We booked for 7 days for Holmsley. On approach to the site it is fabulous with the wild horses just standing and roaming around in an absolutely beautiful area.
The site is on a old airfield and is massive. Small reception on entering the park which gave us full details and a map.
Unfortunately there are no allocated pitches, we were the first to arrive of three families and the only ones with a caravan so was very awkward to try and drive around the park looking for available pitches. It is a total free for all and you can set up how you want. We decided to walk round and found best approach was to look for available free electric hookups. We managed to find a place that had two hookups and the couple in the tent next to them told us they were leaving the next day so could have their's.
In the end it worked out perfectly as we all faced inwards with the gazebo in the middle which was definitly needed cos of the bad weather.
The showers were lovely and hot, the shop was well stocked and our children had such a great time. The park was lovely and clean and people pleasant.
Two downsides are the allocation of pitches which is a pain if a few of you and the bin men emptying the bins so early in the morning! Otherwise great place for a holiday and perfect for exploring the New Forest.

We stayed at Holmsley Caravan & Camping Site in our touring caravan over easter with family joining us. I found that when I booked back in february I couldn`t find much information on the park ie photos and layout but read reviews on this site and was mixed so decided to book. It cost me over 90.00 for 4 nights with two adults no kids and no dog and paid for a premium pitch. Maybe I've been spoilt in the past but was expecting some hardstanding area for my van we were told we couldnt pre book a pitch it was first come first served. On the arrival day the nicest spot we could find was on grass at the back bottom corner of the site. The hardstanding was the runway concrete strip as it was a dissused airfield and cars were constantly driving up and down it and kids on bikes. I was just expecting more for my money and was then disappointed when I was errecting my gazebo on the pitch to use as a bbq tent as the wind was relentless, the warden came marching over and said we would have to pay 5.00 per night to have this up to which I politely said get (get stuffed) and removed it. My mum and other family members came over to visit us and the warden tried to charge them 5.00 to visit per car so they said thanks but no thanks and parked on the road outside and walked in However the showers and toilets were very clean and nice hot showers. Nice cycle rides and walks and horses close by.

A massive site with nice flat areas for pitching.
The walks and bike rides around the area are fantastic, and the mornings full of bird song, the evenings with owl hoots. The wild rabbits are great for children to look out for, and the ponies are so beautiful. Hundreds of wild blackberries grow later on in the year (we have visited before).
The facilities at Holmsley had just been updated when we visited this year, and they are much better now. They are very clean and there are family rooms to use too. The shop is well stocked.
I definitely recommend Holmsley if you are an outdoors person. You can spend a whole week just exploring, walking, animal-spotting, bike riding etc on and around the site. Wonderful.

We've just bought our first tent and decided to stay in Holmsley and had a lovely time. Our party comprised of 4 adults and 5 children in two tents and we had plenty of space to pitch in the plain heath area and the children absolutely loved it.
The facilities were kept very clean although there was a mop for self use in the showers and the water in the bucket was filthy so not much use. Plenty of hot water but we did have to queue a few times - even at 6.30am just before the bank holiday weekend rush!
Slight criticism of the cleaning regime is that there are posted times as to when the block will be shut for cleaning but we found twice that over half an hour earlier than posted they were shut. Also the family room is absolutely tiny - no room to swing a cat and when we went to use it a couple had run water in the shower tray for their dog to drink from!
Children's play area is lovely but the best feature is definitely the fact that you walk straight into the forest and there are plenty of walks without using a car.
We will go back to this site.

This site needs to look at the pitching of tents & caravans. We went with friends who were delayed so had problems finding and keeping hold of 2 pitches together, we were told to keep the required distance between units which we just managed but then someone pitched their tent so close we had to park our car in front of our awning blocking any view we did have. The ground was very uneven with big pot holes which when it rained turned in to mud pools Also the ground does not drain well so became very muddy under foot. Shop and shower blocks ok but the cleaning time should be reviewed. The site was kept clean which was good with so many people but the bins were emptied 8.30am every morning! The surrounding area is great so much too see and do and the children loved being so close to all the ponies. Bike riding is also a must. Personally we would not go back to this site unless the pitching system was sorted out.

