Decided to visit this site due to reviews praising it so highly. Had a two night stay and left with mixed feelings. Upon arrival, was directed by helpful and friendly staff to a pitch adjacent to the site entrance, with a lovely scenic view of a massive electricity pylon.
Whilst reading the issued site rules & regs and personally observing the no noise rule after 11pm, couldn't help but notice the amount of noise / shouting etc till the early hours.
There is a bar/restaurant on site, but it is tiny, if you're not there when it opens you may not get a seat or table and may have to stand at the very crowded bar all night. I personally did not find the bar prices reasonable, however I accept I chose to visit there.
On the plus side, the toilet/shower blocks were clean, the showers especially nice. Be aware though the much advertised snack van which is supposed to visit this site daily from 7.30-12.00 was hit & miss Dont rely on this for your breakfast, as it didn't always turn up.

We went to this site for the festival. Expected it to be packed and it was. However, I didn't feel for a second like the pitch we had was crowded. Odd arrangement with the pitches- hard to understand map and fact there is little in the way of roads to follow once on the main park. Sloping pitch but not a problem.
As others have said the unisex toilet/showers did get very wet but to be expected in a shower room. There were however a pick of shower blocks and if the wet floors are a problem to you you can easily use others.
The tent area without electricity was just behind us and we had a few nights where we could hear parties and acoustic guitars past midnight.
Overall a good site but I think next time we go we will look for a smaller and closer to city park perhaps. The 11 bus route runs every 20 mins (if they turn up) N37 runs til 4.30am so good for seeing the city. Good park but overall I would give 5/10

This was the first time I had camped so was really pleased with what we found. After realising that people were not deaf and were not ignoring me when I spoke, they simply did not speak English. I quickly discovered the diversity of camping and that camping is actually an interest of people outside of England. Doh!
The site staff were helpful and friendly. The site was well planned and catered for every type of camping style. Everything looked clean; the rubbish was collected regularly, the loos were clean and well stocked and the showers had copious amounts of hot water and was well maintained.
Cleanliness of showers is really important to me. I did not feel the need to use thongs (flip flops) or to use surgical antiseptic on my feet after using the shower. There were quite a few washing areas which suited the bill. These were clean and suited me with my little bowl of washing up. Equally it suited other people who were washing up for about 10 people.
After torrential rain and gale force winds (and very little sleep as I was sure the wind would carry us away to the next suburb and I would wake up seeing tartan stars) we survived and despite the rain the pitch was not soaked at all.
There was ample room to park the car and space for our table chairs and so on. The on-site shop had the basics plus a bit more. The back of the shop had camping essentials and lots of holiday tat such as dominoes, plastic balls, action men etc. Love holiday tat as everyone can always find something handy to buy. That was good as I was able to pick up some games for the evening which I did not think to pack. They had loads of tourist bumf which was handy for planning what to do in Edinburgh but also what was available as we drove around Scotland.
Given the size of the site I was surprised how quiet it was – minus the wind and lashing rain. I discovered the wonderful free camp site map for the whole of Scotland. It lists just about every campsite in Scotland which is really helpful if you are camping on the hoof. This was available in amongst the tourist bumf within the shop/reception area.
There was no need to use the car to get into Edinburgh as the bus stop was outside the site. It was great that the bus had the campsite name in the front window. Coming back, I got on the bus confident in the knowledge I was heading for the campsite and not whoop whoop (middle of no where). It was also handy that there was a clippy (bus ticket person) who was selling bus tickets outside the campsite. Be aware – have the correct change for the bus if you are buying a ticket on board or be prepared to walk.
For a quick and easy dinner, we picked up a chinese from a shop which was only a few minutes from the site.
All in all, I would definitely come back to this site if I was visiting Edinburgh again. I felt comfortable with my 12 yr old son walking to the showers alone in the dark and felt safe at night with it being just myself and my son.

We have used this site several times over the last 5 years and have always had a good experience.
The site is very well positioned for bus access to the city centre, and the Stables bar is handy for evening meals, or for an end-of-evening drink if you've eaten in town.
In main season we've always been close to a toilet block; only when we visited in October did we have to use the more distant block, but whichever we've used has been very clean and tidy.
However, our most recent visit was noticeable for the noise made by other campers late into the night. Both evenings we were there, there were three or four groups who didn't seem to know the basic camping etiquette that after 10.30 or 11pm it is a given that there is no noise unless it's absolutely unavoidable.
We had a family group with two tents near us - on the first night, the kids were playing music beyond midnight; on the second night, the problem was with the parents calling to the kids from one tent to another. These weren't the only noisy groups, there were others by the 'teepees' and another further up the field too. No doubt, each thought the other noisy groups meant it 'must be OK'.
There is a security guard who patrols the site, it just seems a shame that he doesn't try to have a quiet word with groups who are spoiling it for others.

At £26 a night, without electrical hook up, this is the most expensive campsite we have stayed in.
The most off-putting aspect was the detailed list of stringent rules, and the threat that a security guard might escort you from the premises if you did not 'adhere' to them. Yes - we should be reminded to respect quietness after late hours, clean up after ourselves and not annoy other campers too much, but the wording of the rule sheet made me feel afraid to even speak out loud during daylight hours.
We returned quite late from a long day out in Edinburgh to find a mysterious red card attached to our awning, which we later discovered had the message that we must report to reception before 7pm. The writing was washed away by the rain, so we couldn't read it in the dark, but the 'red card' was enough to worry us. What had we done wrong?
We still don't know, but would you accept an order to report to reception without any explanation as to why?
The good point was that it was a bus ride away from the city centre, and all the information we needed was on the Map/Rule Sheet.

