Back again, our second visit. The things that have changed are- there are now 2 more toilets and an extra sink. This is still the families favourite site. A working farm with 5 donkeys at the moment. The owners cant be more help full.
We had heavy rain, storms, hail and even some sun in a week. The field held well. No road noise, but a very vocal owl. Still recommend the eggs and milk. This is the perfect base to explore.
We took bikes this time as we found hiring local ones expensive. Use the Manifold trail, it is vehicle free, so safe for the kids. Looks like we will be back again.

Visited August bank holiday weekend, site is on a working farm, camping field is a slight slope but you can find flat spots. On this visit the field was quite full. Lovely location very quiet, close to the Manifold Trail.
Facilities could not handle the amount of people there this weekend, one shower and one toilet and a portaloo was brought in to help relieve (no pun intended) the situation. The owners are lovely helpful people and said by next season more toilets and showers will be built.
All in all a gem of a site including donkeys with babies, horse, sheep, cows, dogs and a friendly cat. Will definitely be going again had a great time not forgetting the local pub The Jervis, good food, real ale and good atmosphere reasonable prices.

Just returned from 5 night trip at Big Hillsdale Farm. Surrounding countryside, villages and views are beautiful. Campsite is a farmers field which does slope but we were able to find a flat pitch for an 8 man tent at the top of the field with spectacular views of the Manifold Valley. We had torrential rain on one evening but field drained well leaving no mud or puddles. Owners allow campfires either in your own container, in one of their containers or even in a dug-out pit and there is a small swing and stream along one side of the field.
Shower and toilet facilities are very basic, one of each plus a washing up sink, although this is placed next to a urinal so not the most pleasant of places to wash your dishes! The facilities are located near the farmhouse which is about 200 yds from the field and uphill on the way back. The shower and toilet are within a large barn and shower does not have its own ceiling so is open to the top of the barn, which means that you cannot shower once it goes dark as there is no overhead light (can always use a torch I suppose).
Farm has lovely donkeys, cows, horses, chickens, ducks etc and owners are more than welcoming if you want to pet them. We were at the site over the August bank holiday and the advertised 10 pitch maximum was exceeded almost by double which meant that many campers were left with sloping pitches but the main problem was that the toilet and shower facilities were far from adequate for such large numbers, although the owners did add a portaloo to ease the congestion. Toilet and showers could have done with a bit more regular cleaning, but this may have been aggravated by the large numbers on site that weekend.
All in all we had a fantastic time and we really enjoyed our stay at this campsite and at £5 per adult with under 14's free it was great value for money. There are many lovely places to visit in the surrounding area and we would go back again.

The site itself is set in beautiful countryside, very rural with great views! The field is quite large sloping down from the top but with quite a few flat areas, we found one right at the top, perfect for quiet we thought. Easy pitching!
No rules or regs which is fine but unfortunately we were joined by a a dad and two teenagers, playing music till very late (I eventually asked them to turn it off, about 11.00, ignoring the ensuing sarcasm!)
However they then proceeded to laugh shout and generally talk loudly until 2.30am, then slam the car door intermittently all night.
Not much sleep for us and I am glad that we were going home the next day.
There was no-one to tell them to shut up officially so we had to put up with it.
Im sure that we could have stayed there on another occasion with no problem but that is the chance you have to take.
It is a shame because the owners were fab, toilet and shower facilities were very clean and well equipped.
A water tap is close by and the donkeys were lovely. Lovely walks are all around and generally the feel of the place is great. I think that we will probably risk it again because the site is so peaceful otherwise.

This is a lovely campsite with a real back to nature old school camping feel. The views and location are amazing overlooking the manifold valley. The owners are very friendly and helpful
The site itself is a field on a working farm the field is uneven, but as the site only has 10 pitches it is easy to find a good pitch,
The facilities are basic one toilet and one shower in a barn, a bit of a walk from the field.
This is a working farm so there are a tun of animals, the kids loved the three donkeys, the are also chickens, ducks, cows and sheep in the next field, not forgetting a friendly farm dog. Our kids loved all the animals
There are pubs a short drive way and a pub that is about 1 mile walk,
From the farm you can walk through the national trust landscape to a number interesting places
In short, this is not a site for those to lean towards glamping or need all facilities at their finger tips, however it you are looking for a small friendly campsite in lovely countryside this is an excellent choice.
We will be returning

This is our perfect campsite, in a great location. The site is a working farm. A big thanks to to the owners and Jessie and Ruby the friendly dogs. The field has a slope, having a XXL tent, we were careful placing it. The normal size units will have no trouble pitching on flat bits. The ground had no rocks and was very easy to peg into. No electric hook ups. We had rain and wind, the field drained very quickly, no water logging. The corner of the field had a small stream with a rope from a tree for the kids. The surrounding fields had sheep and cows and views of the countryside. No road noise, just wild life. The toilet block is about minute walk. These are very basic, set in a barn. One toilet, one shower and warm water for washing--all free. This is a small site and we never waited for any of the above.
Our kids 14, 12, 10 years are still buzzing. Were else can they feed lamps, donkeys, a calf and horses. We had regular visits from the dogs who would play ball or catch the frisbee all night.
You can hire metal camp fire, buy bags of wood, fresh eggs and 'real milk' from the farm. This is the most welcoming site we have visited and is very family friendly. Because of the atmosphere and location we could have easily have stayed longer. Can't believe how cheap the site and bits are, we found ourselves trying haggle the price up. The Riverside café(about3 miles to the left)serves chips, pizza, chicken etc. Also a local shop that sells most things. For a big shop you have Tescos, Morrisons and Sainsbury in Leek(7 miles, right) We will return
