We have had the pleasure of staying on this site at least twice. Both times we were amazed at the beauty of the setting and the grounds,. It is a lovely walk into mevagissey skirting the lost gardens of heligan. You access the gardens through a gate alongside which couldn't be easier, there is a farm shop through the gate too perfect for fresh meat and supplies.

The camp itself has limited facilities. The toilets are a little bit dated but clean and well kept up.

There was a bit of noise from a tvr car meeting alongside the gardens that weekend, mainly from people staying over in tents to show their cars, riding round the camp. This is not usually the case and the site is usually very quiet,

we love the site and return there if we are in the area as it is one of the best, the price we felt was a bit steep compared to most others with entertainment and better facilities, this we presumed was because you were supposed to be able to use the facilities at pentewan sands included in the price.

As we were in a motor home and had a dog with us, we were unable to use the other facilities which included beach side location. Pool gym saunas, and entertainment in the evening.

We would have like to have used them but it would have involved leaving the motor home on site and walking through a trail in the dark or paying for a taxi.

But we realise that if you are in a car this would have been good value for money,

All in all a very pretty site. Ideal if you want to get away from it all peace and quiet. Close to a lot of attractions, well worth a visit.

Just returned from 8 nights at Heligan and had a great time. We chose our pitch well in advance as it's difficult to fit our Idaho xl on standard pitches. Our pitch (59) was massive but we were in the shade thanks to a few big trees overhead. I imagine this would be welcome in hot weather. If your up by the trees beware of the noisy birds first thing!

Warden's were most helpful and never bothered you. Little shop was ok for papers in the morning but only opens 2hrs in morning and 2 hrs in afternoon. The site is very well looked after with lovely flowers and shrubbery throughout. All the pitches seem to be of a good size but the site does slope down towards the kids playground. We were going to book Pentewen Sands ( sister site 1.5mls away) but it was full. We're glad it was as it looked a bit too cramped for our liking.

The good thing is you have full access to Pentewen Sands which includes a private beach. Access is controlled by a barrier/pass which you get from reception. Pentewen has a brand new entertainment complex which has bar/lounge. Food, Gym, 2x Indoor pools. All really nice. Takeaway is good but very expensive. We have 3 kids, 10,7,4 and felt really safe at Heligan. We had no problem with them going to the playground on there own.

Showers/toilets and washing facilities were spotless but some of the ladies wc were out of order during our stay. Good idea is the family bathroom which has a full size bath and a half size bath. Ideal for scrubbing all the kids after a fun packed day. All in All we loved our stay and will return next year.

We haven't been caravanning for long, but this is without doubt the best site we've been too. The staff are friendly and helpful, the site is beautiful and We haven't been caravanning for long, but this is without doubt the best site we've stayed at. We went to Heligan following a friend’s recommendation and had a great time there. The staff are friendly and helpful, the site is beautiful and the amenities clean and modern. It’s a family-friendly site but there’s space for the kids to run about without causing too much disruption for the rest of us.

An great advantage of the site is the fact that people staying at Heligan can use the facilities at the nearby Pentewan Sands resort. This means free parking close to the beach – and it’s a nice, large sandy beach too. There’s also a toilet / shower block close to the sand – which is very handy, but be aware that it’s closed for cleaning from 2pm until 3.30.

We were lucky with the weather and so we spent a lot of time on the beach, but we also hired mountain bikes from Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire (just outside Pentewan village) and explored some of the many cycle paths around the district. We also visited the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station (now called Future World @ Goonhilly), which is good for a rainy day with technically-minded kids and spent a couple of happy hours at the Model Railway Museum at Mevagissey.

Once piece of advice that may not be news to people who’ve visited this part of Cornwall before. In August, the traffic on the M5 and A30 was awful. Try to travel earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon!

This site is good; the facilities were clean and adequate. It is very picturesque and well laid out with proper single track roads. However be aware that it is on the top of a hill so the wind can get quite high. Our tent doesn’t like very windy conditions, so it made for an interesting week!

The toilets and showers where housed together (split into ladies and gents). However there were a large amount of toilets and only 3 showers in the ladies, which meant queuing in busy periods, it would have made more sense to have a couple of extra showers instead of all those loos. On the positive side the hot water never ran out and you don’t pay extra for them.

There were two separate dish washing areas with three sinks in each and this also housed local information on the walls and leaflets. There was a laundry room with two washing machines and two dryers. However I consider £4 for one wash very excessive, the dryers were 20p for about 5 minutes of drying which seemed reasonable in comparison. There was also an iron and ironing board and this was 20p, but we didn’t use it so I don’t know how long this gave you.

