* No children's playground, so quiet in the evenings (yes, this from a parent with children 5 and 7!)
* Tourist information shed (but needs updating, couldn't even see leaflet for Sealife centre)
* Close to lots of great family atractions.
* Firepits for hire.
Negative points
* Toilets were very smelly.(portable cabins)
* Showers (again portable cabins) - I took one look, then just went without. Looked dirty and no privacy. No hot water in sinks in shower room.
Nowhere to plug in hairdryer - sorry a must for me!
* No hot water for washing up. I realise about the environmental thing, but when I am washing up after bbq-ing with things like raw chicken, I want to be able to washup properly.
Sorry to sound negative, but I feel that the shower / toilet / washing up facilities really let down what could be a fab site, and for this reason, we probably wouldn't return.

Have just come back from a 5night stay at Longthorns. This is our second annual holiday in the area. As a family we love this location and it's abundance of activities for us outdoor types. We like basic camping very much and it was what attracted us to the site. When we arrived we had to phone to get Mark to show us to the pitch. We were in the middle field which was fine and we had nice neighbours for our stay.
The site itself is pleasant and the children loved the animals especially the Alpaca's. The honesty shop is a fantastic idea and very useful and well priced. Having a fridge and freezer to use too was such a bonus. There were fire pits for hire too, but you have to be quick with your booking as they are limited in numbers but a lovely addition.
But and this, was a big problem, the smell in the toilet block was foul and only got worse as the week went on, to the point of wretching with each visit. We had read the reviews which said it can be a 'a little smelly' but it was very much worse the week we stayed. The compostable loos were only mildly better because there was never any sawdust or shredded paper to put down it ( we have been to a few sites that have compostable loos and they have never smelled). Please understand that this is not because they are dirty because that isn't the case. The toilets are clean but the systems being used is not efficient enough by quite a way.
The other slight problem we had was during our week there was a military exercise going on and there was a constant stream of very noisy tanks up and down the road just outside the site from 7am-10.30pm. This may not be a problem so much in the lower site or bunny site as there is more surrounding trees to absorb noise.
Mark and Sally the owners are lovely and friendly and we wish them every success for the future but we will not return to the site again because of the loos, as they are now, but we will look with interest to see what improvements are made.

We had an enjoyable week on this site, albeit the weather was a bit iffy at times. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the honesty shop was a real plus due to the isolated location of the site.
The sound of tanks trundling along the road during the day and sometimes at night was fantastic and the sound of them firing on the ranges was great. Loads to see and do and a trip on the steam railway to Swanage was just brilliant, so if you're into tanks or a steam freak then it's ideal.
There are plenty of places to take a walk along the beautiful Dorset coastline as well. The children loved the animals in the fields and enjoyed rounding up the sheep when they managed to escape on a couple of occasions and this all added to the holiday although not intentional on the owners part.
The showers were a bit hit and miss temperature wise but they served their purpose and kept us clean. There was a large space in the middle of the field for the children to play and fires are allowed which is nice, so you can sit out under the stars with a warm cosy feel and just relax.
There were only 2 toilets and the same for the showers so on occasions you would have to wait to use them. On the whole a very good site and we would definitely go there again if in that area.

Had a fantastic weekend at Longthorns Farm. We stayed in the 'Bunny Field' which is a large space without marked pitches - plenty of room.
I thought the facilities were great. You can hire fire pits, and there is an honesty shop selling basic provisions. The bunny field has composting toilets, and a washing up area. Further towards the house there are flush / chemical toilets (which were a bit whiffy) and showers (can't comment on these as didn't use them). The owners were friendly and helpful.
There are lots of animals on the farm - a lovely horse, sheep, and ducks, which add to the experience. Site is also dog friendly, and there were lots of lovely dogs there to fuss.
The location is great - right next door to Monkey World ape rescue centre - you can even hear the residents from time to time if the wind is right. You're also not too far from the coast (we went sea kayaking), Corfe Castle, Dorset Badger Watch or Moors Country Park Go Ape - so there's plenty to do in the area.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend the site, and will definitely be gong back there if I have another break in Dorset.

Had a lovely week at Longthorns, our introduction to camping. Mark and Sally are a fab and friendly couple. Lovely campsite, shower and toilets spotless.
Only downside is, when the chemical flush is being used, the toilets can be a bit ''smelly'', it was fantastic on the days when there was water flush, and a little sinking feeling when the chemicals returned, but, we can see why for the eco awareness within the campsite.
Loved the animals, and especially my boy Shaun the ram, miss going to see, feed and stroke him twice a day. The campfires are fantastic, to walk from the toilet block when they are all lit is a joy to see.
Longthorns is a perfect place to relax, with all the towns and resorts of Dorset easily accesed. We will be returning to this fab back to basics site.

