This was our first visit to Le Brevedent and what a great time we had. The weather was awful most of the 12 days we were there and the pitches couldn't cope with the rain, but hey we were camping not 4 star hoteling. The site is in a fantastic setting on a quite road out of Blagny le chateau, surrounded by woodland and corn fields. The site is not of the highest standards you can get on other sites but don't let that put you off, stay 1 night or 4 weeks like some people do, this site is a little piece of heaven. Less than 30 mins to the coast is a plus and so is the fact it is less than 4 hours drive from Calais.

There is a small fishing lake with a few big Carp in and canoes available to hire. Choose this site for your relaxing Normandy holiday and you will chill out big time.

Been back a week now from our annual holiday to France stopping at Le Brevedent again. We love this camp site and are happy to return every year. I haven't noticed anything new since my last review.

The weather was awful, continuous rain nearly every day and most nights therefore leading to mud and dirt. Our pitch was extremely muddy and water cascaded under our trailer tent pooling in our awning. Quite dangerous as we lift our disabled son in and out of the unit. The site staff did an excellent job of putting sand down to make it safer; they raised our step on planks to prevent if from sinking further. Lots of caravans needed towing off their pitches by the tractor. This isn't the fault of the camp site they can't control the elements.

Toilets/Showers - The water in the showers was quite a lot hotter than last year but the pressure drops if someone flushes the loo. I refuse to use the ancient block it is yucky. The blocks were *clean and there was always loo roll. The floor was *grimy when the rain had been really bad and people were very lax about using the squeedgy mop after they had showered. A shelf for toiletries is required in the lower shower block, I lost count how many times I had to grope on the floor for my shampoo/shower gel.

Shop - sells basic requirements and sells fresh croissants and baguettes every day however the pain au raisins are smaller but still the same price as last year. This year they have begun to sell newspapers too, a day late and really expensive.

Restaurant - we ate here once this year because in the past it had been 'hit and miss' I can genuinely say that we really enjoyed our meal and the price wasn't bad either its not Cordon Bleu but was hot and tasty. Space was made without fuss for our son's large wheelchair.

Bar - we don't use the bar because it is in the chateau and isn't accessible for wheelchairs but in fairness Raph did offer to have our son and his chair lifted up by his staff.

Disability/mobility - in parts the site is on slopes and the paths are somewhat uneven or gravelled. The disabled shower/toilet is OK but there is nothing to sit on in the lower block if you have problems standing, you also need something to put your toiletries onto too.

Some work needs doing on the two bridges which cross the streams on the camp site they are quite dangerous and would be closed off by our Health and Safety people but knowing this site I'm sure this is on their 'to do' list.

Reception/staff - as always friendly and helpful and they all speak a number of languages. They are all knowledgeable about the surrounding area for visits etc.

Contact with the outside world if you must use your phone is difficult, phone signals are very hit and miss unless you walk up to the gate and wander about, however there is free WiFi outside the cafe.

Area - There is so much to do if you are interested in the D day landings but there is more besides. Everyone just associates Normandy with the war which is a shame.

Supermarkets - you have three to choose from: Intermarche Hpermarket on the approach road to Pont L'Eveque, E Leclerc in Lisieux and Carrefour in Cormeilles.

If you want luxury stop in a hotel. If you want to relax and enjoy the scenery and are prepared to rough it a little bit then this is the place for you. Shabby chic describes it perfectly. Me, I've already booked for next year.

I have just returned from a four night stay at this camp site, and the reviews are right - it is great.

The two bathroom blocks I used were clean and perfectly adequate. There was a lack of hot water at 6pm, but it was fine in the morning and evening.

The playgrounds were good, though the football pitch was waterlogged but it had been raining on and off for days before we arrived. The bouncy castle was a hit with all of the kids, and was really well used by mine.

The shop stocked the basics, and the cafe and restaurant were good. The cafe also has 24 wifi access, which was useful to check email, while the children played on the bouncy castle.

