A very well kept site on the edge of the town. Very quiet apart from the noise of the River Dee and no traffic. The site facilities are good and very clean. The town of Ballater has a good range of shops and if you're looking for tweed then no better place. The site was very quiet when I arrived mid week but by the weekend it was quite full but it didn't feel too crowded. There is plenty to do for all sorts in this area and this site is a good base to do it all from.

Just come back from a great weekend at Ballater campsite, we had never stayed at this site before when it was council run, so cannot comment on previous reviews. It's now run by the community, we booked really late for the weekend that the braemar gathering was on -so the site was actually fully booked, however the manager thought there was a possible cancellation and they would contact us. Half an hour later he called back confirming.
The site is really well located in Ballater very close to pubs, Restaurants and great biking and walking. Although the site was full the toilets were spotless and very well maintained -all the facilities were well maintained, pitches were spacious, hard standing for caravans and motor homes and a well maintained grass area for tents.
The prices were in line with similar sites £22 for 2 adults and Campervan, the location is excellent, there doesn't seem to be a play area -but there is plenty of space for play is a very pleasant little town -we hadn't time to shop for food -but there is plenty of local shops including a co-op and a great bakers.
The deli up near the square does great picnic meal deals, there is a Chinese, an Indian take away and for a real treat. -try eating at the italian -la mangetoia -booking required as always popular with locals.
Loads to do biking is very good and there are 2 bike hire shops -the off road trail to dinnet is very family friendly and serious trail bikers are spoilt for choice trips include national trust have crathes castle worth a visit -we will be back and stay longer next time

Why do the vast majority of reviewers look down their noses because this is a council run site. If it was privately owned and charging 50% more would they be happier? My wife & I - both 65++ - booked in for 2 nights but ended up staying for 4.
The reception was delightful. The managers could not have been more helpful in assisting us to choose a suitable pitch (my wife has slight disabilities). They are also knowledgeable regarding the area and more then willing to discuss places of interest, walks etc.
The facilities are clean, user friendly and well maintained. The site itself is in a stunning location, right on the banks of the Dee and surrounded by the Cairngorms.
It is a 5 minute walk into the village, which has everything you could want - superb food, bakers, butchers & shops. My wife even managed to get to the top of Craigendarroch hill (402M - 1320ft) and the views are well worth the effort.
On our 3rd night a camper parked next to us with 3 young men on board - windows thrown open and stereo turned up. A warden soon appeared and peace was restored - Impressive.
The only other noise we heard during our stay was the chuckling of the river and the laughter of children enjoying themselves - both delightful.
We have fallen in love with this site and will return again & again. Congratulations to all involved.

We arrived at this site on a Monday, so not so many people on site, nice and quiet, although the weather did not help, rained most of the time we were there, but the whole country was getting the same.
The site has indeed changed hands as per previous posts and is now been leased from the council to the local community, price per night in July was £22. 50 for caravan & 2 people.
The site itself is well situated, right next to the river DEE, close by the Town centre and all the shops, pubs & restaurants, the butchers shop is one to give a try. The site has a small play park in eye shot of the pitches, handy for looking out for the children / grand children, and plenty of open spaces. One other plus point, not too many rules enforced, as it seems are the norm these days.
The toilet block was fine, good showers & plenty of hot water for doing your dishes, there was a combination entry to the block which is handy if both Male & female want to go at the same time [some places only give you one key].
All in all we liked this place, and would consider a trip back.

We had stayed here several times in the past and returned again during the Jubilee bank holiday week. One of the main benefits of the site is its proximity to Ballater - a delightful small town with good facilities and sufficient restaurants to provide somewhere dry to spend wet evenings!
The camping area is small with no marked out pitches so you can get neighbours very close to you especially when the site is busy. The tent area is also surrounded by the main entry and exit roads from the site so there is disturbance from vehicles and, in school holidays, from numerous children cycling around.
The toilet/shower block is good and clean.
It's excellent value for money - I can't remember the exact fee per night but I recall it being only about £12 for 2 adults and a teenager. At that price, how can you complain? We love the area and no doubt will return for more visits in the future, preferring the proximity to Ballater's facilities over sites in remoter locations.

