We've been to Chy Carne twice now for our main summer holiday. The first impression is that the site is very spacious and well cleaned / maintained. Pitches are huge and you're not charged extra if you wish to put up a day / toilet / pup tent within your pitch. So we felt free to spread out and use the available 10 metres!
Its a very friendly site, with the owners and staff often on hand to say 'hi'. The top field with EHU's has some stunning sea views, while the bottom field (non-EHU) is quite secluded.
Shower facilities are good, despite only 4 showers for each gender in the main block there's rarely a queue even with the site full. And I understand more showers are being built for 2011. There's a good washing up area and even an on-site launderette which is cheaper than the nearby towns.
The on-site shop is open late (11pm) during the summer and is well stocked. The available range of takeaway foods is amazing really, from what you'd expect (burgers, chips, breakfasts) to pizzas and milkshakes made on site with anything you care to name. If the shop stocks it, they'll make it into a milkshake!
We did find that sometimes the rubbish piled up, talking to the site owner I understand he's tried many times to arrange for more of the big bins and more frequent collections. Also there's no recycling facilities at present.
In case of bad weather, there's a marquee to take refuge in. This can also be hired, for example for groups/rallies. Otherwise for entertaining the younger ones there's a games room and a play area which features a very popular 'pirate ship' for children to climb on, in and around. This is one of the few sites to provide fire pits and chimineas, for those late camping evenings chatting to your friends.
The site is just a short walk (albeit down a steep hill) from the beach, and a short drive from Goonhilly (some nice walks there) and The Lizard.
You won't get much of a mobile phone signal, but you should have a great camping experience at Chy Carne.

We stayed over for 1 night. Site was empty of tents/ tourers but a few people of the statics.
Due to time of year majority of the facilities were closed and site extremely quiet.
We choose hard standings and found everything to be very clean and tidy in the showers / toilets.
Walked into village - didn't try the Potters Bar as didn't look to welcoming. The small shop sold lots of tourist gifts etc but no supplies.
Down to the beach is a fairly narrow road - there is a car park about half way down - from there on the road looks very narrow.
The wardens were working hard whilst we were there, fencing in the site to make it safer for children.
At this time of year site was just what we wanted - would imagine in high season gets very busy and there is a lot of site to keep families happy.

We came here early September for a 3 night break in our tent. Reception not manned but were eventually greeted by a friendly chap who we assume was the owner. Our name was not taken, nor any info about facilities given. We were given a choice of pitches and pitched on one of the lower terraces near the skittle alley.
The site seems to have breathed a sigh of relief after a long summer season of campers, there were very few tourers staying on site which surprised me as normally we find Cornwall very popular in September. The site was quiet and relaxing with a wonderful view out over the coast.
Loved the little converted sheds down on the lower part of the park which have been cleverly converted into spacious bathrooms with a sink & loo - I actually preferred these to the main toilet block. The main toilet block - found the toilets cramped, but showers spacious and water temperature lovely and warm with good pressure.
We did not see the main block toilets/showers were cleaned during out 3 night stay and they never had that 'fresh smell' that you get if they had been cleaned and I had 'missed seeing the cleaner'. We did see the bottom 'shed rooms' cleaned once during our stay. Hairdryer 50p coins. The washing up area in the main shower block was dirty with an over flowing bin.
Shop - we had no idea of opening times as this was posted from 6am-7pm on the door (presume summer times??) and when my husband did go in the shop for something the shelves were virtually empty. Nothing else on site open. An information board or something handed out on arrival with local eateries/shops/petrol stations etc would be handy.
The Potters Bar pub up the road is a bit 'rough & ready' - we did call in for a drink and mentioned to the barman about food and his reply was that the landlady had a hangover today so was not cooking and then when she made an appearance shouting at someone leaving the pub I felt we had been saved from eating there anyway so I would steer clear!
The CostCutter shop is open in SeaAcres just down the hill for bits and bobs if you are stuck.
The beach at the bottom of the hill is lovely, two cafes either side, we ate at the one next to the car park but afterwards noticed that the one on the right hand side (going down the hill) is cheaper.
Note to dog owners: If going before October the 1st no dogs are allowed on the West Sands which is the nearest to the carpark. East Sands is reached over quite a long and overgrown footpath which is not suitable for the infirm at all, it's up and down a track and can be slippery in places and once you get to the beach it's access over pebbles to the sands.
To sum up Chy Carne - I would think in the Summer season if you were a family camping you would have a good camping experience in a lovely location. Firepits get a big thumbs up from us and the site had a laid back attitude. For us though the site felt a bit lonely and neglected, I can appreciate after a hard 6 weeks of looking after the families things would be winding down but if you are willing to open your site till November the quality of the facilities should be the same for all - even more so when there are less people on site to cater for.

