We are not long back from a three week stay at this campsite, and we liked it so much that the last thing we did before leaving was to book the same pitch again for next year!

We weren't too sure what to expect; website photographs don't always tell the whole story, and even Google earth only gives a very flat impression of an area. We needn't have worried though as the site was charming, as was every single member of staff that we came into contact with.

We had been allocated a pitch when we made our booking, but I explained that we had rather a large tent and we were immediately offered approximately half a dozen other options to investigate, one of which was right next to the lake. Naturally we chose that one.

It's true that there were a lot of British people on site, and very few French people, however there was a fairly constant swell of campers from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and suchlike. Besides, I hardly think it's on to arrive at a site and complain that your fellow countrymen and women like it too. It did mean that there were no real language barriers for our three children to contend with and as such they were never short of buddies for all their adventures on site.

When we weren't out and about exploring the delights of Normandy, our two younger ones took full advantage of the (free) kids club. I realise that this won't be staffed by the same people year in year out, as it falls to child-friendly European language students etc to provide the entertainment each year, but the two Dutch ladies who were running it this summer were incredible, and my girls loved and adored them. They pitched the activities perfectly with lots of rummaging around in the woods, painting sticks, making masks, performing arts, swimming, football, treasure hunts and so on. Fabulous.

The site has an ambience of genteel crumbliness with the war-pocked chateau at its heart, and although entertainments were occasionally laid on (a great Bastille Day BBQ and outdoor concert with fireworks, and twice-weekly live music sessions in the Chateau bar or in the restaurant), this never descended into cringe-worthy Hi-De-Hi style shenanigans. On the contrary it felt like being invited to join the family around the piano and that family feel is really what won us over.

We made full use of the pool, kayaking, table tennis and play areas. There were some lovely walks to be had, and we greatly enjoyed the live music sessions; the site had some very talented musicians and there was no shortage of musical ability from the campers either.

If you have a young-ish family, or perhaps are camping without any children at all, I think this site is perfect. However, it's really not the site for those with disco-diva teens as it's fairly rural and truly doesn't cater for the more 'glamorous' requirements of those with raging hormones. All part of the attraction for us at the moment!

We timed our stay (inadvertently) to coinicide with a local village art fair, the village fete and Bastille day, so we had lots of interesting things to do while we were there. Even without these local goings-on, Honfleur is pretty (if expensive) and only about thirty minutes drive, and the beaches at Deauville are great for families.

The campsite reception gave us a list of local markets to sniff round, and we found plenty of very good shopping in Cormeille, Pont L'Eveque and Bernay. The little village near the campsite had a very friendly tabac and several other local shops including the ever-present Pharmacie.!

The only possible down side was in the restaurant. We ate there three times during our three week stay, and while the food for the adults was certainly acceptable, it wasn't brilliant (I think my husband ordered more successfully than me), and we felt the food for the children was a little on the dull side; spaghetti bolognaise, chicken or fish nuggets or a burger. The chicken nuggets were not good - my six year old refused to eat them and she's really not a fussy child. We didn't try the burgers or fish nuggets (I assume they meant fish fingers?) but mainly ended up ordering from the adult menu for them instead. The homemade pizzas were gorgeous though!

Aside from that really quite small criticism, my husband declared it to be the best holiday he's ever had, and I'd have to agree. I didn't want to come home!

Stayed here overnight enroute back to Dieppe. It wasn't our first choice but our other site was fully booked.

When we visited, the site was about 80% tents with a sprinkling of Eurocamp tents/statics. Once again our pitch was on a slope in the orchard despite advising C&CC that we had a twin axle. (caravan grounded when we tried to get off it.) Pitches were very close to each other particularly when used by large tents with the owners cars parked as an after thought. Facilities still the same although the kids club rep was very much on the ball. Heard a few grumbles about the shop - a carton of milk was virtually double the supermarket price. Six bottles of beer were 8 euros, not fantastic value considering you can get 24 stubbies for 7 euros! So stock up well beforehand unless you don't mind paying a fortune. The restaurant seemed busy but still pricey.

You either like le Brevedent or hate it.

It's probably a nice site for first timers or an essential overnight stop, but be very wary if you have a twin axle, and stock up on your food before you go or at the supermarket. Small pitches - not very level unless you're on the lake or in the bottom section.

