A nice site with young trees, which is a shame as you can feel quite 'open', especially the weekend we went, it was extremely windy. We had a very friendly welcome from the wardens and help pitching up, we noticed that everyone got this as standard which was nice.!
Facilities- standard C&CC. Clean and welcoming, however, the washing up room is a tad tiny when so busy!
Youth hostel next door has a bar and was always buzzing with activity, none of which bothered us at all considering how close it is.
Nice walks from site. Walked over to the Black Lion pub at Blackfordby, quite a trek, but great burgers! Good value for money.
Chip van comes on a Friday, lovely.

We booked this site with in-laws in their motorhome. They had hard stand and we had grass which was right next to theirs.
Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely clean facilities, field for kids to play in, loads of space and lovely location for local attractions. Conkers is right next door although we didn't bother.
The grassed area we were on sloped quite a bit so couldn't properly setup the ZIG. The site seemed quite exposed and (this weekend) was very windy! We found that the bathroom facilities were a bit tight when we took one or both of our kids in (3 & 7) but were fine on our own, the family room is better but still tight. The wash room was quite compact too.
We would probably visit here again in the future.
As an aside and nothing to do with the site - we visited the Navigation Pub as other posters (with indoor/outdoor play area) - I would definitely NOT bother, apparently their chip/PIN machine is on the blink and they are waiting a new one (after 6wks!) so they don't take bank cards, the play area and the pub in general really needs a refurb (quite desperately!), the play are is quite dangerous and there are animals that apparently bite! On the plus side it does have a few nice beers (didn't want to risk the food!) and there is an excellent new play area on the other side of the road which I would go to instead!

The site is very easy to find and is on the same site as the YHA. Conkers Waterside is just 5 mins down the road.
On arrival we were shown to and directed as to how to put the caravan on the pitch, I think we must have looked a bit new to touring! We were on a hard standing pitch but the site has excellent drainage and it was not really necessary to be on hard standing, even in April!
With two young children 2 and 5 we were not disturbed at all (very quiet), equally because the pitches were so well spaced the children did not disturb anyone else when playing outside on the grass. The children were very safe with brand new fencing all around the site.
There are walk/cycle routes leading straight from the top of the campsite. The Navigation Inn is just 5 mins walk along the footpath and has a 'wacky type warehouse' indoor play area for young children.
The toilet/shower/water/waste water/chemical disposal facilities are all brand new and could not be faulted.
Only negative:
There is no play area (plenty of grass though), so need to take own 'beach type' toys for children.
There are plenty of local attractions and I can thoroughly recommend Snibston (science/engineering experiments/history place), excellent value for money with the vast majority being indoors, so wonderful if the weather is bad, we stayed for 5 hours and still had not done everything! Very much learning through play, even the swings and see-saws in the play area were different heights/length.
I would not bother with Conkers Centre it was disappointing for the price, we had done everything after 2 hours, including a 10 min ride on the train and the vast majority is outside, so not good if it is wet.

Received a warm and friendly welcome on arrival. The site manager was helpful, he showed us to our hardstanding and gave us some useful tips as it was our first time out with a caravan.
Absolutely spotless facilities and site is well maintained. Cleanest toilets and showers we've ever seen. I'm a clean freak so that's a real compliment from me. 10 min walk from site to Conkers Park. We were given discount upon presenting our c&cc membership card and receipt from site. 1 child free entry for each paying adult which worked out a lot cheaper than a family pass. Again, the site manager was very helpful, offering us vouchers and advising us we'd get a discount if we show our membership card.
Not much on site for children to do but plenty to explore in the area. We took our two children (14 & 10) to the Swadlincote Ski Centre for the day. Good value for money and the kids loved it. We missed the chip van on Friday as we were too late getting back, however we did spot a chip shop in Overseal (a few mins by car or a short walk). The portions are huge, we had to split the small portion between 2 of us, I wouldn't be exaggerating to say the fish is a foot long. Visited a nice little pub about 10 mins drive from the site, The Shoulder of Mutton. Again, lovely and clean and good service.
Overall, this is a lovely site but do agree, could do with a small play area. We would visit this site again and hope the new manager keeps up the excellent standards.

What a great site, very warm welcome and the cleanest facilities I have ever seen!
A kids play park would be good but there is a pub in 10 mins non road paths walk that has indoor and outdoor play area and very good value proper home cooked food.
Conkers waterside also in 10-15 mins walk. Again a very well looked after site, spacious and open areas.

Just spent 3 nights here and I agree with the people below. What a lovely site - spotlessly clean and tidy, and the wardens Pete and his wife (sorry didn't catch your name) were both extremely helpful and friendly. Pete always had a smile and friendly word to all the campers and even joined in when my grandson has a new scooter for his birthday - although he couldn't find the brakes and almost ended up in the hedge !
If there was a down side - it would be that the shower curtain tries to wrap itself around you when in use, and as the cubicles are a tad too small, it is impossible to get away from the 'cold nylon on the bottom ' problem, and that there was no children's playground although there was a field with only a basketball hoop - so perhaps one could be built there. However that said - it is a small price to pay.
Well done to the wardens and good luck to them in their new position in Devises.

