Holmsley is located on an old air field and is ideally placed to explore the New Forest. When we arrived there was a bit of a queue for the reception and we were warmly welcomed by the reception staff who were very helpful and friendly. The toilet block closest to us was OK, expect queues for the showers (which were lovely and hot) at peak times but from my experience caravaning/camping for 25years this is part of the experience! The shop on site stocks all the basics, get in early for the fresh croissants. Sainsbury's is 10minutes drive away and a Tesco in New Milton. With the site being located in the New Forest the site is ideal for exploring the New Forest on foot or bike. If you want a site with a pub within walking distance then this site is not for you. There are plenty of towns located within driving distance with plenty of beaches to choose from. The site itself from what I could see does not have any marked pitches anywhere so expect to have to drive around to find vacant pitches. I advise if you are going away with a group of people to get there before the rush on Friday and Saturday.

We stayed at this site with friends for 3 nights. It is a large site which is built on an old WW2 airfield. We arrived early on Saturday morning and the site seemed very busy. Although we had prebooked many weeks in advance there were no marked pitches and you were left to just find a vacant spot. This proved quite tricky and we were unable to find a pitch very close to the friends we had come with which was disappointing. Adding to the problems many pitches were unusable due to being waterlogged due to recent heavy rain.
However the children had a great time, the site proved to be excellent for them to ride their bikes and they enjoyed the playarea. The surrounding area was very pretty with wild horses and a bike trail all accesible from the site.
The toilet block however was not good, although apparently recently updated they were quite small and never really seemed that clean. Unfortunatley, the ladies toilet block we were nearest had some problems with the showers flooding onto the floor, which was not very nice. It was also disappointing that for a site with 600 pitches there was only 1 family shower room and that was not in the block near to our pitch - this family room was out of order for the duration of our stay.
All in all we did have a nice weekend, but I won't be returning to Holmsley if I was looking to camp in the New Forest again.

I would not recommend this site if you want to be able to walk to a pub or village as its quite a distance from either. It is also an old airfield so there is a lot of concrete and not a lot of trees (compared with Hollands Wood and Ashurst) However it has a nice feel of being miles from anywhere, ideal for a quiet break and if you are bringing everything with you. I would say better for caravans than tents.

We regularly stay at Forest Holiday sites but this was our first trip to this site. I think it would be fair to say we were disappointed. We had booked a premier pitch but the pitching had not been managed so the spaces in between the existing tents meant we could not find a premier pitch. However as our desire was the picnic table rather than the electric hook up (as advertised on the web site we used to book) once we realised that said picnic tables were in fact fictional, it was not a huge problem, though slightly annoyed that we paid a fair amount extra to pitch on the same basic site as everyone else. The site itself is immaculate and the shop/toilet blocks are amazing, and the take away food though limited exceedingly well cooked. However the family room was closed for the duration of our stay, a problem for us as we have disabled children and find those rooms make a huge difference. However I accept this was because disabled ramps were being built. The ground was very rocky and hard to pitch in, and the views on concrete were not the best we have ever had. I think we ruined about 20 pegs trying to get the tent up! The area itself is nice, and we particularly enjoyed a day in Christchurch. However, past visits to other sites have shown us that we can have a forest holidays experience and none of the problems.

Me and my girlfriend visited this site as first time campers and wow! Having read reviews were a little apprehensive on the size and the overcrowding but couldn't have been more wrong. On arriving a very friendly lady addressed all relevant points and handed me a map of the site and instructed I could pitch anywhere. We pitched in the far end of the site away from the caravans and EHU's, the ponies were literally outside, the air planes others have commented on were hardly noticeable. The site features 3 toilets/shower/dishwasher blocks so there's always one relatively close to your pitch, and they were always spotless. There is a very well stocked shop even selling4 different types of pegs, sleeping bags and bacon, sausages etc. There wasn't as much concrete as I expected and once pitched up especially in a tent is hardly noticeable as there is far more grass! we went to Burley, Bournemouth took a trip to monkey world and was no more than 30 Min's drive at any time so fantastic for different trips. Being only 3 Min's from the main road to lyndhurst noise was minimal. This campsite is fantastic and I recommend highly and will most definitely be visiting again!

