy reach and some great biking too.

Really good value for money!

WOW! What a place. The thought of camping on a cliff edge did worry me slightly at first, having the kids and dog, but we are so glad we went to this camp site. Didn't want to come home.

The toilet/shower block was spotless around the clock. £1 for a shower and it lasted ages, 2 adults and 3 kids had a shower using only £1. There is also a barn area with a few sofas in that you could use. A washing up room which had a washing machine £1 a go, a tumble dryer 50p for 30 mins and a freezer (for your ice blocks)

We took all our food with us so it didn't bother us that there wasn't a shop on site. We did buy some lamb burgers from the owner and I have to say they were AMAZING!

We built a small camp fire by our tent and the kids toasted marshmallows on it. The memories of this will last for ever.

The beach was lovely my kids and dog LOVED it, looking for crabs, catching fish and building sand castles.

I can not find one negative thing about this place all I will say is make sure your tent is WELL pegged as night times can get VERY wet and windy (scary at times)even if the sun as been blazing all day.

We didn't leave the site (only to come home) so cannot comment on the surrounding area.

We will definitely go back (The sooner the better)

Why, when there is a good commercial site in Tywyn and a quite adequate but unlisted one in Fairbourne, turn off the main coast road between them on a sharp right-hand bend, go down a steep lane then a steep partly surfaced track to a site where every pitch is exposed to the worst weather the Irish Sea can muster up? Because I'd read so many positive reviews of this site and wanted to see if they were true. They are! The shower/toilet block is in a stone building (in keeping with traditional local architecture) which also houses a kitchen area with washing machine and two dishwashing sinks and magazines and tourist information. Part of the same building also provdes a shelter/lounge area. The welcoming site owners made sure that the facilities were always clean and adequately supplied with hot water, soap (unusual in my experience of campsites) and even nail brushes (unheard of!), and also spent a lot of time clearing up after some of their less considerate guests. We pitched in the lower area of the campsite about ten yards from the high water mark and, yes, we did suffer at least two broken pole sections and tears in the outer tent, nonetheless we found the site quite captivating. The beach is mainly boulders of varying sizes (with small patches of sand) some of which have been used to build fire-places (wood fires are permitted), and to help hold our tent - and no doubt many others - in place! The Cambrian Coast railway passes the site, carrying from late July to late August (Monday to Friday) a daily steam train 'The Cambrian' from Machynlleth to Porthmadog, as well as the regular Arriva diesel service. Attractive towns in the area include already mentioned Fairbourne (narrow gauge line connecting with the Barmouth ferry) and Twywn (Talyllyn Railway with a section of its museum containing a reconstruction of the study of one Rev. Awdry of Thomas fame). I would STRONGLY ADVISE intending visitors to approach this site from the South and turn left into the access road, or if coming from the Fairbourne direction to carry on past the site and find a safe place to turn round. I'd also advise - on a less serious note - any aspiring site owners/operators/wardens wishing to go on a 'Course' to put this site on their itinerary to learn how it should be done!

After reading all the wonderful reviews about this site we decided to book and have 2 nights over the bank holiday.

The shower block was ok, not too bad but only 3 showers in the ladies and one did not work. It was pretty muddy when you walked into the shower cubicle where you get undressed. I would suggest go in flip flops and keep them on. The showers were only a trickle and pretty cold.

When we arrived we were told no logs left for sale so we asked a kindly fellow camper who had plenty. However, we realised that it was just too windy to have a fire. The weather was pretty awful and the wind was bad on the clifftop. You can hear the sea at night which was nice but after listening to it for hours was annoying.

The site says 15 pitches but there were at least 60, its lovely on the clifftop and the sunset was fantastic. But I was worried having 2 young children close to the clifftop.

Its at least 40 minutes to Barmouth which was just too far for us.The farm road to the site was really narrow and goes under a bridge at one point, touring caravans would struggle.

All in all it was ok for 2 nights but no longer.

Spent just the one night here, shame really but we`re already planning a return visit for longer!

It`s a fabulous place, totally unspoilt , we were able to camp just back from the cliff edge looking out to sea.Looked quite full but having only 15 pitches (although there looked to be a few more?) that felt perfect. And having just come from Shell Island (which I hold in high regard too)it felt very quiet.

The owner very kindly pointed us to a plug socket in the barn when we asked her about the possibility of charging my phone.

Showers were great, was a bit dubious about how long the £1 would last but it was more than generous and very hot!I`d suggest evenings for the best temperature having overheard someone else saying it wasn`t that warm the following morning .There were 2 sinks to wash up in, in a small kitchen area which also included a washing machine(£2 for a hot wash) and freezer. Be sure to make sure the freezer is shut properly though!

Lamb burgers and eggs were available to buy but firewood had ran out and we were too lazy to go gathering.Having read other reviews it`s a definite must do for next time!

Overall a wonderful atmosphere for families and couples (like us) alike. Everyone was very friendly and open , kids especially and it was a delight to see them flinging themselves about the place with wild abandon!

Highly recommended!
