Great Caravan club site at Chirk, on the Wales border. Mostly hard standings, good flat pitches with some grass pitches.
Good Big pitches, fitted car, caravan, awning easily, found the pitch was Very hard to get awning pegs in, even using rock pegs, they just couldn't get gripped in some places. Stones marked awning/ belongings in a grey mud?
2 toilet blocks, the largest has 4 showers, plenty of toilets and privacy cubicles. Its clean, but a little more attention to detailed cleaning needed, some cobwebs there all week. Nice and warm, showers hot and never had to queue. Ladies- 1 hairdyer out in the main area of room. The other block, opposite it has 4 showers and 1 toilet, it isn't as modern and a bit cool.
Good washing up area, undercover. Seemed to be a washing machine etc and disabled toilet/shower room.
Small children's play area inc a castle fort.
Wardens seemed to keep the grass cut- a lot! a bit strict in the office I found, which put me off going back in for anything. Good information hut, but I found it lacking in local attractions and information on walks from site.
Dog walk is a wooded area, bit muddy, ok for quick exercise, but head along the little lane at the site entrance for best walks we had a dog with us. Also playing field at bottom of site to play with a ball.
Walk from site to the aquaduct, can walk across it or through the tunnel in the other direction. Easy walk into Chirk town which has some nice shops. Spar, chemist, greengrocers, a lovely little home shop opp church, and hardware/all sorts shop opp Hand hotel, who has some funny caravan magnets/signs!
Visited -Rhaeadr waterfall.
Lake Vyrnwy is fantastic, sculpture park dog friendly and a RSPB hide in carpark is even dog friendly. Parking is FREE too, toilets and cafe handy.
Mawr Country park, lovely walk and great to access farm animals, all dog friendly and FREE, a well kept park.
Llangollen, lovely canals, lots of tourist shops. We drove up to Chirk castle twice on our first visit we walked for 2hrs around the grounds, a bit hairy walking through the field with a bull in! The second time, we visited as there was a fete on which was small but very nice, great cakes from the shop. Sadly the garden and castle are not dog friendly, would have been nice to look around the garden. A NT property, but free parking for all.
Hum from factory- noticeable on some days when the wind blew from that direction, especially in the morning when it was quiet, a bit annoying to light sleepers, but then it disappeared on other days! Not hugely intrusive and it wouldn't put me off going back.
A good site for a stop over, I think a few motor homes and caravans used it for this as it has easy access from main roads.
The area is lovely and the site is well positioned.

Having spent 4 nights here over Easter on our way back from Snowdon, I really want to go back for longer.
A lovely clean, well kept site in a lovely location. The assistant wardens are probably the friendliest in the network, or at least they we're the most friendly we have ever come across in 9 years of membership.
The pitches are a nice size and my 4 year old loved the play area shaped like a castle.
There is a good dog walk or if you prefer you can walk off the site into the village, or down a little path through the woods towards the canal and walk over Chirk Aquaduct (there is also a pub not to far off the towpath if you get thirsty on the way back!).
Chirk village has a number of shops, including an excellent butchers, there is a spar shop, a hardware shop, bakery and a few others. Oswestry isn't far if you need a larger supermarket (Sainsburys).
There is also a train station which I presume goes to wrexham which is a short walk from the site. You can walk off the site to Chirk Castle which is a national trust property, this is well worth a visit. It has a small play area for kids and ride on tractors as well as the grounds of the castle itself and all the rooms inside the castle. You can easily spend a day out here, There is also a large field with goal posts in to keep older children entertained. For us, with Children aged 18 months, 4 and 15 and with our 2 dogs this site ticked all of the boxes we could wish for. Just wish we could have stayed for longer.
I suppose the only downside is the factory's that you have to pass on the way to the site and you can also see them off the dog walk, but you cannot do a lot about that.

A lovely, well maintained caravan club site, in an ideal position to visit Chirk castle, you can walk up the castle exit road from the site entrance, (if you are fit) or take the car, there is a very steep hill from the car park to the castle, with a mini bus for those who find it difficult.
While you are at the site visit Erddig house near Wrexham its great.
You could also try Sunday lunch on a narrow boat as it makes its way over the Pontcysyllite aquaduct, we enjoyed this even in the wet weather.
If you pitch in either of the dells you must be prepared for some factory noise, which seems louder at night, it did not stop us sleeping.
The pitches sizes vary so make sure you choose one big enough for your unit.
We will return again.

