We spent 3 nights and days at the Rendlesham Forest site over the end of May /June half term and the weather was good to us. What a thoroughly enjoyable stay!

The field is large and although for the first two nights it was fairly well occupied, it was neither too noisy nor too crowded. Vehicles move around only one main track around the site and the kids were able to run pretty much as freely as they wanted all day, exploring the forest and the play areas.

The showers and toilets blocks are a little dated, but, very clean and well serviced – the bin was emptied and toilet rolls topped up as late as at half eight at night and they had not been overflowing or run out all day. Despite the volume of people on site, they were never too busy or dirty. Showers are 50p for a good 5 minutes of hot water, which is more than I really need if I’m not trying to shower kids too. The shop has some basics as well as ice creams and lots of useful information leaflets and a few toys etc.

About five minutes walk from the site entrance is a large forestry commission site which has several excellent climbing and play areas for children of all ages, it also has picnic areas, a car park and walks including the UFO trail, harking back to the incidents of 1980. There are miles of tracks on which you can walk or cycle to your heart’s content.

About six miles away there is Sutton Hoo, a National trust site which documents the findings of a selection of Anglo-Saxon barrows and their fascinating contents. A family ticket (up to 3 children) is £19 and it’s a good couple of hours of walk, play area and has an excellent visitor centre.

Nearby Woodbridge has some very good pubs and restaurants as well as a traditional town centre with a good few independent stores and if you want to explore only a little further then there are castles at Orford & Framlingham, shopping at Saxmundham and truly wonderful seaside towns at Aldeburgh & Southwold.

This is our second visit to this site (last visit Aug 2012). Shop well stocked for it's size. Could do with a few extra toilets and showers during our visit as the site was full but pleased to report that they has a fresh coat of paint and new shower curtains. Still basic but perfectly adequate. Children's play area has been replaced and fine for under 10s. Some swings would have been nice. The play facilities in the forest have been enhanced and are great. We love this site for access to the forest. There are some niggling (minor) complaints such as no radios but we had a great stay and will be returning. No where is perfect but in our opinion it is a great site for a family with three children wanting a relaxed break with friends.

We have been coming to Tangham every Whitsun week for about 5 years with friends and family and for several years prior to that on our own and whilst we love the site and the area, feel it could do with updating. Whilst we use our caravan facilities, the others in our group are all campers so need to use site showers and these definitely need updating. They seem not to have changed in all the years we have been coming; they need more of them (maybe a second block on the other side of the site), more space in each individual shower and just bigger toilet/washroom areas. I am also sure people would rather pay 50p more on the site fees than have to pay for showers.

The children's play area is a bit sad. Although new it is just a simple wooden frame and slide, they could have spent a bit more and got something really elaborate.

We also felt this year that the people were crammed in more than previously, they were 3-deep in the inner circle, limiting the play space in the middle.

However, negatives aside, the site is friendly, not too big and the setting in the middle of the forest is idyllic.

Not having endless extras to pay for is a bonus; the fee is the fee - no extra for the awning, electricity, pup tent etc.

The area is perfect - we saw herds of deer, the walking is endless and the children's facilities are wonderful - good play areas in the wood and mountain bike tracks. Surrounding areas worth a visit are Snape Maltings, Orford Ness, Southwold.

We would recommend it but it does definitely need a bit of attention.

We have just booked our annual May half term trip to this campsite as we (esp. The kids) love the forest location and it makes a perfect getaway for us in Colchester.

The children love building dens and my two have both learned to cycle here.

The shop, although small, is well stocked and very handy for the dis-organised camper!

We agree with other reviews on here that the shower block is dated (but very clean), however we have just been told that it's been refurbished so we are very excited to try them out!

We would strongly recommend this site and also to visit places like Aldeburgh, Southwold and Woodbridge while you are here.

We have stayed at Forest Camping several times over the last few years and really like the site with it being set in the forest and very quiet. We normally only stay for around 2 or 3 nights at a time. The campsite has a small shop selling essentials but that's about it. The campsite 'playground' is very basic, but fortunately just 100 yards from the campsite the Forestry Commission have built several playgrounds in the forest with wooden climbing frames and rope swings etc and these are all free. There is also a purpose built cycle course with steep slopes and a tunnel etc which is a lot of fun and this is just 500 yards from the campsite and again free to use. It's great being located in the forest but we were disappointed that one whole side of the campsite has recently had 100 yards (in depth) of trees cut down leaving it very open and exposed on that side. The campsite showers are still 50p a time, but are looking very dated now and could really do with improving. There are plenty of tracks to cycle on in the forest or walk the dog and that's what we like about the site. Local towns of Woodbridge and Aldeburgh are within a 30 minute drive of the site and are both worth a visit.

We visited this site for 1 night in May. It was in the half term (on a week day)and extremely busy. Although the site is actually very nice, situated in the forest and in a great area, it seemed overcrowded and the facilities were not sufficient, there being only one shower block (4 showers per sex) and two toilet blocks. Annoyingly, we were not told when we arrived that the showers cost £0.50 and were therefore not prepared in the morning. Even more annoyingly, the showers only run for 5 minutes and you have to get out of the shower cubicle and put more money in outside it if you want to shower for longer than 5 minutes.

