Stayed at this site for 7 nights over the bank holiday period.

I had wanted to stay at this site since last year and we weren't disappointed! Not much to add from other reviews.

Beautiful site, stunning scenery all around. Plenty to do in the area, Waterfalls walk and nature trail on site, footpaths everywhere. They have a visitor's car park & picnic area for people to come for the day. You can walk to the local village of Llanbedr about 40 mins each way through some beautiful woodland, just go left through the trees just outside the site and you will see the footpath. The village has most things you need and the locals seem friendly. Went to the Victoria Pub a couple of times - lovely beer garden, play area for kids and decent food. Shell Island beach only a short drive away, well worth visiting. Harlech, Porthmadog, Portmerion, Barmouth all within easy reach for a good day out. There is a bus and train service between Barmouth and Llanbedr. Some of our party walked up Snowdon one day. Reception sells ice cream, drinks, eggs, milk, shower cards, maps, sweets (marshmallows to toast on the fire!), and a dairy van comes every morning.

We stayed in the hook up field that has spacious, defined pitches. The non hook up field seemed to be pitch where you like, and everyone seemed to have plenty of room even though it was peak season. The ground seemed level all round the site.

Friendly, laid back atmosphere on site, set by the owner, Aled and his family, who are pleasant and welcoming. Just how you want a campsite owner to be - around if you need them, but unobtrusive. Aled's children seem to help out on site and they are a credit to him and his wife. Campers seemed to be families and couples mainly.

Only points to note rather than criticisms are the very narrow road leading to the site, be prepared to reverse and drive very slowly! Also the toilet/shower/potwash facities - 3 showers for the whole site means queues at times. Not a problem for me, it's all part of the camping experience, just something to be aware of. Plug sockets in toilets for hairdryers/straighteners - very handy!

All in all a great week and recommended campsite if you really want to get away from it all! Hope to return sometime, wish we were still there!

Nice location near streams/hills/coast. We had great weather over the bank holiday but it was very windy but spoke to another camper who said its never been that windy there before. Would stay again but maybe when we have a van as we found the facilities didn't match the number of campers as only 3 showers(unisex also) water pressure wasn't great! and 2 mens toilets but 5 ladies, I can see this is ok when its not busy but there were some queues as it was full.

Being able to have campfire was great though as these sites are rare. All in all had a good weekend great for kids as lots for them to do.

Staff all very friendly, and there is a shop at reception that sells great ice cream.

We visited the robbie's pub in Lanbedr one evening and food was good and good value too.

Lovely beaches near by my favourite is a black rock (Morfa buchan) as been going there for years and years!

Just came back from five nights at this site, originally booked three but so beautiful and peaceful that we stayed on.

The site itself is very picturesque, with a river running through it and rapids / waterfall further upstream. Children have plenty to do, I didn't see one bored kiddie the whole time we were there.

Lots of old fashioned rope swings out over the water, deeper part of river for them to wade/swim in. Mine had hours of fun in an inflatable dinghy!

Plenty of woods to explore, walks to go on and rocks to investigate. Also saw some people fishing from the rocks in the faster flowing rapids if that your thing.

Great for back to nature tranquillity.

Facilities wise, there are two washing up sinks, four showers (if you include the disabled one which anyone can use providing no one disabled needs it), mens and ladies toilets, all lovely and clean and in good working order.

We never waited long for a sink or shower and it was school hols, site about 2/3rds full. Might be worse really high season, but that'd be the case anywhere. We didn't have electric hook up but there's a whole field full of them if that's what you want. Also one field for tents only too, which was nice.

Site owners were lovely, so helpful and friendly. There's a little shop / reception booth that sells ice creams, hot & cold drinks, UHT milk, eggs fresh from the farm, shower cards and will re freeze ice packs on request at no charge. Two shops and cash point in village (about 5 mins drive).

Close by there is Shell Island (only about 10 min driver), which has beautiful sandy beaches and rock pools (tons of starfish). Costs £5.00 per car per day.

Harlech village and castle is lovely for a day out too. We also drover to & climbed Snowdon from this site, although its a good hour's drive and some interesting roads, so I'd recommend camping somewhere closer if that's your plan.

Finally, the absolute best thing about this site is the campfires! You can build one anywhere, although they prefer you to use a patch that's already burned rather than make another. There are some stone pits already built all around the site. You cant collect firewood however as its a protected area. Logs are available on site at £4.00 per bag, and its a really big, generous bag too. Kindling you can bring or buy at shop in village very reasonably.

All in all, a wonderful site, really authentic feel, total escapism and plenty for both young & old to do. Don't usually return to the same place twice, but cant imagine never going back here again. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely superb. Friendliest site in the world. Farmer was so helpful. All utilities excellent. Gave us no pressure to leave the site as it's the first time we had set down our new tent. My 3,4 and 7 year old loved it!

Extremely reasonably priced. The waterfalls are enchanting, the river is beautiful and the water is so clear. There's a couple of cracking pubs locally also and lovely walks too.

Loved it! So much to do and not enough time (2 days) will be back! Awesome!

For me this site is in my top 2 sites ever. The site owner is very pleasant and welcoming. A few things you should consider before booking here.

This site is very rural in the foothills of Snowdonia and as such the weather can be changeable, expect some rain. There is no signal for mobile phones or internet if you need this for work [WiFi available in the future].

The approach road is very narrow with a steep gradient, it is easily manageable but would not recommend it for a novice vanner. Dogs under strict control as this is sheep country, the adjoining fields were full of newborn lambs. You will need to travel a couple of miles to get your daily milk bread papers etc. (unless he has a visiting service at peak times?)

