I stayed here in mid-June during a spell of good weather. Arrived at 4pm on Friday and pitched on a fairly empty site and went off to visit my sister who was in a caravan at Bashley. When I returned at 9pm I was staggered to see "site full" signs and the place heaving. Moral is to book and arrive as early as possible to get a choice of pitches! The site is the biggest I've stayed on (700 pitches I think) but a good number of facilities to cope. At peak times in the morning the hot water ran at a trickle and it took ages to get enough for a wash/shave but the facilities were clean, an achievement bearing in mind the number of people. I believe the Camping and Caravanning Club are in a joint agreement to run the FC's sites now which is good news as the facilities will get a much needed update and makeover. I will definitely return - a beautifully situated site and well laid out so you don't feel crowded in despite the large capacity.

We loved this site and will be back again and again! Tucked away in the New Forest but near to everything you need, lots of lovely forest walks with Ponies and Cows around every corner, and the good thing is you only have to go through the site entrance to be in the forest, so don't even need to drive out if you just fancy a picnic on the heathland. The pitches were fine, although we did have a job to find two with hook up near each other, rock pegs would have been good for the awning as the ground was very hard. Toilets and showers were basic but clean, and no charge for showers. The shop sold the essentials, we did not use the take-away. All in all a lovely site with a nice atmosphere, where you can get away from it all!

Lovely site with facilities kept spotless. Plenty of toilets although only about 4 showers for women. Nice big cubicles though. Good little shop on site selling essentials etc. The on-site takeaway didn't really open late enough especially on a Friday and Saturday night when you've just arrived and could murder fish and chips. There are some real nice easy walks from this site where you come face to face round a corner with the New Forest ponies and cows! Our daughter loved it here. Would definitely return to this site, especially as it one of only a couple of New Forest sites with on site toilets/showers!

We had a great time on this campsite. We went for a long weekend with our 10 month old twins. It was our first camping trip as a family. When we first arrived we were really disappointed as the campsite is an old army airport, and when you first drive in you see a lot of concrete. We were relieved to find that these were mainly all for people requiring electric hook up and as we had booked late we hadn't been able to get one of these sites. We drove around looking for a suitable site as there are no marked sites, and found ourselves in a lovely wooded nook. We were right next to the children's play area but, we did not find this a problem at all. The campsite offers a shop, toilets (which were very clean), showers, take away and children's play area. We had a lovely weekend and as the site is ideally based on the edge of the new Forrest and by the beach you can have the best of both worlds. There are cycle paths and walkways around the campsite and these were lovely. We never made it to the beach so cannot comment. Would definitely recommend this site and would definitely revisit though we would not go for electric hook up for the above mentioned reasons.

I only stayed here for a couple of nights with a friend and 5 children. Had never camped in the New Forest before. We were lucky to find a pitch in one of the more secluded woody glades right on the periphery of the site and were rewarded with ponies coming up t the fence to see us. The kids played in the forest on a rope swing/picking blackberries/collecting logs and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very quiet where we were pitched as there were only three tents in the near vicinity. The facilities were perfectly adequate, if a little cobwebby in places but this is the countrysde after all! Showers are great. The pay area is also adequate and, although the children started off by saying it was boring, by the end of the two days, we had to drag them away. Agree it is not for little ones though, no swings, it is more like one of those obstacle course type parks. The downsides - well only 2 really. We pitched in the trees and the ground was rock hard, bent our black storm pegs! It was also very dirtey as, obviously, there wasn't any grass, just dust and bits off the trees. It absolutely poured with rain the morning we left and the tent got completely filthy inside and out as we collapsed it. In hindsight, should have left the groundsheet down whilst collapsing it! The only other downside was that we were charged for a double pitch because our tent is bigger than 6 berths even though we were not taking up any mpre room than a neighbouring 6 berth tent plus gazebo. For the 2 nights it cost £60 for 2 adults and 5 children with no hook up. We are going back next week and having a hook up pitch, 2 adults and 2 children, only taking one inner and paying £69 for 4 nights with hook up! Overall, though, a good site but I expect it does get noisy on the open field areas where tents are quite close together.

