WET! Don't think I have ever seen so much rain fall in 24 hours!
The site seemed to attract water and with little or no drainage it soon became waterlogged and very very muddy very quickly & it just got worse.
The weather really did spoil the stay, we were planning 5 nights but gave up after 2 given we had used every last bit of clothing we took due to the rain and mud, but in saying that it is a quiet site, warden and his wife were very friendly and very helpful, if they couldn't help they knew someone or somewhere that did.
Shop opening was a bit erratic, but the village shop is only a few minutes walk away, though prices do seem to vary, bought a can of camping gas for the same price I would pay for a pack of 6 at home, so be warned.
We didn't make it as far as the pub as the walk way was filled with water and mud, though I am told they do decent food and kids are welcome.
The castle also is only a couple of minutes through the woods, not a great deal to it but some great walks for both beginner and experienced.
Site was reasonably priced, but would need to return in nicer weather to see it in it's full potential.
Midges were there in their hundreds and thousands, we went armed with spray, cream and a full sized bug zapper but still they came!
Would be a great little site if it got the drainage sorted.

Really good site, located in Kielder Village, approx 15mins drive down to Tower Knowle Visitor Centre and all the main attractions at Kielder Water.
We found this to be the best value and most traditional campsite around Kielder, and at only £10 for 2 people, tent and car we thought it was great value.
Consisting of 2 fields, one is full of electric supplies for campers and caravans while the other is waiting for tents! About 10 Metal BBQs are spread around the field each with a picnic bench nearby. People still use Disposable BBQs and gas stoves by their tents though.
Facilities were adequate - clean toilets, sinks and showers, small shop and a village pub only 2 mins walk away, next to Kielder Castle.

I cannot praise this site enough! what a little gem. The site was reasonably priced (more expensive on a weekend) and the facilities were good (the womens were better apparently!) all the shower/toilets are apparently being upgraded in the near future after talking with the owner (who couldnt do enough to help)
There is a pub 2 mins walk away and a shop. The only thing you really have to be aware of is that the nearest petrol station is 40 miles away! this nearly caught me out. But other than that great site, great area! well worth a visit! oh and as for midges. Yes they were there but take some citronella candles (the large ones) set them up and you'll be fine.

First night camping at Kielder and first morning waking to a frost!
Good facilities, friendly wardens and a great site especially if you are in to mountain biking as the site is at the bottom of some excellent man made trails and you can ride over the border into Scotland - all off road.
We plan to stay again soon and do battle with the famous midgies.

We stay at this site every April as it is literally on the doorstep of the Kielder stages on the Pirelli International Rally. The site is always clean and tidy, the toilet and shower block we have always found to be spotless with a plentiful supply of free hot water. The warden is brilliant, if we have a very early start on our last day, which is frequent, she is happy for us to leave the tent pitched until we are finished in the forest, which can be as late as 5 or 6 pm. The only criticisms are that the on-site shop is a little limited, and if it is wet watch for the mud!

From the very phone call booking this site the managers were friendly & helpful. This continued over our stay with a nice friendly & chatty lady who was managing the site who seemed to never stop cleaning, picking up litter etc etc. Toilets clean, plenty hot water. The site was not too crowded, but due to heavy rain was literally deep in mud. Cars could not drive on the grass & there is a central track which cars had parked along the side and turned the edges into mud up to 1ft deep in places. We drive a Landrover, so it was not a problem for us, but some cars had managed to get themselves stuck (which was obviously going to happen, so their own fault) - However, you've got to ask why it seems every camp site in the UK is built on undrained fields - when even pasture fields have under soil draining in modern times! Anyway, the site is lovely and scenic with a stream along one side and the forest on the other, and the prices, considering showers etc are all in, are very reasonable. Ideally placed for all of the Kielder area (incidentally,Kielder was recently voted the most tranquil place in England!). Wildlife abounds around the site, and even the sky at night is FULL of stars due to no light pollution (in fact an observatory is being built in the forest right now because of that very reason), owls hooting at night, ducks round at breakfast time to see if anything was on the go etc - wonderful. Downside is that we had noisy folks coming back from the pub long the central track through the site - woke us up each night. Speaking to other users who had been before, this gets very bad at weekends and we were told that on Bank Holiday weekends they get influxes of weekend campers who get totally drunk and shout & scream into the early hours (the police have even had to attend before!) From what I gather, we were lucky as regards the noise as it's normally worse. This is a shame given the hard work we saw being put into maintaining the site, and would be resolved if a zero tolerance approach was taken over a period of time - it can be done. Overall, we liked the site, but not being woken up each night around midnight & later, and would not go back because of that - which is a shame given how nice the site is, how helpful and hard working the managers are and the excellent location. The usual complaint is of midges - we took DEET and fly spray and only had the odd bite, nothing too severe - just nuke 'em and they can't bite you!

We had an excellent family break 3 days here. The toilets and showers are spot on always had hot water and kept clean and tidy. There was very little noise after 10pm. Bbqs on some pitches, easy access roads in and out of camp site. Local facilities are good, the local pub has funny opening hours but good food and kids welcome. Warden was very helpful after we left the cooler box plugged in all night and flattened our battery(DOH !) she helped us out with jump leads. All in all if you can live with the midges a great little site to stay at.

Just arrived home from a two night stay. We were with another 3 families, helpful Warden managed to get us pitched together. Had a pitch with electric, which was an extra £6 per night (which we thought was expensive compared to other sites we have visited). Picnic tables next to pitches and BBQ which were handy. Showers, toilets, washing facilities were basic and although I understand there are lots of insects etc I (and the rest of of our party) felt that the general level of cleanliness could have been improved. Very small shop with a few basics, drinks, ice creams etc. The site itself was in a nice location, peaceful and great for exploring e.g. Walking and biking. The only thing that spoilt our evenings were the midges, we had been warned but never expected them to be so bad. We had to sit in our tents as we were been eaten alive!

We booked this site as we visited August Bank Holiday weekend. We found the site to be well run with friendly staff and good facilities. The toilets and showers were well maintained and there was plenty of hot water. There are some excellent walks around for walkers of all abilities. Early risers will see a wealth of wild animals and at night when the sky is clear the stars are unbelievable. A ride on the boat around Kielder Water is very relaxing and informative. The site is ideally located for exploring the less known areas of Northumberland. No hesitation in going back again

Nice site with helpful warden. Lovely valley location close to Kielder water but not completely marooned in the middle of nowhere, also easy to find. Wouldn't imagine the attraction for children on site. Great value at £10, would deffo go back and recommend it to others.
