Was looking for a camp site close to Weston Hospital as Son was having an operation and we were only given an estimate to when he could come out. We live in south west Cornwall so thought rather than drive up and down the M5 we would stay close by. Did a google map search and came across Uphill. Looked promising but information stated that it MAY have pitches available during November (This was due to the fact that the ITV drama Broadchurch was due to be filmed at the boat yard and the owners were not sure if campers could be accepted)

As I had google mapped the location and did the 'walking man' I had a feel for the immediate area and the fact that buses use the same road that we used and that cars parked on one side of the road meant that passing in places could be tricky.

On arrival we were shown a hardstanding pitch very close to the entrance but overlooking the lake. It was very flat and we were able to get pretty level without ramps. Hook up was right next to us, so no need for a long lead. There were some other hardstanding pitches located around the lake but the gentleman explained that the film crew were going to be using that area so wanted to make sure we were tucked out of the way. (Further clarification to the fact that initially not sure if they could accommodate us)

They were updating the facilities so we were given a pass code to use the bathroom/wc located between the office and shop. This room was lovely and warm with a large bath with shower over, toilet and sink. Lovely hot water and towel provided to dry hands. It was also free.

We used our onboard facilities for washing dishes so can't comment on what was provided at the site.

Electric hook up price was included in the pitch price.

We were two adults camping but had we had young children with us, we would have had to be fairly vigilant as the lake is not fenced and boats were stationed close to where we were. We also did not see any play equipment, so I would say that this site is perfectly set up for adults.

We walked to the beach one day, and to get from the site to the pier took us about 25 minutes. Just outside the entrance (on main road) was a bus stop, but we walked up the road a little and around the corner as this was suggested to give us a larger selection of bus destinations. However, if you just want to go into Weston Super Mare I would guess that the stop two minutes from the site would suffice as the bus service we had used the day before passed us when we were out on a walk.

It was a level ten minute walk to Weston Hospital which was ideal the purpose of our stay and we passed two pubs on route. Sorry can't remember the name of them, but one did not serve evening meals. However, we did use the cafe you pass to get to the site entrance. Serves a variety of food and we tried their breakfast which was delicious and very good value for money.

Lovely bracing walks on the hill behind the site, and we walked up the old 'tower' which gave some amazing views of the whole of the area down towards Devon, across to Somerset and even Wales. Very helpfully the tower had little drawings that explained the view you were looking at. We also walked around the old church (with part of its missing roof) but were not able to go in as it was closed at the time. We waited until sun set and took some lovely pictures overlooking Uphill site with our motorhome in shot.

The only negative I would add and its really not a fault of the site is where we were parked. On the other side of the hedge, is a designated cycle track/dog walk with access via a wooden swing gate. It got a bit annoying hearing the 'clang' of the wooden gate against the post each time someone walked through with their dog/bike etc.

We would have no hesitation in going back to Uphill site again. It was amusing to come back from a shopping trip to find our motorhome surrounded by actors/film equipment/feed station and security personnel who had turned up in our absence. Despite the changeable weather (snow/rain/frost, winds)we did have a day when it was just glorious and we took some stunningly beautiful pictures of our motorhome with blue sky and former lime quarry in the background (reputedly mammoth remains were discovered and subsequently burried years ago) that when friends saw them they just could not believe that our images were of a site in England. It is just so beautiful.

Village was lovely shop not far from dolphin pub, site was lovely, loos a bit small but clean could do with a larger sink for washing up and washing out undies,

Showers were basic but clean only three showers available though but, take my advice make sure you have 20p for hot water in shower rooms or use shower next to office.

Wifi would have been nice as mobile phone signals not great due to location next to cliff.

Also sons would have liked to have hired a boat to row around lake, didn't know if this was available.

Will be returning next year for sure as was a lovely holiday.

The food in the cafe was very nice and quite reasonable but the shop was very limited on items it sold. But village shop was not far.

Over all would recommend this camp site.

We only stayed one night so we used the hard standing in the car park which was ok but was a bit noisy in the day to be expected in a working boat yard.

Having walked around and seen the hard standing further round we would definitely use one of these pitches if staying longer.

The toilets and shower were kept clean on a regular basis.

The cafe up the road serves great food and clean dogs are allowed in, make sure you book if you want Sunday lunch.

Two pubs in the village both serve food.

The beach is about 5 mins walk and is dog friendly and Weston pier is further along the beach.

At the back of the site is a great nature trail. Cant wait to return.

This is a relatively new site operating less than 2yrs they are doing their best to improve the site and the services such as toilets/showers etc, They ask for feedback from their visitors to enable them to do this.

