Visited Holmsley with my DofE group for two nights of camping at this site.

The site seems to have been kept tidy with lots of bins and drinking water taps available, which is useful when there is weather you wouldn't want to walk in or feet a covered in blisters.

Setting up out tents, we were given a vague area to set up in so got lots of freedom where we positioned ourselves. Unfortunately, the site has really hard ground so it was hard to get the pegs in (even though they were quite short). This might be because the campsite is positioned on an old airfield. It might be worth looking to find a spot where you can put in your pegs without bending them.

The toilet block seemed well kept and clean so was quite nice to use. The shower cubicals seemed packed together, not giving much space for movement. They were also on a really short timer with one temperature which was fine for me, but could be annoying for some people.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to explore much of the site or have a look in the shop.

We visited Holmsley for the first time this May and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend there.

Upon arrival, we popped in to Reception to pay & was given a map with the Premium Electric Pitches highlighted in Purple. After driving around we found a lot of concrete ground space. Fine for the in-laws VW, not so easy to pitch our tent on. As we arrived out of season we were allowed to pitch up wherever. This, as other people have described was a double edged sword. Although we were able to have the luxury of choosing our spot to pitch, we found that some spots had been wasted by people pitching in funny angles, or parking caravans blocking access to hook up.

The toilets and showers were clean but basic (showers are push buttons and open cubicle so clothes can get wet!). When we arrived one of the blocks was closed, however this wasn't an issue as the blocks were quite big.

The shop was reasonably priced and had a great range of camping goodies and foods. There is also an on-site takeaway which smelt yummy when walking to the shop.

Overall the site was clean but if camping you may want to take a footprint sheet as there were patches of mud/areas where the animals roam in the winter. A must if pitching a tent are rock pegs! We learnt the hard way and bent at least half of our pegs!

We didn't leave the site all weekend so can't comment on it's location in respect to pubs/villages. We went for pure relaxation which was achieved!

We enjoyed our stay at Holmsley but think we may try out some other New Forest sites before returning.

We have never been to this site before, but we will be coming back again. It was right in New Forest with lots of horses and places to walk our puppy. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and due to the time of year we were able to choose our own pitch, the site was clean and well kept. The toilets and showers were clean and very well kept. The main thing we loved about this site was theocracy and quiet. The only noise we heard were the birds singing. We enjoyed the fact it was central not far from great places to visit and we could just go out the gate if the site and we were in the New Forest and able to walk the puppy without worrying about traffic. It was so relaxing and we cannot wait to go back. Would highly recommend people to stay there and they will love it.

We have stayed many times at Holmsley and have always had a great time. The site is very well maintained with lots of space and a number of pitches to choose from.

The staff offer a warm welcome and are happy to help. There is a shop on site that sells great camping supplies and everyday essentials but there is a supermarket a short drive away. There is also a take-away service on site too which is great if you don't want to cook!

The shower and toilet blocks are clean and tidy and there is electric hook up and waste facilities for those requiring them.

The best thing about Holmsley is its location. You are literally minutes walk from the forest with great walks and cycle rides and of course good old den building! You are also just a short drive away from the coast and towns/pubs etc.

I would highly recommend Holmsley and we hope to visit many times again in the future.

As we arrived first impressions were the amount of concrete for a 'forest site'. Staff were very friendly. It's a large site, you are positioned on the airfields road side on to grass. There are other all grass pitches. There was a feeling of space, and even the odd child on a bike didn't bother you as they weren't near you.

We have stayed elsewhere in the NF and although this site less picturesque, price was cheaper and much quieter (perhaps down to the space)

Easy to find once past the caravan club site. Ponies wander outside the park, whilst rabbits ran around on the pitches. Toilets were very clean.

My comments though, the toilet paper could be better and I would prefer shower curtains. My shower was extremely powerful and clothes got a bit wet.

Great location for Bournemouth. Didn't try local pubs so can't comment.

My rating takes into account the lack of shower curtain & quality of toilet roll. Silly reasons but this knocked them down

This is a large campsite! An earlier reviewer said they had trouble finding this site but it is well signposted from the A35 between Lyndhurst and Christchurch. Carry on past the Caravan Club site and it's just up the road. The arrival was a pleasant experience and then someone showed us to a pitch. The grass in places is in need of some TLC but as this was the end of August, they’ve maybe just had a hard summer. There doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to the pitch allocation and there is nothing to demarcate one pitch from another. We had our FC’s door near to the boundary fence with just enough room for a person to pass and the step, but someone with a pushchair still walked right past us. I don’t like that sort of really and it’s for that reason that I wouldn’t want to stay here for more than a few days. However, as we were only here for 2 nights I could live with it. We didn’t spend much time on the site as this was just a base for the Bournemouth Airshow but there are lots of trees around, free roaming ponies just up the road, owls at night and there seemed to be an off road cycle track from the site into the New Forest’s network of cycle tracks. The toilets were clean enough but the showers are really nothing much more than a long cupboard with no separate place for undressing – drying – dressing and as such, the floors were very muddy and grassy. All in all then, as I’ve said, I would use this site again for a short stay but the lack of pitch layout would drive me mad for more than that duration of stay.