On the plus side it is stunningly beautiful. 3 unisex showers [50p token], 2 male and 2 female toilets all newly built. If you can tear yourself away from the hookup for once then this is the site the gas and 12v bits of your van were made for! you can get a nice spot right next to the river.

And you can pitch where you want (within reason).

Lots of walks around the site and next to the waterfalls, I recommend following the river walk easily marked out with blue posts (1.5 hours). There are lots of benches and picnic tables right by the river and it is shallow enough to let the kids play safely. There are 4 or 5 rope swings around the site too. Best of all you can have a real fire outside the van to cook your meals on.

Brilliant.

Lovely site, best I have visited, but I did have the advantage of visiting out of season, so a slightly rose tinted review, as no doubt the summer will bring hoards of people to covet the riverside pitches

EHU pitches are positioned at the top of the site as you go on, so they don't give views of the river, but you are surrounded on all sides by mountains full of sheep which are very pretty (and noisy when they get fed in the morning!)

Toilets and showers (50p card needed) are immaculate and only recently built

Lots of surrounding walks for the dogs leading straight off the campsite, and amazing views once you climb the hills to the top of the waterfall

The waterfalls themselves are actually within the campsite, so just a short walk up them. The sides of the walk are pretty steep, so supervise the kids

Campfires are allowed, and there are a few stone circled blackened rings around, but would advise bringing a fire pit as it would be a shame if everyone starts scorching the grass everywhere

Owner very friendly, and had no restrictions on where to pitch

Barmouth is approx 7 mile away with it's beaches, but there are also local ones within a 5 mile drive. Including shell island which is about 4 miles away

Nearest shops are all local ones, butchers, village stores etc in Llanbedr, approx 2 miles away. Larger commercial supermarket is Tesco in Porthmadog, approx a 12 mile drive there, but you can visit the Ffestiniog railway or Portmerion on your travels

Amazing views just driving through Wales to the campsite, well worth a visit, but try and aim for mid week or out of the school hols to fully appreciate it

Excellent site a natural beauty, the sound of the river and the waterfalls and the crackling of open fires (allowed on every pitch, no braiser hire needed) cant be beaten. This is a gem.

Waterfalls are spectacular to see and are a five min walk from camp.

Some useful info:

The road to the site is narrow and steep!

There appears to be no phone signal however if you climb the hill about 50yards bingo full signal, this becomes a hive of activity.

If your not fond of kids screaming with delight don't camp facing the river. If you have kids they would be in their element at this site. The river is shallow and safe and has rope swings!

Toilets and showers (shower cards 50p) are basic but plenty of warm water power points and mirrors.

Reception has all the basics for sale including logs. You can walk the river into the village which has plenty of shops and pubs available.

A must do site every year

We've had 2 trips to nantcol this year - both of them for a week. This is my favourite site to date. On one of our trips the sun blazed for the full week, on the other week, the weather was mixed. We had an excellent time on both trips.

Firstly, there is no kids area but that doesn't matter- as previous reviewers have stated - this is natures own playground. Plenty of rope swings (not sure who puts them there but I'm glad they do!), there is the river that is safe for the kids to play and swim in. There are numerous nature trails / walks.

There is fishing allowed in the river and also a reservoir down the road.

The site owner Aled is excellent and very friendly - he will give you advice on things to do/ go etc.

Small shop on site selling ice cream, non alchoholic drinks, milk, chocolates etc.

Camp fires are allowed - aled does sell logs, kindling etc. But make sure you take an axe -the logs tend to be rather too big so you need to split them.

Toilets were immaculate - cleaned numerous times in a day. Whilst they are not the biggest - they are adequate and I never had to wait for more than a few minutes for a shower or the toilet.

Maybe the only suggestion is to have more washing up sinks as there are only 2 at present.

You can pitch anywhere you like which is good and at no time whilst we have been there have we felt cramped in despite the signs saying 'full'.

Nice village 2 1/2 miles down the road with 2 small shops, butchers, 2 pubs (both of them were nice).

Barmouth 15 - 20 min drive away and passes a few hours if the weather isnt good enough to get on the beach.

There is also a nice beach on tal-y-bont which is worth a visit.

This is my favourite site without doubt.

We would have stayed longer but our car was playing up (damaged suspension by hitting a rock on the way to the site).

The site itself is well maintained with good facilities (showers and toilets) which are cleaned on a regular basis. The site itself is rocky, so when pitching it can be difficult to secure some ropes. There is a river which winds through the site, and the falls are within walking distance.

You can use bbq's and have fires, you can buy the logs from Aled who drives around the site selling them and the card you need to use the showers (50p per 5 mins). You are not far from Barmouth or Harlech and the walks are very picturesque. We had a good weekend, the weather was fine except for Sunday when it was very windy.

I would recommend this site to anyone and would return myself.

Just had 3 great days over Bank Holiday weekend at Nantcol.

Fantastic setting, superb location and great atmosphere. I can see why site has been awarded one of top sites in UK. Would strongly recommend to families.

Kids really enjoyed the walk to the Waterfall, playing in the stream and the man made swings scattered around site.

Despite mixed weather and really cold Sunday evening couldn't dampen the weekend.

Shower/Toilet facilities all regularly cleaned each day. Showers 50p for 5 mins via a card bought from Reception and plenty of hot water. Small queue now and again but easily avoided if you time it right even on a busy Bank Holiday weekend.

Campfires at night really added to the atmosphere and logs can be bought at £4 per bag from Aled on site-plenty to keep you going well into the night.

Shell Island, Barmouth, Portmadog all within easy reach.

We will be back soon!
