Very disappointed. Drive up to site itself was lovely, right in the heart of the forest, horses and ponies everywhere and very picturesque. Then you drive in to site. The service pitches had no organisation, very hard to find the power points. Lots were situated near concrete areas, that looked awful. Most of the areas we wanted to go to were untidy and unkempt. However, when we went walking, we went up to the top end where the tent only section was and it was beautiful. Such a shame the rest of the site couldn't have been like that. On the plus side, the reception and shop were good, well stocked and friendly staff. The toilets/showers were fairly clean considering the weather was a bit damp. The pictures shown online don't give a true representation of the site. If we had known what it was like, we certainly wouldn't have booked it. Wont be returning. Shame because it's situation in the middle of the forest is great. Certainly not a 4 star site in our pinion, more 2 star.

Nice location but there are real issues with this site.

General lack of maintenance is obvious, my wife told me that half the ladies showers were not working in our block. I know that they wish to save water but setting the shower controls so that you get just over a second of water per push as well as being frustrating means that you have to develop a technique of keep the button permanently depressed, somewhat self defeating! I also tried another block and the shaver points were ALL out of order.

The provision of a dirty old mop to clean showers out was hopeless, used it once and the result was worse than before I mopped it.

There is a take away on site, but even in high season it has limited opening times, if fact not opening at all on many days.

The vehicle access hours are not at all enforced so you will be disturbed very late and very early as well.

My overall view is top prices for at best poor 2nd rate facilities (excessive prices for gas replacement and being charged £5 per night for our very small trailer is greedy in the extreme!).

You may guess that we will not be returning here.

This was our second visit to Holmsley, we like this site very much. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and weren't at all bothered when we asked if we could stay till 4:00pm in the afternoon on the Sunday we were leaving, as it wasn't their busy time and also were not concerned when our family came to visit for the day with their car.

This is a lovely site, we believe that its probably the best of the Forest Sites, it has electric hookups, lovely clean showers and toilets ( 3 blocks in total). Yes it can be a bit of a trek to the blocks but we use our car to and from so no bother.

The shop is reasonably well stocked with newspapers etc, they did use`t to sell alcohol, but no longer (shame!) The takeaway is a great idea and seemed very popular (we did not use but will next time!) The site is very large and sprawling and has a very open feel of the forest which we like, you can however hide away if you prefer in more tucked away areas.

The play area is excellent in fact our Grand daughter visited it on her day with us and really liked it!. We also like the fact that you can drive around and pick your pitch, no pitches are allocated or reserved. I should imagine that during the busy season this site could be really really busy, we however avoided the busy season on both visits, and we thoroughly enjoyed them !

We will certainly be returning again, we only live approx 14 miles from the site and we look forward to another week-end being spent there. Well done Holmsley ( ps the site can become a bit puddly if it rains heavy but we were ok, also we were pitched right next to the Warden Caravan with the dog and although it did bark very occasionally it was in no way a nuisance !)

We found all the staff very friendly and helpful!

The nearest village is Burley a lovely oldie worldly village approx 3 miles from the site.

We booked 3 nights at this site which was a lovely location. However we left after 1 night. The site was overcrowded and with 600 pitches anyway, you can imagine what it was like.

The 3m rule was not followed and tents and vans were just feet from each other. Kids were cycling and screaming through everyone's pitches and this went on til late at night and restarted at 4. 30am.

If you like a 'Butlins' type holiday then this is the one for you, but if you want a peaceful Forest holiday, go to the Caravan Club Centenary site just down the road (which we did) and it is lovely and quiet and very friendly.

We wrote to the Camping and Caravanning Club who agreed with our viewpoint, but were not prepared to recompense us for losing the 2 nights we'd paid for, so we won't be renewing our membership with them and will stick to Caravan Club sites from now on.

The staff at this site, however were friendly and sympathetic and I feel probably fighting a losing battle there.

We stayed over the May bank Holiday and while it was very cold we have a great time. I have stayed at Holmsley on several occasions and I can not recommend it too highly. The staff are friendly helpful and will pass on useful information about the forest if you ask them.

The facilities are fine and we all enjoyed the amount of space. My young family rode bikes played around the site and in general wore themselves out every day.

We cycled on the track which starts outside the site this was a load of fun and so great to spend most of the ride off road. We went to the railway cafe which does the most amazing hot chocolate I have ever had in the UK.

All in all a Great site.

We visited the site for a very wet and windy mid week break.

This site is MASSIVE, which meant plenty of space. We drove up a gravel track and found a spot to ourselves in a clearing behind the children's play area. The ground was already very wet, and we found ourselves covered in mud before we left.

There are numerous shower blocks, one of which we were informed was closed. I think there were six showers in total in the block nearest to us, three of which which were locked.

Showers/toilets/dishwashing room were scrupulously clean.

