Just had a fantastic 4day break at Nantcol, our second this year and hope to get one more visit in before end of season. This is our forever site. Got absolutely everything we need and kids are in their element here!
So, yes, we had rain. Lots of it, but we also had fab sunshine! We had a 'great' start on Thursday evening. Forgot to pick up poles:- ( 2 and half hour journey back home for daughter and partner while I stayed in B&B sourced by owner's wife, many thanks. Both the owner and his wife were so helpful. Nothing too much trouble for them.
If you are looking for top site, this is the one. Can't wait to get back and haven't even dried tent out yet!

We were invited to a camping wedding and our first time ever camping. Thanks to the wedding and the beauty of this campsite we are now 'reformed' and enjoy camping short breaks.
The campsite is situated in a beautiful valley, with a stream, waterfalls and rock pools - a real get away from it all.
The shower/toilet block is well maintained and clean. There are 2 fields, one mainly for caravans and another one for tents.
We spent 2 nights at Nantcol and will definitely be back.
The location, the peace and the natural environment make this a place to completely leave every day life behind.

I have just got back today from a week at Nantcol. Was supposed to be 8 nights, but after the severe weather warnings for that area last Friday we decided to postpone a day. Glad we did, when we got there on Saturday the site owner said he had never seen rain like it, and the whole area was very waterlogged.
I had phoned them Thursday night and Friday as I was concerned about the weather, and let them know I had decided to leave it til Saturday, but fully expected to be charged. However, they didn't charge me for the missed night which I thought was very good of them.
Not sure if things have changed since the other peoples reviews, but there are now 4 covered sinks for washing dishes, a ladies shower room with 3 showers, a mens shower room with 2 showers, a ladies washroom with 3 sinks and plugs for hairdryers etc, a mens washroom that looked the same, ladies toilets with (I think) 5 toilets in, mens toilets (no idea how many in!) and a disabled toilet/shower. Shower cards cost 50p for 5 minutes.
We had a great week, but the weather was very disappointing. Had some rain every day, some days it was most of the day. We went to Barmouth, Harlech, Porthmadog and Shell Island, as well as spending a lot of time at the site with the kids going on the rope swings, in the stream, walks etc.
No problem with noise other than the people who pitched up yesterday and had their very noisy toddlers awake from 6. 30am this morning with no effort to try and keep them quiet! Other than that night times were very quiet. We did manage to sit out every night except last night and have a campfire (we bought logs in Harlech, much cheaper at £2. 50 a bag instead of £4. 00 on site!).
There are two things I think the site could do with improving. One is better drainage systems, as the persistent rain left a lot of pitches including mine flooded. In fact the night we missed due to bad weather they had to dig out a trench near our pitch as apparently the water was running down the field. The trench was full this morning, and the area all around our tent (and underneath) was very soggy.
The other is more passing places on the long driveway into the site, as it is an absolute nightmare when you meet anything, and you can end up having to reverse quite a long way which can be a bit scary!
Other than that, no complaints at all. Site owners/family were lovely, and very helpful. Didn't have any mobile phone signal, but bought the wifi connection at £10 for the week so could keep in touch via emails.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at Nantcol.
On arrival we were greeted by the owners who were really friendly people. We had a walk around the site to pick where we wanted to pitch our tent. Unfortunately we had to pitch in the rain (Saturday morning), but soon got ourselves sorted out. The sun came out and spent a lazy afternoon by the river.
The facilities were kept really really clean, and had a lovely atmosphere on the site.
The site is in an ideal family orientated place, and ideal for touring around the North Wales area.
There are lots of lovely walks to be enjoyed in the hills, mountains, forests or lakes which are accessible close to the campsite.
We will definitely return to this site, and the ferrets were made welcome wherever they went (they particularly enjoyed swimming in the river).
We met many lovely campers on the site which made this a very comfortable holiday.

We have just returned from a mid-week stay at Nantcol and I can honestly say that we couldn't ask for anything more from a campsite (other than perhaps a rubbish bin in the dish-washing area, and that's nit-picking)
The site was in a beautiful location, the owners and staff were very friendly and helpful, the people staying at the campsite were considerate of each other (ie. Quiet at night, no littering, polite)
The facilities are great and kept very clean despite the number of people staying ! the shop sells plenty of things, including wi-fi. My family and I had a lovely break (despite the weather)!
It was quite busy around reception on our arrival (plenty of people wanting the lovely ice cream sold there) we settled payment, told the basic camp info and told that we could find a pitch where ever we liked in any of the 3 fields, we chose the smallest field as this had a quiet corner free, we set up our tents and soon after a couple of polite young lads arrived to see if we wanted any wood delivered for a campfire (which we did)
On one of the evening's spent at the campsite we decided to take a walk to see the waterfalls, this turned out to be quite un-nerving as we hadn't taken a torch and hadn't accounted for the time it took to take the circular walk back to camp, with haste we managed to return to the campsite with about 10 mins of daylight to spare, my advice would be to take a torch if you ever go for an evening stroll (however on reflection, this sounds like the common sense that we must be lacking in) The waterfalls were stunning and there were plenty of people enjoying jumping in and around them.
The children in our group (age 1, 3, 14 and 15) all enjoyed paddling in the stream and playing on one of the rope swings over the water.
This is perhaps one of the nicest campsites we have been to and we'll definitely be going again, Thank you Nantcol !
I have marked down child friendliness purely for the fact you have to keep a close eye on them with the river being so close !