Spent 3 nights here - including over the weekend. Beware of your TOMTOM though - ours could not find it so we reverted to map reading!
One of the best sites we have visited in the UK. Would definitely use it again. This means it passes our KUMBAK test - only about 25% of UK sites do that.
Clean well designed cloakrooms dishwashing locations scattered around so you do not have to walk too far. Good shop and excellent staff.
Slightly sloping but workable plots. Good shop. Excellent bar and restaurants. Within City boundaries with bus stop but very peaceful and quiet. Clientèle seemed more civilised than on most sites and comprised a higher than usual proportion of continental tourists. Excellent site for seeing the sights within Edinburgh and around.
Having returned home now we regret not staying there longer than we did. One of the few sites in the UK where we would have stayed for a week or more.
Could not comprehend why it did not feature in the AA camping guide.

Spent three nights here, found it a very pleasant site, quiet during day and night mid week stay.
Toilet facilities good and cleaned regularly, some have been upgraded last month near the restaurant.
Pitches mostly slightly sloped and require chocks, pitch markers on all pitches flat on the ground so difficult to see when looking for your pitch, water facilities plentiful.
Handy for Edinburgh bypass and visiting city centre by car or public transport.Map of site very good and informative.
A bit pricey but would certainly go here again as good for overnight or longer stop.

Spent a couple of days here over the May bank holiday.
Very attractive leafy site though most of it is on a gentle slope and you will almost certainly need levelling ramps.
Toilet facilities are attractive pavilions dotted around and seemed to cope well with a very full campsite. The hot water is scalding hot and extremely forceful in the sinks, so watch out for that. The showers have nowhere to put your clothes and the floors get soaking - this has been mentioned in reviews for several years now On a plus note, the showers have thermostatic controls, so you can adjust the temperature to suit yourself.
Oddly, there are no signs telling you where to put your grey water. We had a fully serviced pitch so didn't have to work this out, but it looks as though it's meant to go down the drain beneath the fresh water supply. We noticed some people wheeling their wastemasters to the chemical disposal point so we weren't the only ones confused.
There was Rugby on over the bank holiday weekend and the site was full of Rugby fans. Check what events are on in the City before you book. We were surprised that same-sex parties were accepted and can see now why other camp sites don't allow them.
For travel, take a day-pass (£3 adult, £2.40 child) which gives you unlimited travel). The No. 11 takes you via the west end and princes street down Leith walk to Ocean Terminal (where the Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed), so you can hop on and off and see a good part of Edinburgh that way.
We'll definitely go back.

Very easy to book a hard standing pitch via email. The staff were very helpful when I cancelled Friday evening at very short notice due to the heavy rain in the Lothians. We arrived on Saturday and were shown our pitch with ELC (£21).
Campsite is located near for Edinburgh bypass for easy access with clear signs from the Straiton junction.
The children's play park is large and very good, my 3 children (2, 4 & 6) all enjoyed playing on the swings and slides. The shower block, toilets and facilities around the campsite are very good. There is enough open space around the tents and touring pitches to give the feeling of room & privacy.
The pub food was fine but expensive and a trip to the local takeaway would have been a smarter option.
The shop & reception closes at 18:00hrs and so does the games room and TV room.

Just spent 5 more nights at Mortonhall! We keep coming back here because, despite being a bit pricey, we just love it. We mostly go in August because it is a good way to see the Festival. It's far cheaper than any other accommodation at this time of year. We generally drive to any of the Park & Ride sites and then take the bus or train into Edinburgh from there, although, as other reviewers have said, there is a bus stop right at the camp gate (the number 11 takes you right down to Ocean Terminal too but we just generally drive there).
One downside to Mortonhall is the toilets/showers. They are perfect actually, but are ALWAYS queued out. Our nearest toilet block has showers/wcs/sinks in each cubicle. And there's 8, but it's unisex so if you just want the lav, you are better to go to one of the others instead.
However, the pitches are large, and as crowded as the park gets in August, you never feel crammed in. Our pitch looked right over to the Pentland Hills and was just idyllic really (once the German bloke left with his high VW van that is). A lot of the people from the Festival stay here too so they don't lock the gate, which means that there's no fear of not getting in later on. I like that! It's not a quiet site however, despite there being an 11pm curfew, but I rather like a bit of life, it's why I enjoy camping and it feels very international there. I suspect the caravan area is much quieter.
I have to give special kudos to the Stable Bar. In total we had our evening meal there THREE times, because it was excellent! The bar staff are really friendly and it's pretty reasonable. The staff on reception too are mostly made up from students I'd say, but they are great.Always friendly and helpful. As we were leaving I got a flat tyre (actually, I may have got it when I drove over a rogue peg?) and the staff were wonderfully helpful about that. I still called out the RAC though, because I think they'd been bitten once in the past when a car had got scratched by the tyre, but that was cool, I understood. Also in August (but only then, because of the Festival) there is a van which is on site from 7.30am - 11.30am which serves all sorts of breakfast goodies. I LOVED that! Best cup of tea I'd had in a while and I think it's a shame that they don't take up permanent residence really. I don't always have cooking facilities so it was a godsend and a great start to the day.
My youngest spent a lot of time at the playpark which is a good one too.
My parents took me to Mortonhall when I was in my early teens and it's always remained high in my estimation. I KNOW I'll be back there again! I absolutely love the place.