24carrots' review is spot on. I see reviews giving the reason for both good and bad points as being that it's a Council site - well, I was told that it's being sold to local businesses and will change hands next season (2012). So some things may change for the better, and some for the worse. We were surprised that it was £21 for 2 nights with EHU - the most we paid in our week away.
We came mid-week when the site was very quiet, and the Manager helped us choose the ideal pitch for us and our dog. She was extremely helpful. We found the toilets roomy and spotlessly clean, partially refurbished (new sinks and counter tops), plus plug sockets for your own hair drier (or charging batteries). The showers were powerful, hot and on or off - not the irritating pulse button type.
Excellent pretty circular walk from the site along the riverbank and beside the interesting golf course; you eventually reach a picnic area, then turn back and zig zag your way back past the lovely old houses. An hour max. Plenty of other low level walks in the area too. Town is well worth an afternoon's wander. Braemar and the Linn O'Dee (fabulous waterfall in the Mar Lodge estate) are about half an hour west, Aboyne (has the best general store ever, with Royal Warrant) about the same distance to the east. Balmoral's opening times are very limited indeed, only about 6 weeks a year around July.
P. S. I understand the statics next door are residential, not part of the campsite - and they didn't spoil the view or create any nuisance. Don't let them stop you coming here - this was our second or third visit, and won't be our last.

This is a Council run site. There are a lot of statics. The pitches were very tight.
We were packed in like sardines! It did quieten down after the weekend though.
There is no shop on site but only a short walk into Ballater where there are a few local shops and some nice pubs.
The toilet/shower block was OK with lots of hot water.
There is a children's play area on site and a nice park on the side of the River Dee.
It is not far fro Balmoral Castle but we didn't go there. TV, internet and phone reception was good.

I visited this site in late May and experience heavy rain and I thought the River Spey was going to overflow.
The campsite is a council run campsite and there is loads of statics on the site. The statics look very untidy with bikes and rubbish by a lot of them. The wardens were very helpful and friendly and knew quite a lot about the local area. There is only one circle for tourers and the pitches are not massive and some are sloping. There is no TV reception on some of the pitches depending were you pitch is in relation to the trees.
The toilets and showers are adequate and are what you would expect from a council run site. There is no gate or security on the site but it was very quiet and peaceful.
Ballater is a pretty little town with lots of shop to look in. It is barely five minutes’ walk from the site to the Town centre either along the river or through the streets. The large hotel that you will pass on the way into town does great meals and they let dogs into the bar area where they serve meals.
The site wasn’t brilliant but Ballater is still worth the trip and you get what you pay for and it is a fairly cheap campsite. I recommend this campsite too anyone.

We arrived at this site on spec having spent two days previously on the Aviemore side of the Cairngorm National Park. We were greeted by a very pleasant lady with whom we spent a good deal of time talking about the mountains and the local area - she proved very knowledgeable.
We were charged £11 for two adults for one night which we considered very reasonable indeed - this is a council run site so is probably subsidised.
We were directed to a choice of areas and pitched on a nice flat spot alongside the river. The ground was nice and firm and not rocky, though the Abderdeenshire wind was chilly and persistent.
The toilet block was a short distance and was really the only disappointing aspect of the site. Being a council campsite, the facilities reflected this being more like town centre public toilets than most. They were however clean and spacious.
It's right in the centre of Ballater so there are a range of pubs and bars available though we found that not many were serving food so early on in the season as there was insufficient trade to warrant it.
We found the Alexandra Hotel (by the bridge over the river) was serving food and had the best fish and chips I have ever had - the beer was kept with pride too and there was a good range to suit most tastes.
Also worthy of note is the bakers (by appointment to the Queen) who make some of the best pies and pastries to be found - ideal for filling up a rucksack before heading out into the hills - they're open at 7am too, so an early start isn't a problem.
Overall, a good value campsite in a good location and perfect as a base for the eastern Cairngorms. We'd use it again without hesitation.

This was my very first camping trip so I did not know what to expect.
Everyone seems to have covered most of the info about this site but here are a few more.
A good 'quiet after 10pm' is in force. This is wonderful if you have younger children.
Some sites are on a slight slope ( near the play area at the river/left side) when it rained the water came rolling in the tent.
The site is a bit small and older children may get bored easily but please do take a walk to the loch, I am not a walker but loved every moment of the 8 miles and had such a good feed and sleep after. The children ran riot but in my opinion that's a good thing.