Stay Away, After visiting what should be an idyllic site, set on a historic airfield in the heart of the New Forest, with fantastic facilities, including free showers, an on site shop and take away, and the only 'Camping in the forest' site with electric hook ups provided, we are left wondering what went wrong after suffering our very own weekend from Hell.

There are the usual camp rules, no wood fires, keep noise to a minimum between 2200 and 0800, the site is even locked at 2230 to prevent noisy access and egress from the site, but these appear to be ignored by all and the staff seem powerless to address any issues. Complaints to staff are promised a response and you are reassured that the duty managers telephone isn't just for emergencies, but also can and should be used to make complaints of noise from inconsiderate neighbors. Mobile telephone coverage is poor so even the proffered duty manager telephone number is next to useless even more so when it redirects to voice mail when a connection is eventually made. Having suffered a noisy night on our first the Friday, and having to address the rowdy party ourselves to enable ourselves to get some sleep. A complaint to staff the following morning was met with promises of patrols the following evening, none of which occurred and more revelers joined our noisy neighbors for a further party on the second night. This time we were given a patrol during which time the party quietened a little only to erupt with full force again shortly afterwards. The following morning, that of our departure, there was no duty manager available and a promised telephone call has yet to materialize.

Our visit outside of the school holiday period found the campsite busy, it is obviously popular with some, but the management of the site sadly lacking and ineffective. Our trouble makers were local and knew a few tricks. Allegedly visitors are required to pay to enter the site. But we believe that our noisy neighbors used the following tricks,

One couple book a pitch and pay, another family member pays for a pitch, but sends the kids in ahead to find the first and then enters paying for only the adult couple. This continues a number of times. Another family members motor home then drives in and parks amongst the others, avoiding payment altogether, visiting cars drive onto the site full and are then driven off with just one occupant the remainder moving into the existing pitches, it may be the cars are parked in the nearby car park and the driver also walks back onto the site to stay with family members, but we couldn't evidence this. A real shame and talking with fellow complainers it appears that other 'Camping in the forest sites' are managed exceptionally well, unfortunately this experience has put us off permanently, our experience can only be described as horrendous.

This site is huge and I imagine could get very busy. The toilet/shower blocks are good although I would prefer not to have to lean on a button to keep the shower going. Also shower in an end cubicle to avoid having everyone else's dirty water flow through yours!

The staff are very helpful and friendly and there is a general laid back feel to the site. There are no marked pitches which is a double edged sword. It is great to have the freedom to pitch where you want but it can mean that someone else comes too close to you! Direct access to the forest is a bonus and the whole area is peaceful, quiet and beautiful. This also means the site is remote. There is a shop on site selling essentials but civilisation is a car ride away. For me that's this campsite's USP but maybe not for everyone.

Just returned from an enjoyable week at holmsley. Fantastic location for cycling as you are situated in the heart of the forest with direct access to cycle paths. Ideal for children as the site is spread over a large area so plenty of space to play and cycle. If you can manage without ehu then you should have no trouble finding a quiet spot. There are a limited amount of hook ups and due to the pitch anywhere arrangements these areas felt very busy with little space between pitches. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good shop plus takeaway but this was closed on our visit. We will certainly be back!

Mudeford sandy beach is only 15 mins in the car and great for kids. Also recommend crabbing at mudeford quay and the ferry to the headland.

Our family of four has just returned from a lovely but brief stay at Holmsley. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the New Forest and think this is a great site. It is well located on the Hants / Dorset border with plenty of attractions easily accessible by car; we went to Christchurch beach, Highcliffe Castle and Moors Valley Country Park. Part of the appeal of this site for us - well hubby - is the fact that it's a WW2 airfield. We did a bit of research about the place before leaving but there is a lot of information at the site itself. There's some dislike in these reviews for the resulting amount of tarmac (several other CITF sites to choose from in that case) but we managed to get away from the road and pitch under the trees where we could barely see any hardstanding. A large grassy area of the site (Plain Heath) was closed off, presumably recovering from a summer of tent pitching, however we had no problems finding a space, albeit not the flattest. We went for an explore and found trees to climb, a stream and plenty of space.

The facilities were great, three huge blocks each with toilets, showers, washing up room and family room; always clean, never busy, good hot showers and advertise their closing / cleaning times; can't ask for than that! The kids were pleased with the play area and it was quite central / visible so as to facilitate remote supervision. The shop was massive, well stocked and not as expensive as I expected for such a captive market. We've never done the 'choose your own space to call home for the weekend' type campsite before but it's a real asset of this place, especially as it's the first campsite I've stayed on and not been woken early by someone else's children. For a site this big / busy that's quite an achievement. The only downside is that with this you lose a bit of that personal touch but you can't have everything.
