Decided on the hoof to have our first camping trip this year - Kielder is less than 1 hour away so we thought we'd give it a try. On phoning to enquire in the morning, I was impressed by the friendly, polite and helpful man I spoke to. Arrived just after lunch on Saturday and, as there was no-one around in the office, we just pitched where we wanted. The site wasn't crowded, although further down in the tent only section there was a large group of families playing football. We chose a hardstanding area because we use our Bongo to sleep in as well as our tent and we needed to be close to the loos, having small kids in tow. Overall, the site was clean and well kept. The water in both the showers and washing up room was exceptionally hot - BEWARE! - but very welcome. The forest behind the site was the only sore point really - campers had obviously been partying up there and there was quite a lot of broken bottles/rubbish strewn around the parts nearest the campsite. This was a real shame as I had to cut short my dogs walk. Otherwise, the local pub is great - good food and beer, the village shop is only 10 mins walk, and Kielder Castle is close by with great attractions like their wonderful stone maze and adventure park. I will go here again but after the Midge season has died down a bit. Good value for money, friendly staff and fabulous location.

We stopped at at this site over whit and could not fault it. Fantastic break, close proximity to scotland. Tremendous scenery only downside temperature fell below freezing one night! But that's nature, no problems with midgies. And a great pub with friendly locals overall can't wait to go back, and at £10 per pitch great value. Oh and wardens very helpful thank's jan very helpful

A beautiful site in a peaceful, remote corner of England. Great for children and dogs. The facilities are OK but need more maintenance, there was only one ladies shower over the bank holiday! Cleaning of toilet blocks at peak time was a problem as was the standards of cleaning. The pub was a short walk and streams for the children to play in were a short drive. The midges were only a real problem once it became warm. The two nights below freezing did limit their numbers! The midges were the worst I have experienced - my son was bitten over 30 times in two hours. Jungle formula deet didn't appear to have any effect. The picnic tables were a real plus although were missing from many pitches.

Just stayed one night, site looked a bit barren when we arrived as it was completely empty! There is seperate area for tents just over the small bridge. We wanted hard standing which is limited and not well defined, so ended up at the far end of the site next to the stream. Some parts of the site were quite wet in late september. We where joined for the night by 2 other motorhomes, a caravan and a tent. Facilities where basic but more than adequate, found the showers to be OK, clean and hot.
Short walk through the site brings you to the pub which was unfortunately closed on a monday when we stayed, also Kielder castle which is a small hunting lodge with tea room (they do take away food) and exhibitions, also a play ground for kids. We then did a shortish walk along the dukes trail, through woodland and back to the camp site.
On our visit we found to it to be scenic and quiet and would stay again. One word of warning - I nearly stood on a snake (adder) near Bakethin Weir, which could have been a bit nasty. There are apparently a lot in this area.

We have just got back from a weekend at this campsite, and it is in a very lovely location. We found it quite easy to pitch the tent and the ground was quite good. However we found a few downsides with this site, it is in the middle of nowhere and there were thousands of midges, annyoing little blitters. the times the midges came out was around 7 to 8pm and around 8 to 9 am. The only other downside to the campsite were the ammenities, we found the washing facilities left a little to be desired. If you enjoy sharing a shower with a rooful of spiders above your head, especially in the ladies this is the site for you. I must admit the showers were powerful enough, but left a lot to be desired on the cleanliness side. Most women in the ladies side were just taking washes in the sinks, so if you are not keen on creepy crawlies, be warned.
The upsides of the site it is in a beautiful location, and there is a nice little pub at the end of the campsite which is great on the evening to get away from the midges... Just telling it how I see it.

August 2005 Just had 3 fabulous days here... but I guess we were lucky when it comes to the weather and the midges. Site is pretty near perfect; BBQ, benches, shallow stream running through, basic but clean amenities, helpful staff, pub nearby etc. but midgies / mozzies are hellish when the sun doesn't shine! They're no problem when it's sunny or dark but you really have to avoid being outside during dusk and dawn. We took citronella candles (50), mozzie repellant coils, intescticide (spray and cream), swatter and one net hood thing as a bit of a joke.... on arrival had purchased 2 more net hoods from camp shop in first 10 minutes - still covered in bites! (but kids OK). However we had a wonderful time, loads of walks, places to play, art / sculpture etc. Would highly recommend Alan M Gray who does tackle hire and fishing tuition, lovely knowledgeble guy who gave up his one evening off to help my autistic son catch his first fish! 01434 250500. Also Kielder bikes, friendly service, great bikes, discretely provided a wide padded seat for my wide padded seat - cost £40 for a family of 4 for over 5 hours! 01434 250392. Loads of rides of varying difficuly but a flat off road route of 6 miles ( round trip) takes you to the photo opportunity of the scottish border. If you're up for a challenge and not afraid of flying, crawling things then I'd say give it a go!

August 2005 This is an excellent campsite in a small village at the top end of the lake. Have visited the area a few times and this is the best site. There is a shop onsite and a village store, the toilets were ok. Very close to the castle with nice walks and cycle routes

May 2005 Lovely friendly site, warden very helpful. We picked a bad rain weekend and the pitches have very little drainage. Bar at end of site small shop on site and plenty to explore. A few walks and bike rides from the site. Kielder water 5 mins down the road.

July 2005 Stayed here from Wed-Sat. 75 pitches made for plenty space (only 7 other tents and 1 caravan) until friday night when the masses and 1 large group arrived. The amenities block (3 wc's,3 showers, 7 sinks) was fine but would be very stretched if the site was at capacity. Great location with well stocked village store and ok pub both very nearby. BBQs and picnic tables on site too! :-)
Perfect for birdwatching and cycling.
Oh yeah....MIDGES!!!!! Be prepared!

May 2005 Came here for the second time in 3 years and after last time it was with some trepidation. Tents were set up on Friday evening heavily overcast but no rain, Saturday morning was okay but the afternoon the winds started and boy did they blow, there was severe damage on the site to at least 6-7 tents, including two in our party.
The Sunday and Monday were absolutely lovely at times weatherwise as Saturdays winds disappeared. Kids virtually spent all weekend in the forest making dens.
Midges started to make appearances and are very annoying so take repellant. Site is nice and quiet but if it rains then this is not the place to be
