We decided to book an impulsive camping trip somewhere in Cornwall we hadn't been before. After much searching Chy Carne sealed it for us as the booking was easily competed online and the cost was fantastic. When we arrived the staff were great very friendly and helpful. As it was low season the site was quiet and we were offered a pick of any spots one with a gorgeous sea view although we opted to camp at the bottom field out of the way. It was a shame the toilets at this end were shut as with two children it would have been much more practical although the walk to the nearest block wasn't too far. The views from the park are amazing and I loved waking up each morning looking out to the sea, the walk to the beach was about 10 minutes and I found the dog beach nicer than the main beach as it was quieter. The idea of the food on site was good in theory and the fact they deliver was a bonus too. We did try out the chips and pizza although I have to admit it wasn't very well cooked or good value for money. The bins next to the toilet block were overflowing which is a shame, although I always felt as though the shower block and toilet facilities were kept really clean inside. The kids play area was nice and they spent a lot of time there, the fellow campers on site seemed friendly too. There was a lovely atmosphere about the place and it is set in a beautiful part of the world. The only drawback was the hire of the fire pits at an extra cost and the rules are strict regarding BBQs, so you wouldn't be able to just have a campfire if you wanted which is one experience of camping that we as a family love. Would we go back? Yes and we would recommend it too. Overall the customer service was friendly and helpful, the site was clean (bar the bins) and apart from the odd negatives (shower blocks closed/on site food) we had an enjoyable experience at Chy Carne.

Just came back from a weeks stay at this campsite. We weren't originally planning on travelling this far down the coast but the price of the holiday sealed it for us, and am I glad we did!
The staff are very down to earth and friendly.
The pizza shop is lovely and reasonably priced and will also deliver to your van/tent. The food shack in the tent field is also very nice (I personally recommend the lamb cofta kebab - delish!) we went in the marquee while we waited for our food and had a little game of bingo, which my 7yo loved, all very friendly.
The campsite is nice and quiet, apart from the odd yap of a dog now and then, but this is a dog friendly site so you have to expect it. Considering this site allows groups, at night it is silent, no rowdy youngster partying the night away, just what I like, very peaceful.
My children were transfixed with the bunnies! Every day twice a day they would be over there petting the babies, they loved them. The site also has a nice play area for children, the pirate ship and swings which my girls also loved.
Our van was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. However, one day my 3yo miss-footed and fell down the gap between the van and steps and she had to be lifted out, we had a few tears but she was fine, no real harm done.
The nearby beaches are lovely and the water is crystal clear. My kids loved the many rock pools on kennack sands which is down a steep hill from the site, we took the car as the trek back up would have been unbearable with 2 moaning kids!
While we were there we visited, kennack sands, Cadgwith, Penzance, Jubilee pool, Mousehole, Flambards, Falmouth, Newquay, and Padstow.
All in all we had a really lovely stay at this site, and we will most certainly recommended it and will definitely be back, great holiday!