We loved this site! We visited with our toddler on our first trip to France. We stayed at another reputable and popular site but the atmosphere here was so much better. The play areas for small children are fantastic, with a collection of playhouses and mini slides etc on the lawn, and a lovely play area right outside the restaurant so we could enjoy a lovely meal (the food and wine and restaurant itself were lovely) whilst the little one pottered in the sand. There is also a 3rd play area for older children in the far corner of the site.
The lake is small but very pretty and the owners gave us such a friendly welcome, and all service was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. One of the toilet blocks was dated but clean, and another was lovely and new with chrome taps and white basins, and nice family bathrooms including baby baths (no plugs but we improvised). All the pitches and grounds were well maintained. As we were off peak we had so much space and the owners were relaxed in letting us choose our pitch.
We met lots of other friendly campers including Dutch, Austrian, quite a few Brits. Everyone was respectful and quiet. There are lovely places to visit nearby. We cant wait to go back!

Enough has been written about the site over previous years, and this is just an update for anyone interested.

Recent criticisms refer to large vans/twin axles, and there are only few pitches suitable for the larger vans, consequently, these may not be available, so larger outfits beware. Not necessarily the fault of the owners, special requests through the CC etc are not always transmitted in detail. The whole site tends not to be regimented, so you do get people pitching 'as they see best', and it can be a bit congested in high season.

On a positive note, the kids play area near the restaurant has been enlarged, The resto has been refitted to give it a more intimate atmosphere. The bins have been moved to a dedicated area near the entrance, so you need your own sacks.
Many will appreciate the building of a new and additional wc chemical disposal point near the bottom toilet block to save the trek across the site. The bottom toilet block has had a lick of paint, and the far left toilet has had the lock repaired so does not lock people in any more.

There seem to be rather mixed reviews of this site during high season. We visited for 3 nights in June and it was our favourite site in France. Yes, it was 90% British (but not a bit like Butlins!) Yes, some of the toilet / shower blocks were rather dated- always very clean when we were there. But Wow! what a beautiful setting with the lake and chateau.
We hadn't booked this site, just turned up and had the most warm and friendly welcome of anywhere we had been. We were given a map of the site with all available pitches circled and told to wander round and choose our own pitch. We pitched near the lake and had a lovely view.
I must agree with others that the site shop was very expensive, but we found a huge Champion supermarket on the edge of Lisieux which was about 15-20 mins drive from the site. The nearby village of Blangy-le-Chateau was beautiful, a picture postcard type village! (We had been previously warned that the road through Blangy and on to the site was 'alarmingly narrow in places' but we found it to be fine, and had no problems)
There are so many places to visit from the site within easy driving distance, such as Honfleur which is well worth a visit! The biggest disappointment for us was that we were only there for 3 nights! We will definitely return for a longer stay. Highly Recommended!

Just returned from a 4 night stay. The kids thought this was the best site we stayed on during our trip. We had a spacious pitch that backed onto the football field, so I think we were quite lucky not to feel cramped.

There is a lovely lake within the site and a wood with walks backing onto the site.

My one grumble was that a monastery close-by rings its bells every morning at 7.00 sharp for a whole minute - so take earplugs and a sense of humour.

We ate at the restaurant once and found the food basic but pleasant enough. It is quite expensive to eat out in France generally, particularly with the Euro so strong, and so we tended to use the BBQ each evening.

We did some cycling, but found the roads narrow for the kids with some cars driving quite fast down the lanes. The steep hills nearby were a problem too. Plenty of shops 3km away at Blangy Le Chateau

We used the site as a base to visit Honfleur (the most beautiful fishing port I have ever seen) and Deauville & Trouville.

Had a lovely stay at this very friendly, if not over British (95%) occupied site. Stayed in a tent on the edge of the lake, a really peaceful spot. If you can, book early and try to get a lakeside pitch. The camp restaurant caters well for the caravanner / camper and a good menu was available for a total of around 20 Euro each including drink, although this does get expensive for a family. The choices were adequate and the meals mainly with chips. The main oddity of this site was the 95% clientel of British holiday families (explained by Mme Gurrey during her talk)

The site is excellent for children and the staff cater well for them with organised activities and walks for the young and old alike. The unisex facilities were adequate considering that many of the caravanner's had their own facilities.