The staff were great, especially when there was a mix up with a restaurant booking. They did everything they could to accommodate us which was much appreciated as I did not relish driving around looking for somewhere to eat with two small, hungry children in the car. The food is also good, and just outside there is a playground which the children can play in between courses.

There are a number of pretty towns in the area, especially Honfleur and Trouville.

Wow, really surprised to see this site so highly rated. We found it well below the Castels standard we've come to expect - and rely on when booking sites - and way below the other sites we stayed on this year. It is the first site in 15 years of camping in France we would not return to. To us, admittedly on a 1 night stop over, it was cramped, had poorly defined pitches, little privacy and overall seemed to be in a state of declining neglect. Our closest shower block was dark, dirty and the first we have ever chosen not to use. The other blocks looked better but were some distance away.

The take away pizzas were very good but that is about the only positive I could find.

This campsite was the last stop on my tour of Europe. With nothing booked in advance, every overnight stop was based on reviews from this website on campsites based along an outlined route. On the most part, all reviews were entirely accurate, more so when they were recently published.

So having email ahead to confirm there were spaces available, I was taken by surprise when we arrived and the campsite was full but it was soon clear why. A fantastic site, set in a beautiful French valley only 30 mins from Caen.

Nevertheless, the friendly staff managed to squeeze us in and so we stayed for our final night. The setting is exactly as described, great facilities, large pool, cafe (with free wifi) a restaurant and a number of washrooms. The grounds include a Chateaux, a beautiful large pond, lovely grassed pitches.

I could clearly see why it was a popular site. It occurred to me that anyway within a days travelling distance from Calais is going to be busy, once you move beyond the days distance, you can generally always get a pitch without booking except in the busiest of sites. This certainly proved the case for us.

A couple of minor negative points; there was a queue for the ladies showers in the morning, the residents of the statics were a little lively however ordinarily, we would have been pitched away from them, it was only because we were squeezed on to the site but it was packed with families and so at night, the children are also a little lively which is to be expected. The food is the restaurant was OK, but generally we had experienced better quality on most other sites. It was however VERY busy and you had to book in order to get a table.

The main negative point for me was the lack of mobile network coverage. I had 3G on every site visited over 3000 miles and 7 countries except this one, but take a seat in the cafe and you can log on to free wifi so not unworkable.

Having said all that, all negative points were vastly outweighed by the plus points. If you are looking for a nice stop off heading south or that final stop before home then look no further.

Highly recommended but book in advance.

What a great site. I found it through UK campsites and was thoroughly impressed from the welcome in reception all the way through to our departure. The staff were great and all those that I dealt with spoke very good English. The site itself is in a beautiful location beside a lake. The restaurant is very good value for money, we ate there every evening. The bastille day celebrations were terrific, with a local band that included one of the campsite team and an opportunity for musicians from all over Europe to join in.

We will definitely return to this site when we are next in the area.

We chose to stay here because of the location in Normandy and it was part of the Castels chain.

Location

The site is located in the heart of the Pays d’Auge and a mile or two from the beautiful village of Blangy le Chateau. The seaside resorts of Deauville and Trouville sur Mer are about a 30 minute drive away and Lisieux and Pont l’Eveque are about 8 miles away. There are many walking and cycling routes in the area and you can get routes from the local tourist office in Blangy. A visit to Honfleur is a must but then again there are dozens of lovely villages nearby.

Reception

There was a warm welcome from the reception staff. We were allowed to select out own pitch and then guided along the access road. We were also provided with a lot of information about the area.

Pitches

The pitches are marked and most quite large. We could easily get our caravan with awning and car onto the pitch with probably enough room for a couple of tents. Grounds maintenance does not seem to be a priority. When we arrived it looked as if the grass had not been cut for a few weeks, if at all. The overall impression was of an unkempt site.

Sanitary Facilities

One of the reasons for choosing this site was because it was a member of the Castels chain. They usually have high standards. However, the toilet block behind us was one of three and the oldest. It was way past a refit. Most of the lights in the washrooms didn’t work. The cleaner gave the floors a quick wipe with a mop but the floors were pretty dirty especially behind the doors and in the corners. Many of the taps needed replacing. My wife and I used the other toilet blocks. Which were more modern but once again the standard of cleaning was poor. You tried your best not to let your towel or shower sponge drop onto the floor.

