Have recently returned from 8 nights camping here. We arrived on bank holiday Friday, so for over the bank holiday weekend the site was quite busy - even so we managed to find a nice spot on the top field. The site gradually emptied out over the week and by the time we left the bottom camping field had about 2 tents left and ours at the top had about 3! The facilities were very good and clean - 30p for 10 minutes in the shower is quite a long time, the only problem being that apart from the last two days we (husband and two teenage sons) all had to queue in the morning to use them!
The site was pretty quiet even over bank holiday (considering the number of tents etc), but there were a group of people from some touring medieval company that made quite a bit of noise on some evenings. They were staying in the valley bit where the caravan hookup pitches were, and unfortunately the noise seemed to rise up to our top camping field.
The local area is very pretty - there are two lakes up over the top of the campsite, my sons and husband spent a great day fishing at the nearest one. It is so peaceful and tranquil - you hardly see anyone! Certainly lots of lovely walks nearby and you are within easy reach of the beach as well, although as the weather was bit on the cool side didn't really do the beach much. The campsite didn't have a shop - which meant the nearest place for shopping was over the toll bridge at a lovely little place which I won't attempt to spell! Good Spar, great butchers and deli and other shops including fish and chip shop and fishing/gun shop where you can get your fishing permits from! A must do is the Ffestiniog railway - great fun for kids of all ages!
As we try to visit a different area each time we camp, doubt if we will visit this site again even though we did have a good holiday here.

My wife and I have just returned from Wales having spent 5 nights at Barcdy and 5 nights further south. This was our first visit to Wales and chose this site for the description of the site and the proximity to lots of attractions. We found this to be a super site, the toilets and showers were always very clean and we were forever bumping into the cleaners. The tent pitches were very good, we were allowed to choose any pitch from 2 fields. One is a large and fairly level field at the bottom of the hill and the second was on top of the hill. We went for the very last pitch at the top of the hill with a commanding view over the rest of the campsite. No matter where you are the facilities are within easy reach. Showers were a very reasonable 30p for 10minutes, lots of hot water, payment is by means of tokens paid for at reception. We were pleased to find a ready supply of bricks to place disposable barbecues on. Our only complaint would have been that we were unable to locate the shop that is apparently there, we noticed the reception has a supply of camping gas but there was no bread or milk there. No matter we just went to the local Spar shop just across the toll bridge up the road, 40p I believe and this was valid all day, both ways. Just do not go to the local store in Talsarnau it is completely bare with empty shelves. Overall a very good site although sometimes not as quiet as we hoped, easily sorted with ear plugs, we would nonetheless return again if we were in the area. The local scenery is breathtaking and the local people so friendly.

I should start this review by saying that we are very, very fussy campers. Not in terms of wanting lots of facilities but in that we want to stay in well-run, clean and quiet sites in lovely locations.
What sums up Barcdy is the fact that the 'honesty box' (where you put your 30p for a shower token) isn't a box but a plate full of small change, completely unguarded and open to the elements. It must have a few quid in it but it can stay on display because the sort of people who stay at Barcdy aren't the sort of people who help themselves to handfuls of small change (or have kids who do that sort of thing).
There are three camping areas at Barcdy - a lower area next to the road (popular with families), a middle area (mostly for people who want hook-ups) and a top camping area (you need to walk down to the showers) which is favoured by families and couples and surrounded by woodland. It's also very sheltered. It's a lovely quiet place to sit in the evening; all you can hear is the sound of kids playing ball and exploring the forests and best of all, no loud music (I did hear some faint music but even that was classical . It is a very middle class campsite - you can tell by the number of Saabs, Volvos and Toyota Priuses). One family were a bit noisy at night (loud talking) but they were told to shut up each night at about 10:00 p.m. By other campers (and did) so that wasn't a problem.
Overall, a lovely clean campsite with a relaxed atmosphere, which feels more like a good French/Spanish campsite than a British one. For runners, and walkers, the woods behind the campsite stretch into open country, so there's plenty to explore without leaving the campsite by car. The facilities in the upper camping area, although good, are a bit limited when the campsite is busy (I had to queue for a shower) but that's not really a problem.
The only thing to be aware of is that the local pub (The Ship Aground), although serving a lovely pint, doesn't do food (it does sell wrapped rolls though) despite the claim in the Good Beer Guide that it does. There's also a sign outside the campsite advertising a shop open 7:00 am to late in the nearby village - but we found that it kept very limited opening hours. As a result, we had to shop at Tesco in Portmadoc, which we didn't really want to do (as we like to support local businesses) but didn't have any choice!

