Stayed here for five days over BH weekend, and it rates as ones of the best sites we have ever stayed at.

Facilities are basic but perfectly adequate and the owners work hard to keep them clean. Two toilets and two showers in the gents, and three showers and two toilets in the ladies. Never experienced any major queues, although we did tend to shower later in the morning! Tip for the mens showers; use the one at the far right rather than nearest the door - your £1 goes a lot further and you will give up before it runs out!

Arriving before the BH rush (although it never really got that busy), we were able to select a nice flat spot for our 4 person tent right on the cliff tops at the far southern end of the site. It was slightly windier up there, a 5 minute walk to the facilities and those with small kids would need to be mindful due to the cliff edge. However, it was lovely and peaceful and everyone there appeared to be discerning campers, respectful of making excessive noise.

We were lucky enough to avoid rain, and had two particularly blazing days, which allowed us to enjoy stunning sunsets out over the sea accompanied by roaring camp fires.

After one windy night and a pretty windy day, a few people packed up and disappeared and a pile of discarded tents gave a clue why; you must be prepared for windy conditions and so make sure you have a decent tent and the guy ropes are properly pegged out! A £10 Tesco job will some come unstuck (literally!). A good windbreak is also a must.

The only other issue is the distance of the nearest shop for milk and bread - you really have to use the car to pop out for these, unless one of you has a bike. The other option is walking along the road, which is narrow and quite fast. If they sold milk and bread on site, it would be great. As it is, they do sell eggs, lamb burgers (but fell apart when BBQd), kindling and wood for fires.

Proprietors are very friendly and they even lent us a gas bottle for the first night, as we forgot ours!

Great access to the rocky beach from the site, and a brief walk North (when the tide is out) will find you a sandy spot. You can walk South as well along the cliff tops from the site, although it is very overgrown and eventually the cliff ends and you have to scramble up besides the railway line and then scramble down a very steep path to the beach - not really recommended, especially for kids or older people.

We will be back!

Site was excellent, everything the previous reviewers covered. Facilities where clean and well stocked, showers where a £1 but occasionally people had left them with credit (bonus). Communal barn with fire place is a lovely relaxing place - we took a bottle of wine, another chap had brought his guitar and very kindly played and let the children have a turn, all very informal.

View spectacular, must have took at least 20 photos of the sunset, steam train twice a day a highlight, campfire brilliant - cooked jacket spuds and baked bananas on ours. We saw seals and finally on the last day of our adventure we saw dolphins!

Locally, we shopped at Twynn which was fine, plenty there. We went on the steam train to Dolgoch falls which were fantastic, infact we wished we had set aside more time for this - you could spend the whole day wandering around. Other than that we were on a tight budget and spent most of the time knocking around the site, kids played in the stream as well as the beach. Excellent value at £25 per night for our large 12 berth tent as we were 2 families. If you like a quiet family site this is the place for you. Will definitely go again. NB site location only 9 out of 10 as car bottomed a few times on the track down and bridge over stream (note to self must get a trailer!)

Decided on this campsite after reading the reviews here and we weren't disappointed. The location is stunning, and there is no end to places to visit close to the campsite. Cadair Idris.A full day 6 hours.Take a packed lunch and enjoy the lake before the ridge walk, some free parking before the national park car park, Castell y Bere and Dolgoch waterfall another great day out, there's a free car park by the castle and it's just £1 for 2 hours or £2 all day at the waterfall. It's so beautiful you need 3 or 4 hours there. Bird rock is another great place. So much to do. Anyway back to the campsite. There were 60 plus tents when we arrived in mid august but it was so quiet. The views across cardigan bay are amazing.Bring or collect your own wood each day for the fire pit.And a wire grill to cook on.Stunning location.Great experience. Would highly recommend if peace and quiet, beautiful scenery and loads of stunning hill walking on your doorstep is your thing.

This site is fantastic. We parked our Delica van up on the cliff looking out to sea, short walk to loos, washing up bit etc. Also there is a room for chilling with an open fire and plug sockets! Great walks in either direction on beach, deserted beaches.

Bit hilly as a site but pebbles under our tyres sorted that out! Will definitely return to the site, owners very helpful offering info on walks etc.

If you like quiet camping with likeminded friendly campers, beautiful views and campfires this is thw site for you if you like busy sites with all the facilities it isn't. Enjoy!

This campsite is the best we have experienced.

Stunning sea views and a lovely beach full of rock pools. The facilities are basic but were always clean. (£1 for a shower) There is a washing machine (£2 for a wash cycle)and tumble dryer. (50p for 20 mins).

