3rd time camping here, yet again not disappointed!
Staff welcoming, were welcome to leave late on the day.
Not crowded, despite being a bank hol weekend.
Location is great, close to Kielder castle, excellent pub (Anglers Arms) a few minutes away.
Facilities clean (if basic, hot water, no queues)

Very picturesque site and as already mentioned the warden is so helpful and friendly. Not many sites where you are allowed to pitch a Motorhome (ours) and a tent (daughter and grandchildren) right next to each other.
We had absolutely atrocious weather! Most folk on the site packed up and left on the Sunday morning (May day bank holiday weekend). But we put our wellies and waterproofs on and stuck it out. The 'stream' turned into a raging torrent and the ground was very waterlogged, but that's the British weather for you.
Kids (5 & 3)liked the little playground on site, the maze and the castle. We visited the nearby Birds of prey in the rain and because the birds won't fly in the rain, we were offered free entry if we came back the following day, which we did - highly recommended.
We also visited the Stargazing place (pre-booked). No stars to be seen because of the clouds, but still a really enjoyable outing.
Only criticism was that the 'facilities' were really basic, but we used our own in the motorhome.
PS, we thought that no phone and no WiFi was a big 'plus'! Really got away from it all. There is a landline payphone for emergencies.

What a fantastic site! We have just returned from 4 amazing nights here and couldn't of asked for more. Steve the warden and the rest of the staff couldn't of been any more helpful and the situation is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. My girlfriend, myself and our dog walked for miles every day and hardly saw another person and mountain bike trails are literally seconds away. At night we were lucky enough to hit peak time for a meteor shower so we just sat round our campfire, drinking wine watching meteors shoot across the sky every few minutes
We really couldn't of asked for more for our first camp of the yearand will definitely be returning.

This is a remote rural site, perfect for people who want peace and quiet but this comes at a price.
1. There is nothing, I mean NOTHING in the immediate area not even phone signal. There is a small pub and a village shop which only stocks things which the villagers need, not holiday makers. And that is it, I've been coming here for 10 years and know the area inside and out. The closest supermarket is 30 minutes drive away and that's if you know the roads and can get your foot down.
2. This is the location of Britain's largest man made reservoir and its here for a reason - it WILL rain at some point every day, if your lucky it wont rain all day.
3. Midges, the midge problem in this area is unreal. You haven't experienced midges until you've been to Kielder. They will eat you, your partner, your children and your pets alive.
So if you like peace and quiet, walking/dog walking, bird watching etc can stand clouds of midges hovering around your head and face then this little gem of a site is for you. The site warden is brilliant, very welcoming and will bend over backwards to help you.
The amenities are very basic, but hey this is a rural site - its not the Ritz.
But best of all, the hooray Henry brigade haven't discovered this site yet so there are no Audi Q7s etc in sight. However once they do it will be game over.