I didn't see a facility for freezing cool blocks, though I may be wrong.

There is a shop on site, we didn't use it, other than when we were booking in. I did try to use it one day, but for some reason they were closing early and locked the door as I arrived.

We had a nice bike ride into the Forest, on a track straight from the site, absolutely lovely.

The site is a bit off the beaten track, but there are a couple of pubs/restaurants in driving distance, also a sainsburys supermarket.

There appears to be a warden caravan behind the shop/shower block. There was a dog in residence who barked a lot late at night which was a bit annoying. Overall, the site is ok. Its not very pretty, but the facilities are very clean.

We have stayed at Holmsey many times over the last few years, however this is the earliest in a season that we have stayed (Site had been opened 48hrs before we arrived!). Therefore the staff where still learning to use all the new computer software, but otherwise normal warm welcome.

Holmsey Forest Holidays, like other Forest Holiday sites in the New Forest, is a large campsite on the north side of the old Holmsey South Airfield based around the old dispersal points, and so there are plenty of hard and grass pitches available.

We do find that Holmsley is more set up for perhaps younger families and groups with a large shop selling local produce, essentials and a take away as well.

Bournemouth and Christchurch beaches are a short drive away and there is easy access to the many cycle routes in the area. One reason we chose this site. The old airfield is self is also great for walks and flying of kites.

Only one of the toilet / shower blocks was open. Even though there was a couple hundred of people on site it did not seem crowded and it was all kept nice and clean!

More than likely we will be returning again later this year!

This is our third trip to this site. We love being able to see the New Forest ponies so easily and have the space for children to roam. The facilities (showers, toilets, dishwashing) are first class. The shop and take-away are also very good. Lastly, this seems to be the only site we've found in the New Forest that has electric hook-ups.

The downside is the lack of allocated spaces to park/pitch. It is a little frustrating to drive around trying to find a suitable spot. There are usually electrical cables running along open spaces where someone wants to pitch but is not near an EHU. If they would convert to allocated bays, this site would be perfect.

I have just returned from a weekend at Holmsey New Forest Holidays campsite. This late in the year we only had 2 open sites to chose from Sethorns and this one. Being solar powered Sethorns has too many trees, so Holmsley was the choice.

The site itself is much like the other New Forest pitches, however there are much more amenities here including a shop and take away.

My gripe is that Tent campers today seem to camp weekends purely for the booze up meeting up with friends.

At this site close to where we pitched our tourer we encountered 3 quite large tents going up close to us parking up their 3 vehicles too. During the course of the evening a further ten cars turned up making a total of 13 closest being 3 feet from the back of my caravan. The noise from this group went on till the early hours and at one point I had to go out because the car closest to my van started up and the occupant was trying to charge a mobile phone, thus pumping exhaust fumes into my awning.

Gates shut at 10. 30 pm but the amount of vehicle movement on site after this time going to and from from the toilets was heavy

My stay at this site was not the relaxing weekend I wanted.

Next morning my caravan step had been moved away from my door, that could have been a nasty fall had I not noticed going out!

We stayed at Holmsley at the end of August 2011, the last week of the school holidays. On the day of arrival, we were very impressed - it seemed like a well organised, large and spacious site.

As we don't need an Electrical Hook Up, we decided to go to the Plain Heath field, at the back of the site. It's a 3-4 minute walk to the toilets, showers and wash up but far quieter and more spacious than the 'premium' fields near the front of the site.

Although it was quiet for the first couple of days of our stay, on the Friday night it filled up a lot. Thankfully most decided to camp on the fields near the facilities and the EHU's, so we still had lots of space in our bit, but the toilets and showers were struggling to cope with a few queues in the mornings.

The children's playground is a nice touch, but as others have said it is quite small for the size of site and didn't have anything suitable for our 2 year old, except a slide. A second playground for younger children would be great

We tried the takeaway on site on the last night of our stay and found it was reasonable value and tasty. We also thought the shop was good and prices not bad, considering you're paying for the convenience.

There's lots of lovely walks right from the site and, although we didn't have our bikes this time, it's clear that cycling from the site would also be very good. Loved the fact that we could climb over the fence just 30 seconds from our tent and be amongst the heathland and ponies.

The ground is relatively flat but lots of molehills - and in fact we had a mole trying to burrow into our tent while we were there! No big problem and quite entertaining to see mounds popping up in the tent.

On balance, we'd definitely return to this site, it's the second Forest Holidays site we've been to this year and loved them both, for different reasons.

Holmsley offers 'easy' camping with lots of facilities, I'd think it would be very busy in the main season and don't expect loads of privacy or space around your tent, especially if you're in the fields with EHU's.

But if you're prepared to be further away from the facilities and rough it a little bit, you can still find a little piece of New Forest heaven!
