Well where do I start ! My partner and myself are fairly new to the camping scene and came across this site and studied its reviews of various sites! Didn't want to travel to far from home as our equipment was all new to us. So we chose kielder caravan and camping ! We found this site a real bargain nice clean open land, small shop with limited stock but the manager was a real star ! Cheerful, chatty, willing to help. Everything in his shop was reasonably priced with a pub just at the end of the campsite within staggering distance. The wardens emphasise this is a family site and sticks by his guns no loud music or drunken disorderly yobs as we witnessed during our stay when some arrived and were quickly removed! Fantastic weather as said in other reviews only downfall was the midgies, showers and toilets on site cleaned daily. I'd definitely go back armed with bug repellent

This site looked ideal for us as we wanted to cycle the Lakeside Way and indeed when we arrived, it was warm and sunny!
However, the warden warned us that as the evening approached, the midges would descend. Sure enough, we noticed that the other campers on the site all disappeared at the same time.
The next day was raining and as we set off for our ride, we thought we would be safe from the offending midges - not so - it was quite warm and as we stopped to mend a puncture about 2 miles into the ride, the midges descended and inflicted considerable damage on my OH, despite spray and insect repellent bands he was seriously bitten.
However, that aside, the warden told us that July - Sept are the worst months so if you visited outside these months, you should be OK!
As we had our own facilities on board, I can't comment on those at the site but I must endorse what other reviewers have said about the wardens - very helpful and friendly.
Kielder is brilliant for all levels of cyclists and there's lots to do in the forest - but not for us!

Visited this lovely little site on the last weekend in June, the site itself is fantastic and the wardens are incredibly helpful and friendly.
We were first time campers and found the facilities were very good, the little shop was sensibly stocked with items you would actually need.
The toilets and showers were clean and there are dishwashing and clothes washing facilities, there is also a payphone which is handy as there is no mobile signal - not that I wanted to communicate with the outside world anyway!
The local pub is found down the track that runs through the campsite, friendly place but as it's the only one on the area it's not cheap!
Now the down side - midges! I really should have known better when I rang to book and the female warden told me to bring lots of midge spray! I'm not just being soft about a few flying insects - I have lived in southern Africa and seen smaller locust swarms! They were so bad that we left as soon as we possibly could the following morning not even bothering with breakfast.
However according to the National Trust warden that I talked to in the pub this is only really the case between June and September so if you are planning a trip outside of these dates then I would recommend this nice little site!

Excellent site we were given a warm welcome. Site was surprisingly dry considering how wet it had been. Toilet block was a bit dated but it was kept clean which you sometimes don't get at bigger sites. The no noise policy was kept to with the warden doing patrols which is great when you have kids. Kielder reservoir is a great place to go with plenty to do the pub meals are very good and not to pricey. The village has a well stocked shop and only 5min walk from the site. The anglers inn at the end of the site was nice but no dogs so we ate outside and the midges ate us. Overall good site well kept and at £20 a night good value.

We have just returned from this lovely little camp site and really enjoyed our holiday! We actually could not fault the site at all. At £8 per night on a weeknight for a 2 man tent (it's 12£ per night for 3 man+), it worked out very cheap compared to other camp sites.
As we were there Sunday and Monday night, it was very quiet and we had much of the site to ourselves. As we like peace, quiet and seclusion, this time was perfect for us. There was no noise, in fact it is a camp rule that no noise should be made after 10:30pm, and they do check.
The site has male and female toilets with hot water, two hot showers each and laundry and dishwashing facilities (for a fee). The Wardens cabin is also home to a small, very basic shop. About five minutes walk brings you to the local pub (closed on Mondays!) and the village shop is a little further (9 - 5:30 on a weekday).
The only downside is the Midges, who came out in their millions as soon as the sun started going down and stuck around until it started to get dark. The Citronella candle was of no use whatsoever unless you chased individual midges with it. We did take Boots own brand insect repellent with 50% DEET, and this kept us bite free for the duration of the stay. Unfortunately, they still buzz around your person incessantly.
We would go back here any time and, after such a lovely experience, we are planning on making regular trips since it's only just under 70 miles away.
Kielder forest and lake itself can't be faulted for beauty, tranquillity and giving the feeling that you are many miles away from home. The extreme sunshine we had during our stay certainly helped!