There was what looked like a decent playground for kids (we don’t have any so I’m not sure how good it actually was). There was also a shop that sold all the basics; newspapers, drinks, milk, sweets, bread, sauces, cereal etc. The opening times were poor though, however for a short walk across the road (and I mean very short!) you could get fresh fruit, vegetables, pies, cold meats, sauces, fresh meat, drinks etc from the Heligan Gardens Farm Shop. I thoroughly recommend this shop; it had all sorts of lovely produce. Also we were informed by the site shop that they didn’t freeze people’s own freezer packs but would “lease” you theirs. They required a £1 deposit per block and 50p to freeze each one. I considered this expensive and inconvenient as we had our own blocks and the ones provided were old and not very good at keeping things cool in our two cool boxes.

I would also recommend choosing your pitch carefully (if you have a choice) as we picked what appeared to be a sheltered pitch but which was overhung with trees that held many roosting birds and therefore covered our tent, car and outside equipment in bird poop. There were plenty of pitches away from trees though, so if you choose more carefully than we did you should be fine.

We also suffered from a faulty electric hook-up which took a morning to fix after we’d spent a day figuring out it wasn’t our equipment!

As we were in Cornwall there were a lot of attractions to keep us occupied; Heligan Gardens on the other side of the road from the site is well worth a day’s visit, plenty to keep kids occupied too in the wild area. The Screech Owl Sanctuary is also a great day out if you like incredibly cute and furry owls! Newquay has a great aquarium that’s worth a visit and Eden is as good as always. The local town of Mevagissey is also great for some local retail shops and tourist places, plus the harbour is nice to walk around.

If you go over the summer make sure you look out for the weekly Duck Race on a Friday night, tickets are £1 each and you get one rubber duck in the race for this. They release all the ducks onto the river and the first to reach the end gets a prize. Very funny to watch 400 yellow rubber ducks zooming along a river to a finish line! The river is near to Pentewan if you’re looking for it.

We can thoroughly recommend The Ship Inn pub for food and drink, it’s in Pentewan village about a 5 minute drive from the site. The food was lovely and very well priced for the portions. There are also several supermarkets in St Austell, a 10 minute drive from the site.

Actually stayed for five weeks August 2006. Absolutely loved this site.

We were a week late in arriving due to personal problems and were refunded for the week. Not only that but the warden had marked out our pitch clearly so nobody would use any of our space.

Brilliant for younger children.

Pitches a good size and staff really helpful

The site at the beach is very large and has a great outdoor pool, all available for use of Heligan guests.

The showers need increasing in number for when the site is full, but the bathroom for the younger ones is a great help.

Site shop small and the rolls we bought there we mouldy the next day. The shop at the larger site much better but didn't accept cards.

You can also launch motor boats at the sister site.

All in all, one of the best, most friendly sites I have ever been to and I have been camping/caravanning for nearly 36 years

We tried to book 2 weeks at Heligan's sister site, Pentewan Sands this year. Due to late booking we only managed the second week at Pentewan. The first week we had to book at Heligan.

Upon arriving we were warmly greeted by a helpful warden who directed us to our pitch even though we were early.

The first impressions of the site were very favourable. The grounds were very picturesque and well kept with a good range of plot sizes and types from grass to concrete and or gravel hard standings. There was also a mixture of EHU and non-EHU

A point of note to owners of European caravans, some of the pitches favour caravans with the door on the offside of the caravan. We had one of these and had to use it nose in to make space for the awning.

The campsite is predominantly surrounded by trees and shrubbery with a gentle slope towards the coast giving some spectacular views.

The site consisted of a range of units including tents, caravans, statics, fifth wheelers and motor homes, all well spaced out giving an airy feel.

The facilities were pretty good with plenty of showers and toilets to keep queuing to a minimum. Showers were free although the push button taps had a short timer before cutting off. Nice to see lots of clothes hooks though. Although the shower and toilet blocks were fairly old they were always clean.

The shops opening hours were poor meaning trips in the car are sometimes required unless well organised.

The staff were very friendly, helpful and hard working to ensure the facilities remained clean especially during the poor weather and resulting mud.

Due to the high location and gentle slope, drainage was pretty good, although some awning and tent damage to the grass was visible probably due to overuse of non breathable groundsheets. Areas of grass churned up by vehicles were repaired with sand.

We experienced nothing but the highest standards of behaviour from other site users largely due to the fact that there is no clubhouse. A bonus for those who prefer a quieter holiday.

