Just got back from a weekend camping here. Was a bit dubious as it was raining constantly on the train up but the ground had very good drainage and was fine to pitch on.
The bus from town is really easy to catch and there were always quite a few other people going to the campsite so you knew where to get off it which helped.
The facilities on the campsite were really good. The toilet blocks were clean and there were loads of them all over the site too. Also the kitchen was a blessing as it meant we could fill up our thermos flasks of a morning and it was only £1 for 15 mins of electric in the kitchen. The cafe on site did a really nice cheap breakfast and the ladies that ran it were more than happy to dispense information and advise on places to go and eat etc in Edinburgh.
Well worth the expensive price to be so close to Edinburgh and to have such a nice site and facilities. Will definitely be going back :)

This was our third visit to Mortonhall in four years. Over that time not a lot has changed on the site and it has some great pros but as is the nature of the beast some cons, which could be sorted.
Pros - On a bus route (number 11 Ocean Terminal in, Hyvots Bank return) for Edinburgh city centre.
Easy to reach from the ring road, especially south of Edinburgh.
Cons - Expensive.
Wash blocks could be better.
Grass pitches poorly marked.
Lack of all weather pitches.
The biggest attraction of this site must be its ease of access either to reach it or if using a vehicle from the site. Good public transport links for those who wish to let someone else do the driving.
It is expensive for what you get, a grass pitch is £22 peak season 2009. That makes it more expensive than a Caravan Club site which would include electric and if caravanning or in a motorhome have an all weather pitch.
The wash blocks are disappointing in having toilet / sink / shower that allow water to flow along into the toilet cubicles further along the wash block. Coupled with the shower only cubicles being narrow even slim people have trouble drying and dressing.
At least they have a number of wash blocks throughout the site and the original wash block is looking very tired, but the newer ones are now also feeling a little worn.
Tents and caravans / motorhomes when sharing a camping field can through no fault of their own, end up pitching on top of each other where there is no clear marking between the marked pitches for caravans / motorhomes and the free for all tent fields.
A ring of all weather (that's gravel) pitches circling the tent field might bring a little order to the proceedings and provide much needed all weather pitches.

We found this site by following the signs from the Edinburgh Bypass. Good signage.
Stayed for 1 night while returning from North of Scotland. Large, well laid out site. Our grass pitch was a little difficult to find. Reception was well organised and friendly staff. A bit pricey!
We had a few drinks and a meal in the Stables Bar. Reasonable prices but not cheap.
Its proximity to Edinburgh is undoubtedly is main feature for most visitors. There were lots of visitors from outside the UK. The surroundings are excellent.
Downside - the toilet block! Quite grubby and a little run down. Floors were soaking wet all the time. Nowhere to put your clothes. We did only stay 1 night but the poor state of the toilets would probably prevent us from returning. This shouldn't put others off if the location is what they are looking for.

Just spent two nights here what a great campsite good service on arrival they give you a map of where to go with a pitch number but the pitches are not numbered which seemed to be causing confusion with people . Shower and toilet blocks really clean but showers a bit small great play area for kids plenty of hot water at washing up facilities numerous toilet blocks so you don't have to go far for the toilets. Shop on site well stocked pub near campsite not to bad priced apart from cans of juice but all in all I would not hesitate to visit this site again

Just spent 3 nights here and we had a fantastic time. The park is well maintained and is a good site if you want to pop into the city. The stables bar is lovely and very friendly and the site staff are very friendly. The shop is well stocked with the basics that you would need. The toilet blocks are clean and well located but are prone to flood when the showers are in use with no real place to put your clothes but that's the only negative. At £21.50 a night its a bit pricey but you're are near to the city. We Will visit again as its close to the city but its location you could be in the middle of the country with lovely walks all around. There is a small play area that's basic but would keep young children amused

Visited for one overnight as going to Edinburgh zoo on the Sunday. Campsite very empty - just us and a few others. Children played in park for a short while then went to Pub on site for tea. Standard pub fare - notices said quiz night on weekly.
Helpful staff and well maintained site. Easy to find and well positioned site for access to Edinburgh - campsite has leaflet detailing bus services etc.