This is one of the most relaxing sites ,nothing is a problem to the wardens. Toilets are clean and hot water free as well. They will try and accommodate you no matter what. Lovely for the dog, also a little well stocked shop. All the proceeds help Keilder itself which is good to see it going back into something. We stay at this site quite often and it has always been the same welcome

This was our first visit to this campsite, although the weather was against us and there had been rain during the week, this was not the best site we have visited. The drainage must be very poor as it was hard to find a pitch that wasn't waterlogged. The toilets were not the best either, I can understand the floors being dirty due to the state of the ground but during our two night stay I didn't see clean sinks or toilets at all. When camping these are your only facilities and therefore should be cleaned at least twice a day. The warden is very friendly and the local pub is good value for money. The local shop was a godsend as we forgot a gas pipe for our cooker and the owner let us borrow his.

We stayed at this site for 2 nights, site was a bit wet but we were able to pitch camp where it was dry. Toilet block was as clean as it could be considering the wet weather. Showers were very hot which was very nice, and there was always hot water no matter what time it was. Very helpful staff nothing was to much trouble. Local pub was only a 5 minute walk away, and we could also take the dog into the bar. Kielder has some great walks and great scenery, night was so clear the sky was full of stars. We did however wake up to a very white frost!but it did clear quickly when the sun came out. The only downside would be that they do need a bigger toilet block, would go back to this site again as it is a lovely and very quiet place.

I visited this site as part of a mountain bike break. It's easily accessible from Newcastle, and gives ready access to routes such as the Cross Border Ride and Kielder Northshore stuff. I did the 'bloody bush toll road' which is excellent.
Some reviews have commented on the mud on the site, but that's the same for any campsite in this very very wet year of 2008 and to be frank, even in this weather its wasn't that bad - I was still able to pick a dry pitch. If the drainage can provide me with that in this weather then it must be pretty good.
I was impressed with the facilities - clean toilets, showers and a very good (if small) shop. The site manager and manageress were excellent!
There's a decent pub (more like a working mens club, but the beer and steak and kidney pie were good) and shop within walking distance.
It's a reasonably priced campsite that does exactly what it advertises.

This was my first stay at Kielder and the area is glorious. We stayed here over the August Bank Holiday and all in all we had a very nice stay. Unfortunately the weather was poor and the site was a bog. There's one track down the middle of the campsite and cars have to park on the verge which just churned the ground up. In these conditions the toilet floors were muddy however I still think the rest could have been cleaned more often. Also on the Sat morning (probably the busiest) the shower was tepid and just dribbled water. The system seemed to have a problem coping with demand. Also the shower cubicles have one hook on the wall which makes the whole process of showering incredibly difficult when you're trying to keep clothes off a muddy wet floor. There's also no holder for soap razors etc when you're in the shower and god help you if you're trying to wash a young child at the same time. If the owners are reading this please put up a shelf or another hook as you've clearly never had to use these showers yourself when you've been camping in a field full of mud.
The washing up facilities were fine as was the small children's play area.
At the bottom of the field there's a path that takes you out to the local pub and Kielder castle. There are places to camp along here at the back that are more secluded. Youngsters and macho fire builders who think they need to chop up lots of wood tend to camp along here (as it's away from the main site). We had no problems but one lot were slightly noisy after hours and it would be useful if the warden had put them in their place. As I said they weren't a problem but this needs to be addressed to give out the right signal.
The lady warden was very friendly and helpful. We stayed an extra night and paid for this on our way out. They were great about leaving times which made our last morning very relaxing and unhurried.
I've mentioned the pub which was very busy but the staff were all fine and it had a good atmosphere. Kielder castle's great with lots of things for the kids to do. There's a nice short walk in the woods and a maze, a playground and some good educational information in the castle. This alone makes it ideal for a weekend break.
I'd definitely come to this site again. However apart from the Scout camp it appears to be the only managed campsite in this massive forest. I think someone's missing a trick here.
