We rolled up without a booking in December and was surprised at how busy the site was. After booking in and paying the bill, we were shown the motorhome service point and after filling up with fresh water, were given a choice of pitches. The service point is the largest one we have ever used and could certainly accomodate American RV's etc. The warden came over to the pitch and showed us which electric post to use and also gave us info about the site, location of the toilets, showers, pot and pan wash etc.
There is a fenced doggy run on site which is ideal for last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
This site is a paradise for those wanting to spend the day walking and cycling. The staff in the shop provided us with local maps and a selection of walks of between three and eight miles. Curiously enough, we seemed to pass the pub each time on the way back to the site and called in for a swift half, or two. The pub can be reached in a few minutes from the site using one of two well made paths.
It is also possible to walk to the Conkers centre next door to the site, via a cutting through the trees and a path. There is also a rather futuristic Youth Hostel a couple of hindred yards away that serves beer. The prices were ok. Food was available although we only had the liquid lunch.
Unusually for use, we used the on site showers as she who must be obeyed said I had not set the hot water in the motorhome. Anyway, the showers in the toilet block were very clean and the water warm.
As said in other posts, the site is obviously new and will mature in time. No effort has been spared though as someone has planted hundreds - maybe thousands of shrubs - and so once these get a toe hold, the site will have a lovely, natural perimeter.
We have booked again for the end of January. The site is just over one hour from home for us, so this is an ideal weekend retreat for us and the dog.

Just returned from 5 days over New Year. What a credit the site and facilities are to the wardens, Pete, Dawn & Russell. The toilet / shower blocks are heated, impeccably clean and have all you need & very hot showers. The dishwashing facilities were always clean and tidy with plentiful hot water as was the laundry area and family room. We had a great welcome from Pete he took us to our pitch and each time he passed he asked if everything was OK. They were knowledgeable of the local area. Even upon leaving Pete’s head appeared from his awning to say have a safe journey.
The site is very open at the moment with saplings planted, hard standings for caravans / motorhomes, the approach road was clean and tidy with a good road surface, the only issue is the signs to the site are very poor.
Disappointed with Conkers award winning attraction, appears to be very teenager / adult orientated with just a little of adventure for smaller children, some of the indoor discovery displays were broken or not working and the winter wonderland was only available if booked in advance, the train was not working, the café was drinks only and they took 25 minutes to serve you, the drinks were disgusting and we had a refund. – Would not visit this attraction again – charged full price for everything and very little was working.
Moira Furnace was better value for money half the price with a lot more to offer for smaller children.
Plenty of walks in the local area and good signage to direct you.
Shop was less than 1 mile in Overseal. For all the needs you should require, daily papers bread milk etc Village (Moira) has a post office and a small grocery store within walking distance. There is also a pub, we did not use it however a fellow camper had eaten there and was really pleased with it.
A site we will definitely be returning to in the very near future. A site for people who like a quiet, open & clean sites, one you need to try with an open mind dispite the reviews below

A nice site, now with full toilet facilities. I would go for a hardstanding if I went back again. Wardens were very friendly and pleasant, but seemed to lack experience. Caravans were rather haphazardly pitched, some were very close together - little indication of the boundaries of individual grass pitches.

Just back from weekend at this site. Wardens were very friendly and the gentleman - Pete - takes you to your pitch and makes sure you are ok. Toilets and showers were spotless. Make sure you close shower curtain before turning on the shower though as the water comes over the shower tray.
My husband took our daughter (11) to Conkers on the Saturday. (There is a short cut through the woods - which is also a good dog walk). If you take your membership card and receipt, one child gets in free. Adult price £6.32. We really enjoyed our stay at this site and will definitely return.

We stayed here for a long weekend in August as we were meeting friends who live in the area. The site itself has good toilet facilities and is well spaced out. The wardens are really friendly and helpful.
However, as this is a new site it is extremely barren. It is basically just a massive, exposed field with hard standings and hundreds of 1 metre high saplings. You can see the potential of the site but it will be a good 10 years before it begins to look less barren and the trees and shrubs grow up enough to provide some shelter from the wind.
There are several good walking and cycling paths in the area and it is right next door to the Conkers experience. There is a pub about 10 minutes walk away along the old railway line and a large tescos in Ashby de la Zouch which is about 10 minutes drive away.
We would not return to this site in the near future but it will definitely improve with age.

Just got back from a very hot over night stay. After 5 hours travelling in a car with 2 kids and a dog in tow arrived on site to a friendly but apologetic welcome. 'No ball games, cricket, frisbee, etc' They have sectioned off a very small area for the kids to play ball in so we pitched tent next to this. The guy did say that they were looking in to getting a children's play area so hopefully that will be sorted.
The toilet block and showers were lovely. Admittedly showers cubicles were a bit small but water was warm and it was private. Didn't have to queue at all even though site was busy.
Was only a small area to walk the dog but as the location of the site was so good there were plenty of places to walk her.
Ventured to local pub which was a bit outdated and didn't seem to have a great selection but was adequate.
Main gripe was that on the morning of leaving it was ever so hot so we packed tent away thinking we could shower afterwards. However when we went to shower block we were told that toilets and showers were closed between 11 and 12 for cleaning. Meant a sweaty 4 hour drive home. Just a suggestion but as everyone leaving has to be off the site by 12 wouldn't it be better to clean them between 12 and 1. Meant we had to drive to services for the kids to go to the loo!

