Just an update from last october. Nothing changed under new ownership as can be read from previous two accurate reports. The resident tawny owls still hoot at night and there now seems to be a pair of grey partridge on site. For lovers of wild life little egrets and avocet can be seen from the saltmarsh and marsh harrier nearby. The excellent red lion pub is now open all day however for a short drive(3 miles) I would strongly recommend the Chequers at Binham. This is a typical Norfolk rural pub with a quality menu and its own brewery (front street). Also we did the coastal path walks, see previous members report, returning on the coast hopper bus, I can’t fault this bus service- the buses turn up on time and the drivers are very helpful and even smile. I will no doubt be returning.

This is a great site, set back from the A149 coast road by approx 1/4 mile and overlooking the Stiffkey marshes - a great location that isn't spoilt by road noise or other distractions. Overall, the camp was quiet at night even though it was full, being the May Day weekend. The site warden was very friendly and helpful and attended to the toilets and showers, ensuring that they were kept clean. The building includes a laundry room and washing up area in its own room, so much better that way. Also in the washing up room is a large chest freezer, where freezer blocks can be deposited and frozen for free, or alternatively site own blocks can be rented.
The walking is good, ranging from a short stroll into the village of Stiffkey with its general store and pub the Red Lion, and treks further afield along the North Norfolk coast path. The Red Lion serves a number of real ales and good food. Tucked behind the pub is a generous customer car-park.
Direct access to the coast path is available at the bottom of the camp field as it runs right past the campsite! Just beyond the path, the Stiffkey marshes can make a shorter stroll - best to ensure you know when the tides are due though (chart available with the camp warden). We walked between Sherringham and Thornham over three days, returning to the camp each evening using the Coast Hopper bus service. The fares were cheap and the bus stop is at the end of the road to the camp site. Buses run hourly.
In summary, a very good, clean, well-located, hot and free showers camp site, with everything we needed except a cash point within walking distance.

Campsite was excellent and the views were amazing. Shower block and toilets very clean. Very quite camp site and great for kids. Very good for exploring surrounding areas and Wells Next to the Sea beach is recommended. Definitely going back for another visit.

Used this campsite for 5 nights in October where I was one of 3 tents there, as previous comments a very peaceful campsite, only the hooting Tawny owls kept me awake. Toilet block clean and spacious, free hot showers and dish washing facilities. Campsite adjacent the coastal footpath leading to Blakeney one way and Wells the other. We did both ways on different days catching the Coasthopper bus back, the timetable being in the kiosk at the campsite entrance. About a 10 minute walk to the local pub the Red Lion, for those preferring not to use the car, with its excellent food and real ales, my particular favourite being the locally brewed Yetmans ale. Staff helpful but I believe they are retiring this year. Have used this campsite since the 80s and hope to continue to.

Just returned from this fantastic campsite, I am a newbie to camping and this site was ideal. Toilets and Shower block very clean no waiting. The views across the marshes are spectacular and wildlife is in abundance. In the village there is a pub and a post office and a lamp shop. About six miles away is Well-next-to-sea plenty to do here. I would highly recommend this site the wardens are more then helpful and make your stay more special.

We went here because of what other reviewers have reported about the site. And we weren't disappointed. No electric hook-up means no televisions or radios blaring out. One iPod user was a little over-enthusiastic but he turned the volume down when asked. Generally, the site was very quiet and peaceful -at least until the school holidays started, but that's the same everywhere. The lack of chemical disposal isn't a problem - just be careful when you empty the Thetford in the loos. We have a 22' motorhome and found a perfectly level spot without the need for ramps. Levellers could be a benefit if the site is fullish, however. The location is unmatchable. At the top of the field are had sweeping views over the marshes and towards Wells. High tides can be spectacular as the marsh starts to flood. A previous reviewer mentioned that the rivers and marshes are ideal for children. To some extent that's true, but salt marshes can be highly dangerous places because the sea can creep in silently through hidden creeks and sometimes cuts off the unwary. Young children should always be supervised and made aware of the potential dangers. If in doubt, ask the wardens - they understand the area. The local village has a reasonable shop and an excellent pub with a strong reputation for good food - both are only about 10 minutes walk away. This is wonderful, tranquil and restful site. We'll use it as often as possible.

Just returned from a long weekend at this great little site. The wardens were very friendly and helpful, and seemed to be around if required most of the time. We had not booked, but were able to find a level pitch on the upper part of the field (which slopes away towards the marshes), before the crowds descended later on Friday. Although it was a very busy weekend due to exceptionally good weather, with the site almost full, the facilities were clean - more than adequate, did not have to queue at all for the free hot showers or washing up area. The campers consisted mostly of families with young children, some in larger groups, so the site had a lively atmosphere, but quiet between 11pm-7am - even on the Saturday night when one group had a singsong further down the field, we were not disturbed at all. Great walks along the coast and the 'Coast Hopper' bus in the summer - we walked into Wells and back (1 hour each way), and across the marshes and following the tide out across the sands were able to watch the seals basking through binoculars (it is quite a way to the sand as another reviewer mentioned). Finished the weekend off with a superb meal at the local pub, the Stiffkey Red Lion. It could be a bit exposed in less favourable weather conditions, no electric hookups, and there is no chemical waste disposal - the wardens have brought this up with the owner, who doesn't believe it is necessary.! But all in all, definitely worth a visit, we will be camping here again in the not too distant future.

I have been to this site many times with friends and kids. It is perfect - fairly basic but with clean loos, hot showers and freezer for your ice blocks. The owners are friendly (even lent us a spare tent when we discovered we'd forgotten to bring our poles!) and let us charge our phones in their office. The salt marshes are ideal for kids, hours of happy crabbing and bog snorkling, and although the sea is quite far away, you can swim in the rivers that run out to the sea. There are beaches nearby, especially lovely is Holkham which is only about 30 mins away, if that. And Wells-next-the-sea is a beautiful little harbour and is perfect for fish and chips (and more crabbing). Will be going again this summer (2006), can't wait.

August 2005 This site was still quite crowded after the August bank holiday but seemed a happy place. The ample toilet block has six free shower cubicles in the ladies' and four dishwashing basins. Couldn't find a children's play area except for a tyre swing in the trees. The salt marsh and wet sand desert (and Norfolk coast footpath) are next to the site - but it's such a long walk to the water you may give up before you reach it! We took binoculars and watched seals basking there in the evening, so didn't need to pay for the seal boat trips advertised down the road. The geography of the area makes the sea surprisingly far away - probably better to go east to nearby Cley beach and put up with the shingle if you want a swim.

June 2005 Very friendly site, with good, clean, well maintained facilities. The showers and toilets were busy at the weekend when the site was full, but no wait necessary. Lots of interesting wildlife and good walking along the coast nearby. Also plenty of good real ale and fabulous seafood available in the vicinity for those interested in that kind of thing! We were with our toddling twins who were made welcome by all. It seemed that a lot of people camping here were regulars, and I'm not surprised.