Just come back from 3 nights stay at this site, arrived at 12. 30 on the sunday it was quite busy with arrivals but didn't have to wait too long I chose a pitch close to the dog walk(ideal for me and my four legged friend) This site is on the doorstep for Chirk Castle(National Trust) Train station about 10 mins walk and chirk about 15mins. Decided to take the train to Wrexham with dog in tow, however if I had been more knowledgable I could have gone to Llandudno. There is a dog friendly pub at the 'Hands Hotel' (not restaurant area) Having got in with the 'locals' I was told they have a large car boot in the old airfield so if you are a car booting fan this sounds a good place to go.
There are many walks from the site, I particular liked the walk down to the aqeduct, and walked further along the canal, there was a pub called The Bridge but I didn't pay a visit.
I really enjoyed this site the staff were very helpful and the site is well maintained. I noted previous comments regarding the 'humming' noise, I was aware but to be honest its not that bad it didn't bother me at all, however it wasn't windy when I stayed so whether the sound is more apparent I don't know.
Will be back!

Just returned from a weekend at this site. It is in a lovely setting next to the castle.
There are lots of walks straight from the site and Chirk is within easy walking distance about 15 mins away. We walked along the river bit muddy to get onto but great listening to the rushing water - sheep in the field so watch the dog if you have one!
We also walked along the canal to the bridge inn - good beer, good wine and friendly locals. They were advertising sunday lunch for £5 but had to come home so didn't try it.
The site is caravan club so facilities to usual cc standard. The dog walk is adequate for the usual early morning and late evening constitutional but with so many walks around your spoilt for choice anyway.
There is a factory nearby and we heard a constant droning noise around 10pm which went on all night so may need to put sound up on tv to drown it out!
Other than that a fab site in a fab location and only 50mins from home we'll be back asap.

Just back from our annual visit to this site (only 1 hour drive from home) and it still met all our expectations. Good spaced pitches, well kept grounds, clean toilet block etc - all the usual Caravan Club standards - can't be beaten.
Apart from booking in, no contact with wardens so can't comment on them. Fabulous walks from site, over the aqueduct or in the Castle grounds.
This time we went to the Poachers Pub (within walking distance along canal path or short drive on the Oswestry road) for Sunday lunch but think we'll venture further afield in future, only cheap but it shows. Perhaps better for an outside drink on a nice afternoon.
We also went into Wrexham on the train - station just down road from site, within walking distance - and had an afternoon shopping and looking about - bit different for us whilst away in caravan.
All in all a wonderful weekend.

Stayed at this lovely site for a couple of nights on our way to the Gower Coast. It is a lovely site, staffed by very helpful and friendly people.
There's a good choice of pitches (if available) - some under pine trees, etc. and some on more open spaces. The whole site seemed sheltered and quiet. The facilities were excellent - clean and very well appointed, as you'd expect from a Caravan Club site.
There is a bit of a hum from the nearby factory, but it's not enough to fuss about!
There are indeed some lovely walks near the site and the 24 hours we spent exploring the area made us think that we will definitely return at some stage.

This was our first visit to this site and we were very pleasantly surprised. Pitches are well spaced out and facilities are very clean as expected from a CC site. Wardens were very friendly and helpful.
There were some lovely walks from the site- through the woods to the canal, along the aqueduct and through the 450m tunnel in the dark. Fun when one of you has the 3 dogs and one is pushing a wheelchair with no torch. There is a handrail! Another lovely walk is up to Chirk Castle - lovely views from the top but cafe is closed on a Monday and Tuesday.
Llangollen is a great place to visit and is only about 5 miles away. Good shops and places to eat. Horse drawn canal boat rides and walks along the canal all make for a busy afternoon.
Reading other reviews it is mentioned about noise from the MDF factory in the town. We didn't hear anything at all. Infact it was a very peaceful site and we will certainly be visiting again.

