This site is so good that after spending the first night of our holiday here on the way to Lincolnshire we decided to spend the last night here too.
The staff are really friendly and helpful at all times. While we were on site there was a massive thunderstorm and torrential rain. Although the site became quite water-logged it drained very quickly and the staff helped all those who were affected by the water.
The site is well set out and very tidy. The showers and toilets are exceptionally clean. There is often a member of staff in there giving it a clean over throughout the day as well as the big clean each morning.
Probably the best quality this site has though is the location. Just walk along the drive and up a path and the National Forest is your oyster. We walked all the way round the area with our dogs, exploring all the paths, pools, woods, etc.
Just a short wall along the track is The Navigation pub which provides some very tasty meals (just make sure you order before 8pm). The pub is very child and dog friendly.
We will definitely be returning to this site many, many times.

Just spent a very enjoyable 7 days here on a very well kept site. Toilets/showers always clean plenty hot showers. Staff always helpful and pleasant, surprised how quiet dogs and kids are here. Plenty of good shopping at Swadlingcote and Burton on Trent just 7 miles away. Don't know much about local pubs as we don't drink. Fish and chip van was good value on a Friday night. Would highly recommend. Plenty of water points around site waste water and chemical waste site well positioned near toilet block. Hope to return later this year.

Have stayed here twice - first time summer of 2010, when it was quiet on the Thursday I arrived but completely packed by the weekend. My concern then was more about the unsupervised children throwing frisbees around my van and running around the central block without consideration for others, rather than the limited facilities which just about coped. This time the site was about a quarter full and was very quiet, not surprising considering it was so wet and cold.
The site, as mentioned previously, is very exposed but luckily not windy enough to cause too much trouble setting up the utility tent. I was asked this time not to put the tent on the grass because it was so wet (it does seem to take a long time to dry out) so the rock pegs were put to good use on the gravel hard-standing - not easy because hammering them in could result in the ground breaking up. I went with EHU as well.
The gents shower/toilet block contains 3 showers, 3 wash basin cubicles and 3 toilet cubicles. There's a dishwashing room (3 sinks), laundry and separate CDP. The shower/toilet room and entry barrier are security coded. The staff were very welcoming.
Nearby Moira (5 minute walk) has a furnace museum and canal (and a good folk festival every summer), while Overseal (20 minute walk) has a decent fish & chip shop. Calke Abbey (NT), Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Tamworth are a short drive away.
Mobile (O2) and 3G ('3') reception were good.
I would use this site again but not during peak season - it's useful for my business trips as well and better than Kinsgbury C&CC due to the latter's traffic noise.

We, (myself, hubby and small dog) have just returned from a 2 night weekend break at Conkers. The site was easy to find and access. We picked this site because it is only an hour away from home, and we needed a child friendly site as we were joining my sister and brother-in-law and her 2 children.
When we arrived the site was very busy, but the warden showed us the best way to navigate ourselves through the tents onto our pitch which was right in the middle of the field. There is plenty of room per pitch, so we were quite happy. Although it is not c & c club policy to reserve pitches, the wardens managed accommodate my sister next to us which was great!
Yes, the site is quite exposed to the elements, but I can see it will be better once some of the young trees have grown, however it is a very well kept site. The toilet block is spotless, I would have to say though, that in the busy times, you would have to queue for a shower or use your caravans facilities as we did. We did not use the washing up area or laundry etc so can't comment on those. I thought the recycling not so good, I carefully split my rubbish to find it all seemed to go together anyway.
There is no play park on site, but there is a ball game area, and plenty of room for the kids to play without annoying any fellow campers!
We did'nt go to the Conkers Centre as we only really had one full day, so we walked from site on one of the nature/cycle routes which landed us nicely back to the Navigation pub which is just behind the site.
Lastly I would like to compliment the wardens on this site. Not only are they really friendly, and we did have some laughs with them, but we watched one of the wardens help some first time caravanners set up their van! We lost some important documents out of our car(wind blew them out) someone kindly handed them in, and the wardens were on the phone to us whilst we were en route home. It seemed nothing was too much trouble.
We would visit this site again if we have children in our party.