Other than the facilities, there did not seem to be enough space to play and as such many children raced around the site on their bikes. I don't normally mind that, I also have a son who is partial to that, but it was just too busy. I would either visit at a quieter time or go elsewhere.

We stayed here for a weekend the site was very quite you need ramps. The wash block was clean and tidy. The showers cost 50p. The site is open so you may get tv with a dish we could not pick up any tv.

Did not see any wildlife on site. You have places like Sutton Hoo the snapes to visit. We would not stay again as we did not think that it was worth £19 a night we did not pay that as we were on rally. The site is easy to find.

This site has been one of my favourite places to stay for the past 5 or 6 years visiting 4 or 5 times a year.

Arrived on Friday evening we made it to our pitch which was in the middle area, which was a nice change from our normal outer pitch, shame about a very worn pitch with no grass, very dusty and hard to work out the pitch area, as the numbers are painted on bricks which have now worn off or the brick has disappeared under the ground.

Lucky we where in a camper as our friends found the awful condition of the ground a nightmare in a tent. a little ground maintenance would help and there's no excuse about no rain to give the grass a chance this year.

Saturday comes around after a great night previous under the stars and a few beers. Set up games for the kids go for a walk and return for more games where we where approached by a rude man on a bike demanding we turn off our radio. I know its not allowed on this site which is a bit strange but after the night before having to listen to other peoples radios and east enders on a neighbours tv, I thought the radio switched on wont hurt, it was set at a low volume which I walked around to other peoples camps near us to listen if it could be heard and it couldn't. even asked some people if they where ok with it and they said it couldn't be heard.

The showers where the same as every year old and under maintained, really needing pulling down and rebuilding as there arent enough for the size of the site and make sure your ok paying extra for a shower when you've already paid for your pitch.

Shop is ok but make sure you don't need much as the main shops are along way away.

The forest around the site is very nice great for bike rides and walks plenty to do for kids at the nearby playareas.

Saturday night was great but no music made it a bit strange although at least once again I could listen to other peoples tv s and radios which I thought after we had been spoken to he could have stuck to his guns and told others, but a few beers and a bbq made it a bit better.

Sunday woke up to another great weather day only to have to queue up for a shower as 8 showers for the whole site is not enough. once in I had to pay 50p which again wasn't long enough for a shower so it really costs 1 pound after you've got out and poured more money in.

When I phoned up I requested a quiet pitch away from play areas and the owner followed this to the letter, putting us in a much smaller field where pitches weren't named and very few people were using. Suited us fine!

The weather was pretty shocking and the ground soft but fine for pitching, the corner we chose was very sheltered. The main site looked full and we were glad not to be there as it seemed bigger than indicated on the website.

The toilet block was fine - the showers worked on 50p for 5 minutes (this tends to bother me a bit as I think hot water should be included in the price); this worked here as it made sure nobody stayed too long in the shower! Although the site was busy we didn't once queue for a shower and they were always hot and worked well.

Although the site is in the middle of a forest so quite secluded and out of the way, when we went for a walk to see what we could spot the forest itself had a fairly sterile feel and was clearly geared to timber production and leisure pursuits rather than serious wildlife.

The reason visiting the area was to visit Orford Ness - stunning and well worth a visit, appeals to nature lovers and history enthusiasts. We also went to Sutton Hoo which was great too, there seems to be no shortage of things to do in this area.

Although there was a 10pm curfew on the site we saw no enforcement of this and unfortunately were next to a group of dads and teenagers who had no consideration for anyone else - we had to request for a little bit of peace at about midnight both nights.

The owners could really do with having a wander round at 'curfew' time to gently remind people about noise levels, after all if you camp in the middle of nowhere in a forest surely you're after peace and quiet!

Would we go back? To the area - definitely. To the site - maybe. Perhaps it just didn't suit us but we've stayed at sites that have had a much more pleasant feel so whilst there was nothing 'wrong' it didn't seem to tick all of our boxes.

Have visited Tangham 3 times this year and must have sampled everything that the weather could throw at us. This didn't stop us or our boys (8 & 5) having the time of their lives.

Yes, the site is basic, but everything works, the Wardens are very helpful as is the old chap who appears to be on site all through the season.

With the forest surrounding the site it feels very secluded. There are local pubs a short drive away and many shops in nearby Woodbridge. Tesco will also deliver to the site.

We visited after weeks of heavy rain, but had no problems at all as the drainage on the site is superb.

Electric was ok and the water points and Elsan points were clean. The small shop opens daily and sells all sorts and a local chap drives round the site every day selling newspapers.

The toilet and shower blocks could do with updating but they work fine. The water in the showers were always hot. Don't forget your 50p's for the showers though.

The children have plenty to do with an adventure climbing frame and many places where they made dens. It is a very safe site for children to play and ride their bikes.

All in all a very good value for money site, and one which we are going back to in July.