We liked the site and will return.

Its close enough to weston for two 50 somethings to cycle there and back with ease.

We had one of the hard standing pitches

Overlooking the lake and can confirm that the hook ups have been improved although as mentioned in someone elses review a longer lead or extension would be advisable, pitches 7 & 8 nice and level + next to hook up right on the lake.

We had a problem with the leisure battery charger

And the very nice lady in the office put us in contact with a electrician who soon sorted the problem for us.

Nice scenery and some very good walks

Ignore the negatives go and visit.

We booked in for the weekend with friends and were impressed from the first moment we drove onto the site. Driving through the marina was different from your average campsite- already it had a different vibe. You can either camp on hard standing, or on grass near the lake. We opted for this and were pleased with the freedom to choose where we wanted to set up camp and also had electric hook up.

So many times you book in somewhere that is incredibly scenic, like the Lakes, or Snowdonia, only to find the actual campsite is stuck behind an industrial estate, or is as picturesque as a car park. This site is the complete opposite. There is a massive cliff face, with dangling climbers, a ruined church and tower, nature reserve land right behind and the fabulous lake. It doesn't get much better than this- sun shining on the lake, cuppa in hand and the clink of boat masts. We loved the boats- and the fascinating tide times. With this review, bear in mind that we had terrible weather- gale force wind, torrential rain, but we still loved it.

The facilities let this site down a bit, but we understand that this is being dealt with. Its true there is no washing up station, but its easy to boil up a kettle and wash up al fresco. Five minutes walk to the beach and a good Italian restaurant are extra bonuses, as are the two handily close pubs.

Final note, go and peer into the depths of the lake and see jellyfish and conga eel- hours of amusement. In conclusion, this was great, we really felt we were communing with nature and will return as often as we can.

Stayed over Easter for 3 nights. Great location with 2 great pubs within walking distance. Easy to get to Weston Super Mare - we used bikes and it took around 15 mins.

Electric hook ups being extended which will be great - we didn't use elec but still had a comfortable stay.

Nice and quite and the fact that when we stayed there was only 1 shower didn't affect us. We didn't see any washing up facilities but again didn't affect our stay as we used hot water from kettle. Not sure whether the electric hook up extension plans will include expansion of the washroom facilities etc.

Would recommend and would like to come back and climb Uphill Hill!

Visited this site over the Easter break, the site itself isn't bad with lovely views and location to the beach excellent, with great dog walking routes.

There is good room between the new pitches on the lakes side but these have only one electric point centrally located with the plugs for all four hardstanding pitches, so if your on either end you will need to position your unit spot on so your cable will reach. There are other electric pitches in the main carpark/ boat hardstanding area, these are closer to electric and water points.

Toilets mentioned in previous posts still in progress, current facilities poor, toilet dirty, no dish washing area, water points along way from the pitches even further from the grass pitches.

Access to the site is good but a bit tight if you have a twin axle, especially if your on a grass pitch, there is a second access gate but this is blocked by pitch one. There is no play facilities for children not a problem for ours but for others this might be an issue.

This could be a really excellent site with a bit more thought, its biggest problem is the staff, when we arrived the lady that booked us in was most helpful, but a second lady who we spoke to on the phone and on site gave us the impression that we were an inconvenience, we thought this was a one off as everybody has a bad day but by the end of the week it was clear that everyday was a bad day. Unfortunately we will not be going back because of this.

We stayed here for one night while trying out our new campervan. We didn't really see the site in its best light as much work was going on and we were restricted to using the hard standing pitches near the entrance.

The camping field area looks like it would be a fabulous place to spend some time as it is away from the main marina and it's hustle and bustle.

The work underway includes; extending the hook ups; new toilet block; new hard standings.

Some of the current facilities are a bit tired but once the work is completed it should be a lovely site.

We plan to use this site again.

We stayed here last weekend, nice and central to beach, nice walks and two nice local pubs, it also benefits a nice cafe close by.

My only down fall to this site, is the electricity meter that supplies the whole site, including the boats there.

There were three vans on site we put £8. 00 pounds in while our neighbours put a staggering £27. 00 pounds between them making a total of £36. 00 extra on top of the £12. 00 a night site fee, plus a shower was 20p.

The site is only 6 amp so we used the gas most of the time, we woke up Sunday morning with no electric so all three vans packed up and left
Management response: The power supplies at this time were only temporary and have now been replaced with 16 amp supplies to all sites which is included in the site rental cost, no additional charges to pay.