After travelling for over 6 hours, and our first 'long haul' camping holiday, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Chy Carne Campsite.
We received a very bubbly welcome upon arrival and we were allocated our pitch almost immediately with a choice of approximately 3 pitches to choose from.
The pitches are generous in size and are very private having your own border with ample space at the side for cars.
The views from the campsite are stunning, and although this is probably one of the biggest campsites we have stayed on, it is still very private and has a 'relaxed' feel about it which is just what you need after travelling for such a long time!
We would strongly recommend requesting to see if there are any chimineas / fire pits available, as it really is lovely having a bbq with a chiminea / fire to keep you warm during the summer evenings!
Showers are adequate, as is the dishwashing area and laundry facilities, and given the size of the camp site, we were pleasantly surprised that they were not overcrowded, although sometimes, the ladies showers did have queues on some occasions.
The only downside to the site is that some pitches are on a slope, but then that's camping so it didn't spoil our holiday one bit.
I would strongly recommend this campsite and it somewhere we would definitely return too again.
We had a fab time, so thanks to the owners and management team.

We booked this site after reading reviews and wanting a site where you could have open fires.
We are a family of four and for this holiday, mother in law came too! We arrived the day after torrential rain had visited! However, the site is very well drained and we found a great pitch which was slightly sloping and had fantastic sea views. We ordered a fire pit which was delivered to our site.
The wood on sale at the shop contained a mix of logs and softwood which burnt really well. Although the logs were slightly more expensive than those available locally, we found it much easier to buy from the site rather than lug loads of wood around in the car.
The owners were really attentive, nothing was too much trouble. We (well, me actually!) forgot our gas bottle but we were able to borrow one and just pay for the gas used! Being a bank holiday weekend, the fire pits were at a premium and we didn't realise that unless we specifically said, the pits were only left with you for two nights.
However, the guys on the site let us use one of the big communal fire bases and even delivered it to our tent. You could not wish for better service.
The loos were great. The showers were nice and big with hooks and a seat. The takeaway food cabin was great. The kids loved the play area and the games room.
Although we didn't use it, there was a marquee set up where you could eat your takeaway in the dry in case of rain. All in all a super site with attentive staff.
I would highly recommend it to anyone and we will be back!

A gorgeous campsite with normally very friendly staff. Not far from the beach with lovely facilities on site - including lovely areas to wash up,
a clean well equipped shower block and a great play area, not to mention a marquee for hanging out when the weather isn't that good. There are specific areas for barbecuing and the food from the catering van and the shop is pretty good.