Having stayed on many campsites in the last 7 years and written over 100 reviews on UKCS, I really hate writing negative reviews. Thankfully I have only had to write 2 others in the past. I do feel it is important to be honest though.
We had read the reviews for Chy Carne on UKCS and all in all they were good and a rating of 9/10 always pleases us. So, based on the reviews and the fabulous views from the site (as shown on their website) we decided to pre-book 3 nights. Their booking system was fast and efficient and we liked the fact that we were able to choose a pitch beforehand. We even emailed the site to ask them their advice on the pitch with the best view and every email was fast and friendly. A few days before we were due to stay at Chy Carne the weather took a turn for the worse and having booked a grass pitch we panicked slightly (having had a really bad experience on grass last year when our camper was damaged by a campsite owner towing us off!). I emailed the site to see if we could change to a hardstanding pitch (sadly no sea view) and had an almost instant reply confirming that it would be OK and telling us where to pitch on our arrival.
On arrival, the office was closed (as we had been told) but one of the owners was outside so we had a quick chat and drove through the statics to find our pitch. Our reserved hardstanding had been taken (we were told by the campers on the next pitch that they had turned up in the middle of the night). Not a problem, we would revert back to our originally booked grass pitch as the ground was quite hard. But that was full too! We managed to grab the owner before she headed off out and she spoke to the caravanner on the hardstanding pitch and he'd been told to pitch up where ever he liked once he turned up! She did say he would have to move, but he had a disabled wife and said the hardstanding was better for her so there was no way we would have expected him to move so we tucked ourselves away in the corner (grass pitch - no sea view). To say we were a little disappointed was an understatement because the views from some of the pitches were absolutely stunning.
On visiting the toilet/shower block, again we were disappointed. It's not often we book sites that charge extra for showers but hadn't actually noticed that this was the case until we'd booked. I don't have a problem with paying extra IF the showers are of a good standard and clean. Sadly this was not the case. The bin area, located right outside the gents toilets/showers was absolutely disgusting. There must've been 8/10 large wheelie bins full to bursting and bags and bags of rubbish just dumped around them. The stench was horrible. We never actually witnessed it (because we chose to use our own on-board facilities) but one of the campers we spoke to the following evening said he'd been for a shower that day and the floor in the gents was literally crawling with maggots! At that point I was ready to leave. The 'bin men' arrived the next morning and it was like a major event on site with lots of regulars/seasonal campers stood watching! The indoor washing up area/laundry was OK (although never cleaned by previous users) but 4 sinks and 1 plug wasn't very useful! We cannot comment on the marquee bar or the food areas because we never used them.
We managed 2 nights at Chy Carne and enjoyed the walks to Kennack Sands and Cadgwith but decided to leave a day early.
It's a real shame because with a bit more care and attention it really could be a great campsite in a stunning area. Maybe the static area of the site is concentrated on more than the touring section, because that part of it seemed very clean and tidy. It wasn't busy so I can only imagine how it copes in peak season. I guess we are all different and all have different standards but unclean showers and toilets and over flowing bins are not our cup of tea I'm afraid.
Sorry Chy Carne but, after having such high hopes, we won't be back and feel that we cannot recommend you to our many camping friends.

Just had an amazing fortnight here and have already booked up to return next summer because we loved the site and the area so much. Fantastic friendly team of owners and staff who work very hard to make your stay as happy as possible. Facilities on site are clean and well maintained, making your stay comfortable and welcoming. Campfires are allowed here which is why we chose this site over others. Can't wait to go back, one of our fave sites. Just wish we lived nearer so we could pop in for weekends and hit those gorgeous beaches!

We are a family of 5 who have just returned from a 2 week stay at this site.
The site is in a beautiful location and ideal for exploring the Lizard Peninsular. Kennack Sands beach is a 10 minute walk downhill and offers 2 cafes, parking, lifeguards, toilets and surf lessons.
We used Poltesco Stables for hacking, Lizard Adventure for coasteering and Gallery Anthony for an art workshop - all of which were fantastic and I would highly recommend. The chocolate factory and craft centre is worth a visit.
The site itself offers a shop/reception that is open all day until about 10pm, which means there is always someone friendly available to deal with queries, advice etc. You can also freeze ice blocks, charge phones and inflate air beds free of charge.
You can buy wifi which was reliable, and kept the teens busy for a few days.
The staff wear blue tshirts and are constantly busy escorting people to their pitches, delivering chimineas, emptying bins and doing ongoing maintenance.
It rained heavily a few times during our stay and the grounds held up well, no flooding or bogginess!
The pitches are a great size, slightly sloping, and the electric hookups easily accessible and very reliable.
The first week was very quiet and we never had to queue for toilets, showers or washing up. The second week it was very busy and I was worried that the facilities would not cope. However, I only had to queue once for all and so it was not an issue at all.
The website states the showers are 50p so we went prepared with a bag of coins. The showers are operated by a push button like swimming pool showers. The temperature, flow and efficiency were all fine. Our 10yr old daughter has long hair and managed to shower, wash and condition her hair on her own for 50p, so I have no idea why some reviewers have made an issue of showering.
The toilet seats in the ladies kept coming off in the first week when it was quiet but were fixed as quick as they came off, and bizarrely none came off during the busier week, so I concluded there must have been heavier or clumsier women staying during the first week!
As others have said the facilities were kept very clean and tidy.
The marquee was great for an evening if you wanted it. There was a pool table and table football, a bar and during the second week a quiz night and a bingo night. We did not use it but as we were close by we could see others did and enjoyed it. It never caused a noise nuisance either.
We camped but passed the statics everyday and they looked fine, certainly not too close together.
In conclusion, Chy Carne is a great site. Very good value for money, friendly and ideally located.
I only hope it does not become a victim of its own success and loose its charm.

