First impressions of this site were good, the staff were friendly and helpful and the pitch easy to find. However, there were certain things about this site that niggled over the weekend we spent there. Firstly the shower block in our field was split into eight compartments, each with a shower, toilet and sink. There was always a long queue for these facilities, and when I did use them they were far from clean. I attempted to use the main shower block one morning at 9am only to find it was closed for cleaning, and when I found a vacant shower in another part of the site there was no hot water. To be fair to the site it was absolutely bursting at the seams, but they obviously did not have enough facilities. Another small niggle is that there were not enough dish washing facilities. The whole site seemed to be geared towards motor homes (and there were some beauties about!) rather than tents. On the plus side there was a great snack van that did breakfasts from 7am until 11am and the menu at the Stable Bar looked varied and very reasonable. The site was very handy for the city with a number 11 bus leaving from the entrance every 20 mins (give or take). A taxi was £12 to Princes Street. One tip would be to walk to the previous bus stop in peak times as there were a couple of occasions where not everybody in the queue managed to get on the bus. On the whole I would visit the site again and use it as a base to do the Edinburgh Festival. Last year we paid £32 each for a dorm bed in one of the hostels, so camping was a much cheaper alternative.

I can't understand why people are so enthusiastic about this site: they charge for everything they can; awnings however small, small puptents with caravan (were even more expensive than a separate tent). Laundry machines were twice the price as on other sites (if they were working at all); site was absolutely packed, so we had to wait for at least 10 minutes for the showers, which were either not working, overflowing or just giving a trickle of water. Toilet seats were missing for the whole week we were staying there. The staff's only comment to our complaints was: "Can't do anything about it, hope you have a pleasant stay." So if you can, avoid this campsite.

Just back from 2 night stay at Mortonhall with our 2 young children and had a great time despite extremely strong winds. We stayed in our tent and received the handy location map as mentioned in other reviews. Good firm level ground which didn't bend too many tent pegs! I'll list my good and bad points although overall we really liked this site and will visit again. Good points: Great bus service right outside the campsite into the centre of Edinburgh. Well stocked shop & really nice bar/restaurant. Very quiet at night even though, being during the festival, it was extremely busy. Great park for the kids and nice walks. Bad points: Wasn't too impressed with the shower/toilet blocks, don't know if it was just because the place was so busy but seemed to get very wet / muddy, lack of toilet rolls, only one hand-dryer / no paper towels, little things but they could be improved on. In the tent areas everyone was driving around other tents to get to their own which at night was a tad scary when you see the headlights coming towards you! I'd go for luminous guy ropes! As I said just a couple of negatives but would definitely recommend this one.

Just spent the one night at Mortonhall this week-end. Although the site was quite full, the pitches are evenly spread out so you have your "own space" the site was also quite quiet from 11.00pm our pitch was slightly sloped but this didn't cause us any problems and everyone else seemed to be managing OK.
The toilet and shower facilities where excellent with the power showers being exactly as they describe ! The bar and restaurant was excellent with friendly staff and very good value for money with a three course menu for £10.50, beer prices were good too. At £17.00 for the night my first reaction was this was quite expensive compared to other sites we have stayed on, but considering the facilities and local walks etc that are on offer (Although we didn't have time to use them all) and the close proximity to the city centre this seems reasonably.
We will definitely go back and use this site again, hopefully for longer next time.

Myself, wife and 2 boxer dogs spent 2 nights at this site and we cannot wait to get back. A beautiful site with magnificent views. The shower/toilet blocks were in immaculate condition including a well stocked shop on site. You are also supplied with a large map of the site on arrival which I found helpful for selecting a pitch for our next visit. A bus service is available near to the site which runs every 20 minutes into the city. The site also has an excellent well stocked bar with friendly staff. Along with lots of woodland walks (for the dogs too) you cannot fail to enjoy a stay at this site.

We have just got back from a lovely weekend at Mortonhall. Given a handy map on arrival to find our way around the site which was useful.
Lots of level pitches although a few are situated on a slight hill. Pitches / grass / paths etc. all in excellent condition and well maintained.
Very good, clean, modern facilities with lots of toilet / shower blocks so never far to walk. The showers were powerful with nice hot water.could do with a peg to put your clothes on though as you have to drape them over the door to prevent them getting soaked! Also a free hairdryer in both men and women's toilets.
The staff were very friendly and there is a handy shop on site selling souvenirs / food / drink and lots of camping accessories that you might forget to take! There is also bar / restaurant on site (which children are allowed in) with friendly staff and picnic benches outside to enjoy a drink in the sunshine if the weather is good!
Lovely peaceful surroundings and nice country walks although you can also get a short bus ride into Edinburgh (we didn't as were happy to hang around the site but there are plenty of details about the bus times available from reception)
There is a nice play area which seemed popular with the kids.
The site is popular with European visitors and has some European staff which I would imagine is handy if you don't speak English!
The site was also lovely and quiet at night time.
Overall I would thoroughly recommend Mortonhall to others and would definitely return!

Yep really good site - only £16.25 for four with elec on Easter Saturday. Good play park - nice staff - good shop. No complaints at all. Bus into Edinburgh every 20 mins and takes 20 mins. Only £1.20 but you need the right money.

Great friendly site, would recommend to visit. When we were there only the main toilets were open which is not handy with 3 young kids but the site is under some refurbishment so hopefully when we go back they will be open. Although hubby said shower in gents is not great not a lot of pressure coming from them I had no complaints except I had to put my clothes on floor and they got soaked but a shelf would solve that. Great walks around the site we walked up to the woods etc. The kids loved the swing park which was well equipped with swings, 4 chutes seesaw and lots more
My hubby went to the bar on site and had a great night - the welsh guy behind the bar was really friendly and welcoming. Kids are allowed in also but I never made it up there. The shop on-site has loads of caravan accessories and was pretty well stocked with essentials. Will definitely go back again for a few days later in the year

Lovely, well organised site. Had frame tent and needed hookup for my electric wheelchair - lent me extension for my hookup as mine wasn't long enough. Ramp into reception/shop but no access to kitchen, laundry or games room. Other down point is that the disabled toilet/shower is open to everyone so, if there is a family showering their kids in there (or staff using the shower) when they could use the other showers, there is no-where to go to the loo (although there is other disabled toilet by reception - which I didn't find very accessible for wheelchair users - ok for ambulat disabled I suppose). In general nice and reasonably priced.

August 2005 I agree with all below - very peaceful, lovely surroundings and helpful staff. Because it was Festival time, they wouldn't let me pay a deposit in advance, but when we got there we were able to have electric hook up and there seemed to be plenty of space. Don't worry about the other reviewer's comments about the buses either. There are night buses at 15 mintues past the hour through the night that drop off by the site. The campsite helpfuly give you all the necessary info when you book in. Highly recommended, but watch out for the taps in the shower block - very high water pressure and I was regulary soaked from head to foot. Had a few cold showers too.