This is a great site to get away from it all, we spent a week there from the 11th october 2014 the site was very quite until the last weekend but even then it wasn't noisy or disruptive to be there.
Steve the warden who runs this site is the real gem though as he was the friendliest most helpful chap you could wish to meet.
Rural and out of the way this place may be but beautiful it most certainly is and it won't be to your liking if you want a supermarket next to your forest walk or bike trail but there is a small shop in the reception and a village shop for all you will need as long as you are prepared to shop in shop hours not at 8pm at night and are willing to take the most idilic walk to get to the shop through the campsite wooded pathway. Oh the hardship of a stroll in the beauty that is this area! I think not, even in the car all the amenities are 2minutes drive to reach i. E. The shop/post office, castle and cafe and the trails for walking biking etc.
I am almost reluctant to rave too much about this site as it is a hidden gem for those of us who have discovered it already however it is run by the village for the village and therefore needs the support. Please give it you won't be disappointed.
There is no internet unless you are in toilet block or the reception hut but wifii is good in these spots the Anglers arms pub has free wifii and so does the cafe in the castle all of which are dog friendly, very dog friendly and warm and inviting. There is no mobile phone signal except in certain sporadic parts of kielder water the good old landline is used here and the site has a pay phone for your use.
The area around kielder water boasts a fabulous walk around the lake itself but is long, around 26miles but you can hire bikes near the castle and bike it or split the walks up into parts. There is a website which shows you all the art around the area and there are some fantastic things to view from a huge wooden head in the wood to freyas cabin-a golden wooden, intricately carved hut on the hill overlooking the water these are some of the best public art displays I have visited.
The walking and biking all start at or near the castle and campsite and maps can be download from forestry website or kielder water forest park website or can be purchased when you are in the area from various places. But ask Steve as he is the best person to speak to for local information and also for the history of the area too. We had many a long chat with Steve even when I am sure he had more pressing things to do but he always made us feel that he had all the time to make you feel welcome which he did with knobs on.
The facilities on site are as I would come to expect in a rural un-commericalized site. The shower block is heated and was really warm and comfy, the showers are self contained cubicles almost like a little shower room and dressing area with terracotta tiled floor, the shower heads where fixed position except one cubicle so to avoid hair wetting I had to use this one all the time as having long hair I didn't wish to have to dry after every shower twice a day, that said the water was lovely and hot, constant and fully adjustable to your needs just like home. So unlike more modern commercial sites that have lukewarm water, timers etc this site beats that hands down. However they are old fashioned in appearance and modernisation will be an improvement but not a necessity. The communal area has hanging pegs over all radiators for drying stuff. About 5 toilet stalls and 3 showers in each part, mens and ladies. Sometimes they got a bit smelly with damp clothes etc but it didn't linger long. They are maintained daily but in-between these cleaning times they can become muddy underfoot because of the rural aspect of the site but as mentioned before this doesn't last days as they are cleaned each day, I personally think in rainy weather to expect communal toilets etc to be mud and grass free unless the whole site if concreted is unacceptable and I commend the site maintenance man, also called Steve for keeping it clean the way he does. This site is for tents also and they don't have the luxury of complete shelter in bad weather like us caravanners do and sometime this has to be remembered.
Midges live here too in oct this wasn't an issue at all but as mentioned in previous reviews you are in the countryside and nature has to be embraced and or endured what ever your perspective may be. The fact you are right next to a stream and a forest and this is the area you wish to go to then you should expect this kind of thing so that said the midges are here and they invite and welcome you too. However the other more acceptable wildlife is also in abundance so visit the castle information centre or forestry website and look at whats on offer as there are hides, viewing cameras and guided talk and walks aplenty.
Last but in no ways least is the fact that this site in right in the heart of the dark skies park, take a torch for the evenings, preferably red light torches as this reduces light pollution, as the site reduces unnecessary lighting in the evenings to showcase the sky which is spectacular. You will of never seen stars like these with the naked eye before unless you have ever visited another dark skies area ( like Kirroughtree in Scotland). On a clear night wrap up warm, get the chairs out, crack open a beer or wine, sit back and enjoy natures best. You can also visit kielder observatory which is also very close to the site too. Visit their web page for all the details you will need, as they do special nights with talks etc.
Would I recommend this site? is a question I was asked and I would have to honestly say it depends on the type of person who was asking. YES if what you crave is a rural away from it all site with all you need but no bells and whistles but great basic facilities, fantastic people and spectacular views in abundance all with that village feel at the heart. NO if you want a concrete caravan park with heated loo seats and a shop like a supermarket open all day everyday next to your unit and a site that looks like a car park with trees.
I love it

Good basic camp site. We enjoyed a few days with two children aged 6 & 8. Has the usual facilities shower/toilet block, laundry, wash up area, small shop and play area all kept clean while we were there. The camp site has a stream a running through it so hence the midges. Small and friendly, felt able to let the children have a bit freedom. We chose this site to have some fun in the woods and we did with bells on, kids did the Gruffalo trail twice and the castle cafe has a great interactive wildlife exhibition. Kids wanted to do the maze every time we passed and it was fun. If you can take your bike, but you are able to hire them close by. We are looking forward to going next year with friends to toast marshmallows on the small camp fire you are allowed. Word of warning don't forget anything this is the middle of nowhere, we had to travel 17miles to go to the supermarket, when we couldn't get something local. Lastly the group that thought they could party the night away were mistaken and were asked to leave.