Have just stayed a week at the site and would like to make the following observations:
Site relaxed and calm atmosphere during day.
We don't have children but all the children on the site seemed to enjoy playing together and had plenty of room to play games.
Beautiful location and well cared for site.
Animals are wonderful especially the new alpacas
Loved the honesty shop! good value and lovely local produce.
Loved the setting and the layout which was perfect for basic natural camping. We stayed on 'bunny field' at the top.
Looked like good electric hook ups if wanted on lower site.
The fire pits are a great idea and very good fun
Sally and Mark are lovely people who are trying to provide a natural area for good basic camping
Dorset weather was kind to us
Very easy to access all the wonderful local sights.
Monkeys, tanks and gliders made the camping experience all the better!

However!
The chemical toilet block and waste disposal facilities really struggled with the demand of users and needed to be cleaned out twice during the week: the smell from the toilets on one day was disgusting. The toilet area was kept clean but constant use from unsupervised children meant that they were usually strewn with toilet paper which was a real chore for Sally to clean. Such a shame!

This is a perfect gem of a campsite. Friendly, laid back, firepits and no gimmicks. We camped with our four under 7s, and all had plenty of space. We stayed a week but could easily have stayed two.
The toilets are fairly basic but functional and clean. The showers were a little erratic hot / cold and lacking in privacy (although I understand this has been rectified somewhat now), but they still got us clean. We didn't try the composting toilet- it wasn't in our field.
We loved the honesty shop, and having access to a fridge made camping so much easier. The fire pits were superb. The kids loved finding wood, we cooked dinner on them, then toasted marshmallows, then once the littlies were asleep spent a happy evening watching the embers and prodding them from time to time.
We didn't bother with monkeyworld- looked pricey, and we could hear the monkeys from where we were anyway! Enjoyed the beaches nearby, and went on the ferries to Brownsea island, which was fun.
We don't normally go back to the same place twice, but will come back here. It's lovely.

I've just returned from this campsite.
Plus points:
1. Sally and Mark are lovely people
2. Children loved the sheep, horse and geese and the woodland walk.
3. It is very relaxed and nothing appears to be too much trouble for the Mark and Sally.
Negative points
1. There were 2 showers for the ladies and these were mainly cold, if you had water at all! Admittedly when I told Mark he was very apologetic and turned the water pressure up for the showers. Also the entire floor got wet and muddy, it could do with one of those floor blades and us campers should be asked to blade the floor when finished showering etc.
2. There were 3 ladies toilets for the campsite. Also this was the only place that had hot water, but as there was only one tap it was sometimes too hot for the children to wash their hands under as no cold feed to that one.
3. There was no hot running water to wash up with or wash with
I fully appreciate what Mark and Sally are doing here and it is a lovely place but I feel a few things raised in my points above need to change and also pitching needs to be sorted as when I emailed I did state size of our tent, but we ended up with someone so close behind us there was no room between the guy ropes.
Things to do nearby are Monkey World, Tank Museum and all the various beaches and of course Lulworth Castle and Durdle Dor.
It would be good if on arrival you could ring a bell to attract the owners attention too as when we arrived as others we had to wait around to be shown to our pitch, which seemed a bit strange, laid back may be, though it is a working farm too.
Please obviously make your own mind up but this is a back to basics campsite so if you are new or returning to camping it may not be the site for you

There were five families in our group and we had a section of field marked off for us so we could all pitch together, which was great.
This is a lovely (though quite basic) site in a great location for visiting Weymouth, Poole and Swanage. Very friendly owners and the kids loved the horse, sheep and lambs, ducks and chickens.
The very handy honesty shop was well stocked with all the essentials from disposable barbecues to yoghurt and bread. There is also a fridge freezer for campers' use, which is a great idea.
The firepits were wonderful - it does make a change to be warm sitting around in the evening!
The only downside for me was the showers and toilet facilities. The chemical toilets, though extremely clean, were a bit smelly and blocked up on a couple of occasions. The showers (only 2 in the ladies, not really enough) ran scalding hot and freezing cold at peak times, though the owners are aware of this problem and want to improve the facilities for next year.
We tend to visit different sites each time we camp, but this site was so welcoming and relaxing and in a great area that we will definitely be returning.

This campsite is in a great location being right next to Monkeyworld and close to Poole and other towns in Dorset so there's plenty to do.
It has a great atmosphere. The owners are friendly and helpful and the fire pits and logs provided are good value for money and very welcome on a cold evening.
There are 2 large fields - one has more of a family feel with pitches round the outside leaving the middle of the field free for the kids to run on and the other is more 'hippy' style with great kiting to be had. There are also a couple of tipis and a very useful and reasonably priced honesty shop. The animals on the farm provide entertainment for the children(hens come right up to your tent).
The facilities are the only downside. The toilets in one of the fields are very basic composting style. The main toilet block contains chemical toilets which had a most unpleasant smell. Hot water was erratic but saying that the owners kept all the facilities very clean. Also there is no hot water for washing up.
Personally because of the facilities I wouldn't stay more than a weekend here but don't let that put you off coming.