This was our first visit to Conkers C&CC, and as it's so local to us I don't understand why we have left it so long! The site is smashing - nice level pitches with a spacious feeling.
The loo block was spotless - I'd have liked the shower cubicles to be a bit bigger though, as I have that 'showering in a wardrobe' feeling! 4 showers only, but I didn't have to queue even though the site was quite busy.
The Conkers Forest Centre is within walking distance and we took full advantage as we have an annual pass (it did seem quite pricey when I looked at the day admission fees.) Nevertheless there are lovely walks to be had in Sarah's Wood and all the other bits of National Forest nearby.
The site would benefit from a play area despite having Conkers on the doorstep. Our dog enjoyed playing ball in the fenced off dog walk area.
There is a small shop on site for basics (free range eggs got a big thumbs up at camping breakfast time) and a Co-Op in Overseal, where there is a chippy as well (didn't go, but will do in the future).
We had one evening meal at the adjacent Youth Hostel, very good food and very reasonably priced. All in all we had a great time at Conkers and it is on our list for some winter campings!

Just got back from a weekend away and it was fab. The site is very quiet and the facilities are spotless. This is a new site and has no established shelter as yet, so is open to all the elements. There is a small shop on site selling basics. The only negatives are, there is no playarea and no recycling facilities.
Conkers is a 5 mins walk away through the woods with plenty of cycling/walking trails.
If all you want is peace and quiet this is the site for you. I would definitely go again.

Just back from 4 nights at this very friendly site.
Excellent service when we booked and a very warm welcome when we arrived. Only a basic shop on site but more than enough for us.
Plenty of space even as site filled for the week-end. 10/10 for washing facilities - always spotless.
Masses of paths in the area for walking/biking with map available in reception. Plus Conkers attraction just 5 minutes walk away is great for the kids.
We were directed to local pub for food - just a short walk through the woods, but the standards were basic so didn't revisit. However we would recommend The Shoulder Of Mutton in Oakthorpe. We found it on our first lunch time when out walking - so good/cheap we went back by car that evening (5 mins drive). Fantastic warm welcome, varied lunch and evening menu. The chef even created something special for one of our party who in vegan

Just got back from a wonderful 5-night stay at Conkers.
The wardens were very helpful right from the start when I rang to ask if I could arrive a day early on Saturday instead of Sunday.
The facilities were immaculate, as one would expect from a C&CC site.
Although the site is not that big, I was surprised to find only 1 toilet / shower block for the entire site.
The ladies side has 3 showers, 2 cubicles with wash basins, 4 wash basins in the open part, and 5 toilets and 1 toilet kitted out with hand rails etc. Plenty of hot water for all.
There is a separate family room and a separate disable shower / toilet room.
Since I stayed during mid season, I did not have to queue for the facilities, except on Sunday morning when the block was closed for cleaning. I had to queue to use either the family or disabled room instead, along with those who were about to leave the site after their stay.
Our EHU pitch was spacious in the middle of the field, with the water / refuse point, dog walk and shower/toilet block very close by.
The ground was quite hard and dry, so it would be advisable to bring some strong pegs in case one needs them.
The reception keep some basic items, and have eggs and icecream for sale.
Supermarkets are not far away from the site, so one can easily stock up on provisions.
The site was very peaceful, except for the occasional bikers who appeared to like to use the nearby fields for practice runs in the middle of the night!
Be warned about music events on Saturdays during the warmer months, check out what's on first in case they are not to your taste. The concert (tribute band to the Kinks and Rolling Stones) stopped shortly after 23:00h when we were there on Saturday, and we heard Jumping Jack Flash a few times!
The dog walk was a big patch of fenced off grass, enabling my dog to run freely off lead which he loved.
There was not much shelter to speak of, and it could be very windy, like on the day of our arrival and my companion and I struggled to put our Quick Erect Khyam Excelsior XL up!
There was hardly any facilities for children to play. However, to me, that would be a bonus!
The only niggle I have, and it is a micro-size niggle, and is not specific to this site, is that I wish the shower cubicle could be slightly longer, so that the shower curtain can be hung a bit further away so that it does not stick to my bum / body, which I find very off-putting!
There is a Youth Hostel close by, and the bar is open to the public. However, the prices are quite expensive, and the range very limited.
There is a pub, the Navigator, within a short walk through the forest. I cannot comment on the prices as I did not drink there.
There is a fish and chip / burger / kebab van that visits the site on Fridays. Can't comment on the quality as we left on Thursday!
As for the surrounding area, there were plenty of walks just next to the campsite as well as further afield.
The walk around the reservoir near Albert Village was peaceful, however, it did not have any shades. Foremark reservoir was also quite nice and peaceful.
The place we liked best was Roliston Forestry Centre as it has some lovely shaded walks that were much appreciated during hot sunny days! My dog loved jumping into the water to cool himself down and to chase ducks and geese!
All in all, a very pleasant stay at Conkers, highly recommended.