We visited this campsite early august 2012 and stayed for 10 days. The drive to the campsite can be tight at times if you are towing but perfectly manageable as there are plenty of passing places.
Upon arrival the reception staff were very helpful and showed us to our pitch as we had booked an electric hook up. We were on pitch 14 right next to the toilet/shower blocks which was perfect as we have 2 young children.
Yes, rock pegs are a must.
The showers and toilets were lovely and clean and the family that run the campsite work very hard to maintain standards. The cards for the showers cost 50p for 5 minutes and I found this plenty of time. I had to queue twice but not for long.
We had no mobile phone signal on the campsite which was lovely (!) although we did get the wifi for 7 days for the olympics coverage which was £10.
The campfires are fantastic and we had great weather 7 days out of 10 so really enjoyed toasting marshmallows! The family come round selling logs and kindling early evening which is £4 for a bag of logs and £1 for a tub of kindling. The ice cream on site is amazing, I highly recommend the Creme Brûlée flavour! I think the shop would do well if it had more items for sale although part of the charm of this campsite is that is is not too commercialised. There is a great butcher in the local village and 2 convenience stores plus a coop in Barmouth.
The waterfalls are amazing and even with 2 children under 5 we managed to climb to the top and they really enjoyed it. They loved playing in the waterfalls and stream and wet shoes are a good idea.
Even though the site was full most of the time we were there it was actually one of the quietest sites I have been to.
The washing up areas are lovely and clean although there is no bin. This is a minor point really but empty your pots and pans thoroughly beforehand.
We didn't experience any midges.
They do recommend you boil the water but we didn't always manage to and found it to be fine.
We did book a table at the Queen Vic pub in the village and when we turned up we had a lovely table in the garden where they have a great play area for the kids. We managed to get served drinks but to order you had to go up to the bar and there were about 20 people in front of us! We were advised there was at least an hour wait for food so even though we had booked a table we had to leave and get a pizza from nearby Talybont.
When we arrived at Nantcol there was a sign saying Border Collie puppies for sale. We ended up falling in love with the last one left and called her Jess and took her home so beware if your heart rules your head!

We have just returned from our first, but certainly not our last stay here. It is a rural retreat with all the mod-cons to keep any reluctant camper quiet. (I should know because I am such person) The facilities are great, new toilet block, separate washroom, hot showers (50p for 5 mins)and washing-up area, but the owners are even better! A great family-run business where the needs of the customer are definitely a priority.
The only regret we had was that we didn't take our children as it is the perfect place for children to explore and enjoy- rope swings, trails and a wonderful stream. All said it is also a perfect place for adults too.
Tents are pitched where there is a space, rather in uniformed rows, and the ability to have a fire is superb. Shop on site supplies logs, matches etc. As well as excellent ice-cream.
The web-site's photographs do not do this place justice. It is beautiful! Plenty of walks to do from the site and shops, including an excellent butcher, only a short drive away.
I cannot recommend this site highly enough and will be returning!

Have just come back from my second visit to this lovely site.
I took 3 children with me for a long weekend, we had campfires and took equipment to cook on the open fire which made the weekend even more special.
I love choosing my own pitch and found a nice little area for the large tent I had borrowed.
The family who run the site are always around and are very helpful and are genuinely nice people.
It was quite busy on the site but I had a lovely hot shower early one morning and didn't wait in a queue. Shower cards are 50p and give time for a quick shower and hairwash. My girls with long hair had 2 shower cards each.
The children love the stream and the rope swings.
The family advise you to boil your drinking water as it comes from their private source, I take a couple of large bottles of water to keep us going until I can boil and cool some. This is not a problem but worth bearing in mind.
I have nothing bad to say about this site, I love it and will return.

I Visited Natcol last weekend for a 3 night stay with a couple of friends, on arriving at the site Aled gave us a warm welcome and showed us to our pitch. As mentioned before rock pegs are a must.
Toilets, showers and washrooms are immaculate site was fully booked but never had to wait. Shop sells basic provisions bread milk eggs but would suggest things like paracetamol rennie the nearest shop is a good trek away. Site is secure and has cctv.
We took advantage of the wifi whilst there it was £5 for 24 hours, what wasn't mentioned though it for the use of one device not per pitch.
The waterfalls are amazing good footwear is a must as ground is uneven in quite a few places. We used the local taxi service to visit the local pub a bargain for a £5 and we agreed a time to be picked up locals were friendly. Would definitely come back for a return visit.

This is a lovely family friendly campsite with the facilities kept clean all the time. The reception sells some basics such as bread, milk and eggs.
There is a Spar shop down the road from the site although it is quite expensive and we found it better to go to Barmouth or Porthmadog. It is a large spacious site with enough room to pitch without being on top of your neighbours.
We enjoyed being able to have a camp fire by your tent, they sell logs at the reception but found it was better to buy them off site as you can get a bigger bundle of logs for your money.
Our youngest loved the waterfall and river on site and was never out of the water. We would recommend this site to other families and will definitely be going back again soon.
Previous reviews have mentioned about the road up to the site and the sheer drop, we didn't find it a problem as long as you drive slowly and be aware of other cars, don't be put off by these reviews as you will be missing out on a great site.