Access to the site at Conkers, from either the A444 or A511, 'in the heart of the National Forest' is pretty straight forward. From the site entrance a wide driveway leads you to an attractive, rustic reception, but at this point the positives make way for negatives.
Conkers is obviously a fairly new site and although it is in the National Forest it is almost completely devoid of trees, shrubs or hedges and therefore lacks any character. A number of saplings have been planted across the site but it wil be a number of years before they improve the starkness of the site.
We stayed at the site over the August bank holiday weekend and every pitch was occupied; unfortunately so were the inadequate male and female shower blocks. Don't you just hate queueing for the basic necessities of camping.
Pitches at Conkers appeared in the main to be level on hard standing areas but a little up and down on the grass. A big plus for the site is the provision of a Motorhome service point, well appointed and plenty of space
Would we stay at conkers again, yes we probably would, if only for its close proximity to Burton-Upon-Trent, but come on Camping and Caravanning Club lets have a shower block that befits what is going to be a prestigious site in years to come.

Agree with previous comments in that site is quite hilly although the pitches are pretty level. The wardens are very welcoming and were quite happy to show my wife to her pitch and help her reverse the caravan in to the right spot.
Locally there are plenty of walks in the area as well as the conkers site. For food we would thoroughly recommend the pub at the top of the site. Any pub that says on the door 'if you don't like kids drink elsewhere' has got to be good. The pub has animals like sheep and rabbits, has an indoor play area and a kids meal is less than a fiver including drink, lolly afterwards (provided they eat their tea!) and entrance to the indoor play area - bargain.
Only criticism we had were that the assistant wardens came prior the curfew to warn us that we were talking in our awning. Having done so they then stood outside the awning for some time listening to the conversation which we all found pretty spooky. If you like sociable chit chat over a glass of wine in the evenings then this isn't the site for you.

Lovely campsite with friendly wardens. The site was immaculate and the toilets and showers were spotless. There was a fenced off dog area where our two dogs could run about off the lead as well as loads of walks near to the site. The nearby pub, The Navigation Inn, was a bit dodgy looking but very family and pet friendly and our six year old adored the garden which was full of rabbits, goats, ponies etc as well as having a huge play area. We will definitely be staying at Conkers again and at the moment it has spoilt us for anywhere else :-) I have only put 8/10 for facilities as there wasn't a proper shop to speak of.

Visited this site as part of a rally, its on a little bit a slope but very open and as others have said a bit windy at times. As the trees and shrubs grow they will act as wind breaks.
Facilities very good and spotlessly clean. Very friendly wardens. Could have done with a few more leaflets at the reception but there was lots of info in ring binders. Not a lot of child facilities though.
The best part is the multitude of walks from the site to Museums, the Ashby Canal and various woods and lakes. Plenty of pubs on the way, Ok some full of families and children but there for refreshment in any case.
Ashby is a nice town with a great museum and Castle. Don't miss having the foot long cod & chips at the Admiral Fish Bar at Overseal its delicious.
Overall a great place to stay to visit all around the area of South Derbyshire/Leicestershire easy reach of Calke Abbey and the National forest generally. Don't be put off by its newness this will grow into a great site in the near future

Spent two nights here in our Conway Countryman. Wardens very helpful. Given a choice of pitches despite arriving after 6:00pm. Very good toilet/shower facilities kept clean and tidy. Nice quiet site.
We had a coffee at the YH cafe next to site, seemed very nice. Also had meal at the Navigation pub within easy walk. Good reasonably priced pub food. Has children's play facilities.
Didn't visit Conkers as it was rather wet. Lots of walks in area and well mapped out. Good selection of leaflets etc at reception.
We would definitely use this site again.

Nice site, though I would agree with the comments about it being a bit exposed - it will be lovely in a few years when the baby trees are more established. Friendly staff who showed us to our pitch and stopped for a chat whenever we saw them for the rest of the weekend.
The toilet block is kept very clean and pleasant. There are a couple of sink cubicles and 4 push button showers. Queues did form one morning but there was a group of teenage girls who were in the showers for half an hour each (!) which didn't help.
The whole block could have done with being a couple of metres bigger in each direction, as the cubicles were cosy and there are plenty of opportunities to make friends when shoehorned into the tiny washing up area.
We spent a day at Conkers (free child ticket with your receipt from the campsite) which we loved - this is the second time we've been recently and there are still bits we want to go back and do.
There's a fantastic indoor play area, various walks and trails, an assault course, train ride, animal shows, an outdoor play area and restaurants, among other things. We also visited Twycross Zoo, which is about 20 minutes away and great for kids.
A nice friendly site with plenty to do in the area - we'll go back.
