August 2003 Myself and the family come here every year. It's a quiet, clean part of the forest with every thing you need right there at arms reach, from hot showers to a mini-market. It has a lot of ground to go exploring with something different on every side. There are quite a few beaches to choose from that are both within walking distance and drivable to. This is one place I wouldn't stop going to with or with out children.

May Half-Term 2003 This was our second visit to this site, and it is fast becoming one of our favourites. I too initially wasn't keen on the open area that makes up the main area on arrival, but both times we have found lovely sheltered spots down near the wooded area. We also find that the non-marking of pitches works well so that you can spread out and choose exactly where you'd like to be - just ensure you take a windbreak or something to mark your territory! the toilet blocks have plenty of facilities, and the showers are nice, and both blocks were within a reasonable distance. The location is beautiful, just up from our tent was a stile which we went over and had lovely walks over the heathland where all you can see is ponies and more lovely scenery. Nearby is an excellent cycle hire place in the village, with a great choice of routes and the staff were very helpful. We love it!

End of May half term 2003 This is a very large site with ad hoc pitching arrangements ( which suited us) on what I believe was an old airfield. Having spent many childhood holidays at Holidays hill ( now closed as a campsite due to conservation issues) I was initially disappointed at the vast 'openess' of the site, however we managed to find a pitch just behind the shop which wasn't too bad. There is a playground suitable for younger children but our 'action man' 5 year old found it a bit tame after the first couple of visits. The shop is extremely well stocked with fresh bread and croissants in the morning. The loos/showers were fine and there were plentiful water points, but the rubbish areas were absolutely overflowing. The airfield layout meant that there were ample opportunities for our son to practise his cycle skills and the access to the forest for yet more cycling was on the doorstep. There are no ponies on the site ( a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint) but there were loads just outside the gates and being May all the young foals were just at the point of 'finding their legs' which was lovely. All in all I would describe Holmsley as a functional site with good facilities and I would expect most families to have a good time here, but if you're looking for 'the quintessential New Forest campsite' then this isn't it.
P.S. I would recommend taking a pic nic to what was Holiday Hill and is now the reptillary. Have a look at the snakes then don't bother with the trail but walk back across the green in front of the house bearing left which takes you to a looping stream where an old rope swing still exists. It's idyllic!

July 2003 This campsite is big and the facilities are fine. We were camping in a four family group and were quite limited as to where we could pitch. I would recommend trying to get there as close to midday as you can in order to get the more secluded wooded bits as there are quite a lot of roadways which you need to keep the kids away from. Good kids playground and shop etc as everyone else has pointed out. We had a good weekend and would go there again.

July 2003 Just had a weekend at the site. The site is large and there are no set pitches. Toilet blocks are good. Its a nice site. The weekend we stayed the site was full, some parts quite packed others not so. Our main complaint was the noise, esp on the friday evening. We had a group of 3 units pitching next to us at 01:45 in the morning ! there was general noise, music ,talking etc into the early hours on both the Friday and Sat night. Good for groups of people to camp together but take your ear plugs if you want some sleep.
We left Sunday aternoon and the site was very differant, loads of room very quite lovely like a differant site all together.

June 2003 I have just had my first visit to this site and agree that the facilities are excellent in every sense. However, this weekend was very busy and I felt completely hemmed in. Because there are no set pitches, people place their units far too close to each other which, I am sure, breaks all safety regs. (Someone pitched their tent so close to ours that their guy rope was pegged into my doorway!!! Of course, I very politely asked them to remove it when I returned from my day out!!)
I am absolutely certain that this campsite would be excellent at the quieter times of the year and will return when the non-diehards think it's too cold to spend a few days in the countryside under canvass.

2000-2003 This site is near to our home so we have spent many weekend breaks here. Our kids love it and are always exited to go back. The site is basically a piece of the New Forest with a wire fence around to keep the ponies out, step across the fence and you're there with the ponies. No marked pitches so you have the freedom to pitch wherever and take as much room as you like , great if camping with friends, you can have you're own private little corner .Plenty of showers/loos clean and adequate, small kids play area and shop- very basically stocked. Great site if you enjoy space & freedom, a get away from it all site.

July 2002 I spent a week here with with my two young daughters and a dog and I cant find a bad word to say about this site. There were plenty of hook ups so no real struggle for electric, there was a substantial site shop offering fresh food, toys, camping equipment and more. There were enough toilets and showers to serve the whole site with no waiting and the hot water was free and hot!! If you are not keen on the ponies walking around your unit you are safe with this site as ponies can't get in.
Overall this is a reasonably well priced site with all the facilities you need and I would recommend this site to everyone.
p.s the sun shined every day with no rain, which always helps!!
