We stayed here for a long weekend and found the site and village absolutely delightful. Our welcome was relaxed and friendly and was certainly not accompanied by a list of rules. In fact, we didn't notice any rules posted anywhere other than those you see in all campsites.
The site is immaculate and the staff constantly cleaning the facilities or tending to the grounds were always friendly. The facilities are amongst the best we have ever seen, including a playpen and baby bath which looked brand new.
The location is very pretty, surrounded by hills and it is a 2 minute walk into the village. I wouldn't bring children here as there is really nothing for them to do, either on the site or in the village itself.
The village is lovely although not a lot to do there. We ate at a lovely restaurant (can't remember the name but it's about the only one in the village) which had a great fish menu. The food in the Swan was average and in the other pub disgraceful- microwaved frozen food. I paid almost £9 for the broccoli and cheese 'special' which had one piece of broccoli in it.
Lots of really good walks and Porlock Hill is a real challenge!

We've just returned from a very enjoyable four-night stay here. Found the site and facilities absolutely spotless.
Paid £16. 50 per night for an electric hook-up, which we thought was reasonable. We had no problem with the rules - they are there to protect the majority from those who feel they can do just what they like - when you are in such close proximity to other people, it lets everyone know where they stand.
The site is a two minute walk from the centre of the village of Porlock, which has all the facilities you need, including a wide choice of pubs and restaurants.
Porlock Hill is west of the site, so if you are coming from the east (Minehead), there's no need to worry.
Finally, the warden is collecting plastic milk bottle tops for charity, so bring some with you!

Stayed for 7 nights, very much our sort of a site. Found the site to be very welcoming, great location + facilities immaculate, some of the best facilities we've used. Never found the facilities busy, always very clean + well kept.
Great area for walking on Exmoor, exploring the picturesque local countryside + the local pubs. The village centre is just a short stroll away, with a tourist information office, a couple of convenience stores, butchers (who sell amazing pasties), a cheese monger/deli, + other local shops, a really lovely village.
Porlock is on the bus route to + from Minehead, County Gate, Lynton + Lynmouth which give good opportunities for walking the SW coastal path + busing back. The walk to Minehead is one I'd particularly recommend. Porlock Weir is a mile + a half away + has a sea front pub, hotel, restaurant + chippy. Selworthy + Dunster are well worth a visit.
We had a very enjoyable break + will be returning many times to this site, a great site in a great location.

This is a lovely little Camp Site in an idyllic town. Nice pubs and shops with the sandy beaches of Minehead 5 miles down the road. As stated before the site is very clean and well maintained. There are a number of rules which has been touched upon already. But as my wife says. Would the site be as nice if the rules weren't there in the first place.
I wouldn't recommend this as a site for families with kids or dogs as it's a little restrictive on ball games and the dog walking area is small to say the least (considering the size of the empty field it is housed in).
My only real gripes were the mens showers were permanently cold (some excuse about the showers being further than the ladies) and the lovely nature reserve had a big padlock around the gate so you couldn't enjoy it.
Overall though, if you want a nice quiet, clean well maintained campsite, Porlock is the one for you.

What a gem! We have just returned from an 8 night stay at the site and it was great. The pitches were a good size, the facilities were spotless and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Having read previous reviews concerning the number of posters etc I say 'bring on the laminator' if it means guests take care of the facilities on offer!
The site is within an easy walk of the village, which has 2 well stocked convenience stores and a few pubs. The best pub was The Ship at Porlock Weir which is 1 1/2 miles from the site. Porlock is a great place to base yourselves for visiting Somerset and N Devon-we will definitely return again.

We were somewhat put off this site on arrival when we were presented by a long printed list of rules. The warden was very friendly and helpful, but he stood over us on arrival until he had made sure we had pitched exactly in accordance with the rules. We found all of this somewhat off-putting.
The site has static units all the way around the edge - everyone else has to fit in (in accordance with the rules!) in the middle. We thought the pitches were very close together, and there is no kind of planting or anything to give a sense of privacy.
The facilities were fine, but nothing spectacular.
It is just a short walk through the car park into the centre of Porlock, which has shops, restaurants and pubs. The deli is very nice, lots of good quality local products.
This isn't really our kind of site, i is not bad, but we didn't feel particularly comfortable here.

My husband and I stayed at Porlock Caravan Park in May. We found all the staff to be extremely friendly - nothing was too much trouble. The shower and toilet block was immaculately kept along with the dishwashing and laundry block. Our pitch was superb with space for our awning. Loads of literature was on hand in the reception giving us lots of ideas for days out. We were looking for a tranquil well kept site in the Exmoor area and Porlock fitted the bill perfectly. In Porlock town there were some lovely shops, restaurants and pubs. We will definitely return next year.

When I visited this site midweek in early May, there were only two other touring plots occupied. Nevertheless we had to be directed onto the field and shown how to park a specific way round.
The facilities were spotless, but I was taken by a notice which said we don't like to have too many rules but then wherever I looked the place was festooned with little notices. The washing up room for instance had 17 different notices, (23 if you count the duplicates).
I think I felt like Gingawarrior. Although I may well fit into the category of folks 25-30 years older than him, I drive a classic VW camper van and I felt like they were treating us as trouble.
There ought to be a rating category for overall freedom and welcomeness. Although all the things below scored well, the overall rating was down.

Nicely situated, well set out site.
Toilet facilities clean and well maintained.
Nice extras in dish washing areas (small fridge/freezer free to use and microwave with coin operation.)
One washer and dryer in laundry area with a nice outside drying area for good drying days.
Hair dryers coin operated which was disappointing as similarly and lower priced sites offer these free nowadays.
Although very nice facilities we had to queue twice for showers and once for laundry when the site was very quiet.
Tiny dog exercise area but totally in keeping with attitude to dogs when reading the small print in the booking conditions. Comment made when one dog was off lead in back of car but no comment made to others wandering within van area and in exercise area off the leads!
Similarly whilst we insisted children adhered strictly to rules, others were playing ball games against the very notices banning them and running around unaccompanied in toilets!
No area for children BUT we knew that when booking.
Close to Medical Centre and village shops where they were very friendly.

It is very difficult to fault this campsite when it comes to cleanliness, appearance and facilities. The toilets were spotless and modern, some of the best I’ve ever seen, there was a serious amount of hot water, in fact it may have just been a little too hot.
The site itself was very well maintained, all the borders were nicely planted, the grass cut and paths and roads were neat and tidy, all the paintwork was fresh and clean looking and the overall appearance of the sites was exceptional.
However, I didn’t particularly like this site and felt a bit uncomfortable whilst there. The camping area is in the middle of the site overlooked on all sides by static caravans, many which looked permanently occupied, giving you the sense that you were being watched by someone all the time.
Also, while I was there the camping pitches were empty, so why then was I put on a pitch right next to the wardens only a couple of metres from their window. After a polite but not overly friendly reception it really made feel like I wasn’t particularly welcome at this site, maybe it was because I was the youngest person on the site by 25-30 years and was bound to misbehave.
The final criticism of this site are the hundreds of signs that are just everywhere, in your face all the time. ‘Do this’, ‘Don’t do this’, and in far too much detail when it comes to cleaning the toilet after yourself. I know everyone on a campsite needs to clean up after themselves for other people, but to be reminded of this in every cubicle and at every sink is overkill and they say the more signs there are, the less you read.
As Porlock itself is just a lovely little place, do not let this campsite put you off, come to Porlock but stay at Sparkhayes just next door, the facilities are far more basic and its just a field really, but I certainly felt more at home when I have stayed there in the past.
