Really enjoyable site, Midge season had just finished, the only internet was at the local pub.
Booked the day before arriving, as it is one of the sites open in October, long drive past beautiful the scenery of the Kielder Lake and forest, but well worth it.
Easy walk to the forest area and to the local pub and shop. If we were stopping longer we would have taken the bycycles.
Not far from the Keilder Observatory, however the night sky from the site (clouds permitting) is fantastic.
Only a short hop up the road into Scotland and back to internet land again.
During the Midge season there are Midges, however there are Midge reduction systems on site so although controlled they are still here but in reduced numbers.
Well worth another visit next year

Greeted by the most friendly and helpful warden, couldn't do enough a real credit, we were able to pick our pitch which we did, but it wouldn't have mattered as all pitches were good and really spacious.
The campsite was immaculate the shower / toilet block was spotless with endless hot water, the camp is the ideal place to get away from it all, so peaceful and tranquil, with endless walks for our dogs, the local pub was a 2 min walk through campsite next to the stream, where they served really nice meals all day, the staff were friendly and welcoming.
In all couldn't fault our stay it was so peaceful would without a doubt return here and recommend if you want a quiet place to stay
Only one thing to fault that's the midges on an evening but that can't be helped and in the camps situation only to be expected

Friendly welcome from the warden on arrival who explained where everything was. Easy to book online. Plenty of hard standings for non tent campers, well spaced out. Great to be in middle of the forest especially as midges hadn't arrived yet! Walks in all directions plus bike rides. We enjoyed finding Okey Doke in the forest as it brought back memories now our kids are at Uni ! You can go Gruffalo hunting too if your kids are younger.
Wifi works well outside office. If you are in line of sight it even works further away. No mobile reception but wifi calling works ok.
Easy to exercise your dog off the site though one owner let their dog poo outside our campervan! Maybe site needs a sign for those daft owners!
Lovely toilet block with rain showers i. E. The type of shower head not the weather ! All very clean. One shower has very limited space in the ladies so avoid that one if you can. Easy walk to pub though we didn't enjoy our meal there. Microwave well used by the cook ! Landlord very welcoming though and happy for you to bring your dogs in.
Close to Kielder observatory so great if you have booked an event there. Didn't get back till 11. 45pm so was conscious that it was hard not to disturb others but there is no restriction on when you come and go from campsite.
I'm sure we will be back again. Can't see on website when campsite opens and closes though for season.

Bank holiday weekend on the site, warden said it was fully booked but it still seemed quite relaxed and not overcrowded, it is in a really nice spot and an easy walk to pub and wee shop.
Lots of walks and bike rides from the site.
Toilet facilities very good and kept clean. Excellent reception from the warden - would stay again.

Lovely area, unfortunately the shower & toilet block was not cleaned properly. Dusty cobwebs across to the expel air in one shower unit, marks on the walls, only the toilet seat wiped but not the rest of the toilet & other people's hairs on shower doors/walls which were there day after day.
I do think when you have shower & toilet facilities, hygiene is extremely important.
Will not be returning purely because of this reason which is a shame.

Just returned from our 3rd camping trip to Kielder, first time with the kids. As always, Steve the warden was brilliant. Toilets had been updated since my last visit and was a nice surprise. It's not a huge site so can get quite busy, especially as it's a dark skies area. Fantastic location and the scenery is amazing. The local pub does a lovely Sunday lunch. Kids loved the play area and we pitched quite close giving them a feeling of freedom as the went by themselves. Can't wait till our next trip.

Just had a week at this site and we can't wait for next April when we be back there for ten days, there's new drainage been put in to sort out the flooding the site sometimes suffered from and there a revamp of the loo and shower block, work starting on that in November, the anglers arms is worth a vist for a meal or an even a night out for a few beers, best thing is its only a ten minute walk through the site and the village shop handy for bits and bobs and also sells calor gas, main supermarket a thirty minute drive from the site, there is free Wi-Fi near the site office and at the pub and keilder castle but moblie phone signal's very poor at best.

Sorry to be a curmudgeon when so many others adore this location, but it is not one I am in a hurry to return to.
The area can get very, very wet and in the past the site has suffered from dreadful flooding. A friend once described it as the Glastonbury of campsites. Much work has been done by this community-owned site to improve matters but it will always be a damp place in amongst extremely tall trees, with a river running through it, and loads of midges (even in October). We were lucky with our visit and the friends we met told us it was the driest they had ever known the site (and they have been coming here for 13 years).
We had an EHU pitch in the first section on the left as you come into the site. There was plenty of room, not too far to walk to water, but disposal services were right in the middle of the site next to the offices and toilet block. I would not have wanted to be on the EHU pitches nearer to the offices which seemed very cramped and close together.
The new Warm Room is a lovely piece of modern architecture and sadly shows how tired the rest of the site is. I am told the toilet/shower facilities are due to be upgraded; sadly there was no avoiding the ever-present smell of damp. We were told hot water was plentiful but the only time OH went to use the shower instead of washing in our van there was nothing but lukewarm water.
Did not see the warden because we were at a private event where the site was closed to the general public.
Absolutely no mobile signal and wi-fi was very hit and miss, although we were supposed to be able to pick up a signal around the site office. There is a payphone which will accept incoming calls.
We do not have children so cannot comment on play facilities but there is a river running through the site and you have to cross a bridge to get from one part to the other.
Did not use the village shop but had supper at The Anglers Arms. Decent 'pub grub' and well priced.

Stayed at this site for 2 nights. Lovely area! We did the lakeside cycle trail which was challenging but fun! Just wished we'd allowed more time to take in all the sculptures along the way. The pub is a few minutes walk away and serves good reasonable priced meals. The maze is a nice feature too. The site was friendly, relaxed with clean, (albeit), basic facilities, the only downside was the weather and the midges.

I can echo most of the comments from previous reviewers. The site is in a lovely situation, well kept and with friendly wardens. It is also nice to know that it is run by a cooperative of local villagers so your (very reasonable) site fees are benefiting Kielderians(?). The site didn't seem to be hugely well signposted (I came through the forest drive toll road - recommended), but that could be due to one of my many senior moments these days! A very short attractive walk through the site takes you to the (admittedly non-olde-worlde) pub and the useful village shop. A pre-booked evening trip to the nearby observatory is a really good idea, where real enthusiasts explain the wonders of the universe in a way accessible to everyone. Some reviewers have remarked on the dated shower etc. Facilities at the site but there are lots of them and they are clean, with a plentiful supply of really hot water. All in all an excellent site to be heartily recommended.
