Went on bank holiday good site very easy to pitch but site is on a hill so level pitches will be hard to find.well stocked shop and the village is nice. Cash point available in the post office /shop for those like me that never take a lot of cash with them. Good selection of pubs and the playground on the park is really good. As for attractions nearby we looked at the Reghead center and Alpaca and to be honest they were pretty poor but that's our opinion. There is also an ostrich farm and castles to visit all within 30 miles. Good trip in general but think you will need to provide your own entertainment for children in poor weather. The views are some of the best I've seen. I would describe it as a good family site. 7/10

I found this campsite really friendly. We were a group (not usually allowed on the camp site) but they took pity on us and allowed us to stay. We were probably the quietest of everyone staying there. The staff were very friendly, the shower and toilet facilities were great and to top it off it had a fantastic field on site to play football.all be it a very sloping pitch.

We have stayed here several times before and always enjoyed it. Have stayed at Easter and in the summer and although it's been fairly busy, it's still been enjoyable. Last time didn't enjoy it quite as much as it was August bank holiday weekend and it was far too busy. People tripping over tent ropes etc, big queues for showers, but any other time it's very enjoyable. Plenty of showers - which are free which is a bonus, free to use your hairdryers, good little shop on site, great location as only short walk to village and very friendly owners. Much nicer than the bigger sites on the shore of Ullswater. Big thumbs up! Definitely worth a trip, just not August Bank Holiday - it says no groups but a massive group of families all arrived separately then all got together in the evening and ended up fighting at 2am!

Good site, owners are really friendly. One thing to look out for is if you go for a tent / electric hook-up pitch they are not that big so you might struggle if you have a good size tent and there are people either side of you already when you get there. Toilets blocks are clean and there is always hot water. Pooley bridge about 10 min walk down road for two good pubs. Loads of space for kids to play near tents also a good little play area with soft bark floor. Noise was not that bad just the odd one or two prats who do not consider other people but that is the price you pay when camping. Would go again as price was not bad About £77 for two nights 4 Adults, 4 Children, 2 cars in 9 berth tent with electric hook-up. Regards Ian

Unfortunately the price had increased for one person, one small tent and no car to £10 per night! (The last two years it was £6. The operator argued that it wasn't but I still have my receipts) She eventually reduced the price to £7.50. This was the third year I have used this site but I probably wont again. a) The price b) the loud music and flashing lights from some of the bigger tents.

We have stayed on this site a couple of times this year but we will not be returning, the price for caravan plus 2 adults £25 extras for dogs and awning. We reserved 2 caravan pitches very early on in the year, we wanted to book for 2 nights but were told that due to it being a bank holiday we had to book for a minimum of 3, so we rushed up to Pooley Bridge on the Friday night and had to pitch up almost in the dark, many others were doing the same, so obviously had been told the same. The site had a full for bank holiday sign at entrance but people were arriving the next day without having booked and staying for 1 or 2 nights, toilet facilities were dreadful as could not cope with amount of people. Too many people, obviously interested in profit only.

June 2005 We visited the campsite this weekend (11/12th June 2005) and had a wonderful time. The site is about five minutes walk from the centre of Pooley Bridge where we had an excellent meal at the Sun Inn on Saturday evening.
The site itself has a number of permanent 'mobile' homes and two separate large fields for camping.
Whilst there were plenty of people staying the campsite did not feel overcrowded and everyone was polite, no noisy neighbours, which can become a problem on other sites.
We did a 15 mile walk along High Street on the Saturday and had a look at some of the other campsites nearby. They all seemed very busy and the one adjacent to the lake must have had hundreds of tents on it. Glad we were not staying there as the facilities must have been totally insufficient.
The toilet blocks (two of them) at Hillcroft were kept clean and tidy and there was plenty of hot water for showers. The showers were also free.
We paid £30 for two nights (2 adults one tent one car) and we thought this was good value. The site has a small shop for essentialls.
There are electical hookups for those that need them but otherwise you can put the tent wherever there is space. Most people used the perimeter of the fields so that children could play in the centre.
I am happy to recommend Hillcroft and we will certainly go back as there is plenty to do in this part of the lake distict.
Thanks
Ian

May 2005 I visted this site at the end of may Bank Holiday 2005. I have stayed on this camp site many times. In the past it has been very good. I was however shocked to see that the prices had gone up significantly. In the past I paid around £13.00 for my wife and I in a tent plus 2 dogs. The price hoever has now gone up to £20. If you are on your own in a tent with one dog it will cost you £17.50.
There were lots of people on the site probably too many, as the facilities couldn't cope. The water pressure was virtually none existant(probably due to the number on the site) We had other problems with drunkeness but this was sorted out and the culprits were asked to leave. I love Hillcroft but I won't be returning.

May 2005 Have stayed here many times but the site has changed hands and is now owned by a commercial company. Unfortunately the standards have slipped significantly. The main issues are:
The costs - £20 per night for 2 adults, 1 tent, 1 car and 2 dogs (£2.50) per night for each dog and they're only little.
The noise - I know it was Bank Holiday but a group of yobs kept everyone awake all night and nothing was done about it until the next day when they were evicted. They even have a security guard on site but he didn't seem to be able to do anthing.
The overspill - far too many tents allowed to camp and the facilities couldn't cope. Cold showers, bins overflowing and queues for the washing up etc.
We feel really disappointed and have emailed the head office to let them know. Lets hope they make some improvements as the staff are lovely and it would be a shame to go elsewhere.

May 2005 This site is surrounded by lots of natural beauty and Ullswater lake is visible in some parts. The camping spaces are plentiful but they do have a slope to them which does not cause any bother. The toilet block is big and very clean and the childrens play park is great.
The shop is well stocked and the staff are very friendly and are full off good advice about the local area. A great site and well worth a visit.