We have just returned from a 3 night break at Holmsley in the New Forest. I chose this site having read some great reviews on this website. The site itself was very tidy, and the units were all well spaced. The facilities were great - the shop was well stocked, there was a take away for the evenings, which we didn't use, but had we of been staying longer, I'm sure we would have. The toilets and showers were very clean and the water was lovely and hot. It's a great site for children- the playground is good, there are lots of little nooks to explore, and my children really enjoyed riding there bikes as there was plenty of space and large flat areas. The surrounding area is very peaceful, and walking so close to the wild ponies is amazing! Not far to travel by car to get to the coast, and there is also a sainsburys about 10 minutes away for any larger shopping trips. Will deffinately be returning to this site. We've had a great time - Thanks Holmsley!

Stayed here 15-17 June 2007. Nice site, spoilt slightly by the overabundance of concrete (being an old WW2 airfield). Makes the site look a little ugly, but you can find good pitches if you look around a little. Toilets/shower blocks look almost new, and very clean, although the first shower I tried had no hot water. Good shop on site, and reception staff very helpful. Our family each gave the site 7/10, and we will be returning (but will try and avoid the concrete!)

Spent 2 nights at Holmsley and it was excellent. The facilities are very good with the shower/toilet blocks being virtually brand new and kept spotless. Even though it's a big sight there are plenty of facilities. The shop is decent and the take away not too bad.
On site there is a decent kids playground which is also well kept. It seems to be a very popular sight for families with children. However there were no noise problems and there is a good mix of tents and caravans.
The site is an old disused air field and walking around is an adventure in itself! Obviously the best part is the location. The forest is all around you. Burley is small distance away and there are pubs and tea rooms all within easy drive or moderate cycle.
All in all an excellent site.

We went to Holmsley bank holiday just gone for a week, it was quite pricey at £220 for the four of us, when we arrived the staff were very friendly but we were somewhat surprised that they didn't have any booking system even for the electric pitches, we had to trawl round the site and try to find a vacant electric post to hook up to. With it being so busy you can imagine we had quite a scrum to find a suitable pitch. Once we did the site itself is an old WW2 airbase, the kids loved the wide open reaches of concrete to ride their bikes on, together with a good outdoor play area. When we arrived the ground was rock hard and I would suggest at least a couple of rock pegs and a good hammer. We had an absolute downpour on the saturday and sunday resulting in a large amount of ground water, check when pitching that you are not in a hollow as they quickly filled up, which happened to a few unfortuanate people. The area around the site was brill we were able to leave the car and walk into the new forrest, although we had to drive to the nearest pubs, there were a couple along the Christchurch road, a Beefeater and a Harvester, we went to the Harvester twice!. By far and away the best thing about the site was the toilets even though the site was packed the toilets were cleaned regularly and always had hot water, toilet paper and soap. People on the site were very respectful and we had no problem with noise and after 10.30 pm it was very quiet. The site was locked at 10.30 pm and if you were late you had to leave your car at the entrance which I think helped with the noise. There was a small shop and a take away on the site, which were usual prices. All things considered we liked the site but feel it was a bit on the expensive side considering it was such a big site and there were no marked pitches. ( I know I sound like a scrooge !)

We have just returned from Holmsley after a 3 night break. We went to this site a year ago and the kids wanted to return because they liked it so much. They have recently updated all of their shower blocks, also have a new family room with a basin, shower cubicle and toilet. Very handy if you have young ones. They were really clean and a pleasure to use. Shop is well stocked and take away did some nice food although the menu was limited. Hoping to return again next Easter.