The site is well signposted from the Edinburgh Bypass. As you turn into the site, you will see a garden centre on the left and Highland cows on the right! Booking in was not exactly swift, but all the necessary information was provided and we were left to use the site map to locate our pitch. During our stay, we noticed that the map and / or the directions given caused quite a bit of confusion for other campers.
The reception area also boasts a shop where you can buy essentials, pocket money toys and various bits of camping gear. There is also a games room and a TV room.
There is a mixture of hardstanding and grass pitches at Mortonhall. We were on a grass pitch which, as the site is on a slope, was not the most level, but we managed. The slope is not all bad because it affords campers glorious views of the hills to the south of Edinburgh.
There seems to be three main toilet blocks for touring units, at the bottom, middle and top of the site. The ones at the bottom and the middle looked the same, but the middle block was not in use. As Easter weekend was approaching and the site was rapidly filling up, this seemed a bit strange. It also meant that I had to walk the full length of the site to the chemical waste point, which I was not too pleased about.
The block in use (with the one open chemical waste point) had separate facilities for ladies and gents. There are separate toilet and shower cubicles plus a row of basins. However, the decor looked a bit tired, giving a rather grubby look to the place, although cleaning was done at least twice a day.
The third toilet block at the top of the site, which we were closest to, consisted of 8 communal cubicles containing a toilet, a basin and a shower. Therefore, the floor of the cubicle was always wet - not particular nice if just visiting to use the toilet or for a wash. If you were having a shower, there was nowhere to put your clothes and no dry area to get dressed. Indeed, if you wanted to sit down, the only place was the toilet itself, most of which had no lids.
The site is big and is there are many walks around it. The kids were more interested in the playpark, which had bark on the ground to protect small knees. However, we did go and visit the Highland cows and we also found the adjacent pub / restaurant. It is accessed via a cobbled courtyard and has an open fire. Patrons can eat in the bar and there is a separate restaurant part. We were unable to sample the food because, the one night we tried, the place was booked solid. Probably something to do with the fact that it was Good Friday.
Overall, the site has everything a family could want. Parts of it are starting to look a bit tired, but that should not put you off visiting this site, which is very handy for Edinburgh and the surrounding tourist attractions.

Have just enjoyed a break at Mortonhall. If you like walking there are lots of walks which can be taken from the site or drive 5 minutes and you are in the Pentland Hills which are beautiful. Lovely walks at Glencorse Reservoir. No.11 bus stops at the entrance and takes you right into city centre. No real complaints about this site except the toilet blocks - these must be amongst the worst showers around! Plenty of hot water, but the water is everywhere! The whole shower cubicle is swimming, leaving nowhere to get dried and dressed. Also a distinct shortage of pegs in the shower cubicles. Many other people we spoke to felt the same. This apart, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return in the future.

We stayed a week at Morton Hall. The site was very very wet. We had a lot of difficulty getting on to our pitch as it was slightly up hill. The vast majority of pitches are on grass, and are not to clear in the layout. The whole site seemed to have very poor drainage, but we could have just been unlucky as the preceding few days had been very wet, although a few folk we spoke to complained of the same problem. The toilet block was reasonable clean but showed its age. The dish washing facilities were ok although were short of hot water on a few occasions. The staff were very helpful. There is a very good bus service from the end of the access road into Edinburgh. We would use the Edinburgh Caravan Club if visiting Edinburgh again.

We visited this site in August 08. The site is quite large but they give you a map to find your pitch. When we visited the weather was dry but we were placed on a pitch full of troughs were a car had got stuck previously and the ehu did not work. The site could be better planned as caravans and towing vehicles were blocked as their only access exit was through our pitch. The showers were also dirty and mucky. As I said when we visited it had been particularly dry so I would have understood the muckyness of the showers /toilets had it been wet.
The number 11 bus runs on the main road nearby which is handy for Edinburgh city centre but probably not suitable for anyone not prepared to walk ten minutes to get to the bus stop.