The larger sister site (Pentewan Sands) is within 2 mile walking distance; however the roads are narrow and twisty and should be used with caution. Its worth the journey though as the private beach there is fantastic.

Ultimately, Heligan Woods impressed us so much, we cancelled our second week at Pentewan and stayed at Heligan for the full 2 weeks.

We had a couple of wet weeks (it was so wet that we even found a toad sheltering inside a case one morning!) here in Aug 2008. The site did get a bit squelchy but the wardens did everything to try & make things bearable, although they would have been better advised to have put stone down on the mud than sand that appeared to have come from Pentewan Sands. Some pitches certainly fared better than others.

The facilities were generally excellent & clean despite the conditions.

The shop was well stocked but perhaps could have benefited from slightly longer opening hours.

You can cycle from the site into mevagissey (on MT bikes) but it is a hardish ride back uphill.

We didn't use Pentewan Sands, we visited once but was a bit loud & brash for our liking although our neighbours for the 1st week had stayed there previously & raved about it.

We arrived in pouring rain and very high gusting wind and thought that we would never get the tent up until the wind dropped. The lady in reception was very understanding and marked all free pitches on the site map in order that we could choose the one which suited us best. While we were looking for a suitable pitch the warden came round in his van to see how we were getting on and offered to show us a very sheltered area of the site. With this assistance we were able to erect our tent without a problem.

The site is in a lovely location with views across fields to the sea from a number of pitches. The ladies (according to my wife) and gent’s toilets, washrooms and showers were always clean with plenty of free hot water, although I imagine that when the site is fully booked there would be a constant queue for the showers, however there is a new set of showers which I believe will be open for the School Holiday season.

The pitches are large, they quote 13m square, which I can confirm for all those which we saw, although some do have trees which cut down the usable area, so mention tent size if large when booking.

As previously mentioned on a previous posting, the shop opening times are very limited outside of the peak season, but next door in the Lost Gardens of Heligan car park is an excellent Farm Shop and Pentewan Sands (their sister site) which is within 2 miles has a large shop with far longer opening hours.

This is an excellent site which I would recommend to anybody who likes a quiet site but within easy distance to numerous attractions and the facilities of Pentewan Sands are also available if required. The warden, his wife and the deputy warden and his wife were all very friendly and helpful. I would certainly consider a return visit.

Stayed here for two weeks as Pentewan Sands wouldn't allow dogs (and our friends wanted to take their dog) and we were rather glad in the end. Heligan is a lovely pretty site with friendly helpful staff.

Our friend's caravan was completely surrounded by water one morning but the warden very quickly dug a drainage channel and also supplied mats so the area didn't become too muddy.

Site shop is adequate and the farm shop nearby is great.

As it was main holidays and the site was fairly full we did have to queue a couple of times for washing up sinks and there was regularly a queue for showers in ladies at busy times (first thing in morning and tea time) though my husband never queued in men's block.

Children's play area on site was great and Heligan Gardens next door is well worth a visit. Lovely children's books written about garden so don't assume kids will be bored!

Mevagissey is a lovely little place with some good restaurants and if you like a nice beach try Manorbier just a few minutes away by car.

Have just come back from a wonderful week at Heligan Woods. The highlights were:

Very clean toilets, shower room, bathroom (with small bath suitable for children and full-size bath), and washing up areas.

Laundry facilities.

Beautiful views.

Peace and quiet.

Lovely walks down to Mevagissey and Pentewan - we did a loop down to Mevagissey and then along the coastal path to Pentewan - amazing views.

The birds singing.

A barn owl flying over whilst sitting outside the tent one night.

Very friendly and helpful staff.

Ice pack freezing available (30p charge per pack)

Reasonable price (£11 per night)

Small shop open and great farm shop around the corner.

Very (and I mean very) slight grumbles:

The children's play area was being refurbished and whilst most of it was open my little one was a bit frustrated by not being able to go on the slide/climbing frame. Looked like a very temporary issue though.

The shop wasn't stocking bread/milk (anything perishable really) as they don't stock this in low season - not a problem though as the farm shop had all this a very quick walk away.

The weather was quite showery and had been fairly wet so the ground was very soft but our pitch wasn't too bad, there were a couple of pitches near us that had quite soggy patches though but it all dried out quickly once the sun came out.

I really liked this site and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and peaceful base in Cornwall. We visited Eden (15 mins), Heligan (next door), Padstow (about an hour), Newquay, and St Ives and had an wonderful week.
