Just back from "The Oven" campsite - and it was the first time camping for a few of us. We were a group of 8 adults and 12 children, and had a good time. Toilets and showers were OK, although the toilets could have done with a bit more frequent cleaning late in the day. The site was quite quiet, which was a relief - had visions of lots of loud people driving us nuts.but I think it was probably our group who were the noisiest! There was a small shop on the site, which had a few bits and bobs, but Tesco wasn't too far away so not a problem. We didn't visit the snack bar.and the Saturday night Tony Bennetti disco was hardly "happening".Tony turned the music off at 9.30! He was risking electrocution I guess because of the torrential downpour at the time, so couldn't blame him! The beach was about a 20 minute walk away, which was deserted - we went Saturday morning and the weather was grim! Wanted to find somewhere to fish / go crabbing but beach not suitable for that - no rockpools or pier/pontoon areas. The weather perked up on Saturday afternoon, and we used the swimming pool - great for the kids as it was fairly shallow throughout, and the playground, although small, suited the kids just fine. Would definitely recommend The Barley Mow about a 10 minute walk from the site - really good food for adults and children alike - and VERY reasonable. Good thing is that they welcome children (unlike most places that just put up with them!) - they even have a ball pit / climbing play area - excellent! Only moan would be that the large garbage bin was very near to our 5 pitches, and ponged at the end of every day's fill - it would have been good if that could have been in a less populated place perhaps. Am definitely considering repeating the camping adventure - will try West Wittering and the New Forest next.

I have stayed at The Oven many times and after reading some of the reviews I feel as though I should make a comment. The Oven campsite is great! I have 3 children aged 6 - 10 years old. They thought the site was amazing. The park is lovely and as for the opening hours for the pool; We stayed for 4 days in july and each day we spent hours in the pool not being asked to leave once. It was never shut as there wasn't many ppl there at the time so its just pot luck. They hire out the pool for about £20 I believe and if its not hired its not shut! This is what my family found anyway. The showers are a little tatty but always clean. But its camping not a 5* hotel. I didn't feel uncomfortable with my children showering or going to the loo. And lets face it alot of public loo's are nasty. I wouldn't let my children near them. The Oven is very friendly, staff are very helpful and never rude. I even use the showers when we use the beech in the summer to get the sand off us . £1 shower charge for the whole family. That cannot be beaten. Anyway I would say if you havn't stayed at the Oven, Give it a go! I was very pleased. Cheap Nice and lots of fun for the children. Also we used bbq's. One site said NO! To bbq's. Cheers for reading my views. I hope I have been of some help to you all.

The Oven is perfectly located on Hayling for all amenities. The site is very much a free for all, as stated in another review very loutish. Seasonal campers have fenced off their pitches and then park their vehicles across the adjoining pitch we complete disregard to other campers. Fire regulations appear to be ignored because should a fire occur one would have to negotiate the fencing and poorly parked vehicles to located very basic fire prevention equipment. The shower and toilet block although cleaned regular does not the cleanliness of public toilets at the nearby beach. This does not reflect on the cleaners but to the campers themselves. The showers are awful broken and worn out ironmongery with filthy ceilings and light fitments. This site has true potential only if the owners cared more about the site appearance and facilities. The Oven could be the premier site on Hayling Island.

A very big, busy, noisy site. The pitches are very tightly packed, and the toilet/shower blocks are inadequate to cope with the number of people. The shaver sockets didn't work in the toilets, there was a toilet door missing in the gents, and it was generally dirty. The rubbish facilities were also full and overflowing during the whole of our stay. Don't expect to get much sleep if you go here in high season! Some very inconsiderate campers as well, having rows between themselves at 2-3 in the morning. Good location, close to shops, pub etc

My family and I stayed at the oven for 4 nights and found it good value for money. At just over £12 per night they had a small swimming pool a play area, and a reasonable priced cafe & shop. The beach is only a 10 min walk away with a small cheap fair. My only complaint would be the toilets they could do with a more regular cleaning.

We have just returned from a weekend away at The Oven and have to say it was a fantastic time.We have been three times now and already want to return. The pool is small and only open 3 times a day but its warm and got a shallow end and a deep end. They also have a play park which if your under 12 is the place to be before sunset and just after sun rise. The small cafe is good for breakfast and although small offers everything you need. This was the first time we stayed in the field which was a bit of a walk from the shower block but it was good and tidy. Shower block does have spider webs and no ceiling but it was clean. Toilets needed a bit of attention but it really depended on what time of day you used them early evening they where a bit dodgy but generally they where ok. We shall be returning over the summer holidays.

We visited this campsite over a busy may bank holiday. The site was well laid out and clean and tidy. The site was located close to the beach and local shops. The shower/toilet block was cleaned twice a day, but the whole block could do with updating. And also the owner if possible should look at the layout the sinks are situated in the toilet block which means you are brushing your teeth at the same time as someone else is doing what come natural (not nice). The campsite is a good base to work from with all of the local attraction only a car drive away. Would I go back? yes if the owner did something with the shower/toilet, but for the prices we paid good value for money.

September 2004 I have camped at The Oven on several occasions since 1974 and have just returned from another great weekend on Hayling showing my children where Daddy spent holidays as a child. There have been improvements to the shower / toilet block since my last stay and despite the poor weather on arrival we were soon very comfortable in our tent. There are a lot more permanent caravans on the site these days which meant we had to search a bit for a good pitch but I very much look forward to returning to The Oven again soon. Rob Daley

25/07/03 This is one of three sites owned by the Good family - this like all the others had many static tourers on site some obviously for a very long time with awnings falling down and algae covering caravans and awnings. The whole site gave a general impression of not being cared for the toilets/showers did not have a ceiling just striplights attached to beams with water tank and exposed pipes above covered in cobwebs. The pool looked very nice but small for size of site.

2002 We went to the Oven camp site ,on enetering the site after paying , we saw a notice saying that the pool was closed ,so we went to the man on the gate and said that we wanted to leave because we really wanted the kids to be able to swim, he said he didnt give refunds , even though we had only just paid, nice man!, so we left and will most definatly not be going back, we followed on to Selsey just up the road, fantastic place .