Just returned after 9 nights stay in what is a very beautiful part of the World. The Lizard has a great deal to offer and is an excellent place for a family holiday.
Chy Carne is in a beautiful location, walking distance to a nice safe dog friendly beach. It was larger than I expected and full most of the time.
Our pitch was just big enough for our Outwell Hartford XL and was sloping enough to make sleeping interesting at times as I slipped down my air bed during the nights.
We had issues with noise on the first night which the owners did respond too and luckily was not an issue thereafter. We did not use the bar or on site food services but the shop was great for the basics and sweets for the kids!
After location out next priority is the cleanliness of the toilets and showers. I had no problem paying the 50p extra if they are good and clean but this aspect was disappointing.
The shower and toilet facilities were stretched to their maximum during our stay and just managed to handle the number of people staying. Timing was important for showers as there were queues most mornings and they were only cleaned once per day so did get dirty. 5pm-7pm was a good time we found. At one stage there was also no toilet paper in any of the toilets.
Personally I think cleaning the showers twice per day, as almost all other sites do, should be a priority. Also leaving some mops and buckets around would help.
The family agreed that the location was great and the site was OK, if only the showers had been cleaned twice per day.
I think we'll return to The Lizard but probably try another site as we were told there were better very close by.

Management response: Thank you for taking the time to leave your customer feed back
On the whole we are not disappointed with the feedback but wish to clarify and correct one of your comments regarding the cleaning of the shower and toilet blocks The truth is that we have a number of residential cleaners that join us through out the summer weeks and undertake the massive task of keeping these facilities clean. The facilities are cleaned a minimum of three times a day and are inspected every two hours. However we are very reliant on visitors to help us to upkeep the facilities between cleans however this is not always the case. You must appreciate that we cannot close the facilities every time we clean as this will lead to further complaints. There are some visitors that really do not care and this spoils it for the vast majority that do. We do not leave mops and buckets as we have done this in the past to our horror when returning to find that they have been used to repaint the ceilings and walls and used as plungers for the toilets.
Of course your opinion does differ from the many reviews about the cleanliness of the facilities but I can assure you that they are cleaned far more often than you are reporting. Of course at peak times there is the possibility of a small queue forming for showers and toilets but there are two shower blocks and the main block tends to be less busy at peak times. This block is situated a matter of two minutes away from the summer camping shower block. We currently have four toilet blocks on site We will be adding a further two toilet blocks for the season 2014 this will provide more coverage to the lower camping fields.
At Chycarne we have in excess of 70 level pitches but we do encourage visitors to book early if a level pitch is what they require. Some of the pitches are situated on gentle slopes but this is a matter of opinion but Cornwall is not a very flat county but we don`t get flooded either.
We note your comments regarding the local area and must agree with you this is a stunning part of the world but I must disagree with you that there are better sites near by as I know for a fact that this is not the case. No sites locally to us have all our facilities or range of facilities, views and friendly staff at the very affordable prices that we charge but I guess you will probably make the mistake of choosing another campsite and then wished that you had returned to us. Of course this is our opinion and of over 70% of visitors that return to chycarne year on year.
On a final point your comments have been noted about on the rare occasion that there was no toilet paper in the toilets This in fact was correct and when reported to reception a member of staff was dispatched to investigate What it appeared was that the toilet rolls were taken from the dispensers by a visitor or visitors for their personal use. Not very neighbourly I agree but I’m sure you will agree with me that if such acts are to occur then this is not really something that we can truly be blamed for even despite the inconvenience and we apologise on behalf of the shameful visitor
We do hope you choose to return and see the further improvements for yourself that will be added this winter that will only make Chycarne an even better place to take your summer holidays. Thank you. Chycarne |