The shop on site is expensive but OK for the basic baguette, milk and eggs.

The lake below the château is the main attraction of the site with Canadian canoes for hire quite cheaply, although the buoyancy aids were unsuitable for the youngsters as they could fall through them. The lake fishing appeared reasonable and I saw three carp caught, 2 of 7lb and one of 9lb.

The children have a play area, badminton court, table tennis ,and children's swings.

On Sunday evenings Mme Gurrey gives a talk on the history of the house, their family and the site and her talk is well worth a listen.

The Château has a bar, small games room, and some fruit machines. The reception also has a cafe, and a computer with internet access available for clients.

This site is a jewel for British holidaymakers and their families although it would be nice to see some more French holidaymakers !

I am sure you have read all the site's facilities on this and other web sites, and feel sure they will appeal to some. But we stayed for one night on our way South, we had booked months in advance and specified we had a twin axle caravan. On arrival we were shown to a corner pitch that was incredibly tight for our van, the people behind us could hardly get out of their awning as we were that close! We did ask to be moved to a larger pitch opposite but were told it was booked (also for one night).
The toilets and showers were dirty, and the smell from them was incredibly over powering, so much so we left early without eating breakfast. The bins were over flowing and the there must have been 500 empty bottles on the floor by the bottle bank. We only stayed on this site as it has had many 'rave' reviews, but it certainly didn't live up to any of them! Possibly, it can't cope during the high season, but we will use somewhere else next time. On the plus side the surrounding area is lovely.

This was our second year at Le Brevedent. It is a lovely site in beautiful, relaxing surroundings. Since last year there had been a couple of changes to the kid's play area which were good and other play things had been provided near the cafe area where toddlers could play. Our children were more than happy with both play areas.

The facilities are very good. One shower block is not that great but the new ones by the reception are lovely and spacious, and the baby bath cubicles meant that we didn't have to bucket bath the kids for the first half of our holiday (they really don't like the showers - and there's nothing like a screaming toddler's voice bouncing off three tiled surfaces of a shower block!).

The shop is pricey but you come to expect that at a site shop. Staff are 99% friendly.

Things to do.All the D-day stuff, Bayeux (and the tapestry), Rouen (good for shopping), Honfleur (my personal favourite for charm, atmosphere - especially on market day- and great photographs)Cerza zoo (only ten mins drive away and good value for money), Deauville (seaside town) and it's nice just relaxing on the camp site.

I love this site, my only complaint would be that the pitches are on the small side, made worse at height of season probably.

I would recommend this site to anyone wanting a nice, peaceful, relaxing site or anyone with young kids like ours who are more than happy with a play area for entertainment and also appreciate family friendly shower facilities.

We used this site as an overnight stop travelling to and from Calais and were glad we used it just for that and not for a full holiday. On the outward trip the pitch given to us was on a steep slope and was tiny despite me advising C&CC months ago that we had a twin axle. The pitches were jam packed, the majority being tents. Our closes neighbour was just over 2m away. Alot of the tents were large enough to occupy the whole pitch(and a bit more)and the owners seemed to think it was reasonable enough to dump their cars on the roadside verges, corners etc which made manoeuvring with a caravan very difficult. The play facilities are good for children although some seemed to be intent on screaming their heads off until 10.30pm!

The shower blocks as mentioned were of different ages -the one nearest us was out of the 60's.

Pool looked ok though we didn't use it.The meal we had at the restaurant was one of the most expensive we had over the whole of our holiday and wasn't that impressive. There is a shop on site but it is expensive. There are a large number of Eurocamp tents and mobile homes on site -some of which were near the chemical disposal point/sewage bit which you could smell for some distance so if you get a pitch close to the eurocamp mobile homes check it carefully!

The return leg was even worse - the pitch we had was bigger but was basically a mud pitch as the previous occupant was presumably a tent/awning as the grass had not seen the sun for some time! It rained heavily during the night as well with the rain running down towards the pitches on the lake making it a bit of a mudbath. Overall we were disappointed with the site and would not go back again although our stay was in the peak of high season so perhaps it would be better at a quieter time. If you like a 'Butlins' style busy and noisy campsite with lots of fellow Brits then this is for you.