We wanted a holiday park type place but one that is set for real camping – One that allows fires and that is not too ‘agadoo’ in nature!
1st impressions were that Chy’ ticked all boxes with great views to boot.
We arrived for a week’s camp on a fine day to a warm and friendly welcome. Our pitch was sloping and it took some time to figure out how to position our 3 tents for that all important camping Fen-Chui.
We settled on a corner location because of the shelter - a large hedge - although could have opted for a more exposed mid field area with stunning views over Kennack Cove.
The cove itself is a ¾ mile 15 minute walk down hill and a calf burning uphill walk back. There are scenic coastal walks in all directions. The sandy cove has great waves, rock pools and a cafe in a great location.
As with most coastal sites – The weather had a mind of its own (with being on a hill was quite windy) with the locals proudly talking of their micro climate and the fact it can be totally different here to just a few miles away.
Our weather was very changeable and that’s where Chy Carne began to show its fallibilities.
The sites team are very friendly and willing to help in whatever way they can – nothing is too much trouble when asked.
I found the attention to detail lacking, some litter in hedgerows, toilets regularly running out of loo roll and games room equipment not functioning correctly.
The shower blocks and toilets which are basic had unclean floors most of the time however given the weather this is not altogether a criticism more an opportunity to clean & stock more regularly. There was no soap or hand dryers operating in any of the loos.
The sites water supply was intermittent – a big frustration when not being able to shower, flush loos and wash dishes. A great point for some. Frustrating for others however the wifi service is weak to non–existent you have to buy open zone vouchers. 3G no reception either. And some phone networks only work in certain areas.
The location of the campsite is good – 3 miles from Lizard and 9 from Helston where the main Supermarkets are based – Lizard has great butchers and all you need for a small shop and a pricey pasty. There are some beautiful coves and beaches to discover nearby.
There is a pub – The Potters Bar next door – Not the greatest atmosphere, shocking decor and poor beer but friendly and welcoming all the same (has the footy on!) Our best meal locally was the Gweek Inn a 15 minute drive away – Top food, Service and atmos’.
On a cautionary note there is a derelict building adjoining the campsite that any EHO would have a field day should they inspect it! - Old bin bags full of rubbish fester in an open air dump, fridges, tv’s etc– Not a place for kids but all too easily accessible to adventurous young family members direct from the campsite.
In summary a very good site with potential to be great, it’s friendly, accommodating with great views in a good location to explore this part of Cornwall.
Owners Comments: Thankyou for leaving your review. We have 100 pitches, of these 70 pitches are level, the remainder of pitches on our summer camping field are slightly sloping but do have wonderful views over Kennack Bay. Out of our main season (July/August) you are free to pitch where you like, choosing a flat pitch if required is not a problem, a member of staff would have been more than happy to show you to a level pitch if required.
Although new for this year our games room has been well used, the equipment is not owned by us, so any damage etc caused to the equipment has to be reported, we then have to wait for the engineer to come and repair the games. For 2011 we hope to move our takeaway pizza's into the games room so that we have a member of staff present to ensure that the equipment is not abused.
The water pressure this year has been a problem not only for Chy Carne Holiday Park, but also the village of Kuggar due to the local reservoir being short of water, Sth West water has now increased the pressure to the area so we hope that the pressure will once again be back to normal.
The derelict building is not owned by Chy Carne Holiday Park, and is in fact private property, the developer has assured us that work will soon commence on the site, however, as part of our continued improvements, we have installed a new fence at the top of our summer camping field, meaning that access cannot be made to the derelict building via our site. We are in the process of erecting fencing around the whole perimeter of the site to increase our security and to give parents peace of mind that their children remain safe inside the holiday park.
Our toilets are cleaned/checked at least 3 times a day in our busy season (more if needed) and we have double toilet roll holders, its very rare for them to run out of toilet paper, if notified our staff would replace them when needed.
The wi-fi is only available around the shop area, and is provided by bt-openzone (this service is available to us as we are a BT business customer) we are looking at installing a better wi-fi service for our customers in 2011.
Once again many thanks for your review, and we hope that you will return and enjoy our further improvements that we are currently working on.