Fabulous site with clean facilities though the midges gave us a run for our money on our last night (late May bank holiday weekend).
The pub has fantastic food and is dog/child friendly and the walks from the site take in some stunning scenery. The village shop has limited stocks which we were disappointed with as we'd not taken much by way of bbq food with the intent of spending our money locally - however the pub benefited from this hugely.
Whilst our dogs/kids loved the weekend, we wish we'd left them at home and taken our bikes for a proper sightseeing tour. Maybe next time.

We'd wanted to visit Kielder for ages but as it's almost a 5 hour journey from where we live we'd put it off until we had a long weekend. We had spoken to the warden before we arrived and he had said we could choose a spot when we arrived, which we did, and then caught up with him when he arrived at 5 after finishing his day in the village shop. The warden is fabulous and you can talk to him for hours - a real asset to the campsite and Kielder village.
We rode the Kielder blue mountain bike trail on our first day and then followed that up with a circuit of the whole reservoir - surprisingly hilly but worth it. On our second day we followed a marked walk up to Deadwater Fell - about a 3 hour fairly strenuous walk but with some good views.
The pub (Anglers Arms) is a very short walk away but on weekends you may need to book. The portions are huge and good value, and they have a gluten free menu.
The site was quiet during the week but much busier at the weekends, the warden actually stayed over in his tent on the Saturday night to keep an eye on things and make sure everything was ok.
Showers are a bit 'municipal' but do the job fine - not modern but clean.
Lots of midges when we were there but they weren't too much of a problem for us.
We liked Kielder and the campsite and the warden, so we'll definitely be back when we have another long weekend,

Staff - some of the best we have ever met. Morecambe and Wise of Kielder. Facilities fine but need to clean in the corners - lots of dead insects. Location tremendous. Next to lake and visitor centre which has play area/indoor pool/shop/bar and lots of activities. The bar/restaurant was not dog friendly when we were last there but IS now - 7 dog friendly tables. Food was good and good value. Biggest downside (but not for me) was partner bitten lot by midgies. Love the location as do the dogs

Another place I’ve toyed with so long about visiting, as I dearly Kielder and previously stopped in nearby YHA. I was very lucky with the weather (but not the midges) thus enabling me to camp instead of having to use hostel again, so visited Kielder Camp camp site. Everyone’s recent reviews were spot on before my visit and Karl couldn’t have been more helpful and informative. Bless him, he even gave me the use of one of the Pods instead of having to pitch my tent. Site maintenance was spot on with work being completed whilst I was there. You can tell it is being well managed. I did inform him of a problem with one of the showers but otherwise everything couldn’t have been faulted. Location was fabulous if you love the great outdoors as it is in the middle of nowhere but central for everything outdoorsy for walking and cycling and the pub and shop is only around the corner. Thank to owner, he made me aware of Skyspace, whilst a bit of a trek I think was worth it. I visited the Hermitage Castle as I always do when I’m up there as it is not too far away. Thank to this mini break I have fallen back in love with my push bike as I discovered how easy it is to carry my bike with a car bike rack, so I can definitely recommend taking your bikes. Warning to visitors, make the effort to source good Midgey protection and invest in a Mozzy net. I felt like a bit of a fool walking around with a bag on my head, but very glad I did and was informed by locals that this was indeed the norm. Don’t let the Midges spoil your break up in Kielder between June – September. I bagged lucky picking the week before Kid’s summer holidays and the site was lovely and quiet, apparently it was about to get manic in the next week. Can’t wait to go back again!