We stayed at Lady Margaret's Park for 7 nights during the February Half Term (11-18 February).
We last visited this site in, I think, 2000 when we had a part-seasonal pitch there during the Autumn.
Although we prefer sites with a bit more of a view we thought that its sheltered position in woodland might be better than some exposed coastal location in case of high winds.
The site was quite busy due to school holidays when we arrived at 7.00pm on the Friday evening. The wardens were friendly and helpful. The pitches are spread around an open grassed area with some hardstandings and others in 2 woodland areas.
We chose to stay on a pitch in the woodland area of Bluebell Dell, pitch 26. There was a service point - water, CDP and bins about 10 metres away. The toilet block was about a hundred metres away but we mainly used our own facilities. There was a nearby dog walk through the woodlands, although it was a bit muddy. Some of the pitches in the other woodland area, Primrose Dell did have some views through the woodland to the verdant countryside beyond although these views might be lost when the trees are in leaf.
Some people have mentioned the 24 hour noise from the chipboard factory in the village but all we heard was a faint hum, obviously more noticeable, but not intrusive, at night.
The campsite reception sold newspapers and a few other basics and a mobile chip shop call on Saturday evenings. There is a information 'hut' with a good range of attractions both locally and further afield.
The centre of the village of Chirk is an easy walk of under a mile. The village has a small range of shops including a butcher, newsagent, baker, florist, gift shops and a small Spar supermarket. For food there is an Indian restaurant, fish and chip shop and the Hand Hotel. About a mile along the main road towards the A5 there is a small Co-op supermarket and a chip shop opposite - we bought a pleasant take-away meal from the chip shop on the evening of our arrival. There is, also, a Mac Donald's on the A5 about 2 miles away. We visited McD's car park to use their free wi-fi as there was no wi-fi on the campsite.
There are some good walks nearby including ones along the canal. The canal can be reached along the road or by a, very muddy, woodland footpath directly from the campsite. This canal walk can include a walk through the unlit 'darky' tunnel and then over the aqueduct above the River Ceiriog. The quarter mile long tunnel actually passes under the campsite's rally field. We did this walk twice in opposite directions. The second time we took a torch as neither Cary nor Max, the collie, liked the darkness of the tunnel very much. There is a handrail all the way through the tunnel but care would be necessary if one had children. In fact Max half fell in the canal whilst dragging his feet. Fortunately I was able to haul him back as he was still wearing his car harness attached to his lead.
The adjacent Chirk Castle was closed whilst we there although the grounds were open at the weekends. Chirk railway station is just down the road from the campsite. There is normally a regular train service between Chester and Shrewsbury calling at Chirk Station but this was suspended during most of our stay due to flood damage to the line.
We had a day in Llangollen, an easy drive along the A5, but the town was rather quiet out of season. The river was dramatic as it was running very high. The Llangollen Railway was only operating at weekends - a Thomas the Tank Engine weekend was planned for the weekend of 19 February. Near the railway station, on the way to canal there is a very interesting taxidermist's shop with a very wide variety of stuffed animals on display - this has been there for years and fascinated our children when they were young.
We walked the short walk from the centre of Llangollen to the Shropshire Union Canal which runs above the town and walked eastwards towards the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct at Trevor. This spectacular aqueduct built by Telford to carry the Shropshire Union Canal over the River Dee valley is said to be the largest in the UK. There are canal boat trips over the aqueduct in busier seasons but they weren't operating when we were there. Another good family walk, which we took on a previous visit, is to Dinas Bran Castle. This romantic ruin which stands on a hill overlooking Llangollen is reached by an easy climb up a well-marked path from near the Canal.
The ruins of Val Crucis Abbey about a mile outside Llangollen are spectacular although rather spoilt by a rather tacky, mainly static, caravan park next door. The road to Val Crucis passes the site of the annual International Eisteddfod and then continues to the Horseshoe Pass.
At the end of our visit to Llangollen we drove further west along A5 through the beautiful river valley to the village of Carrog. That is the western terminus of the Llangollen Railway and we wanted to look at the campsite there.
As a late Valentine's Day treat we had dinner at 'The Hand Hotel' in Chirk. 'The Hand' actually advertises a 'special'- 'Caravan Club Menu' (£9.95 for 3 courses). The food was imaginative and tasty but the service wasn't very good. The young (part-time?) waitress was lacked training and forgot cutlery for 2 of the courses and the serving cutlery for the vegetables. The restaurant although comfortable and well decorated was rather cold as the central heating was off.
We enjoyed our visit Lady Margaret's Park which was helped by the mild, and mainly dry weather. We would recommend the site highly although it is better suited to good weather.

The site was very busy when we stayed - would estimate less than 20 hardstanding spaces available.
Pitches are large and well kept, plenty of space between units. Toilets / showers are well heated with plenty of hot water and kept very clean. Wardens helpful and friendly and checked us in quickly.
From the site we walked into Chirk - approx 10 mins. The town/village has all you could want - a Spar, a lovely butchers and a bakery. The hotel at the bottom of the hill does a campers special for CC offering 2 courses for £7.95 between 4pm and 7pm.
There is a walk way up to the castle from the entrance to the campsite - about 1 1/2 miles and mainly up hill. Well worth it for the glorious views from the top.
Overall we couldn't fault this site. Well kept, quiet and yet close enough to walk into the village for shopping or a drink. The only negative is the factory which has been mentioned before - we could hear the constant hum of the machinery through the night and this may be intrusive for some.