Have just come home from our 3rd summer holiday at Chy Carne and as usual we’ve had a brilliant time. The site has a very laid back feel and the staff are fabulous and can’t do enough for you (the outlaws decided to visit us on our 2nd week and Sue was so helpful in finding them a suitable pitch, still with a smile).
The showers were always clean and I never had to queue. We ate from the take away and the pizza parlour and both were fantastic. Pete even offered to deliver the Pizza’s to us in the rain!
We had some ferocious storms while we were there and the drainage on site is spot on, much better than other sites we have stayed.
We just don’t have anything negative to say, that’s why we keep going back and will continue to do so :-)

Be prepared, it is highly likely you will not get the pitch you booked and paid for, or find another unit or tent wedged in. Showers are coin operated ( not disclosed on website) site shop is extortionately expensive, and beach access is a nightmare. Electricity points will often have multiple adapters for the extra units they have crammed in. The only level pitches are the terraced ones.
My son and I booked plots 60 and 61, on the website they were the last two end pitches for caravans, and paid extra for the larger pitches, we got there and a tent had been allotted a pitch right in the middle, separating us, making it a 3 pitch area, not 2 as shown on the web site plan, the attendant was disinterested, offering us alternative pitches totally unsuitable for caravans. We were eventually shown to 2 vacant pitches in the coldest and windiest part of the site. The tent field was dangerously overcrowded, with guy ropes often overlapping others. The caravan pitches were interspersed with any tent that would fit
A potentially wonderful site ruined by greedy owners and bad management.
Payment has to be made in full, with no refunds, now I can see why.

Apart from a mix up on booking which was very quickly resolved, my family and I found this an enjoyable, friendly and clean site. The site staff could not do enough to help you. As a result of a very wet summer there was a lot of mud so we were very impressed with how clean the toilet/shower blocks and washing up facility were kept. This is a very dog friendly site and there were plenty of dog bins provided.
The marquee bar was reasonably priced and it was good that you were able to take your drinks back to your unit. The snack shack could do with staying open longer in the evening especially at the weekends when people are arriving and setting up. The reception/shop is open from early in the morning till very late, you can even get a freshly made pizza from here.
The 2 playgrounds were enjoyed by the children and were maintained very well. Storage of a touring caravan is very reasonably priced. There are plenty of fresh water points which were not far away from units.
The hire of the benches and fire pits are a very good idea. Some of the pitches are not exactly level but bricks are offered and available to help level your unit, the staff will even get them for you if you ask.
There is a local pub around the corner from the site on route to the beach. There are 2 parts to the beach one part being dog friendly. We would definitely use this site again.

Stayed on this site for one night while touring round this lovely part of Cornwall. We booked at very short notice and so were very grateful to be fitted in, received a really friendly welcome which was nice and taken down to the non electric field and told to find a spot. This proved to be a bit tricky as the field was very busy and sloping. In the end some other people who were setting up kindly moved their car over a bit so we could squeeze in. We were on a bit of a slope which was more noticeable when lay down in the van but it was only for one night so bearable. Now onto the positives, lovely views across to the sea, quiet at night despite being a busy, family friendly site, great fresh pizzas made on site and delivered to our van, clean toilets and showers and a really nice touch is being able to hire fire pits and buy logs, not often you come across a site with lots of mod cons that allows this. A nice beach was about a 10 min walk downhill, longer coming back up! Overall a very good site that I would recommend.