We stayed here for a fortnight in June 2007 and had a lovely quiet holiday in this lovely area. On arriving at the campsite we were disappointed that the camping area we were offered was so close to the main road. I was hoping for a more rural location. There is an alternative camping field (the upper field) which is further from the road and has lovely views but is unsuitable for anyone with young children due to steep drops behind the pitches. Also during the period that we stayed the upper toilet block was closed. Having pitched on the lower field we did find that the road did not cause a major problem as it was not particularly busy at night. The facilities block was well maintained and clean. There is a useful baby changing unit in the large shower-room in both male and female toilet blocks. Unfortunately, however, this was often occupied by people with no children (despite alternative showers being available), and we felt it would be more useful if these rooms could have been reserved for sole use as family rooms (ie. With a key arrangement or even just a notice requesting they are reserved for families). The showers required tokens for 30p, and these are obtained on an honesty box basis which is useful when they are required out of hours. The freezer block facility is also a self service arrangement. There was no shop available on site (even at weekends), despite the brochure stating it is open at busier times. We used nearby Tesco in Porthmadog regularly. Unfortunately, since there is no shop we had very limited contact with the site owners. It would have been nice to meet them to chat about the local area etc but the owners never seemed to venture into the camping area to check it out and meet their guests, apart from when performing maintenance. I felt at the end of our stay we could have been on the pitch for 2 weeks without staying and it wouldn't have been noticed! All in all a nice quiet well maintained site in a lovely area.

This was our first stay here and it certainly won't be our last. I cannot believe how clean the facilities are. I have never stayed on a camp site that is so clean, the showers and toilets were spotless at all times - even on a busy, wet bank holiday. The 20p charge for a shower was very reasonable given that the water is so hot and lasts for 10 minutes. My two children aged 8 and 6 had a great time playing at making dens in the woods behind the tent or on the small embankment in front of the tent. There are different areas to camp in we stayed in 'the knoll' and didn't hear any traffic from the road at all and by 9pm it was quiet (most children in bed and adults sat with mug of warm coffee-tea-chocolate etc). It was very cold in fact I have never been so cold for so long but this did not stop us having a great time - will just bring a hot water bottle next time if weather forecast not good! Everything just a short drive away and the scenery is breathtaking. The owners very friendly and obviously work very hard keeping the site so lovely and clean. It is ideal for a family we will certainly be going back.

Lovely site with modern & immaculately kept facilities (considering it was a rainy Spring Bank holiday the facilities were spotless). Enjoyed our stay here (part of a group of 15) & would recommend this site to campers wanting peace & quiet, flat pitches with decent clean facilities. No club or shop on site or indeed nearby. However Porthmadog is only a few miles down the road with beaches, supermarkets, take aways, banks etc - everything you could possibly require. Only draw back to some might be the fairly busy road that runs past the site. This did not disturb us in the slightest as pitches were set back enough for it not to be a problem. Also the camping fields do become very marshy when it rains.

We spent a long weekend at Barcdy, 3 young familes and 2 couples. The owner could only confirm she would open the site for us a couple of days before we went due to the terrible weather. Despite this, the site was immaculate when we arrived and we choose where to pitch up.The laundry and washing up facilities were great and the toilets and showers excellent, whatever time of day you used them, a fantastic achievement considering the weather we had,Trying to find somewhere to eat or takeaway locally on our first night wasn't easy but this was the only downside. We would strongly recommend the site to anyone looking for a clean, quiet site and will definitely be going back ourselves.

Second visit here. We were again impressed with the very high standards we found in 2004 even in wet weather conditions. The site was busy at the weekend when we arrived, but there was still plenty of room to choose a pitch on the upper field. The showers and wash up facilities were very good. The owners make themselves available at all times and are helpful when needed. Only (small gripe) was that the freezer for iceblocks was struggling to freeze properly! Plenty of attractions in the vicinity - good clean beaches at Harlech, Black Rock and Criccieth all within 30' drive and there are plenty of things to do when the weather is wet. We won't hesitate to recommend this site.

I have visited Barcdy many times over the years. Having read the reviews commenting on the cleanliness of the toilets and showers and the way in which the site is maintained - all of which I agree with. However no one has said that from the site you can walk up to a beautiful lake with fishing and then on up into the hills. From the site there are any number of short or long walks possible all of which are in quiet countryside away from traffic and people. Simply take a 25000 OS map on your next visit and take the path signed to the lakes for a great day out!