After reading all the recent reviews I was a bit nervous as to what to expect from this campsite and I must say I was very impressed. We arrived late on Friday Bank Hols night and were directed to a number Of spare places to camp. The campsite has fantastic toilet/shower facilities and has a brilliant shop with pretty much everything in. If you want to be close to a pub then this isn't the place to camp as it is a couple of miles away but if you like the feel of being in the middle of no-where then stay here. Make sure you bring your bikes as there are loads of places to cycle, and a cycle to the coasts takes about 45 mins and saves finding somewhere to park your cars. The campsite wardens are really friendly and make sure any noise was kept to a minimum, but be warned the rubbish bin lorries tend to turn up quite early in the morning! The gates are locked at night so if you do go out in the evening make sure you get back by 10.30pm otherwise you might have a trek to your tent if you pitch up miles away as the campsite is quite huge. Overall had a fantastic stay and will come back next year. the bank hols weather always helps though!

Have stayed at this huge site before and will return again and again. We had booked 3 pitches and arrived mid Saturday afternoon on a sunny weekend - even then we were able to find a good pitch away from other people ( we always head for "Plain Heath" which is the area furthest from the entrance). Facilities were always clean and not too busy. The playground entertained the kids for a while but the best thing is hopping over the stile straight into the New Forest to explore and feel lost! Glow-worms can be found during summer - a great way to encourage kids to turn torches off. A really well organised site with loads of space.

We have just got back from a BH weekend at Holmsley. On first impressions we were feeling slightly panicky - we were delayed on our journey due to heavy traffic and the satnav directing us through Lyndhurst, which meant that the site was bursting at the seams when we arrived.
However, by sheer good luck we found a gorgeous pitch in a 'quiet' corner - I think someone must have just left before we got there! Anyway our initial fears proved to be unfounded, the site was great. Although it was full, the noise was within acceptable levels at all times. The weather was fantastic which obviously helped too.
Toilets blocks and showers were busy but again not as bad as you would expect for such a busy weekend. Dishwashing room very hot and crowded - usually had to wait to use this.
Shop and takeaway were well stocked and fairly reasonably priced - big queue on the morning for the fresh stuff though.
Only criticism is that campsites seem to allow big groups of campers to effectively fence off large areas around their tents with windbreaks, gazebos etc ensuring that they 'stake' their territory and causing others to make unnecessary detours to cross the campgrounds. I'm all for freedom but some people really do abuse the privileges they are given. There were more that a few cases of this on this site - but if you can ignore this then I would definitely recommend it. The surrounding area is beautiful and the White Swan in Lyndhurst do fab meals and they welcome families.

Love this site. It was my first camping experience. I bought a tent and took my two children. There were clean toilets and showers. There was a real lovely feeling of space and the great outdoors, with the horses roaming freely outside of the site (site is fenced so they won't chew your tent!). If you have children, you have to visit Moors Valley Country Park - there's too much to list at the park, so you should look on their website. It's one of the cheapest yet best days out that we have had. We also spent a day at the beach in Bournemouth which was lovely too. Definitely recommend.

Just returned from a long weekend at Holmsley, was very nervous about camping and had read all the reviews but was very surprised at how nice the camp site was. We managed to find a really nice spot, under some trees right next to the edge of the Forest so that we could see the wild ponies first thing in the morning. There are no pubs or shops within walking distance so you must take your own food and drinks. There is a really good shop at the entrance which sells all the things you need for a cooked breakfast etc but it's not cheap, although the staff are extremely nice and very helpful. If you want to stay at this camp site you must book or you will be disappointed. Although it has 700 pitches the atmosphere is great and the toilets and showers are new, and there are plenty of them. Camp site is very clean and so are the facilities, there is a little takeaway at the entrance, but you have to wait quite a while for the food and it wasn't open very much. Had a really great weekend and wouldn't hesitate to go again.