You can buy eggs, lamb mint burgers, fire logs and kindling from the farmhouse and apart from a small village shop, in Bryncrug, just up the road there is a Spar and a Co-op in Tywyn. If it is rainy you can take the kids to the indoor pool or to the small but very quaint cinema both in Tywyn.

For Sunnier days hit the beach or go to Fairbourne and catch the steam train to the headland where you can take a small boat ride across the estuary to Barmouth. Crabbing in Aberdovey is also a must as well as Dologoch Falls. Catch another steam train from Tywyn which stops at the bottom of the falls, then walk to the top for a picnic and to paddle you feet in the icy pools.

The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming.

We stayed here for 2 nights in early August. This was our first visit to Cae Du but we will be returning at the earliest opportunity.

It is a beautiful location with the opportunity for long walks on deserted beaches. The location isn't flat so you need to choose your pitch well, but the rolling landscape means there are no regimented pitches. You choose your spot.

You can pitch your tent on the edge of a small cliff above the beach and watch the sun go down over the sea. If you want you can build a camp fire but bring your own wood if you can because it can be hard to find dry wood to burn.

The facilities are good and clean. There is everything you need and the family are very helpful. If we had one suggestion for improvements we would recommend additional hooks or a small shelf in the shower cubicles so that you can keep your things dry.

Otherwise a lovely, peaceful site.

Had a lovely week here in June as well as a week in July. Loved it that much, we are going back again in August with family!

Absolutely beautiful place. If you are into the commercial sites then this isn't for you. Quiet, unspoilt, beautiful site.

You can choose to pitch up higher on the cliff side or down low at the seafront. Each pitch has a wonderful stone campfire. We took some bbq coals & cooked on it. Wonderful.

Nature at its best here. Saw dolphins, herons, oyster catchers, shags & cormorants. Didnt get to see the seals but they are there apparently.

Great clean site with a wonderful atmosphere. No rowdiness, everyone very friendly. There's a barn where everyone can gather at night around a huge fire.

Toilets & showers very clean. Always bumping into the farmers wife cleaning, very friendly always up for a chat.

Washing up area is great. Makes washing up quite pleasant as you are looking out to sea. There is use of a washing machine for a small fee. There are books/magazines you can borrow. There is also a small freezer where you can freeze up your ice packs.

Great coast to walk around. Very rocky/pebbly beach so make sure you have good walking shoes. If you walk to the right there is a beautiful area of sandy beach, never anyone on it.

Great position to camp as you are close to all the main areas, tywyn, aberdovey, fairbourne, barmouth.

I would absolutely recommend this site to anyone! Wonderful :-)

If I had to sum it up:

What a Campsite!,

The place is lovely the people are friendly you wake up in the morning and can see & hear the sea water below

You can have campfires by your tent there are ready made fire pits so you build up your fire and off you go.

The only criticism I have is the Steep turn and steep slope down to the campsite (it's really really steep) (thus the 9 out of 10 for the site location)

Also someone mentioned that the shower's don't last long enough (they cost £1) while we where there (me and my fiance) we put this to the test got into the shower had a wash did a bit of singing in the rain and in the end got fed up and turned the shower off. If your just washing yourself then the pound should be plenty enough

Be warned though: there are two Cae Du's There's another on that has a website (this one I don't think has their own website) the other cae du don't allow camp fires!

I used to love visiting this site, and did so many times a year for the last 10 or so!

Over the last couple of years the site has become too crowded, dirty and the showers are always cold which when you have to pay a pound each time is not acceptable!

The views are terrific, but when you have music blaring, dogs pooping, kids screaming and hitting your tent with balls and cars driving up and down the fields at all hours the view doesn't seem to matter.

I will only visit this site out of term time/bank holidays as it can be awful at other times. The site and the 'paying' visitors would benefit if they sorted out the hot water and crowding issues then it may regain the 'idyllic' site status it once had. I only gave a 4 as the overall rating because of the wonderful view!

I can only reinforce the positive aspects of the site that have been presented already. We were very fortunate with the weather and pitched and took down the tent in sunny conditions, with warm days and nights in between.

The atmosphere here is excellent - as should be the case with camping, people from very different backgrounds rubbed along very well.

The only inconvenience was that hot water seemed in short supply. We talked to some regulars who hadn't seen it so busy - both fields nearly full- so at peak times, this may be a regular occurrence.

Plenty of driftwood on the beaches between Tywyn and Aberdyffi, if you want to go on an expedition.

Cae Du exceeded our expectations and we shall be back.