Just got back from our main two week holiday at Chy Carne and feelings are a little mixed. I think the main thing to say is that we would feel happy going back to the site again.
The next thing is that we endorse what has been said previously about the owners being very friendly and helpful and also hardworking - this was very evident and much appreciated.
We learned that the owners took over the site only 2 years ago and it appears to be very much a work-in- progress, so any criticisms are made with that very much in mind, we feel sure that further improvements are in the pipeline.
Trying to keep it brief:
Pros:
• Friendly, helpful and hard-working staff.
• Thoughtfully well-prepared ground – especially gateways between fields. Heavy rain shouldn’t be a problem.
• Stunning views along the coast towards Black Head.
• New well-stocked shop and games room – open until 11.00 pm.
• Good play facilities for children.
• Free chimineas and fire baskets with logs available to buy from the shop.
• Site atmosphere at night. Very convivial but not too noisy. Nice to walk around smelling the camp fires, listening to the gentle ‘buzz’ and the occasional quiet guitar playing.
• Free hot showers (see below).
• Good Chemical Disposal Point - no chance of it blocking up.
Cons:
• Steep slope on lower camping fields (without hook-ups). By no means all pitches are level and we heard several complaints about difficulty sleeping. Also problems levelling up the fridge – the front was a good 3” off the ground! We woke up feeling stiff every morning and were woken most nights by squawks from our younger daughter slipping down the slope and into the gap between the airbeds.
• Toilets and showers – generally kept clean but insufficient in number given the number of guests on site in the high season –even given the two extra wooden toilet huts in the tent fields. Queues for women’s showers often reached 6 to 8 in length and we felt the main block was starting to look a little tired. Piped radio was fine during the day but was still blaring out after midnight. Glad we weren’t near the toilet block.
• The number of guests staying meant refuse was starting to stack up near the toilet block, although staff worked very hard on this.
Other than this, the location of the site is wonderful. We have been visiting the Lizard for many years and Chy Carne is well placed to visit many of it’s attractions. Worth noting that the Kennack Sands Hotel (pub near the site) is now closed. Small Spar shop in Ruan Minor, grocer's in Lizard and Brenda’s shop in Coverack. Also Butcher's in St Keverne.
The Old Lifeboathouse restaurant in Coverack is well worth a visit. Not cheap but very good quality with fish sourced at Newlyn and locally caught crab and lobster. Virtually everything else homemade, even down to the cheese crackers and complimentary after-dinner chocolates.
As stated, we would go back to this site but would hope to see improvements to toilets and showers and would check about whether rallies were planned.
***** Response from Chy Carne holiday park*******
Thank you for leaving your review We would like to add that Chy Carne are committed to improving our site to our customers on a on going basis and though you can never really have enough showers at peak times, we are adding a further six showers, two toilets, and two further washing up sinks for 2011 as well as refurbishing our existing shower block. These will be situated towards our camping fields and we feel that this will go a long way to helping the situation, though please remember that it is only peak times that a problem may present itsself and this is often due to that we do not charge and visitors tend to take longer to shower when its free.
We do not close our shower block through the season and is regularly cleaned through out the day and night . At the end of the season we completely strip the walls and repaint them but for 2011 We are coating the showers cubicles with a plastic coating which will help us to keep the showers fresher
We do have many pitches that are level and some are on a gentle slope To most campers, camping on a gentle slope is a part of camping, but we do stress that if a level pitch is required then please book earlier to avoid disappointment
Unfortunately this year as seen beyond any expectation a high amount of household waste .We have dealt with the situation as quickly as we can possibly be expected for which you have made comment to that effect but recognize that more can be done. We are in talks with a new waste collector and hope that a agreement can be reached to provide a number of bins for recycling as well as for normal rubbish collection To ease the problem However the situation can be dealt with far better if some visitors didn`t just leave their rubbish where they camped and left it at the bin area so it can be removed for collection
We do host for a two week period a summer rally with entertainment for both adults and children with further on site activities which we do encourage all visitors to be a part of if they choose and all our customers are advised at the time of booking if there booking overlaps during this period. Though the site is busier at this time with more activity and there tends to be more noise, for the remainder of the time the site is quiet. Our rallies however are proving to be very popular but we do accept that its not for every one and we do advise our customers accordingly.
Overall we do encourage honest and truthful reviews to assist us with providing our customers with more of what makes them return and recommend us to others and thank you for your feed back and we hope to see you again following our improvements for which I know you will make a further review Best wishes Brian and Susan Saffill

Lovely site close to the Southernmost point in England (Lizard Point) with an excellent 'clean' family beach within 10 - 15 mins walk. Beach has parking, cafe and toilet facilities. Some lovely villages and places to visit close by such as the lighthouse at Lizard point and the pub in Lizard which does a wicked Chili Con Carne!
Helston is nearest town for food shopping and has a Tesco and Lidl. Within easy reach of Penzance and Falmouth which are both lovely places to visit.
Whilst there visited 'Flambards' and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the rides and exhibitions - well worth a visit.
Site itself is well laid out and pitches clearly marked. Toilet facilities are comfortable, warm and clean - piped radio too! Hot running water and free hot showers. There is also a shop on site for all the essentials including a brilliant 'Pizza' take out, games room and small food bar where you can get really good snacks or even a meal such as breakfast. Used this a couple of times for bacon and egg bap - really good and ample serving.
Site owners very friendly and accommodating. I would highly recommend this site to anyone, but particularly to families looking for a great place to stay with easy access to a beach and other options for days out within a reasonable distance. I am looking forward to visiting this site again next year!

Stayed at Chy Carne for a week July 2010. Great site with nicely stocked shop, and the staff were really pleasant and made our stay very enjoyable. Toilets and showers were cleaned often and the showers were nice and hot. There are also plans for a new shower block to accommodate this beautiful site. The pitches were really nice with beautiful views. Wow and nice little terraced areas with a gorgeous view to wake up to in the mornings. With really nice play areas for the children different from any other. And soccer and table tennis for the older children. Also a nice food shack at very reasonable prices, lovely beach in walking distance. Loved it will definitely go back.
