It was our time on this Carrog and we were very pleased with two night weekend stay. We had deliberately chosen this site as our base for the Llangollen Railway Autumn Steam Gala and had pre-booked a hard-standing pitch with electric hook-up at £10 a night inc. Facilities are basic but very clean, however there are no showers, which could be a problem to some but not for us. The site is very tidy, Campers staying on the bottom field do have a lengthy walk to the porta loo's in the barn. At night the site descended into silence quite. The scenery around the area is wonderful and there are some good walks to be had. One being down the lane and along the river, or crossing the bridge to pub in the village beyond. We will certainly be staying at Carrog in the future, as its an excellent base for the Llangollen / Bala area,

We stayed for two nights (friday & saturday) the owners where very nice and helpful because we have a child with behavioural problems. The first field was busy so they let us choose anywhere in the second field. There was only a couple of things that where wrong with the second field, the barbwire fence had fallen down so we had to be very careful where the kids where playing. There was a long walk to the toilets from the second field (there was only four toilets for the site plus it could do with a shower block too!) if you want basic camping this is the site for you. Now for the positives beautiful river very quiet loads of room on second field(could do with cutting! lol) fantastic views and beautiful wild life would defo go back agian! p.s beware of the man at the petrol station at the top of the road do not touch the petrol pump he has to do it! very cheap to camp on, hope to be there soon.

Our first time on this site set amid beautiful scenery with the added advantage of a local pub selling good food reasonably priced and the steam railway, both within walking distance. The first field soon became overcrowded and unless you had booked an electric hook up pitch there was no guidance as to where caravans or tents should pitch up and as a result outfits were set up too close to each other with little regard for privacy, fire safety and / or quick evacuation of the site should the need have arisen and we felt somewhat hemmed in. The toilet facilities, whilst reasonably clean, were totally inadequate for the numbers of people, especially those under canvas who were in the second field. Much as we loved the view and the close proximity of water & disposal point I doubt we will return unless the facilities and site management improve.

Spent pleasant 3 days here.(First visit) Yes, showers would be a decided advantage but the glorious, non-rainy, sunshiny weather more than compensated. Had site virtually to ourselves at first - it certainly gets busy at the weekend and would imagine Bank Hols could be a tad claustrophobic. Hot water in the new toilet units is a plus point. It's quite possible to keep oneself socially acceptable here! Very impressed with cleanliness.
Cat lovers will be delighted with friendly ginger farm puss who will share one's knee, ice cream and even accommodation in the early hours! The "Grouse" pub over the river is friendly, welcoming with excellent Lees beers, good food and with a terrace overlooking the river - blissful on a Summer's day. Quite apart from steam railway, bus routes are adjacent. Would revisit.

We arrived on the Saturday morning to rain but had the tent up in no time. The campsite is basic but very clean and also very tidy. Owners are walking round and very approachable. We had a lovely bank holiday weekend and really enjoyed it despite the rain, the views from the campsite are lovely, and our little girl loved the steam train going up and down from across the road. Great site will definitely visit again.

The site now has 2 extra toilets, it is basic but the river and the local scenery and walks certainly make up for it, we love it there and have been on a number of occasions. The farm is a working sheep farm so you ar e certainly close to the action at shearing time !

May 2005 We have just spent Spring Bank Holiday weekend at this campsite. On Saturday the main camping field, in our opinion, was way overcrowded. Anywhere there was a patch of grass there seemed to be a tent or caravan plonked on it. This ended up that the kids had nowhere to play except on a heap of hardcore and a very small patch of grass in the middle of the field. This resulted in queues for the toilets (one for each sex) which we thought was embarrassing and slightly degrading, more so for the ladies. Indeed, one or two male campers had to head for the trees, we leave the rest to your imagination...... Opposite the main camping field was an overflow tent field, plus a large rally field. The tent field had loads of room in it but the only facility, as far as we could see, was a Tardis-like Portaloo.
If you want to look at the positives; the site is in a very nice setting, set in a valley of mature woodlands, between the river and the steam railway from Llangollen to Carrog. You can see the train running, on the hour, and when it blasts its whistle you can hear it echo round the valley, most evocative! There is a nice pub five minutes walk away and the meals looked very reasonable, although we didn't partake.
Would we use this site again? Yes and no! We would go down and look and if it was full, we would move on. If you are dependant on site facilities, we wouldn't touch it with a bargepole! If you've got your own onboard facilites, it's in a very nice setting and usually cheap (£6.00), although it does go up to £10 at bank holiday weekends.

280704 I'd basically agree with all the other comments posted here. The owner obviously does well out of the Steam railway, as the place was full at the weekend. It's just a shame there are no shower facilities. This reminded me of how camping used to be 20-30 yrs ago. The owner was friendly enough though but he really needs to spend a bit of money on improving the facilities. I loved the area and as a result will go back there but not to his site due to the lack of facilities. When we were there some Dutch campers arrived & were gobsmacked at how crude it all was - yes you really do share a corner of the barn with the sheep for the loos. The pub was good and child friendly. It's ok for an overnight stop or max 2 days after that buy lots of deodorant!!

April 2004 Smallish site with very basic facilities - 1 x male & 1 x female toilet in a barn shared with sheep! Cold tap but NO showers. Cheap at £6 per night for 2 Adults & 2 children in a large double-roomed tent. Pleasant area, good views & a nice 'atmosphere' pub, The Grouse Inn,(child friendly) a short walk away in the village. Friendly locals! Lack of shower facility for campers meant leaving after only 2 nights though, which was a shame.

August 2003 We spent a long weekend on the station camp site. Site is basic but very affordable (I am a single parent). The site is well maintained and clean. Site owner does regular inspections of site and is very approachable and helpful with any problems (fixed my daughters bike!) Lovely views with activities close by. Lovely family site. At end of visit, very happy children. We would go back , worth every penny.