Both my husband and myself grew up in the local area although we live about an hour away now. We've just had 3 nights here so that we could visit family.
This area was part of the coalfields and has undergone alot of regeneration within the last 10 years or so, prior to this it was generally very run down. The new National Forest has been created and will be great eventually if investment continues. There are lots of old railway lines which are gradually being stoned/tarmaced and are being linked together. You can walk quite a few miles on the tracks and the dogs loved it. The restored Ashby canal is within walking distance (this is work in progess).
Swadlincote is close by but so is Ashby de la Zouch which is an old market town and much prettier, there's a large Tesco on the outskirts should you need it. There aren't any shops within walking distance - quite odd given how built up the area is.
The area is improving and eventually it will be very nice but keep in mind that it is still developing.
The site is built on clay and they've done wonders in getting the grass established - be warned though if it's dry it's like rock and I would imagine it could get heavy going if there was alot of rain although there are plenty of hardstandings. Trees have been planted but they're still at the twiglet stage and so there is little shelter and absolutely no shade as we found out during this very hot and sunny weekend. It means that the site looks a little barren but it will mature.
The facilities have just opened and I assume there must have been some issue with planning (didn't get chance to ask the wardens about this). Basically it's a portacabin that has been clad in wood. Yes, everything is brand spanking new and spotless but it was all extremely tight for space and didn't feel very substantial. The showers are the push button types which spray all over the floor and have curtains. As the cubicles are so small the shower curtain sticks to you as you try to wash.
Just a personal moan but I hate these types of showers as you cannot regulate the temperature and when the weathers hot all you want is a cool shower.
There are 3 dishwashing sinks in the block but again space is tight so I would hazard a guess that only 2 can be used at the same time.
We felt this was disappiointing as it's a brand new site and should have been done properly.
The site was quiet and laid back and the wardens are very friendly and helpful.
I do have to have another moan though (sorry). This is a caranvanning and camping club site (we are members) and for 3 nights it has cost us £86.10 for 3 adults (daughter is 18). This is due to the way in which their charging structure works but I think is really very expensive for what you get. If we had not been planning to visit family we would have gone elsewhere and we certainly won't be staying on any more of the club sites in high season.
If you are planning to stay here please check out the prices first.
Would we stay again - no don't think so, felt a bit ripped off, not good value for money.

The site is situated in the heart of the National Forest. Although the site only opened in September 2007, it is already starting to show signs of maturity and is kept in excellent condition by the friendly managers. The facilities have been enhanced by the recent addition of a new shower and toilet block, which also includes laundrette, dishwashing and disabled facilities. The site shop stocks fresh milk and a good selection of essential items and there is a post office shop in Moira village which sells newspapers. Swadlincote is the nearest town and offers good shopping facilities including a new Morrison’s and is only a five minute drive from the site.
The new Youth Hostel, which is adjacent to the camp site and is open to Non Residents, has a bistro, coffee shop and well stocked bar with a local real draught ale. There are a variety of pubs in the area, some of which serve food. Ask the site managers for recommendations or my recommendation is to give them all a try!
The National Forest is a “forest in the making” it covers some 200 sq miles and millions of trees have been planted transforming a previously industrialised area into a green landscape. In addition, footpaths have been improved and new permissive paths created to give access to the newly created woodlands. The gently sloping terrain is ideally suited for all levels of walkers and there is an extensive programme of led walks held throughout the year hosted by the local Ramblers groups and the local councils. A network of traffic free hard surfaced foot/cycle paths can be accessed directly from the site and are mainly flat with gentle slopes which make them ideal for families and disabled users.
There is no shortage of things to do or see for all age groups in this area – check out the tourist information services in Ashby De La Zouch and Swadlincote.
As a retiree I have taken full advantage of the Caravan and Camping club 28 day rule and have stayed on this site extensively since March 2008 - you will not be disappointed.

Spent 5 very pleasant days at this new site. Toilets/showers etc still under construction but the piches and site in general are top quality. If you visit the site office and look through the hundreds of brochures there you will find more than sufficient to keep you entertained in the area for weeks. The YHA new building next door offer bar and restraunt facilities to site users and Ashby town a couple of miles away offers everything you could want.

With there being no other reviews of Conkers, we were totally open minded when we arrived, and I have to say we were very pleasantly suprised.
The site itself is not well signposted and it would be very easy to pass it and not notice. If you put the postcode in a SatNav, it takes you to Conkers itself, not the park (must share a postcode)
The site managers were very welcoming and friendly, giving us lots of hints on where to eat, where the pubs are etc.
The site itself is very open - very, very open! There is no shelter and so if you are adverse to a bit of wind and the elements think carefully before booking.
The pitches are mostly level, some sloping, but we had a hardstanding and it was very spacious.
The area is very quiet, infact it was a bit like a timewarp - the local pub 'The Navigation' was not pleasant, the locals looked at us like we had 2 heads and the place needed a good clean and redecorating!
Also, we couldnt find a shop for newspapers, bread etc within walking distance, we had to drive into Swadlincote to the supermarket.
All in all, we had a lovely weekend, but wouldnt go back as there isnt enough in the local area for us.