Shop

There is a small shop selling the basics including fresh baguettes and pastries every morning.

Pools

There is a medium heated swimming pool which was ok and well used on hot days.

Eating

During the day in high season there is a cafe which serves hot and cold drinks and snacks.

The restaurant opens at 6pm and serves good quality if predictable food eg steak and chips, pizzas, salads etc.

WiFi and Phone

Free wifi access around the café area. Very slow as it is used a lot.

No mobile signal.

Animations

There were some activities for children but they were very low key. Twice a week they have a musicians evening which is very entertaining. In addition the house band campers are also invited to bring their instruments and perform and they do. Some of them were very good.

Other Stuff

There’s a large children’s playground plus football and volley ball areas.

Summary

If caravan club sites are akin to army camps eg lots of rules and regulations, standard height for grass, caravan must be sited with the peg on the right blah blah blah. Then this site is a bit like a commune. It is very laid back. Hence the lack of attention to grounds maintenance and sanitary facilities. We will not return to this site. Camping Columbier just a few miles away looked much better.

Having said that, it was apparent that many people return year after year. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It has got something. I’m just not sure that I get it.

This was our first visit to this campsite and what a lovely surprise. An amazing site in a lovely location. A site not only with a chateau but with fishing lake, swimming pool too.

Friendly site and relaxing atmosphere.

Standard facilities. Bar within the chateaux. ( where there is wi fi) Takeaway facilities too.

Hopefully we will stay here again. Stunning!

Another excellent stay, this year we choose the end of year music festival, wow what a delight musicians from around Europe that have stayed at the site during the year all got together for the Friday jam and Saturday was the various bands on the line up.

The manager and staff were all very helpful and a pleasure to deal with, the fishing was good but the lake could do with being deeper but did not detract from the good fighting fish.

Toilets were good and adequate, the chateu is being refurbished and has now got a baby room open 24/7 for the family to prepare the little ones food whilst the older ones play outside the cafe on the bouncy castle etc.

Very easy access to various places ie Monets gardens (66 miles away), and the Normandy D-Day sites, including Pegasus bridge.

Have booked to return again next year

Just returned from 7 days at Le Brevedent and can safely say that this is one of the best all round sites that I have stayed at for a long time !

We travelled as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 boys of 7 and 4)

We stayed here before travelling to a poor site in on the south west coast and enjoyed it so much that we returned early on the home leg and further extended our stay by three days.

The location is great, nicely tucked away but in easy reach of all the must see places - supermarkets/shops and petrol stations 10 minutes away by car

The staff all speak perfect English and nothing is too much trouble, even towards the end of the season they were all warm welcoming and friendly

I found the prices to be reasonable both for the stay, the bar and the restaurant.

The vast majority of the campers were British and I understand that the family that owns the site specifically target the British market and have done so for many years

There are ample facilities placed around the site and they are all reasonably good, there are three shower blocks, one dating back to the 70's and two considerably more modern (one of these has a number of family cubicles which are spacious and practical)

I found that there was plenty of hot water, but as with anywhere if you insist in using the facilities during rush hour don't be suprised if the hot water is limited - that is just basics really !

The facilities are cleaned to a high standard throughout the day (and night)

The pool is great, heated (just about !) and very clean

The shop, cafe and restaurant all provide a great service and quality food

The Chateaux is really accessible and whilst the family that run the site live on the top floor, the ground floor is used as an evening bar, pool room and music room

Friday and Sunday nights are a real bonus as the owner and his motley crew of artisan friends play and sing the night away - great entertainment and highly recommended

The play areas (including a football pitch), lake and animal 'hotels' down by the stream are great places for kids to enjoy, explore and let off some steam

The plots are well laid out, it's an easy going site so you feel like there is plenty of space and not massively overcrowded

All in all I would say this is an exceptionally well presented, laid back campsite owned and run by an artisan family - I can't recommend it enough and it is a must for families and the more easy going camper !