Lovely location, new forest ponies waiting outside the site, and beaches at Christchurch not far away. Staff very friendly in reception and the shop and takeaway. Only down side is there are no allocated pitches, which means you have to drive around trying to find somewhere to pitch which wasn't easy on a friday at 6.30 pm, especially when we needed 2 pitches. The ground is not level lots of holes and bumps too. The showers are very hot which was great for me but too hot for young children and only 5 showers per block which is not enough for the volume of campers, some mornings the queue was outside. If you do get to the site late, be warned that the takeaway closes at 7.30pm and the shop closes at 5.00 pm ! Be expected to be woken early, they empty the skips at 7.00 am ! Other wise we had a great weekend which was long enough, I wouldn't stay for a week.

We visited this site with another 3 families in the first week of school holidays. On arrival (at 1pm) we drove around for quite some time trying to locate 4 hook ups (which we had booked and paid for) which were even remotely close to each other. In the end we gave up, found a space for our tents and ran everyone's fridges in one tent. The campsite had a lot of families on it, which was lovely for us, but had a definite "Glastonbury" feel to it due to the random "pitch where you like" policy, gazebos, wind breakers and lots of large groups of young people. This didn't bother us too much (apart from the loud music at night). The showers were hot, powerful and kept reasonably clean given the campsite was full. The only thing was that queues to wash kids started from about 4.30pm. I used the large sinks to bath my 9 month old and found them more than adequate. Overall it was fine, but we prefer a quieter site with allocated pitches and clear driving routes between pitches (cars reversing and manouvering between tents when you have four kids under 3 wandering around proved a bit hair raising at times.)

We have been regularly camping at Holmsley for 12 years. In that time, it has changed little, the shop and the takeaway occasionally have different owners but the amenity blocks are much the same.
We originally chose this site because it had absolutely everything we needed for young kids and a dog. When we started, there was hardly ever any pre-booking and not that many hookups, we used to just turn up, pay and pitch. You might think that you start out having loads of space but when the weather is really good or it is a bank holiday / early part of the school summer holiday it is very full and it pretty soon closes in on you.
The site is still great but now, I only use it when I know it will not be too congested. Forest Holidays seem to take a lot more bookings which probably restricts original style of the New Forest campsites. The facilities struggle at peak times with the sheer volume of campers but are fine for the rest of the time. Knocking pegs in can be a challenge in places, rock pegs can be an advantage.
Don't expect a lie in, if the local wildlife doesn't wake you, the site is also in the flight path for Hurn airport which, although nowhere near as busy as Heathrow, does have a few flights in/out. All in all, I echo most of the views that have gone before and will still go back just for the magic of star gazing on an inky black sky.

This is what the Countryside is all about! Excellent site right in the heart of the New Forest, with plenty of walks & places of interest to visit. Poole & Bournemouth are within easy reach if you want the beach etc. The site itself was great, plenty of space between pitches, good friendly wardens, good area's for the kids to play & good paths for the bike rides. Showers & toilets are a bit old fashioned & could do with modernising. They were fairly clean but could do with a good makeover.

I last visited this campsite in the late 70's, the hot summer! aged 7. This was our first major holiday since buying the caravan a year ago. With fond memories of my last visit and peer pressure, I talked my husband in to trying it out for our 2 week family holiday.
After losing our way (we should have trusted the Sat Nav more) we eventually found it and pitched on the dog free premium site. We did not know where to go at first as the reception was closed for lunch but the shop owner was, and continued to be, very helpful.
The site is spacious, and even when full on the weekends (especially when England was playing and lost) you still had have your space, although it was slightly noisier than the hear a pin drop in the week noise level. But nothing you could not live with. We were really surprised how laid back the rules were. Yes pitch a distance away, and most people did stick to this, but it was the things you could have up around the van. Like windbreakers, paddling pool, gazebo's, that we found strange. But again helpful.
Toilets clean, but we could not easily cope with the children as both under 3. I ended up using the sink in the washroom as a bath. Play-area good but for children over 5 I would say.
Area is good although Sat Nav did come in handy a few times, just watch the right turns into there forest though, good job we got a 4x4!. Shops short drive away. Beaches good with a lift down the steep cliff, ideal for the double buggy.
Good site for a relaxing time, and a car to see sights. Good for bikes and kids to roam under your watchful eye. But not good if you desire loud banging music and smoke filled clubs.
We will return to this area again, and probably this site as well.
