When I first saw the website for The Oven campsite in Hayling Island I have to say I was extremely impressed. I have one daughter who is 5 and the play park looked fantastic, very large with lots of activities, not just the usual swings and slide, plus the outdoor pool was an added bonus. The website confirmed that during School Holidays at weekends there was a children's entertainer and a family BBQ. The website made the park seem huge with lots of open space and the pitches sheltered between trees which gave you the impression of space and country feel. In reality the pitches were close together approx 70/80% were permanent pitches and they not only had the best positions, but had spread out to such an extent with paddling pools, gazebos, patio chairs etc. There were no wardens checking the site so basically when it came to rules regarding spaces between pitches etc for fire hazards noone seemed to care. On the Saturday night we were there one permanent pitch had a bit of a party and had 6 cars crammed around the pitch. The Pool was more like a training pool, and the play park was very small for the size of park and the children it had there. I can only describe the cafe as a bit like a road side cafe which you get in laybys.

This site is like marmite you will either love it or hate it?actually thats not strictly true on arrival we were given a pitch surrounded by residents and what i could only call a scrap collector with his van full. On talking to the manager of the site he was very helpfull and allowed us to pick any pitch we wanted.the toilet block was basic and on the odd occasion in the evenings was not very clean the shower block again basic but plenty of hot water. We didnt hear any noise at night and it seemed to go quiet after ten. Hayling island itself was very quiet apart from the fair which was good. There wasnt alot for younger children to do we found one sandy beach area by a pub called the ferryman but only at night when the tide was out. Portsmouth was great only 20 minutes to the historic waterfront from the site, you can go over to the isle of white via hovercraft or car ferry both approx £42.00. All in all the site was cheap and cheerful, far too many residents for my liking and probably wouldn't use the site again but that's because of hayling itself rather than the site

Just got back from an excellent weekend camping at The Oven
The pitch was well maintained, showers were nice and hot
The washing up room had automatic lighting so was quite dark in the daytime
There is a lot of permanent caravans with fences round them and some of the owners were a bit rowdy to say the least !
But that's nothing to do with the campsite itself
Great location to check out Hayling and the local beaches of Southsea and great stuff to do in Portsmouth nearby

The owners were very helpful and the site is in a good location for the town, seafront and pub.
The play area and pool were a hit with the children, and the pool is nice and clean and very warm.
However, we found that the pitches were not very secluded and the toilet blocks were very basic - you got cold whilst dressing from having a shower. We also discovered that a lot of the occupants on the site actually lived there.

Stayed here the last weekend in May the weather was lovely. The campsite was well organised pitches were level with hook up. There were plenty of toilets and showers which were free and plenty of hot water. They are basic but clean.
The park was a big hit for our children, and felt happy with them going on their own. The swimming pool was the best highlight for us and the children even though it was an outside pool the water was so warm it was more like a bath it did get busy in the afternoon sessions but on one morning we had it to our selves. I can imagine in the school holidays it is very busy, which might be a bit off putting as the pool is not that big.
The shop was well stocked and prices were avarage, the games room seemed ok but we didn't use it. The cafe on site was useful and well priced. The beach ( pebble) was not far 3 miles, With an attraction park on the sea front and good value £7.00 each for unlimited rides or you could buy tokens for the rides £10 for 30 tokens most ride are 3 or 4 tokens per person. In Havant there is a Tesco and other retail shops which is only 6miles away. Overall it is a brilliant place for a family holiday and we can't wait to return.

We were booked in for a week with our 2 kids. The staff were friendly, a good stocked shop, the pool was open but always packed with older kids so mine never got a look in. The weather was awful, rain and wind and the tent area was flooded, and the entrance was just a mud bath and that was the only way to the shower / toilets. These I found dated and dirty. This entrance also had the rubbish skips which were always overflowing.

We have just returned from a Bank Holiday weekend at The Oven. Myself, wife and 2 children.
Staff friendly and shop well stocked.
Tent field excellent, although it did flood in places following a downpour Sunday night. We seemed to get away with it unlike the majority of the pitches inside the main site. Every pitch was 2 inches under water. Drainage was terrible.
More than half the pitches seemed to be permanent (sited) touring caravans.
Toilet and shower block clean although dated.
Small cafe on site excellent for breakfasts.
The Ship Inn highly reccomended.
Hayling Fair good for the kids, not too expensive.
Overall an excellent weekend. Would return.

We have just come back from our first visit to The Oven and we loved it! There was myself with my two children agred 10 and 6 and my friend with hers. We were two mums on our own and felt totally safe and comfortable there in our tents.
Facilities: The sites facilities are everything you could need. Blocks with toilets, showers, washing up facilities. Water taps aplenty too. There was also a washing machine and tumble dryer which you could use although they were quite expensive in my opinion. However, should I have needed them, they were there.
The only criticism I have of those facilities were that there were only two hooks on the back of the shower doors and it's really hard not to get your clothes and shoes wet as there is nowhere else to put them. A fold down seat or more hooks on the back of the doors would be really useful. Also, when you come out of the shower, there was only one tiny mirror on the wall and nowhere to put your wet towel etc except the floor. A few shelves and more hooks plus more than one mirror would be good. However, this is definitely not a complain, just a suggestion.
The site itself had a great little shop selling bits and bobs with a very friendly and helpful man behind the counter. The cafe was lovely and clean with, again a very helpful and friendly man behind the counter.
The children loved the play area and the fact that they could ride their bikes around the park on the road without worrying about being knocked off. We felt comfortable and safe in letting them do that too.
The office staff were also very helpful and we got put in the field with the electric hook up and security gates as it was not very busy. The lady in the office said as we were two ladies on our own with children, we would feel a bit safer in there. We did not use the electric hook up although we could have done.
The only disappointment was that the pool was not open. In the brochure it states it is open from Easter and we specifically chose this site because it had a pool and the price was reasonable but when we arrived we were told it was not opening until May. The children were very disappointed and I feel we should have been advised before we arrived but this did not appear to ruin the fun we had and the children soon forgot about it. However, the weather was amazing and it would have been a great addition to the few days we spent there.
Location: The site itself is situated so close to everything you need, walking distance in fact, that it was perfect.
We went to the beach for one afternoon and the children paddled in the sea although the stones hurt their feet! lol We spent an afternoon at the funfair which was so reasonable - £7 for 3 hours worth of rides. Just show your wristband and off you went. The funfair was far better than I thought it would be as well and does have quite a few good - scary - rides!
The Barlow Mow pub which is halfway between the site and the beach was amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was fab and also great value for money! The play area was also a perfect addition to the pub to keep the children amused before and after the food. My only complaint about the pub was that the toilets needed a quick overhaul.
All in all, a great little site which I would not hesitate to go back to and I would certainly recommend (and have already done so) should anybody ask!

I have stayed here twice with my daughter who loved it for the good playground area and the swimming pool. I thought the toilets to be reasonably clean and the camp site is well laid out. You will definitely need ear plugs at night as, although there are rules for noise, no one enforces them. There is a small fair about fifteen minutes walk away on the seafront. I would not want to use this site but for my daughter as it is too noisy at night.

Stayed at Oven site in June with family members ranging from 2-48 years yet again an excellent time (4th visit to this site). Yes it is not the poshest site I have ever been too but the staff are very welcome and friendly and able to answer any queries. Pool was great too and the kids loved it beach(stony) and funfair close by. I found toilet facilities clean an no complaints there. Will certainly visit again.
