I have been to Kielder campsite on eight separate occasions - six for the Starcamp and twice with my family.
Pros: reasonably priced, lots of hard standing, superb location close to nature and walks, Anglers Arms Pub, good Cafe and shop within 5 mins walk, maze, visitor centre and bike hire nearby, several playgrounds for kids - one on site, one at Kielder Castle nearby, one at village and several more at Leaplish Waterside park, spacious pitches, ample electric hook up pitches
Cons: wash block a bit basic with broken toilet doors, EHU pitches flood easily (beware!), new warden seemed quite laid back compared to previous warden and there were stereos, dogs wandering off leads and a fair bit of noise after 10pm, lots of midges between June and September

Just spent a fantastic 3 nights over the Bank Hol weekend in Kielder. We came here a few years ago and had such a great time we had to come back.
Kielder itself is fantastic (we did several mountain bike trails and hikes, seeing an osprey and red squirrel!) and this campsite is ideally located.
At the far end of the campsite is a little path and its literally 2 minutes walk to a lovely pub, The Anglers Arms, we ate here, well worth a visit but do book your table in the restaurant when you first arrive, and 5 minutes walk up a hill to Kielder Castle. Here there is a cafe, maze and the start of several walks and cycle routes. You can also get straight on the lakeside way here. There is a little shop in Kielder village, about 10 min walk but this is not open in the evening.
The campsite itself is basic but has everything you need. Three showers in the ladies (I assume also in the gents!), 2 plug sockets in the ladies for your hairdryer (This is essential for me!) showers were hot and the washing facilities were clean apart from muddy floors (it was pretty wet whilst we were there). There are 3 sinks for your washing up, a laundry room with washers and dryers and a hosepipe so you can give your bikes a quick clean.
There is a mini shop in the campsite office selling basics like ice lollies and tea bags. We had a small problem whilst there and Carl the campsite manager was happy to help. We don't have kids but if you do there is a baby change and quite a decent little park.

We stopped in a Pod one night on a lightweight bikepacker tour. Perfect not having to carry our tent only sleeping bags and mats. Tranquillity is the order of the day. The shower block is a bit dated but is clean with free unlimited showers and spotless toilets. The lad in charge is a good sort who seems to have found his dream job which comes through in his enthusiasm for the place.
The food at the Anglers arms the local pub which is a 5 minute walk from the site was plentiful and good, we both ordered Kielder cobbler steak and ale pie which after a 60 mile ride was the biz, we couldn't eat a dessert. Rather than carry heavy food items for miles I rang them who ordered the groceries from the local shop which were left for us at reception at no extra cost.
Kielder is fantastic place for the outdoors types on every level, walkers, MTBers, orienteers and people trying to exhaust the children this place has it all. We will be incorporating this site on our bikepacker tours from now on. Riding back to Tyneside was a real pleasure through that rugged Northumbrian landscape.

Originally planned to camp at this site after a night at the Observatory which is close-by (not walking distance on a cold dark night!) Thankfully, a camping pod was available as this was the first night of snow for the winter. Lady in the office was very pleasant and helpful, allowing us loan of her foot pump when ours wouldn't work. An idyllic spot for anyone wanting to get away from it all.
The pods are great. We were nice and dry, if not a little chilled to the bone - but what can you expect in October in Northumberland. Not much in the way of facilities near-by, so if like us you're desperate for a glass of wine after a night looking at the stars, make sure you take it with you.
Can't really comment on the facilities as it was too cold to take your clothes off to shower - so it was a quick lick in the morning for us and off home again!
Would definitely come back again in the winter as it was simply magical - no moon, just a sky full of stars.

We stayed for two months on the campsite as we were working in the area.
I really enjoyed our stay at the campsite as the ladies who run it are extremely helpful and friendly making it a very pleasant stay. The ladies shower at the far right is brilliant, it is very strong and warm, it outdoes most showers in campsites.
The pods are a great place to stay to keep dry and stay out of the midgies but still feel like your camping in a more upmarket way.
The location is good for going for walks, running and the mountain bike tracks are very good.
There are raspberry bushes very near the campsite which when in season produce lots of raspberries, good for breakfast.
The lake is very pretty.
Thank you for making our stay enjoyable.

This is the 3rd year we have visited this site. First time in tent, second in a campervan, third time in a caravan.
Staff were great every time. You just park up and pay later if no one is around.
Facilities are great and clean. Pub just along track. Great food and dog friendly, staff very friendly. Walks great for dogs.
Will be back again in September. Allergy relief and insect repellent needed when it has been raining, because of midges.

There were really friendly and helpful staff at this site. It is a beautiful spot with lots to do in the area. T
he facilities were clean and well maintained. There are a few things for sale in the reception area; snacks, drinks etc. The stream runs through the site and it is lovely to hear the running water.
If visiting this beautiful area again, I would make sure I took insect repellent as the midges were a problem for us.

The staff couldn't have been nicer. The showers were lovely and hot and power showers but no seats/stools in there - Health & safety I was told! The walk around the reservoir was lovely, especially for the dogs. The public art was great. Freya's hut made me cry - such a sad story!
Leaplish Waterside Pk was okay, a bit overpriced and some of it was rather neglected (the map mini golf course), no boats running when we were there. The Birds of Prey Centre was really excellent, and one of the wallabies there had a large joey hanging out of its pouch -so sweet.
BUT the midges ruined the whole experience for us. Now the constant biting is bad enough (advice- keep moving) but 24 hours later I was covered in what looked like chicken pox!
The midges were the talk of the ladies shower block! Okay so my husband doesn't react to their bites like I do, but even he felt they put the damper on our time there. So whilst the site is fine, we wouldn't go back again.

Just returned from a two night break at Kielder. We (two adults and 2 children aged 5 and almost 2). We had a fantastic time, lovely friendly site, we had electric hook up, but were told we could pitch any where we liked, great to be able to pick our own pitch.
Basic toilet/shower block but with plenty of free very hot water, and no puch button so shower could last as long as you liked. Three showers in ladies, never had to queue.
Dish washing facilities were in doors again with plenty of hot water and right next to the play park, so 5 year old loved coming to do the pots so she could play on the park!
Also have laundry facilities, although we didn't need to use, but great if you've been soaked while out walking/biking.
Lots to do around about, great campsite which we will be returning to for a weekend break. And it's only an hours drive.

Just spent 2 nights here wish it could have been more but work beckons.
Great little campsite, we had the site to ourselves no one there.
The showers and toilets were clean and nice hot water free of charge.
Ideal if you want a quiet break and no 3 network so ideal if you don't want to be contacted.
Lots to do in the community locals are friendly.
The site manager was very chatty and nice to talk to.
Plenty of hookups laundry room and wash dishes room, a line to hang laundry on, shop is good, child's play area available,
Hope to come back soon.
